We have an amazing hop plant that keeps putting up new shoots. This is the second year it's been growing and it seems to like its home. We're only letting the first eight or so vines grow to maximize the flowering (they're already over 6 ft tall!) and keep trimming off the new ones. I've heard you can eat the shoots but I'm wondering what they're like and how to prepare them. Are they good for you?
Yes, we will be preparing fabulous homemade beer this fall. Hey, that's vegan, too, and organic to boot. And it'll go great with the food we'll make from our garden.

Re: Anyone eaten hop shoots?
Sun, May 15, 2005 - 3:05 PMThat's awesome. Some vegans may disagree with you on the yeast thang as far as beer goes, but beer is good. Ben Franklin once said that "beer is proof that god love us and wants us to be happy." I love that quote for some reason. Now if I could only stop this beer gut from developing further. -

Re: Anyone eaten hop shoots?
Sun, May 15, 2005 - 7:29 PMAh, yes, sorry about the yeast. I'm not actually vegan -- just vegetarian -- so I did not think of that. Hope I didn't offend anyone. I'll continue to hold out hope for hop shoots recipes... -

I'm confused. Why yeast? -

Re: Anyone eaten hop shoots?
Thu, May 19, 2005 - 8:21 PMbecause it's a live culture.. Not something I personally take seriously as a vegan, but there it is.. -

Re: Anyone eaten hop shoots?
Fri, May 20, 2005 - 10:42 AMThen what's the point of eating soy yogurt? Yeast doesn't have a brain. can't feel pain, etc. Plants are live, so if we shouldn't eat yeast, we shouldn't eat anything at all but topsoil. I can't blame you for not taking it seriously; neither do I. -

Several billion microorganisms (bacteria, fungi & yeast, nematodes, etc) per ounce of topsoil, sorry :P
(This yeast-free concept is new to me - all joking aside, I do respect people doing what they must to feel comfortable with their actions, I just don't really see the logic myself in this one...)
But of course this has nothing to do with the hop shoots of which I AM quite interested in (I had no idea you could eat'em!), so this is that last I'll say on the subject of yeasts :)

Re: Anyone eaten hop shoots?
Thu, May 19, 2005 - 8:41 PMDon't quote me on this, but hop shoots are apparantly a Belgian delicacy, like grainy asparaguses, more or less. From "The Bavarian Cookbook":
2lbs sprouts, boiled, and drained, marinated in a vinagrette for an hour or so.
And here are some pickled hop shoots: www.hopsdirect.com/detail.src
No personal experience here, but the Belgians have a clean record in my book. -

Re: Anyone eaten hop shoots?
Fri, May 20, 2005 - 10:12 AMThanks Rio! Of course, the shoots that were just coming up on the 15'th are already 18" long and probably too tough to eat. But maybe I'll try using the top bit and see how they taste!

Re: Anyone eaten hop shoots?
Mon, May 23, 2005 - 10:57 AMSo sad... We had a few hot days and the leaves opened up on all the shoots. I tried them and they have the potential to be nice (if a bit prickly) but they were irremediably tough. I think I have to pick them early, before they leaf out.
Next spring......
