Lard, butter, ketchup, mayonnaise, sugar, sweet tea, bacon, eggs, grits, ham, fried chicken and fish, collards....
These are foods from my childhood where I grew up in the South. As a child I loved them. Loved them all. My diet has changed considerably over the years but there's still a lot of tastes and smells I still miss. Having said that I no longer associate southern food - GOOD southern food - as something that's all that compatable with being vegetarian. Perhaps the onus is on me for not really trying all that hard to re-incorporate some of those tastes and smells. But.... behold! Praise be! Yee-ha and HELL Yeah!!!!!!!!!
I am in heaven... I just picked up Bryant Terry's latest book:
Vegan Soul Kitchen: Fresh, Healthy, and Creative African-American Cuisine
and it is FINE!
Actually though I started this thread not so much to plug this great cookbook but to ask if there are those out there that have any recipes that you consider almost or even exclusively 'Southern' that you might like to share here.
C'mon now. You know you want to.

Re: Vegetarian Soul Food
Tue, November 10, 2009 - 9:16 PMaw wow did you live in a bayou too!? like Tia Dalma :D
well i don't know any off the top of my head but my mother LOVES Cajun food (a throwback to some Barbadian heritage maybe) etc and there's a few books lying around here so i'll have a look and contribute later on..
but i just wanted to mention that it is the understanding of this amazing energy worker i've come across that foods associated with your childhood are very good for you (within reason i suppose?) as they encourage an emotional connection and some kind of security ~ that something familiar oughta be in each meal. and on that note it was also understood that you should never eat food made by someone/someplace you don't trust..
