So, I found this page www.theppk.com/recipes/vegansushi.shtml to make vegan sushi. Sushi was really the main thing keeping me from being Vegan. I love sushi with a passion so glad to have found this.

What I am looking for is interesting ingrediants to put in the sushi that go well together. Would like to do a dinner party with this for friends to celebrate going Vegan and come out to those that may not know yet :) (a dessert roll suggestion would be awesome too!)

Thanks for any suggestions!

I prolly should have looked on the vegan cooking tribe. Saw a post in another non-sushi post that had these suggestions to start out:

    carrots
    cucumbers
    baked winter squashes and pumpkin
    baked tofu
    mushrooms (cooked and/or raw)
    spinach (raw or cooked/steamed)
    green onions
    asparagus
    sweet potato

Thanks for all the ideas, those are awesome!

I am not limited as much as I thought, this is gonna rock!

I was thinking Mango, cucumber, and kiwi rolls for dessert with some sweetened rice rolled, maybe throw some vegan cream cheese in there too.

Don't forget to finish the sweet roll by dredging in shredded coconut - yum!

                  *drooling*

Hmm, may have to do some "test runs" to make sure they meet my hi yumminess standards of me and my friends. Don't want to disappoint now do I?

When you say "sushi," you're talking MAKI (rolls), right? Not NIGIRI?

Yeah, I second the macadamia nuts idea. I sometimes like to crush mac nuts really well (a few whacks BEFORE they reach powder form) and toss them in the rice and do a rice-side-out roll. Inside is avocado, sautéed garlic (with salt n' pepa), sprouts, cucumber, and veggie cream cheese. Yummy with different textures. Or mix it up by switching seaweed with the soy paper.

For another roll idea, I also like to just put various tempura-ed vegetables like pumpkin, squash, potatoes, carrots, mushrooms, onions, etc. -- not all together of course. Although I certainly can't stop you from trying. And if you're not dieting and have a fryer on hand, you can tempura the entire roll!! YUM! I would not recommend to tempura the roll if you already have tempura items inside the roll. Sometimes too much of a good thing isn't so great. Just be creative and put your favorite things together that can be fried, roll it around in batter, and fry the sucker. Just be sure to stick with oils that can stand the heat like canola or vegetable.

For dessert, try using lavender or rose-flavored rice if you can find them. And use soy paper for dessert. You can even get more artsy and paint the paper with vegetarian food coloring. You're feeding the eyes too, remember.

I also recommend that if you're doing this for a whole crowd of people, you let them do it themselves. Just put the varied ingredients out in bowls/plates. That way they can decide for themselves what they want to put in their rolls and you have one less thing to do.

yeah maki, not nigiri...although I bet you could do a good faux eel nigiri with eggplant hmmm.

Some incredible ideas, thanks for the hosting tips Chickadee I will do that, less work for me and more fun for them. I am all about interactive environments too!

Tempura the entire roll sounds incredible, yum yum.

I am really drooling now lol, thanks for all the creative ideas!

Jeffz, you are quite welcome! I recall doing a sushi party where my guests hand-rolled their own rolls. Because some of them had never done it before, some rolls turned out pretty crappy. --There is a certain technique to creating maki-- But they were still delicious none-the-less and everyone had fun.

By the way, since you are doing sushi, you'll probably be thinking of dipping sauces. Of course you probably already have soy sauce on your shopping list. Buyer beware:

Chinese company makes soy sauce from human hair
A resourceful Chinese company got in trouble for brewing soy sauce out of human hair.
China Central Television (CCTV), the state television station, first raised public worries over the quality of domestic soy sauce by uncovering a substandard workshop in central China's Hubei Province, where piles of waste human hair were found. The hairs were treated in special containers to distill amino acid, the most common substance contained in soybean sauce.
Human hair is rich in protein content, just like soybean, wheat and bran, the conventional and legally accepted raw ingredients for the production of soy sauce.
        www.boingboing.net/2004/05/...make.html

But that's just one food company. I doubt if other major soy sauce companies practice this, um, "resourceful" technique. As far as I know, most (Japanese) soy sauce is vegan-friendly made with just soy beans, grains, water, and sometimes salt and alcohol. I HAVE FOUND that a lot of imported products will have fish or meat products in it, even though it does not specifically say that on the ingredients list. You know, the US gov't requires that all imported foods list the ingredients and nutritional values and fat contents, just like we are used to seeing on the backs of any packaged domestic foods. Sometimes though, either the translator is being lazy or something gets overlooked, and they neglect to translate that there is some animal (bi)product in the foods. You just have to be careful and maybe ask one of the friendly employees of your favorite specialty/imported foods store to help you with the language(s).

Shoot. I had this one great spicy mayo sauce at a local Japanese restaurant in downtown LA. I don't have a recipe for it, but I'm sure it can be recreated with vegan ingredients. If someone has a spicy vegan mayo sauce recipe, I'd be very thankful!

        PS. DON'T FORGET THE WASABI!!

it's ALL about the tempura! Tempura sweet potato is my favorite roll, and the entire roll deep-friend is so good!

I also like making maki that are chopped walnuts held together with plum paste, a little bitter, and a little sweet!

    A couple more ideas:

grill some shiitake mushrooms with a little soy sauce and minced ginger sprinkled on top, place on top of individual suchi rice mounds and sprinkle some toasted sesame seeds - yum yum....

Another thing that my favorite local sushi restaurant serves: light miso and julienned cucumbers together, very good combination, just use the miso as a 'dip' or spread

Also, do not forget cold cubed tofu sprinkled wiht grated ginger and minced scallions....wiht a little soy sauce. This last one only works if the tofu is very very fresh....ok that was 3 items...

here is a tempeh avocado brown rice roll came up with

slice tempeh very thin. Fry over medium heat till brown, turn over and fry till brown. Mix 1/4 cup dashi, 1 tablespoon tamari, 1 tablespoon mirin, 1 tablespoon sake and pour over the tempeh. It will absorb and evaporate quickly.
use the tempeh with avocado slices along with brown rice (with vinegar and mirin added to the rice!!) and roll it up.

      I eat sushi atleast a few times a week and I also love to make it at home. I do all the basics listed here (cukes, carrots, burdock, daikon, mushroom, etc) as well as always trying some new ones. some of my favs;

1 . asparagus rolled with a spicy nayonnaise (just mix siriracha (rooster sauce) with nayonnaise)

      2. Freeze tofu, defrost, squeeze out water, cut in small thin cubes, drop for a few secs in hot oil remove, towel off grease, roll in honey and sesame seeds - add to a maki roll

      3. Horenso maki - spinach with sesame seeds

      4. veggie tempura rolls

      5. very sweet organic red bell peppers & macademia nuts & nayonnaise

      6. mango, avocado & macademia nuts

At my fav sushi place i love their artichoke (non oil kind) & sprout roll

You can also add a variety of things to rolls for flavor - siriracha & nayonnaise, wasabi, plain nayonnaise, ume plum paste

you should also make inari - you can buy the pockets and just add the sweet/vinegar sushi rice. just make sure the pockets do not contain msg.
