From Oct. 15 to 21, CHLY hosted its annual fall
on-air membership drive and featured shows with
many special guests discussing the value of independent
media. Raymond Geisler hosts Unbought &
Unbossed: Canadian Political News & Views, Canada’s
only 9/11 truth radio show.

During Geisler’s show this year, guests from six
different Canadian communities representing the
9/11 truth movement came together to show their
support for independent media. Guests included
Drew Nofl e from Vancouver, Mitch Lazaroff from
Edmonton, and Brad Brehm from the Kootenays, all
representing their local 9/11 Truth Society; as well
as Wayne Prante from Canada’s newest 9/11 truth
group in the Fraser Valley/Greater Vancouver area;
and Jessie Schroeder from Parksville, who hosted a
9/11 memoriam in Parksville.

The lively discussion focused on bringing 9/11
truth issues to the greater public and ways to work
within the established media without appearing as
cartoon versions of hooligans. Geisler says that his
guests “have frustration with the corporate or the
mainstream media today and their omissions and
distortions of the events of 9/11. Therefore, they
know the importance of independent media.”

Geisler’s show was well-received, as evidenced
by the many pledges he received from listeners all
over the Island, and as far east as Chilliwack. He
says the program “showed the unity of Canadians
from various regions in their quest for a more democratic
and responsible Canadian government.” Geisler
re-enforced his message that “independent media,
such as CHLY, is playing a vital role in bringing
[…] relevant issues to Canadian citizens.”

Soon, Geisler plans to host a 9/11 “teach-in”,
which is a lecture accompanied by a PowerPoint
presentation showing photographic evidence. Everyone
who comes will receive a free DVD documentary
as well as an outline of the presentation.

WE MUST STOP THE POLICE STATE Though many different frauds are addressed in Zeitgeist, at the present time the most important issue is exposing 9/11 and thus exposing government sponsored Terrorism. On Aug. 4th 2007, the Senate passed the Bush backed 'spy bill' http://www.alternet.org/rights/58806/, which preserves & expands the illegal domestic spying program. I hope people are educated enough by this time to know that such legislations have nothing to do with Terrorism, and everything to do with monitoring and controlling American dissent.
Furthermore, on May 9 2007, Bush signed the National Security and Homeland Security Presidential Directive http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=viewArticle&code=ROG20070521&articleId=5721>, which gives Bush near full dictatorial powers in the event of a "National Emergency". Bush, and the people he works for, will be able to do ANYTHING they want if a "National Emergency" is deemed. All they need is a "New 9/11". The US Constitution will no longer be applicable.
In regards to this Directive, Paul Craig Roberts, a former Assistant Secretary of the Treasury during the Reagan administration, has come out and said he feels the White House is preparing to STAGE A NEW 9/11 <http://en.rian.ru/world/20070720/69340886.html>and the executive order is designed to capitalize on such an attack, specifically to impose Martial Law and Invade Iran. The Federal Reserve injected $38billion into the banking system in three operations Friday, attempting to avert a credit crunch that could threaten the economy.

The central bank pledged to provide cash as needed "to facilitate the orderly functioning of financial markets."

It was the Fed's biggest one-day injection since it added $81.25 billion shortly after 9-11. The Fed added $24 billion on Thursday.

Comment: What does this say about the current financial situation when you have the Fed injecting this much money just to keep the markets from crashing. These little bandaids will only work for so long and the Central Bankers know it. They create money out of nothing so they can keep printing more money and keep buying up the Dow Jones index stocks (through the plunge protection team) to keep the illusion of prosperity going. This over printing of US dollars will send the greenback to zero at some point and worthless paper and then introduce the North American currency "The AMERO".

More than half of Americans say US news organizations are politically biased, inaccurate, and don't care about the people they report on, a poll published Thursday showed.

And poll respondents who use the Internet as their main source of news -- roughly one quarter of all Americans -- were even harsher with their criticism, the poll conducted by the Pew Research Center said.

More than two-thirds of the Internet users said they felt that news organizations don't care about the people they report on; 59 percent said their reporting was inaccurate; and 64 percent they were politically biased.

More than half -- 53 percent -- of Internet users also faulted the news organizations for "failing to stand up for America".

Washington Post admits that Cheney is a Criminal Dictator

Now that mainstream media bias is an established fact and recognized as
such by the mainstream reading and viewing public, the revelation of
Vice President Dick Cheney's total unilateral control over all levels
and branches of American government has not only raised eyebrows and
concerns of dictatorship, but for those politically astute, begs the
question as to why theWashington Post would be the journalistic vehicle
to publish the four-part June 24 through June 27 series exposing this
reality.

The Post's publisher, Donald E. Graham, has once again participated in
the annual secret Bilderberg conclave, the latter the principal
organizational player whose membership is made up of extremely
high-level international bankers, mass media publishers, corporatists in
both the oil industry and the military-industrial complex, and other
principal international political movers and shakers. Bilderberg's
primary objective is a one world global government, the New World Order.
And the NWO will be phased in via the European and then the North
American Union.

Is it safe to say that the most recent Bilderberg
<http://www.bilderberg.org/2007.htm>meeting, held in Istanbul May 31 to
June 3rd, considered the most vital issues confronting future global
government? And of course, those issues would have been 1) Iraq, and 2)
Iran. It is clear that American, British and Israeli control over Mid
East oil is definitely on the agenda in their lockstep, jackboot march
to deliver US all to the New World Order. This triumvirate is the
world's "real axis of evil."

Mountain ranges of corporate money have been provided to Congress by
lobbyists and corporatists representing the oil industry, military
weapons contractors, AIPAC, banking and media interests, to not only buy
into American government, but to where their "investments" have now
facilitated total control of America. They have replaced what was once
reserved as the exclusive representative domain of the people of the
United States, which allowed the latter their collective voice in
government.

And the people's representatives, after abandoning America's interests,
have turned over congressional war-making powers to Bush, who has in
turn delegated virtually all of his presidential duties to Vice
President Richard B. Cheney. And Cheney-Bush are profiting personally
via heavy investment interests in oil and an oil support industry giant
[Halliburton].
Constitutionally speaking, the Office of Vice President of the United
States of America has no duties. This inefficate position in the
executive branch serves only as President of the Senate, and then
functions legislatively only in an extremely narrow capacity to break a
deadlocked vote. Complaints about the "do-nothing" status of the vice
president's role and function date back toAmerica's first Vice
President, John Adams.

Considering the absence of constitutionally mandated responsibilities,
it should be clear that at least from a regulatory and legal standpoint,
there's little to nothing a vice president can do wrong; he has,
basically, no executive branch functions. And it is for this reason that
Congressman Dennis Kucinich's House Resolution 333, seemed at first, to
be a wrong-headed exercise in partisan politics hand wringing.

But that was before the Washington Post launched its four-part series.
The Post is a nationally recognized bastion of the American mass media.
It is the paper of
<http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/special/watergate/index.html>Watergate
fame, the paper of Bradlee, Bernstein and Woodward. And considering all
that the Cheney-Bush regime has done to launch NWO, the attempted
legalization of Mexican illegals, the private "negotiations" between
Bush and the heads of Canada and Mexico to dissolve totally our borders
to create a North American Union, the United States' unilateral
abolition of the Geneva Conventions and other international treaties
ensuring and protecting the sovereignty of independent nations, why
would Graham's Washington Post now attack Bilderberg's "dream team?"

Obviously, something is up with the planners and conspirators
maneuvering the human race into a one world global government. The Post
series, written by staff writers Barton Gellman and Jo Becker, would
never have been allowed off the ground and would have never been
accorded so much focus unless it was sanctioned and possibly even urged
by the Bilderbergs. And consider the appearance of the series so shortly
after the latter's annual secret meeting. So what's up?
It can only be speculated since the movement for global government is so
secret. That is why everything the Cheney-Bush crime machine does is a
matter of "national security." 9/11 was indeed an inside job perpetrated
by Cheney-Bush; it is the source of their unlimited dictatorial power.
But if they arranged 9/11, why the suspension of our Bill of Rights and
why the intense spying on Americans? The answer is obvious: they fear
Americans will find out, organize, and plan an armed rebellion.

They do not fear al Qaeda, because al Qaeda doesn't exist, or at least
it didn't exist in terms of planning and executing 9/11. No, Cheney-Bush
intend to enslave America, strip it of its national identity, and serve
US all up to the New World Order. Multizillionaire international banker
David Rockefeller has already admitted to the latter effort.

Apparently, something has happened to interfere with the bankers' plans
and schedule. Perhaps Cheney-Bush have provided too much evidence of
their criminal and treasonist intentions, and the threat of an armed
rebellion is now looming larger than ever. Perhaps a military coup is in
the wind. Or perhaps, the unpopularity of the Cheney-Bush dictatorship
is causing even the world conspirators to fractionalize. Whatever it is,
something must be up to have triggered the Gellman-Becker series.

The exposé has now provided solid evidence that Cheney is running the
show and is therefore definitely impeachable. As Bruce Fein, a
constitutional lawyer and a former associate deputy attorney general
under Ronald Reagan wrote in his June 27th article, "Impeach Cheney" and

Dick Cheney, the office of the vice president has been transformed from
a tiny acorn into an unprecedented giant oak. In grasping and exercising
presidential powers, Cheney has dulled political accountability and
concocted theories for evading the law and the Constitution that would
have embarrassed King George III."

Fein continues: "The most recent invention we know of is the vice
president's insistence that an executive order governing the handling of
classified information in the executive branch does not reach his office
because he also serves as president of the Senate. In other words, the
vice president is a unique legislative-executive creature standing above
and beyond the Constitution. The House judiciary committee should
commence an impeachment inquiry. As Alexander Hamilton advised in the
Federalist Papers, an impeachable offense is a political crime against
the nation. Cheney's multiple crimes against the Constitution clearly
qualify."

During the Clinton administration, Bill Clinton "wrote legislation" via
executive orders. The opposition's beef at the time was that such
presidential fiat executive orders were not national law, but were
instead confined to operational directives within the executive branch
alone. Now Cheney explains his vision that executive orders do not apply
to the executive branch of government, and if they do, they don't apply
to him because he has decided he isn't in the executive branch of
government. That's not what is written in the Constitution. His arrogant
defiance of the United States Constitution and an executive order that
applies directly to him constitute the very political crimes attorney
Bruce Fein pointed out were in violation of the rule of law of this
nation.

And although the Gellman-Becker Post series started out promisingly
enough, and in spite of the fact that it still evidences a refreshing
air of professional journalism, Part I of the series defining Cheney's
criminal dictatorial control gives way later in the series to a
condoning tone and a dimension of approval articulating Cheney's
exceptional talent in cutting through the mire of government bureaucracy
red tape to arrive expeditiously at common sense solutions. The plight
of the Klamath basin farmers in opposing the federal Environmental
Protection Agency, a cause resoundingly favored by "conservatives" who
hate the bureaucratic stupidity of big government, was presented by the
"liberal" Washington Post as a case in point as to Cheney's astonishing
and beneficent vision. Huh?! Championing the rights of individuals
trying to earn profits over caring, compassionate, Big Brother
government is now a cause for the Washington Post?

As stated, the series does indeed expose Cheney's dictatorial control,
but before the series is over, this dictatorial control is offered up as
"good" dictatorship. Perhaps this is the real purpose of the series, to
admit to Cheney's total control of America, but to blunt its horror and
danger by pointing out evidence of beneficence. And considering that no
more mention of this horrible anomaly in American government can be
found anywhere in the mass media, it would seem that its timing and
shock effect would wear off quickly given the newspaper mentality and
short collective memory of the American public. Again, it is most
difficult to surmise the real intent of the series.

Part I is the most shocking in terms of describing how one individual
controls ALL in American government. Here's an example from the opening
paragraph: "Just past the Oval Office, in the private dining room
overlooking the South Lawn, Vice President Cheney joined President Bush
at a round parquet table they shared once a week. Cheney brought a
four-page text, written in strict secrecy by his lawyer. He carried it
back out with him after lunch.

In less than an hour, the document traversed a West Wing circuit that
gave its words the power of command. It changed hands four times,
according to witnesses, with emphatic instructions to bypass staff
review. When it returned to the Oval Office, in a blue portfolio
embossed with the presidential seal, Bush pulled a felt-tip pen from his
pocket and signed without sitting down. Almost no one else had seen the
text."
The article continues: "Cheney's proposal had become a military order
from the commander in chief. Foreign terrorism suspects held by the
United States were stripped of access to any court -- civilian or
military, domestic or foreign. They could be confined indefinitely
without charges and would be tried, if at all, in closed 'military
commissions.'"

Is this the way American laws should be written? Does this align with
Constitutional constraints that provide for a separation of powers and
checks and balances to ensure individual freedoms? "Suspects" are now
designated as such by the government's executive branch, and proof in a
court of law is now no longer required. And what is to differentiate
between a terror suspect and any other kind of suspect? And how about
members of a political opposition are they also "terrorists" because
they disagree with this criminal administration? Only Cheney and Bush
now have this power, which they gave to themselves!

Even members of Bush's own administration were outraged by this
dictatorial fiat. Gellman and Becker elaborate after members of the Bush
regime found out about the fiat while still in the dark as to its
origin: "'What the hell just happened?' Secretary of State Colin L.
Powell demanded, a witness said, when CNN announced the order that
evening, Nov. 13, 2001. National security adviser Condoleezza Rice,
incensed, sent an aide to find out. Even witnesses to the Oval Office
signing said they did not know the vice president had played any part."

As much as Cheney covets total control protected by total secrecy,
Gellman and Becker note that, "Cheney expresses indifference, in public
and private, to any verdict but history's, and those close to him say he
means it." But isn't this the same outlook that can be attributed to
Hitler and Stalin? Isn't it the same indifference and arrogance that
justifies "breaking some eggs to make an omelet?"
In the opinion of this writer, there is more behind Cheney's quest for
unlimited power, shrouded in absolute secrecy, and all-encompassing in
every matter of federal government control. And the article makes it
clear, that anyone who crosses Cheney gets wasted. Gellman and Becker
point out to the sharp differences of opinion and the conflicts that
former EPA Administrator Christie Todd Whitman had with Cheney,
differences that led her to eventually resign from the agency. They
mention former Attorney General John Ashcroft's differences with Cheney,
also leading to his resignation. The article documents Cheney's meddling
with both the EPA and the Department of Justice. And his pressuring the
CIA for fraudulent intelligence to justify the invasion of Iraqis now
well known.

The Washington Post's Gellman-Becker series is, whatever the reason for
its airing, an absolute masterpiece of journalism, but not for reasons
that are immediately obvious. It's not the writing style, nor is it even
the revelations resultant from intense investigative reporting. Perhaps
the real benefits of the article have been totally missed by Graham and
the Post's executive staff. The expose answers two not so obvious
questions: first, why do we have such an incompetent fool as president,
and second, why does such an incompetent fool wield so much power and is
so assertive regarding "his" decisions? The series provides the answer:
Dick Cheney.

For early on in the quest to rid America of a very popular yet very
destructive president, Cheney's name came up as a dedicated American to
replace a dedicated internationalist. And this may be the real reason
for the subdued attack/exposure on Cheney. It may not be his fascism
that offends, but his nationalism. Perhaps it's Cheney's vision for a
New World Order controlled byWashington that bothers the Bilderberg
internationalists. And it is this same nationalism which turned off the
bankers to both Hitler and Stalin. But there is no need to speculate the
connection between Cheney and Bush.

Undoubtedly, Cheney was the GOP's pick to replace Clinton. But because
of his heart problems, Cheney would never win a presidential election.
Enter stage right, G. Bush, a simpleton, and an obedient and virtually
clueless stooge. Bush serves not only as the buffoon heat sink for the
GOP dictatorship, but is also its "decider" as related in the Post's
series when describing how Cheney writes law and Bush decides to sign
without either reading or understanding what it is that he is signing.
The series explores how Cheney decides on everything that is within the
federal government's purview.

The series explains Cheney's involvement and direct supervision and
control over the Department of Justice, his intimidation of the EPA, his
power over the CIA, his total control of foreign policy, and his total
control over the White House staff and Bush. Gellman and Becker try to
paint the picture that Bush retains some identity distinct from Cheney's
oversight, but at least for this observer, it simply doesn't work. I'm
convinced that Cheney is behind EVERYTHING this dangerous, corrupt and
criminal regime has perpetrated. And that would include 9/11!

As Dr. David Ray Griffin has pointed out in his latest book, both the
9/11 Commission report and the government-sanctioned released tapes
falsify the timeframe wherein Cheney was in the bunker on 9/11. After
reading the Post series, can there be any doubt as to who was in charge
on that awful day? Can there be any doubt as to who really ordered those
WTC buildings to be "pulled?" Can there be any doubt as to who decided
that certain attorneys in the Justice Department were to be let go? And
for Hillary and Congressman Nadler, can there be any doubt as to who
made the phone call to EPA Administrator Christie Todd Whitman directing
her to lie about the condition of the pulverized glass, concrete and
steel in the dust and smoke of the disintegrated WTC buildings? Hillary
demanded to know who gave the order to Whitman; now we know!

The benefit of this journalistic effort has little to do with
presentation; it has everything to do with timeliness and the solving of
the types of mysteries such as Hillary and Congressman Nadler were
looking into. Can one imagine the anger in Whitman for having to take
the fall for the very guy that forced her to resign? Here are Gellman
and Becker again: "Stealth is among Cheney's most effective tools.
Man-size Mosler safes, used elsewhere in government for classified
secrets, store the workaday business of the office of the vice
president. Even talking points for reporters are sometimes stamped
'Treated As: Top Secret/SCI.' Experts in and out of government said
Cheney's office appears to have invented that designation, which alludes
to 'sensitive compartmented information,' the most closely guarded
category of government secrets. By adding the words 'treated as,' they
said, Cheney seeks to protect unclassified work as though its disclosure
would cause 'exceptionally grave damage to national security.'"

And, "Across the board, the vice president's office goes to unusual
lengths to avoid transparency. Cheney declines to disclose the names or
even the size of his staff, generally releases no public calendar and
ordered the Secret Service to destroy his visitor logs. His general
counsel has asserted that 'the vice presidency is a unique office that
is neither a part of the executive branch nor a part of the legislative
branch,' and is therefore exempt from rules governing either. Cheney is
refusing to observe an executive order on the handling of national
security secrets, and he proposed to abolish a federal office that
insisted on auditing his compliance." Have you ever seen a better
description of a total dictatorship?

If the evidence wasn't there before, it sure as hell is now! Cheney is
absolutely guilty as charged, and Congress now has the evidence.
Congressman Kucinich hit the nail perfectly on the head, and the time
for Congress to nail the Cheney-Bush regime is long overdue. Nothing
more needs to be written or said about the Cheney-Bush regime; it's now
all been said. And in conjunction with the continuously mounting
scientific evidence proving the 9/11 terrorist acts as being inside
jobs, we also know of Cheney's modus operandi and his commitment to
history instead of his required dedication to America and its people.
Has there ever been a more immoral character than Cheney capable of the
expression "the public be damned?"

As Bruce Fein wrote after reading the Post series, "Cheney must be
impeached!" Fein documents the long list of criminal activities the Bush
administration, now proven to be under the total control of Cheney, has
perpetrated against the American people and the entire human race for
which the administration, the Congress, AND the American people must now
all be held accountable for in the eyes of our Creator. How many letters
have you sent to your congressional representatives and senators? How
many discussion groups or activist groups have you joined or
participated in?

Should you come up with a negative response, then YOU are guilty as
well! Anyone who remains silent witnessing these egregious crimes and
the evil of merely one "human" being should consider themselves an
accessory, before, during and after the fact. It is time to impeach,
sentence and punish these most dangerous and evil criminals!

"This is how we will create a North American consciousness and a true North American Community. It will be forged in the heat of conflict, not through a rational discussion, as painful as that may be. It really cannot happen any other way." - Bruce Stokes, CFR Senior Fellow, speaking at the "Toward a North American Community?" conference, June 11, 2002

In reading a little noticed June 11, 2002 document (link) detailing a conference held by the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, shocking revelations are made regarding the elite's plans to create a North American Union between Canada, Mexico, and the United States of America.

The "Toward a North American Community?" conference focused on the social and ideological aspects of the creation of a "North American Community", and prescribes ways to deal with nationalism and a belief in the sovereignty of ones own country; both obstacles to their plans. A "North American Consciousness" - an outlook absent of traditional beliefs in sovereignty, replaced by an international view favorable to globalism - is needed, the panelists conclude, that would support the "... economic, political, and social integration..." of Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

The title "Toward a North American Community" may sound familiar to some. This was the title that Robert Pastor, one of the main proponents of a North American Community, gave to his book that was published just a year before the Woodrow Wilson conference.

The "Toward a North American Community?" conference is described in the document,

"This conference was a departure from many recent events on North America. Instead of looking exclusively at trade and investment, the panelists were asked to focus on relationships in North America and to examine identity, sovereignty, and political practices in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Further economic, political, and social integration will depend on how citizens of the three countries define their national identities and the degree to which they are willing to cede some of their countries’ sovereignty to a larger entity."

The document continues, reiterating the same theme from above,

"The first panel of the conference brought together scholars from the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Panelists looked at American, Mexican, and Canadian attitudes on identity and sovereignty in the context of North America. Trade, political integration, and the nature of agreements among the three countries will depend largely on the way people in these countries define their interests, and the extent to which they feel there is something to be gained from a North American Community."

Presentations were given by representatives from Mexico, Canada, and the United States respectively. The task of each was to present the political and social atmosphere of each country with respect to "North American integration." Stephanie R. Golob of Baruch College and member of the Council on Foreign Relations represented the United States. Alejandro Moreno, director of research for Reforma, and professor at Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México represented Mexico. Laura Macdonald of Carleton University represented Canada.

Stephanie Golob expressed concerns that negative American reactions to NAFTA remain a major obstacle to North American integration.

"...Golob indicated that despite this perception that the United States is driving integration, related concerns in the United States about popular sovereignty and national integrity drove the highly emotional NAFTA debate back in 1993, and continue to form a key obstacle to North American Community."

Because of this, Golob states that North American integration will have to come "...from the top down." Golob's analysis concluded that, "Many bottom-up linkages such as migration and the spread of the Spanish language demonstrate community among the three countries."

Another recommendation given by Golob is that,

"...the President and his inner circle could fuel its development from the top down by demonstrating to Congress and the media that the expansion of North American integration is in the national interest."

It appears that the President has not followed this strategy just yet, as secrecy still surrounds NAU plans. Outright denial of plans for a North American Union have come from the White House press secretary, Tony Snow. He was asked by World Net Daily about the Security and Prosperity Partnership and the progress towards a North American Union. Snow flatly denied any involvement.

As World Net Daily reports,

"WND asked Snow about the criticism, stating, 'As WorldNetDaily's lead story pointed out yesterday, critics are expressing concerns about the president's cooperative efforts with Mexico and Canada regarding the Security and Prosperity Partnership. And my question: Will the president categorically deny any interest in building a European Union-style superstate in North America?'"

Responded Snow: "Of course, no. We're not interested. There is not going to be an EU in the U.S."

The document elaborates on Golob's proposal stating that her research showed that forming a "North American identity" from a "foreign policy perspective" may aid in the shaping of public opinion. According to Golob, redefining the word "we" would also help in the formation of a North American identity.

"Foreign policy, she asserted, provides three things for a nation’s citizens: sovereignty, security, and identity.
Sovereignty dictates that the state’s citizens and government (“we”) decide policy, identity defines “who we are” as a nation, and security protects a nation’s sovereignty and identity. Governments must convince citizens that the regional project is consistent with these three values by expanding the definition of the “we.”'

The document continues, describing Golob's findings on America's stance with regards to a North American Community.

"Golob suggested that the United States, ironically, may prove the greatest obstacle to this process."

Golob is correct in viewing America as an obstacle to a North American Union. While there remains a large section of the population that is oblivious of its existence, there is an aware and motivated group of Americans that is. Lou Dobbs, who has been the only prominent mainstream media figure to raise awareness of the North American Union, conducted a poll in early 2007 asking viewers if they would support legislation to prohibit the creation of a North American Union. 82% of respondents stated that "Yes" they would support efforts to stop the NAU.

Golob's proposal goes further, suggesting that North American integration should be framed in a "non-threatening" manner by binding in the public's mind the protection of U.S. industries and North American integration. Also discussed is the possibility of creating the false perception that the people are demanding integration.

"She suggested, however, that future decisions on greater integration would most likely come about via “integration through protectionism,” where agreements to integrate the three countries further are coupled with measures that protect specific U.S. industries. This would be an incremental approach to integration in which North American identity is deepened in sectors already integrating and is framed as non-threatening to those sectors which see themselves outside of regional flows. This approach would be driven by Congress and require the building of constituencies so that the issue could be framed as a “winner at the polls.”"

The document also contains a transcript of a speech that Bruce Stokes gave at the conference. Stokes is a Council on Foreign Relations Senior Fellow, commentator for National Public Radio, and writer for the National Journal.

Stokes states that,

"...we can agree that people are not at the point of believing in a North American Community yet. They still think and act as three separate entities. But they engage in their daily lives in new and different ways in issues that are really North American issues. Our challenge, as people that view the North American Community, is that we need to find issues that people are engaged in—whether they are trivial or dangerously provocative— and use them to move toward a broader North American consciousness."

The president of the Council on Foreign Relations, Richard Haass, focused on one such provocative issue in his article "State sovereignty must be altered in globalized era." Among other issues, Haass states that climate change, or global warming, should give an incentive to cede sovereignty "...to world bodies..." He states that, "Globalization thus implies that sovereignty is not only becoming weaker in reality, but that it needs to become weaker. States would be wise to weaken sovereignty in order to protect themselves..."

Stokes concludes his speech by saying that,

"This is how we will create a North American consciousness and a true North American Community. It will be forged in the heat of conflict, not through a rational discussion, as painful as that may be. It really cannot happen any other way."

The American people, as well as our neighbors to the north and south, have been totally alienated as the North American Union marches forward. The "Toward a North American Community?" conference panelists do want to include you in the integration process - but apparently only to manipulate you. A casual observation of the actions of the individuals and organizations involved in the creation of the North American Union seems to show that the predominant strategy in recent years has been to shun the public. This chosen path of secrecy may be in response to the findings of the Woodrow Wilson conference that "...people are not at the point of believing in a North American Community yet." In the event the NAU becomes much more open to the public - perhaps due to the exposure of the plans thanks to individuals like Jerome R. Corsi, Dr. Daneen G. Peterson and others - we may in fact see the strategies outlined during this 2002 conference put to use.

The top ten advances towards tyranny in the United States during the tenure of the Bush administration, from the Patriot Act to the latest expansion of the illegal eavesdropping surveillance program.

1) The USA Patriot Act

The party line often heard from Neo-Cons in their attempts to defend the Patriot Act either circulate around the contention that the use of the Patriot Act has never been abused or that it isn't being used against American citizens. Here is an archive of articles that disproves both of these fallacies.

The Patriot Act was the boiler plate from which all subsequent attacks on the Constitution were formed.

2) Total Information Awareness

"Every purchase you make with a credit card, every magazine subscription you buy and medical prescription you fill, every Web site you visit and e-mail you send or receive, every academic grade you receive, every bank deposit you make, every trip you book and every event you attend — all these transactions and communications will go into what the Defense Department describes as "a virtual, centralized grand database," infamously wrote New York Times writer William Safire, announcing the birth of Total Information Awareness, a kind of Echelon on steroids introduced a year after 9/11.

TIA was not canned, it was simply removed from the newspaper, renamed and continues to operate under a guise of different programs.

3) USA Patriot Act II

The second Patriot Act was a mirror image of powers that Julius Caesar and Adolf Hitler gave themselves. Whereas the First Patriot Act only gutted the First, Third, Fourth and Fifth Amendments, and seriously damaged the Seventh and the Tenth, the Second Patriot Act reorganized the entire Federal government as well as many areas of state government under the dictatorial control of the Justice Department, the Office of Homeland Security and the FEMA NORTHCOM military command.

The Domestic Security Enhancement Act 2003, also known as the Second Patriot Act is by its very structure the definition of dictatorship.

4) Military Commissions Act

Slamming the final nail in the coffin of everything America used to stand for, the boot-licking U.S. Senate gave President Bush the legal authority to abduct and sexually mutilate American citizens and American children in the name of the war on terror in passing the Military Commissions Act and officially ending Habeas Corpus.

There is nothing in the "detainee" legislation that protects American citizens from being kidnapped by their own government and tortured.

The New York Times stated that the legislation introduced, "A dangerously broad definition of “illegal enemy combatant” in the bill could subject legal residents of the United States, as well as foreign citizens living in their own countries, to summary arrest and indefinite detention with no hope of appeal. The president could give the power to apply this label to anyone he wanted."

Yale Law Professor Bruce Ackerman states in the L.A. Times, "The compromise legislation....authorizes the president to seize American citizens as enemy combatants, even if they have never left the United States. And once thrown into military prison, they cannot expect a trial by their peers or any other of the normal protections of the Bill of Rights."

Similarly, law Professor Marty Lederman explains: "this [subsection (ii) of the definition of 'unlawful enemy combatant'] means that if the Pentagon says you're an unlawful enemy combatant -- using whatever criteria they wish -- then as far as Congress, and U.S. law, is concerned, you are one, whether or not you have had any connection to 'hostilities' at all."

5) John Warner Defense Authorization Act

The Bush Junta quietly "tooled up" to utilize the U.S. military in engaging American dissidents after the next big crisis, with a frightening and overlooked piece of legislation that was passed alongside the Military Commissions Act, the John Warner Defense Authorization Act, which greased the skids for armed confrontation and abolishes posse comitatus.

6) Illegal Domestic Wiretapping Program

"Months after the Sept. 11 attacks, President Bush secretly authorized the National Security Agency to eavesdrop on Americans and others inside the United States to search for evidence of terrorist activity without the court-approved warrants ordinarily required for domestic spying, according to government officials," reported the New York Times on December 16, 2005

The secret warrantless spying program was a complete violation of both the 4th Amendment and FISA.

7) Expansion of Illegal Domestic Wiretapping Program

Not content with now being lawfully allowed to force ISP's and cell phone companies to turn over data about customers without a warrant, the Bush administration is pushing for even more authority to spy on American citizens, and has already been handed a 6 month window within which to impose any surveillance policy it likes, and for that program to remain legal in perpetuity.

The administration has a 6 month window in which to impose any surveillance program it chooses and that program will go unchallenged and remain legally binding in perpetuity - it cannot be revoked. Under the definitions of the legislation, Bush has been granted absolute dictator status for a minimum of 6 months.

If he so chooses, and so long as it's implemented within the next half year, Bush could build a database of every website visited by every American - and the policy would be immune from Congressional challenge even after the "surveillance gap" legislation reaches its sunset

8) Martial Law Presidential Decision Directive 51

New legislation signed on May 9, 2007, declares that in the event of a "catastrophic event", the President can take total control over the government and the country, bypassing all other levels of government at the state, federal, local, territorial and tribal levels, and thus ensuring total unprecedented dictatorial power.

The National Security and Homeland Security Presidential Directive, which also places the Secretary of Homeland Security in charge of domestic "security", was signed earlier this month without the approval or oversight of Congress and seemingly supercedes the National Emergency Act which allows the president to declare a national emergency but also requires that Congress have the authority to "modify, rescind, or render dormant" such emergency authority if it believes the president has acted inappropriately.

9) Destruction of the Dollar

Former World Bank Vice President, Chief Economist and Nobel Prize winner Joseph Stiglitz has predicted a global economic crash within 24 months - unless the current downturn is successfully managed. Asked if the situation was being properly handled Stiglitz emphatically responded "no,".

Stiglitz caused controversy in October 2001 when he exposed rampant corruption within the IMF and blew the whistle on their nefarious methods of inducing countries to fall under their debt before stripping them of sovereignty and hollowing out their economies. Stiglitz agreed that the process of hijacking and looting key infrastructure on the part of the IMF and World Bank, as an offshoot of predatory globalization, had now moved from the third world to Europe, the United States and Canada.

10) Amnesty & The North American Union

The open plan to merge the US with Mexico and Canada and create a Pan American Union has long been a Globalist brainchild but its very real and prescient implementation on behalf of the Council on Foreign Relations has finally been reported on by mainstream news outlets.

The framework on which the American Union is being pegged is the NAFTA Super Highway, a four football-fields-wide leviathan that stretches from southern Mexico through the US up to Montreal Canada .Coupled with Bush's blanket amnesty program, the Pan American Union is the final jigsaw piece for the total dismantling of America as we know it.

The battle against climate change has just got its toughest new recruit: Jack Bauer, hero of the TV show 24. The programme's creators, Fox, are promising their next series will introduce a host of environmentally-friendly production measures, as the industry gropes for ways to make carbon neutral television.

The producers will swap diesel generators at the studio for electric power and buy the electricity from renewable sources, and put the crew in hybrid vehicles or convert the giant production trucks to biodiesel.

And global warming will be incorporated into the plot, too, once again putting Hollywood in the forefront of bringing the issue to public attention in America. A Fox spokesman insisted the carbon reductions were real, not a publicity stunt to promote the show's upcoming storylines.

By cutting its carbon footprint by a planned one-twentyfourth, the show is expected to heavily publicise a "carbon-neutral" season finale when it is aired next summer. Filming is to start in the next few weeks.

"Global warming is a crime for which we are all guilty, from our cars, our homes and our workplaces," said Kiefer Sutherland, who plays Jack Bauer. "All of us at 24 understand the urgency of this problem and, over the next year, we will be implementing creative new ways to produce our show and significantly reduce our carbon footprint."

Sutherland will also present a series of public education videos designed to highlight simple measures that people can take to reduce their own contributions to global warming.

Demolishing the myths that are destroying our world

This is a long one.

Nearly two hours and it could be tightened up significantly, but from the point of view of content and clarity this is one of the finest expository films ever made.

And it's needed desperately now.

People who are big fans of organized religion, especially US-based Fascist-style Christianity, will be offended by Section One

If you insist that 9-11 was the work of men in caves, you'll find Section Two annoying because will demolish your fantasies.

Section Three will stretch your brain, especially if you've never given thought to how money is created.

If money is oxygen to modern life (and it is), then not understanding who controls the money supply and what they do with that control is near suicidal.

I honestly don't know if there's time for us, but one thing is for certain: if we don't wake up and wake up fast, we're heading down a slippery slope. This movie is a spectacular wake up call.

Because of the demand, there are lots of streaming problems with this one, but it's well worth the wait.

ViewZone asked me to write a story about the Mayan Calendar. There is a common belief that the calendar holds a prophecy that the end of the world will happen in 2012. At the time, I knew very little about the whole topic and when I began doing the research. I like to think I had an open mind. My investigation began with mainstream archaeology and the expert interpretations of the calendar. But it soon took a turn that made my hair literally stand on end. I am now convinced that these prophecies are true.

To understand what is likely to happen to Earth and it's people, you will need to remain calm and try to follow the facts. It's not as simple as some people describe. The Department of Defense is planning to implant microchips in soldiers' brains for monitoring their health information, and has already awarded a $1.6 million contract to the Center for Bioelectronics, Biosensors and Biochips (C3B) at Clemson University for the development of an implantable "biochip".

Soldiers fear that the biochip, about the size of a grain of rice, which measures and relays information on soldiers vital signs 24 hours a day, can be used to put them under surveillance even when they are off duty.

But Anthony Guiseppi-Elie, C3B director and Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and Bioengineering claims the that the invivo biosensors will save lives as first responders to the trauma scene could inject the biochip into the wounded victim and gather data almost immediately.

He believes that the device has other long-term potential applications, such as monitoring astronauts’ vital signs during long-duration space flights and reading blood-sugar levels for diabetics.

“We now lose a large percentage of patients to bleeding, and getting vital information such as how much oxygen is in the tissue back to ER physicians and medical personnel can often mean the difference between life and death,” said Guiseppi-Elie. “Our goal is to improve the quality and expediency of care for fallen soldiers and civilian trauma victims.” The biochip also may be injected as a precaution to future traumas."

Clemson scientists have formulated a gel that mimics human tissue and reduces the chances of the body rejecting the biochip, which has been a problem in the past.

The researcher predicts the biochip is five years away from human trials, and the DoD could start implanting microchips in soldiers bodies soon after.

ZIMBABWE'S inflation rate could hit 100,000 per cent by the end of the year, the International Monetary Fund predicted yesterday.

The forecast came as the country introduced its latest banknote: for 200,000 dollars, just enough to buy a small bag of onions.

The new bill is worth £400 at Zimbabwe's official rate of exchange, set by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe. On the widely used black market, it is worth a measly 75p.

The central bank said it was introducing the new note - the latest of Zimbabwe's infamous paper bearer cheques - for the "convenience" of businesses and consumers fed up of lugging around huge wads of money.

But the bill is not going to stretch very far, especially after Robert Mugabe's controversial price slash early this month, which has left shelves and fridges empty in shops and supermarkets across this once-prosperous southern African country.

These days, Z$200,000 will buy a struggling Zimbabwean housewife just one and a half bars of locally produced Dove soap. It won't be enough for a bag of rice, currently selling under the counter at about Z$230,000 per kg.

And don't even think about fuel. Garages ran dry more than two weeks ago: if you're lucky enough to find petrol on the black market, it'll cost you at least Z$300,000 per litre.

Mr Mugabe is losing the inflation battle.

Abdoulaye Bio Tchane, director of the IMF's Africa department, said yesterday from Maputo in Mozambique: "If recent monthly trends continue, IMF staff projects that year-on-year inflation could well exceed 100,000 per cent by year-end.

"Economic prospects are bleak, gross domestic product will continue to contract in 2007 and inflation will spiral higher. Price controls that are being enforced are likely to exacerbate shortages and ultimately fuel further inflation".

The Central Statistical Office stopped publishing inflation data two months ago, when the rate rose past 3,000 per cent.

Analysts said last week the figure for June could have topped 13,000 per cent, based on a comparison of consumer basket prices published by the Consumer Council of Zimbabwe.

The forecast will not please the 83-year-old Zimbabwean president, who wants to keep prices down ahead of next year's presidential and parliamentary polls.

The former guerrilla leader has been in power since independence from Britain in 1980.

State-approved analysts last month promised the Herald daily - the government mouthpiece - that month-on-month inflation rates would soon drop to below 50 per cent because of the price war.

Mr Mugabe was forced to introduce the new banknote on the day he was due to scrap his old currency.

Zimbabwe's bearer cheques were only ever supposed to be valid until 31 July, 2007, when a new, stable currency was to be introduced. Last weekend, the authorities quietly admitted the notes would have to remain in place for another year.

With spectacular disregard for the rules of economics, Mr Mugabe has vowed to print even more money for underfunded municipal projects.

"Where money for projects has not been found, we will print it," the former guerrilla leader told town councillors on Friday, apparently ignoring the generally accepted view that printing money is a recipe for inflation.

Ironically, the jaunty new red and grey 200,000 bearer cheques carry their own glaring picture of failure and mismanagement.

They're decorated with an image of the twin cooling towers of Hwange Power Station, which was Africa's largest thermal power station north of the Limpopo River when it was completed in 1987.

Reports say the power station has now fallen into disrepair and is operating at less than 60 per cent capacity, leaving many Zimbabweans in the dark for hours each day.

Comment: I sometimes think that Zimbabwe's hyper inflation is a trail run by the central bankers just like how Katrina was used as a trail run to see how far people could go without food or aid (Since FEMA didn't do a thing and deliberately got in the way to prevent aid from outside). I could very easily see this (Hyper inflation) happening here in the near future where the greenback is being printed now like it is going out of style and since March 2006 the Fed Res no longer publishes the M-3 aggregate so no one knows how much money is actually being pumped into the US economy (to keep it going) or what those dollars are actually worth these days. If anyone is interested in hyper inflation of Germany in 1923 here is an excellent article where their currency (the German Reichsmark) lost value from 2.6 in 1919 (End of WW1) to 726,000,000,000 in November 1923. Notice how quickly the GR lost value in the last 6 months as people lost confidence in their own currency. They used wheelbarrows to bring money to the store for bread and burned money for fires since it was cheaper than newspaper!

Michael Anthony, 25, was watching the New York Mets lose a game on Saturday from his home in the borough of Queens when he began furiously banging on the walls, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said in a statement on Monday.

His father Fred Fischman shouted at him to stop, but Anthony punched him in the face and threw him to the ground, according to the criminal charges.

When Anthony's mother, Maria Fischman, 61, tried to intervene, prosecutors said he stabbed her once in the head with a knife before chasing her into a bedroom where he struck her several times with the 20 pound (9 kilogram) barbell.

"It is difficult to imagine a crime more heinous than that of a son viciously attacking his parents and, in the process, fatally beating his mother to death," Brown said.
Anthony has been remanded in custody and faces a maximum of life in prison if convicted.

Connie Fogal says the SPP ["Security and Prosperity Partnership"] is the "hostile takeover" of the apparatus of democratic government and an end to the "rule of law". There has been a kind of coup d'état over the government operations of Canada, U.S.A. and Mexico.

The first formal step towards the NAU was NAFTA. Ron Pastor of the Council on Foreign Relations has affirmed that. The Canadian Action Party, a registered federal sovereigntist political party in Canada, began as a party in 1997 precisely because none of the mainstream parties were calling for the clear, outright, unequivocal abrogation of NAFTA, or for control of our national monetary system.

Even now, our mainstream Canadian political parties and significant citizen groups are still stuck on re-negotiation of NAFTA (they talk of fair trade) which completely misses the point. As such, they remain blinded, and of no use to the citizens who care about our nation and our sovereignty, our independence, our civil liberties, our civil rights, our culture, our freedom .

The second formal step was the integration and subjugation of Canada's military into the US military command under NORAD, NORTHCOM, and the Bi-National Planning Agreement. That is why our Canadian military is in Afghanistan.

The third formal step in the creation of the NAU was the implementation of the respective liberty-stripping anti-terrorist legislations, the Patriot Act in the USA and the Anti-terrorist Act in Canada. This has been the mechanism to implement the police state apparatus necessary to enforce Fortress America.

The fourth formal step is the SPP, Security and Prosperity Partnership Agreement. That agreement is a "hostile takeover" of the Executive branch of government, a coup d'état over the government operations of Canada, U.S.A. and Mexico.

(The three branches of democratic governance are: 1, the legislative arm, i.e., the policy makers, the people we elect; 2, the judicial arm, i.e., judges who interpret and apply the laws created by the policy makers; and 3, the executive arm, i.e., the civil service, the bureaucracy, who implement and run the policy and operations of government.)

The SPP is a treasonous metamorphosis of our federal and provincial government bureaucracies into formal instruments to implement the agenda of the shadow government - the military/ industrial/ financial complex exemplified by the Canadian Council of Chief Executives who in turn are dominated by the U.S Council on Foreign Relations, and the US military apparatus. The S.P.P. has created the competitiveness council (10 to 16 people from industry and academe unelected by citizens, unaccountable to citizens, unrepresentative of citizens ) in each of Canada, U.S.A., and Mexico. They meet with our Prime Minister and the two Presidents. They actively direct the restructuring of the civil service apparatus and governance of Canada, U.S., and Mexico away from instruments serving the public interest and nationhood, and into tools to serve the power and greed of the industrial, financial, military complex. This Competitiveness Council will be at Montebello directing the three leaders in August, 2007 finalizing the last steps of the NAU.

Since March, 2005, under the direction of three senior cabinet ministers of each country, about 100 working groups of unelected officials from government and industry have been meeting at taxpayer expense deciding on and directing the implementation of the restructuring of the apparatus of governance and the form of rule over the people. Government of the people, by the people,for the people has been eliminated while those people we have elected stand idly in the sidelines apparently blissfully oblivious, or deliberately careless of the termination of their policy making role except as a rubber stamp. Those we have elected have abused their responsibility to protect our power, the people's power. They have permitted an undemocratic elite to control them and the operation of government. It is by us, the general citizenry, that Members of Parliament and Members of Legislative Assemblies and city councillors,and Senators and congressmen are supposed to be ruled in all matters, not by the military/ industrial/ complex that General Dwight D. Eisenhower warned about on his final address to his nation. The Prime Minister and Presidents along with their most senior Cabinet members and officials really now do apply a "Divine Right of Kings" mentality to their role. They have metamorphosed into a cancer rotting the life out of our democracies.

For this reason the Canadian Action Party calls for electoral reform not just in how we elect candidates, but why and how the bureaucracy operates. In particular, we call for a curb on the exercise of power in the executive branch of government, and especially in the P.M.s office.This need is of paramount importance because it is the key to why and how three nations (Canada, USA,Mexico) are being dismantled.

Remember, if you believe in democratic accountable representation, there must be a universal franchise. Government of the people, by the people,for the people still is right. It is not government by officials of any organization or interest group whether public or private who are unelected by, unrepresentative, and unaccountable to the general public. We need to reform our government structure so that we can recall and replace any person we elect when they fail to keep their promise or do their duty to us, the citizenry ; and we also need to turn our executive arm of government back to being the servant of the citizens.

The Security and Prosperity Partnership Agreement (S.P.P) is deliberately not a formal international treaty such as NAFTA which is set out in a system of rule by international law .As a legal treaty the SPP would never have flown because it would have been exposed to scrutiny. It remains a work in progress agreement of incredible treacherous magnitude. It has already succeeded in implementing profound changes to three nations integrating the geographical region of North America. We do not even know the full extent of what has been completed or what little is left to be accomplished..

We know that a powerful think tank chaired by former Sen. Sam Nunn and guided by trustees including Richard Armitage, Zbigniew Brzezinski, Harold Brown, William Cohen and Henry Kissinger, is in the final stages of preparing a report to the White House and U.S. Congress on the benefits of integrating the U.S., Mexico and Canada into one political, economic and security bloc.

We know that the final report, published in English, Spanish and French, is scheduled for submission to all three governments by Sept. 30, according to the http://www.csis.org/ Center for Strategic & International Studies.

We know that the data collected for the report is based on seven secret roundtable sessions involving between 21 and 45 people and conducted by CSIS. The participants are politicians, business people, labour leaders and academics from all three countries with equal representation.

It will be interesting to see who the think tank representatives will be that appear before our Canadian Parliament and how it is presented since so many of our Canadian MP's deny this integration is happening. They need to realize that the vote still works in Canada and if they want to be re-elected, they must repel the submissions for integration. In fact, their duty to us is to refuse to hear such a delegation. SInce when has it become lawful to entertain discussion or debate on any form of treason??

This kind of presentation by such influential players will likely be a formalization of the integration as a done deal.

We, the citizens, must demonstrate to our governments that we demand an end to the integration of North America . And, we must tell them we are not asking for a front row seat at our hanging party. We do not want to be involved or to have them involved in any negotiations or discussions or debate about how our nations are to die. We already know we do not want a North American Union, period!!! They must repel the formal instructions coming to them this fall from the shadow government.

Talk-show host, Hal Turner, has reported receiving a leaked copy of a "Top Secret" U.S. military document stating that massive citizen unrest in now inevitable and that it plans to deal with American dissidents as insurgents. The tactics are to be the same as used against "insurgents" in U.S occupied countries in the Middle East.

I cannot vouch for the validity of this document but I can say that it has the sound of truth. It is exactly the kind of startegic planning one would expect from a government with a rising tide of unrest from its citizens. We are providing a link to Hal Turner's report because we believe that the document probably is authentic, and Americans need to know what may be coming down the pike in the near future.

There is one point in this report, however, on which we disagree, and that is the primary reason for this short introduction. Turner believes that a physical confrontation between the U.S. military and an uprising of the American people would lead to the defeat of the military and an overthrow of the government. The implied message is:"Bring 'em on!"

I do not agree with this assessment. First, even though there are millions of gun owners in America, they are not in an organized milita or even in neighborhood watch groups for security against theives. Their numbers are large, but an unorganized mass with no leaders, no, training, no strategy, no communications, no funding, and no long-range goals is no match for an efficient and disciplined military force, especially when that force posesses weaponry that is a thousand times more powerful. The fact that the military in Iraq has not overcome its opposition is a good point but we should not overlook the fact that the military does control the government. Yes, Iraq is in turmoil, but the U.S. military will run the country as long as it is there.

The strategy of Freedom Force is, and always will be, to come to power by Constitutional means, not by force of arms. It is true that such a strategy seems to be less and less realistic with each new law and executive order, but we stand firm on our conviction that, without dominent influence within the power centers of society, true reform is not possible; but, with power centers on the side of freedom, all things are not only possible but inevitable.It will be a long and protracted war, but the only battlefield on which we can win is within the power centers of society, not barracades in streets and on rooftops.

England under water: scientists confirm global warming link to increased rain

It's official: the heavier rainfall in Britain is being caused by climate change, a major new scientific study will reveal this week, as the country reels from summer downpours of unprecedented ferocity.

More intense rainstorms across parts of the northern hemisphere are being generated by man-made global warming, the study has established for the first time an effect which has long been predicted but never before proved.

The study's findings will be all the more dramatic for being disclosed as Britain struggles to recover from the phenomenal drenching of the past few days, during which more than a month's worth of rain fell in a few hours in some places, and floods forced thousands from their homes.

The "major rainfall event" of last Friday fully predicted as such by the Met Office has given the country a quite exceptional battering, with the Thames still rising. In Gloucester water levels had reached 34 feet, just 12 inches below flood defences the same level as during the flood of 1947 although a police spokesman said last night that the River Severn had stopped rising.

Last night vast areas of the country around Gloucestershire and Worcestershire were still inundated, large numbers of people in temporary accommodation, transport links were widely disrupted, and yet more householders were standing by to be flooded in their turn, in one of the biggest civil emergencies Britain has seen.

About 150,000 residents in Gloucestershire were left without drinking water when the Mythe Water Treatment Works in Tewkesbury became inoperable after flooding. Another 200,000 people are at risk of losing their supplies. The water shortages may last until Wednesday and 600 water tanks were being drafted to the area.

Panic buying of bottled water was reported, with supermarkets selling out of stocks, and there were contamination problems in south London, where 80,000 households and businesses in the Sutton area were advised to boil their water after rain got into a tank. Yet another potential danger was from car thieves; West Mercia police warned drivers who had abandoned their cars in the floodwater to collect them quickly to prevent theft.

The Great Flood of July is all the more remarkable for following right on from the Great Flood of June, which caused similar havoc in northern towns such as Doncaster and Hull, after a similar series of astonishingly torrential downpours on 24 June.

Meteorologists agree that the miserably wet British summer of 2007 has generally been caused by a southward shift towards Britain of the jetstream, the high-level airflow that brings depressions eastwards across the Atlantic. This is fairly normal. But debate is going on about whether climate change may be responsible for the intensity of the two freak rainfall episodes, which have caused flooding the like of which has never been seen in many places.

This is because the computer models used to predict the future course of global warming all show heavier rainfall, and indeed, "extreme rainfall events", as one of its principal consequences.

The new study, carried out jointly by several national climate research institutes using their supercomputer climate models, including the Hadley Centre of the UK Met Office, does not prove that any one event, including the rain of the past few days in Britain, is climate-change related.

But it certainly supports the idea, by showing that in recent decades rainfall has increased over several areas of the world, including the mid-latitudes of the northern hemisphere, and linking this directly, for the first time, to global warming caused by human emissions of greenhouse gases.

The study is being published in the journal Nature on Wednesday, and its details are under embargo and cannot be reported until then. But its main findings have caused a stir, and are being freely discussed by climate scientists in the Met Office, the Hadley Centre and the Department for Environment For Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

One source familiar with the study's conclusions said: "What this does is establish for the first time that there is a distinct 'human fingerprint' in the changes in precipitation patterns the increases in rainfall observed in the northern hemisphere mid-latitudes, which includes Britain.

"That means, it is not just the climate's natural variability which has caused the increases, but there is a detectable human cause climate change, caused by our greenhouse gas emissions. The 'human fingerprint' has been detected before in temperature rises, but never before in rainfall. So this is very significant.

"Some people would argue that you can't take a single event and pin that on climate change, but what happened in Britain last Friday fits quite easily with these conclusions. It does seem to have a certain resonance with what they're finding in this research."

The Hadley Centre lead scientist involved with the study was Dr Peter Stott, who specialises in finding "human fingerprints" sometimes referred to as anthropogenic signals on the changing climate.

Last September Dr Stott, who was not available for comment yesterday, published research showing that the climate of central England had warmed by a full degree Celsius in the past 40 years, and that this could be directly linked to human causes the first time that man-made climate change had been identified at such a local level.

The human fingerprint is detected by making computer simulations of the recent past climate, with and without emissions of greenhouse gases and then comparing the results with what has actually been observed in the real world.

In Dr Stott's research, and in the study to be published on Wednesday, the observed rises in temperature and rainfall could be clearly accounted for by the scenario in which emissions were prominent.

The conclusions of the new rainfall study are regarded as all the more robust as they are the joint work of several major national climate research bodies, led by Environment Canada, with each using its own supercomputer climate model.

Global warming is likely to lead to higher rainfall because a warming atmosphere contains more water vapour and more energy. Since climate prediction began 20 years ago, heavier rainfall over Britain has been a consistent theme.

BURBANK, Calif., July 26 (UPI) -- Michael Thursday said the Bush administration has served him with a subpoena regarding his trip to Cuba during the making of his new film, "Sicko."

The Oscar-winning filmmaker, who appeared Thursday on NBC's "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," said he was notified about the subpoena at the network's studios in Burbank, Calif.

"I haven't even told my own family yet," Moore said. "I was just informed when I was back there with Jay that the Bush administration has now issued a subpoena for me."

Moore filmed the trip as part of his film comparing the U.S. healthcare system with government healthcare systems in other countries.

He took three Sept. 11, 2001, emergency rescue workers to Guantanamo Bay "because I heard the al-Qaida terrorists we have in the camps there, detained, are receiving free dental, medical, eye care, the whole deal, and our own (Sept. 11) rescue workers can't get that in New York City."

Moore said the film's distributor, the Weinstein Co., will donate 11 percent of "Sicko's" box-office receipts Aug. 11 to "help these workers and the other workers who need help."

The looming collapse of the US military in Iraq, of which a number of generals and former generals, including former Chief of Staff Colin Powell, have warned, is happening none too soon, as it my be the best hope for preventing military rule here at home.

From the looks of things, the Bush/Cheney regime has been working assiduously to pave the way for a declaration of military rule, such that at this point it really lacks only the pretext to trigger a suspension of Constitutional government. They have done this with the active support of Democrats in Congress, though most of the heavy lifting was done by the last, Republican-led Congress.

The first step, or course, was the first Authorization for Use of Military Force, passed in September 2001, which the president has subsequently used to claimÐimproperly, but so what? Ðthat the whole world, including the US, is a battlefield in a so-called War on Terror, and that he has extra-Constitutional unitary executive powers to ignore laws passed by Congress. As constitutional scholar and former Reagan-era associate deputy attorney general Bruce Fein observes, that one claim, that the US is itself a battlefield, is enough to allow this or some future president to declare martial law, since you can always declare martial law on a battlefield. All hed need would be a pretext, like another terrorist attack inside the U.S.

The 2001 AUMF was followed by the PATRIOT Act, passed in October 2001, which undermined much of the Bill of Rights. Around the same time, the president began a campaign of massive spying on Americans by the National Security Agency, conducted without any warrants or other judicial review. It was and remains a program that is clearly aimed at American dissidents and at the administrations political opponents, since the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court would never have raised no objections to spying on potential terrorists. (And it, and other government spying programs, have resulted in the governments having a list now of some 325,000 suspected terrorists!)

The other thing we saw early on was the establishment of an underground government-within-a-government, though the activation, following 9-11, of the so-called Continuity of Government protocol, which saw heads of federal agencies moved secretly to an underground bunker where, working under the direction of Vice President Dick Cheney, the government functioned out of sight of Congress and the public for critical months.

It was also during the first year following 9-11 that the Bush/Cheney regime began its programs of arrest and detention without chargeÐmostly of resident aliens, but also of American citizensÐand of kidnapping and torture in a chain of gulag prisons overseas and at the Navy base at Guantanamo Bay.

The following year, Attorney General John Ashcroft began his program to develop a mass network of tens of millions of citizen spiesÐOperation TIPS. That program, which had considerable support from key Democrats (notably Sen. Joe Lieberman), was curtailed by Congress when key conservatives got wind of the scale of the thing, but the concept survives without a name, and is reportedly being expanded today.

Meanwhile, last October Bush and Cheney, with the help of a compliant Congress, put in place some key elements needed for a military putsch. There was the overturning of the venerable Posse Comitatus Act of 1878, which barred the use of active duty military inside the United States for police-type functions, and the revision of the Insurrection Act, so as to empower the president to take control of National Guard units in the 50 states even over the objections of the governors of those states.

Put this together with the wholly secret construction now under waycourtesy of a $385-million grant by the US Army Corps of Engineers to Halliburton subsidiary KBR Incof detention camps reportedly capable of confining as many as 400,000 people, and a recent report that the Pentagon has a document, dated June 1, 2007, classified Top Secret, which declares there to be a developing insurgency within the U.S, and which lays out a whole martial law counterinsurgency campaign against legal dissent, and you have all the ingredients for a military takeover of the United States.

As we go about our daily livesour shopping, our escapist movie watching, and even our protesting and political organizingÐwe need to be aware that there is a real risk that it could all blow up, and that we could find ourselves facing armed, uniformed troops at our doors.

Bruce Fein isnt an alarmist. He says he doesnt see martial law coming tomorrow. But he is also realistic. He says, This is all sitting around like a loaded gun waiting to go off. I think the risk of martial law is trivial right now, but the minute there is a terrorist attack, then it is real. And it stays with us after Bush and Cheney are gone, because terrorism stays with us forever. (It may be significant that Hillary Clinton, the leading Democratic candidate for president, has called for the revocation of the 2002 Authorization for Use of Military Force against Iraq, but not of the earlier 2001 AUMF which Bush claims makes him commander in chief of a borderless, endless war on terror.)

Indeed, the revised Insurrection Act (10. USC 331-335) approved by Congress and signed into law by Bush last October, specifically says that the president can federalize the National Guard to suppress public disorder in the event of national disorder, epidemic, other serious public health emergency, terrorist attack or incident. That determination, the act states, is solely the presidents to make. Congress is not involved.

Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT), chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has added an amendment to the upcoming Defense bill, restoring the Insurrection Act to its former versionÐa move that has the endorsement of all 50 governorsbut Fein argues that would not solve the problem, since Bush still claims that the U.S. is a battlefield. Besides, a Leahy aide concedes that Bush could sign the next Defense Appropriations bill and then use a signing statement to invalidate the Insurrection Act rider.

Fein argues that the only real defense against the looming disaster of a martial law declaration would be for Congress to vote for a resolution determining that there is no War on terror. But they are such cowards they will never do that, he says.

That leaves us with the military.

If ordered to turn their guns and bayonets on their fellow Americans, would our heroes in uniform follow their consciences, and their oaths to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States? Or would they follow the orders of their Commander in Chief?

It has to be a plus that National Guard and Reserve units are on their third and sometimes fourth deployments to Iraq, and are fuming at the abuse. It has to be a plus that active duty troops are refusing to re-enlist in drovesÐespecially mid-level officers.

If we are headed for martial law, better that it be with a broken military. Maybe if its broken badly enough, the administration will be afraid to test the idea.

Uh, First of all, the, I'd like to say, that the conference at Santa Barbara was not directly concerned with the control of the mind. That was a conference, there have been two of them now, at the University of California Medical center in San Francisco, one this year which I didn't attend, and one two years ago where there was a considerable discussion on this subject. At Santa Barbara we were talking about technology in general and the effects it's likely to have on society and the problems related to technological transplanting of technology into underdeveloped countries.

Well now in regard to this problem of the ultimate revolution, this has been very well summed up by the moderator. In the past we can say that all revolutions have essentially aimed at changing the environment in order to change the individual. I mean there's been the political revolution, the economic revolution, in the time of the reformation, the religious revolution. All these aimed, not directly at the human being, but at his surroundings. So that by modifying the surroundings you did achieve, did one remove the effect of the human being.

Today we are faced, I think, with the approach of what may be called the ultimate revolution, the final revolution, where man can act directly on the mind-body of his fellows. Well needless to say some kind of direct action on human mind-bodies has been going on since the beginning of time. But this has generally been of a violent nature. The Techniques of terrorism have been known from time immemorial and people have employed them with more or less ingenuity sometimes with the utmost cruelty, sometimes with a good deal of skill acquired by a process of trial and error finding out what the best ways of using torture, imprisonment, constraints of various kinds.

But, as, I think it was (sounds like Mettenicht) said many years ago, you can do everything with {garbled} except sit on them. If you are going to control any population for any length of time, you must have some measure of consent, it's exceedingly difficult to see how pure terrorism can function indefinitely. It can function for a fairly long time, but I think sooner or later you have to bring in an element of persuasion an element of getting people to consent to what is happening to them.

It seems to me that the nature of the ultimate revolution with which we are now faced is precisely this: That we are in process of developing a whole series of techniques which will enable the controlling oligarchy who have always existed and presumably will always exist to get people to love their servitude. This is the, it seems to me, the ultimate in malevolent revolutions shall we say, and this is a problem which has interested me many years and about which I wrote thirty years ago, a fable, Brave New World, which is an account of society making use of all the devices available and some of the devices which I imagined to be possible making use of them in order to, first of all, to standardize the population, to iron out inconvenient human differences, to create, to say, mass produced models of human beings arranged in some sort of scientific caste system. Since then, I have continued to be extremely interested in this problem and I have noticed with increasing dismay a number of the predictions which were purely fantastic when I made them thirty years ago have come true or seem in process of coming true.

A number of techniques about which I talked seem to be here already. And there seems to be a general movement in the direction of this kind of ultimate revolution, a method of control by which a people can be made to enjoy a state of affairs by which any decent standard they ought not to enjoy. This, the enjoyment of servitude, Well this process is, as I say, has gone on for over the years, and I have become more and more interested in what is happening.

And here I would like briefly to compare the parable of Brave New World with another parable which was put forth more recently in George Orwell's book, Nineteen Eighty- Four. Orwell wrote his book between, I think between 45 and 48 at the time when the Stalinist terror regime was still in Full swing and just after the collapse of the Hitlerian terror regime. And his book which I admire greatly, it's a book of very great talent and extraordinary ingenuity, shows, so to say, a projection into the future of the immediate past, of what for him was the immediate past, and the immediate present, it was a projection into the future of a society where control was exercised wholly by terrorism and violent attacks upon the mind-body of individuals.

Whereas my own book which was written in 1932 when there was only a mild dictatorship in the form of Mussolini in existence, was not overshadowed by the idea of terrorism, and I was therefore free in a way in which Orwell was not free, to think about these other methods of control, these non-violent methods and my, I'm inclined to think that the scientific dictatorships of the future, and I think there are going to be scientific dictatorships in many parts of the world, will be probably a good deal nearer to the brave new world pattern than to the 1984 pattern, they will a good deal nearer not because of any humanitarian qualms of the scientific dictators but simply because the BNW pattern is probably a good deal more efficient than the other.

That if you can get people to consent to the state of affairs in which they're living. The state of servitude the state of being, having their differences ironed out, and being made amenable to mass production methods on the social level, if you can do this, then you have, you are likely, to have a much more stable and lasting society. Much more easily controllable society than you would if you were relying wholly on clubs and firing squads and concentration camps. So that my own feeling is that the 1984 picture was tinged of course by the immediate past and present in which Orwell was living, but the past and present of those years does not reflect, I feel, the likely trend of what is going to happen, needless to say we shall never get rid of terrorism, it will always find its way to the surface.

But I think that insofar as dictators become more and more scientific, more and more concerned with the technically perfect, perfectly running society, they will be more and more interested in the kind of techniques which I imagined and described from existing realities in BNW. So that, it seems to me then, that this ultimate revolution is not really very far away, that we, already a number of techniques for bringing about this kind of control are here, and it remains to be seen when and where and by whom they will first be applied in any large scale.

And first let me talk about the, a little bit about the, improvement in the techniques of terrorism. I think there have been improvements. Pavlov after all made some extremely profound observations both on animals and on human beings. And he found among other things that conditioning techniques applied to animals or humans in a state either of psychological or physical stress sank in so to say, very deeply into the mind-body of the creature, and were extremely difficult to get rid of. That they seemed to be embedded more deeply than other forms of conditioning.

And this of course, this fact was discovered empirically in the past. People did make use of many of these techniques, but the difference between the old empirical intuitive methods and our own methods is the difference between the, a sort of, hit and miss craftsman's point of view and the genuinely scientific point of view. I think there is a real difference between ourselves and say the inquisitors of the 16th century. We know much more precisely what we are doing, than they knew and we can extend because of our theoretical knowledge, we can extend what we are doing over a wider area with a greater assurance of being producing something that really works.

In this context I would like to mention the extremely interesting chapters in Dr. William (sounds like Seargent's) Battle for the Mind where he points out how intuitively some of the great religious teachers/leaders of the past hit on the Pavlovian method, he speaks specifically of Wesley's method of producing conversions which were essentially based on the technique of heightening psychological stress to the limit by talking about hellfire and so making people extremely vulnerable to suggestion and then suddenly releasing this stress by offering hopes of heaven and this is a very interesting chapter of showing how completely on purely intuitive and empirical grounds a skilled natural psychologist, as Wesley was, could discover these Pavlovian methods.

Well, as I say, we now know the reason why these techniques worked and there's no doubt at all that we can if we wanted to, carry them much further than was possible in the past. And of course in the history of, recent history of brainwashing, both as applied to prisoners of war and to the lower personnel within the communist party in China, we see that the pavlovian methods have been applied systematically and with evidently with extraordinary efficacy. I think there can be no doubt that by the application of these methods a very large army of totally devoted people has been created. The conditioning has been driven in, so to say, by a kind of psychological iontophoresis into the very depths of the people's being, and has got so deep that it's very difficult to ever be rooted out, and these methods, I think, are a real refinement on the older methods of terror because they combine methods of terror with methods of acceptance that the person who is subjected to a form of terroristic stress but for the purpose of inducing a kind of voluntary quotes acceptance of the state the psychological state in which he has been driven and the state of affairs in which he finds himself.

So there is, as I say, there has been a definite improvement in the, even in the techniques of terrorism. But then we come to the consideration of other techniques, non-terroristic techniques, for inducing consent and inducing people to love their servitude. Here, I don't think I can possibly go into all of them, because I don't know all of them, but I mean I can mention the more obvious methods, which can now be used and are based on recent scientific findings. First of all there are the methods connected with straight suggestion and hypnosis.

I think we know much more about this subject than was known in the past. People of course, always have known about suggestion, and although they didn't know the word 'hypnosis' they certainly practiced it in various ways. But we have, I think, a much greater knowledge of the subject than in the past, and we can make use of our knowledge in ways, which I think the past was never able to make use of it. For example, one of the things we now know for certain, that there is of course an enormous, I mean this has always been known a very great difference between individuals in regard to their suggestibility. But we now know pretty clearly the sort of statistical structure of a population in regard to its suggestibility. Its very interesting when you look at the findings of different fields, I mean the field of hypnosis, the field of administering placebos, for example, in the field of general suggestion in states of drowsiness or light sleep you will find the same sorts of orders of magnitude continually cropping up.

You'll find for example that the experienced hypnotist will tell one that the number of people, the percentage of people who can be hypnotized with the utmost facility (snaps), just like that. is about 20%, and about a corresponding number at the other end of the scale are very, very difficult or almost impossible to hypnotize. But in between lies a large mass of people who can with more or less difficulty be hypnotized, that they can gradually be if you work hard enough at it be got into the hypnotic state, and in the same way the same sort of figures crop up again, for example in relation to the administration of placebos.

A big experiment was carried out three of four years ago in the general hospital in Boston on post-operative cases where several hundred men and woman suffering comparable kinds of pain after serious operations were allowed to, were given injections whenever they asked for them whenever the pain got bad, and the injections were 50% of the time were of morphine, and 50% of water. And about twenty percent of those who went through the experiment, about 20% of them got just as much relief from the distilled waters as from the morphea. About 20% got no relief from the distilled water, and in- between were those who got some relief or got relief occasionally.

So yet again, we see the same sort of distribution, and similarly in regard to what in BNW I called Hypnopedia, the sleep teaching, I was talking not long ago to a man who manufactures records which people can listen to in the, during the light part of sleep, I mean these are records for getting rich, for sexual satisfaction (crowd laughs), for confidence in salesmanship and so on, and he said that its very interesting that these are records sold on a money-back basis, and he says there is regularly between 15% and 20% of people who write indignantly saying the records don't work at all, and he sends the money back at once. There are on the other hand, there are over 20% who write enthusiastically saying they are much richer, their sexual life is much better (laughter) etc, etc. And these of course are the dream clients and they buy more of these records. And in between there are those who don't get much results and they have to have letters written to them saying "Go persist my dear, go on" (laughter) and you will get there, and they generally do get results in the long run.

Well, as I say, on the basis of this, I think we see quite clearly that the human populations can be categorized according to their suggestibility fairly clearly,. I suspect very strongly that this twenty percent is the same in all these cases, and I suspect also that it would not be at all difficult to recognize and {garbled} out who are those who are extremely suggestible and who are those extremely unsuggestible and who are those who occupy the intermediate space. Quite clearly, if everybody were extremely unsuggestible organized society would be quite impossible, and if everybody were extremely suggestible then a dictatorship would be absolutely inevitable. I mean it's very fortunate that we have people who are moderately suggestible in the majority and who therefore preserve us from dictatorship but do permit organized society to be formed. But, once given the fact that there are these 20% of highly suggestible people, it becomes quite clear that this is a matter of enormous political importance, for example, any demagogue who is able to get hold of a large number of these 20% of suggestible people and to organize them is really in a position to overthrow any government in any country.

And I mean, I think this after all, we had the most incredible example in recent years by what can be done by efficient methods of suggestion and persuasion in the form of Hitler. Anyone who has read, for example, (Sounds like Bulloch's) Life of Hitler, comes forth with this horrified admiration for this infernal genius, who really understood human weaknesses I think almost better than anybody and who exploited them with all the resources then available. I mean he knew everything, for example, he knew intuitively this pavlovian truth that condition installed in a state of stress or fatigue goes much deeper than conditioning installed at other times. This of course is why all his big speeches were organized at night. He speaks quite frankly, of course, in Mein Kampf, this is done solely because people are tired at night and therefore much less capable of resisting persuasion than they would be during the day. And in all his techniques he was using, he had discovered intuitively and by trial and error a great many of the weaknesses, which we now know about on a sort of scientific way I think much more clearly than he did.

But the fact remains that this differential of suggestibility this susceptibility to hypnosis I do think is something which has to be considered very carefully in relation to any kind of thought about democratic government . If there are 20% of the people who really can be suggested into believing almost anything, then we have to take extremely careful steps into prevent the rise of demagogues who will drive them on into extreme positions then organize them into very, very dangerous armies, private armies which may overthrow the government.

This is, I say, in this field of pure persuasion, I think we do know much more than we did in the past, and obviously we now have mechanisms for multiplying the demagogues voice and image in a quite hallucinatory way, I mean, the TV and radio, Hitler was making enormous use of the radio, he could speak to millions of people simultaneously. This alone creates an enormous gulf between the modern and the ancient demagogue. The ancient demagogue could only appeal to as many people as his voice could reach by yelling at his utmost, but the modern demagogue could touch literally millions at a time, and of course by the multiplication of his image he can produce this kind of hallucinatory effect which is of enormous hypnotic and suggestive importance.

But then there are the various other methods one can think of which, thank heaven, as yet have not be used, but which obviously could be used. There is for example, the pharmacological method, this is one of the things I talked about in BNW. I invented a hypothetical drug called SOMA, which of course could not exist as it stood there because it was simultaneously a stimulant, a narcotic, and a hallucinogen, which seems unlikely in one substance. But the point is, if you applied several different substances you could get almost all these results even now, and the really interesting things about the new chemical substances, the new mind-changing drugs is this, if you looking back into history its clear that man has always had a hankering after mind changing chemicals, he has always desired to take holidays from himself, but the, and, this is the most extraordinary effect of all that every natural occurring narcotic stimulant, sedative, or hallucinogen, was discovered before the dawn of history, I don't think there is one single one of these naturally occurring ones which modern science has discovered.

Modern science has of course better ways of extracting the active principals of these drugs and of course has discovered numerous ways of synthesizing new substances of extreme power, but the actual discovery of these naturally occurring things was made by primitive man goodness knows how many centuries ago. There is for example, in the underneath the, lake dwellings of the early Neolithic that have been dug up in Switzerland we have found poppy-heads, which looks as though people were already using this most ancient and powerful and dangerous of narcotics, even before the days of the rise of agriculture. So that man was apparently a dope-bag addict before he was a farmer, which is a very curious comment on human nature.

But, the difference, as I say, between the ancient mind-changers, the traditional mind- changers, and the new substances is that they were extremely harmful and the new ones are not. I mean even the permissible mind-changer alcohol is not entirely harmless, as people may have noticed, and I mean the other ones, the non-permissible ones, such as opium and cocaine, opium and its derivatives, are very harmful indeed. They rapidly produce addiction, and in some cases lead at an extraordinary rate to physical degeneration and death.

Whereas these new substances, this is really very extraordinary, that a number of these new mind-changing substances can produce enormous revolutions within the mental side of our being, and yet do almost nothing to the physiological side. You can have an enormous revolution, for example, with LSD-25 or with the newly synthesized drug psilocybin, which is the active principal of the Mexican sacred mushroom. You can have this enormous mental revolution with no more physiological revolution than you would get from drinking two cocktails. And this is a really most extraordinary effect.

And it is of course true that pharmacologists are producing a great many new wonder drugs where the cure is almost worse than the disease. Every year the new edition of medical textbooks contains a longer and longer chapter of what are Iatrogenic diseases, that is to say diseases caused by doctors (laughter} And this is quite true, many of the wonder drugs are extremely dangerous. I mean they can produce extraordinary effects, and in critical conditions they should certainly be used, but they should be used with the utmost caution. But there is evidently a whole class of drugs effecting the CNS which can produce enormous changes in sedation in euphoria in energizing the whole mental process without doing any perceptible harm to the human body, and this presents to me the most extraordinary revolution. In the hands of a dictator these substances in one kind or the other could be used with, first of all, complete harmlessness, and the result would be, you can imagine a euphoric that would make people thoroughly happy even in the most abominable circumstances.

I mean these things are possible. This is the extraordinary thing, I mean after all this is even true with the crude old drugs. I mean, a housemate years ago remarked after reading Milton's Paradise Lost, He Says "And beer does more than Milton can to justify God's ways to man" (laughter). And beer is of course, an extremely crude drug compared to these ones. And you can certainly say that some of the psychic energizers and the new hallucinants could do incomparably more than Milton and all the Theologicians combined could possibly do to make the terrifying mystery of our existence seem more tolerable than it does. And here I think one has an enormous area in which the ultimate revolution could function very well indeed, an area in which a great deal of control could be used by not through terror, but by making life seem much more enjoyable than it normally does. Enjoyable to the point, where as I said before, Human beings come to love a state of things by which any reasonable and decent human standard they ought not to love and this I think is perfectly possible.

But then, very briefly, let me speak about one of the more recent developments in the sphere of neurology, about the implantation of electrodes in the brain. This of course has been done in the large scale in animals and in a few cases its been done in the cases of the hopelessly insane. And anybody who has watched the behavior of rats with electrodes placed in different centers must come away from this experience with the most extraordinary doubts about what on Earth is in store for us if this is got a hold of by a dictator. I saw not long ago some rats in the {garbled} laboratory at UCLA there were two sets of them, one with electrodes planted in the pleasure center, and the technique was they had a bar which they pressed which turned on a very small current for a short space of time which we had a wire connected with that electrode and which stimulated the pleasure center and was evidently absolutely ecstatic was these rats were pressing the bar 18,000 times a day (laughter). Apparently if you kept them from pressing the bar for a day, they'd press it 36,000 times on the following day and would until they fell down in complete exhaustion (laughter) And they would neither eat, nor be interested in the opposite sex but would just go on pressing this bar {pounds on podium}

Then the most extraordinary rats were those were the electrode was planted halfway between the pleasure and the pain center. The result was a kind of mixture of the most wonderful ecstasy and like being on the rack at the same time. And you would see the rats sort of looking at is bar and sort of saying "To be or not to be that is the question". (Laughter) Finally it would approach {Pounds on podium} and go back with this awful I mean, the (sounds like franken huminizer anthropomorphizer), and he would wait some time before pressing the bar again, yet he would always press it again. This was the extraordinary thing.

I noticed in the most recent issue of Scientific American there's a very interesting article on electrodes in the brains of chickens, where the technique is very ingenious, where you sink into their brains a little socket with a screw on it and the electrode can then be screwed deeper and deeper into the brainstem and you can test at any moment according to the depth, which goes at fractions of the mm, what you're stimulating and these creatures are not merely stimulated by wire, they're fitted with a miniature radio receiver which weighs less than an ounce which is attached to them so that they can be communicated with at a distance, I mean they can run about in the barnyard and you could press a button and this particular area of the brain to which the electrode has been screwed down to would be stimulated. You would get this fantastic phenomena, where a sleeping chicken would jump up and run about, or an active chicken would suddenly sit down and go to sleep, or a hen would sit down and act like she's hatching out an egg, or a fighting rooster would go into depression.

The whole picture of the absolute control of the drives is terrifying, and in the few cases in which this has been done with very sick human beings, The effects are evidently very remarkable too, I was talking last summer in England to Grey Walter, who is the most eminent exponent of the EEG technique in England, and he was telling me that he's seen hopeless inmates at asylums with these things in their heads, and these people were suffering from uncontrollable depression, and they had these electrodes inserted into the pleasure center in their brain, however when they felt too bad, they just pressed a button on the battery in their pocket and he said the results were fantastic, the mouth pointing down would suddenly turn up and they'd feel very cheerful and happy. So there again one sees the most extraordinary revolutionary techniques, which are now available to us.

Now, I think what is obviously perfectly clear is that for the present these techniques are not being used except in an experimental way, but I think it is important for us to realize what is happening to make ourselves acquainted with what has already happened, and then use a certain amount of imagination to extrapolate into the future the sort of things that might happen. What might happen if these fantastically powerful techniques were used by unscrupulous people in authority, what on Earth would happen, what sort of society would we get?

And I think it is peculiarly important because as one sees when looking back over history we have allowed in the past all those advances in technology which has profoundly changed our social and individual life to take us by surprise, I mean it seems to me that it was during the late 18 century early 19th century when the new machines were making possible the factory situation. It was not beyond the wit of man to see what was happening and project into the future and maybe forestall the really dreadful consequences which plagued England and most of western Europe and this country for sixty or seventy years, and the horrible abuses of the factory system and if a certain amount of forethought had been devoted to the problem at that time and if people had first of all found out what was happening and then used their imagination to see what might happen, and then had gone on to work out the means by which the worst applications of the techniques would not take place, well then I think western humanity might have been spared about three generations of utter misery which had been imposed on the poor at that time.

And the same way with various technological advances now, I mean we need to think about the problems with automation and more profoundly the problems, which may arise with these new techniques, which may contribute to this ultimate revolution. Our business is to be aware of what is happening, and then to use our imagination to see what might happen, how this might be abused, and then if possible to see that the enormous powers which we now possess thanks to these scientific and technological advances to be used for the benefit of human beings and not for their degradation.

Halliburton Co. said Monday second-quarter net income more than doubled to $1.5 billion, lifted largely by a $933 million gain from the separation of its former subsidiary, KBR Inc.

The result for the April-June period, which amounted to $1.62 per share, compared with income of $591 million, or 55 cents a share, in the year-ago period.

Revenue in the quarter rose 20 percent to $3.7 billion from $3.1 billion a year ago. The oilfield services conglomerate said sales rose worldwide, particularly in the Eastern Hemisphere.

Excluding the gain from the KBR split, Halliburton said income from continuing operations in the quarter was $595 million, or 63 cents a share, up from $498 million, or 47 cents a share, in the second quarter of 2006.

Wall Street analysts polled by Thomson Financial had forecast earnings of 56 cents a share on revenue of $3.5 billion. The Thomson forecast typically excludes one-time items.

Shares jumped $1.34, or 3.66 percent, to $37.91 at the open of trading Monday.

Last week, Halliburton's larger competitor, Schlumberger Ltd., said its second-quarter profit jumped 47 percent because of an active world market for oil and gas, despite weakness in Canada.

Halliburton, once led by Vice President Dick Cheney, split from KBR, the military contractor and engineering company, in April. Halliburton has said the separation allows it to focus solely on providing expertise, services and equipment to companies working in the global oilfield.

Halliburton chairman and chief executive Dave Lesar said revenue rose 14 percent in the Eastern Hemisphere in the quarter, and income margins rose to nearly 22 percent.

The company announced in March it would split its corporate headquarters between Houston and Dubai, where Lesar will work, placing him nearer to important markets in the Middle East and Asia.

"Our commitment to invest in high-growth Eastern Hemisphere markets is evident in our results," Lesar said in a statement.

Halliburton continues to grow its portfolio of work in that part of the world. Last week the company said it's been awarded a five-year, $200 million contract to provide completion products and services to a group of energy companies operating in Malaysia.

Like Schlumberger, Halliburton said its second-quarter results were hurt by a significant decline in Canadian business.

The company said operating income for its drilling and formation evaluation division was $235 million in the quarter, up 21 percent from a year ago.

For the first six months of the year, Halliburton said its net income amounted to $2.1 billion, or $2.12 a share, up from $1.1 billion, or $1.01 a share. Revenue rose to $7.2 billion from $6 billion.

North American Union -- connecting the dots

My previous article on this website explains in detail the lead up to the North American Union under the pretense of the Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP) and the cleverly disguised methods the governments of Mexico, Canada and the United States have used and will continue to use to change the face and the future of our North American continent.

The upcoming, so-called SPP Conference in Montebello, Quebec from August 20-21 will bring the leaders of the three countries together to ‘ratify’ the SPP, about which their respective citizens know almost nothing. This is all part of a carefully laid out plan, and is no accident. Our government leaders are not at all interested in discussing this issue with the people who elected them. Democracy with a different twist.

The media is complicit in this fascist act by government in collusion with the corporate multinationals, and have either refused to publish anything relevant, or have glossed over the entire issue in true lapdog fashion.

For further background information of the effects on Canada because of the impending North American Union, you can do no better than to read Maude Barlow’s “Too Close for Comfort” wherein Ms Barlow provides painstaking and shocking facts into the economic pillage that will affect all citizens except the wealthiest of the elite.

The purpose of this article is to analyze what else is going on in our countries right now, and then to determine what relationship this activity has with the NAU. I am stating up front that these arguments will be conjectural but need to be addressed.

Decline of U.S. economy

There’s no shortage of articles on the Internet explaining the ‘life-support’ system that the U.S. economy is on. The Washington Post referred to the upcoming bust earlier this month. Stock prices and company valuations are set to take a fall and government may have to raise taxes. Interest rates are starting to rise, and the staggering debt-financed consumption in the U.S. will lead to massive defaults on mortgages and a huge ‘asset grab’ by the rich. China and Middle East oil magnates, who will not permit interest rates to come down, are propping up the United States.

Predictions vary but we may start seeing major monetary shocks by December 2007, but more likely in 2008.

American dollar = Canadian dollar = 10 pesos

The Canadian dollar this week hit a thirty-year high and traded at $.96 American. It is expected to achieve parity with the American dollar this year. This will mean that both the American and Canadian dollar will trade for somewhere around 10 Mexican pesos.

I find this sudden parity of currencies to be extremely coincidental since one of the tenets of the North American Union will be a new currency. This is not speculation. It is part of the SPP agreement that will assuredly be ratified in Montebello next month. So, with the currencies of the three countries now closely aligned, it will be a lot easier to introduce a new North American currency, the AMERO!

United States immigration crisis

There are an estimated 15 to 20 million illegal immigrants, mostly from Mexico, living in the United States. The administration of George W. Bush has deliberately allowed this to happen and is now doing a tap dance to stall any immediate action to resolve this huge problem.

The point is, if you knew we were heading into a North American Union in 2010, to which Bush is a proponent, why would this worry you?

All he needs to do is stall until 2009, and let the new president stall for another year. By 2010, it will all be academic since the ‘illegals’ will become ‘legal’ overnight. In the European Union the countries are virtually borderless. People travel from France to Spain just like people travel from Ontario to Quebec or from Vermont to New Hampshire. The borders will disappear overnight. The illegal immigration problem will disappear as well.

Passport issue

A prior Global Research article deals with the passport issue between Canada and the United States. The requirements between the two countries keep changing, and people are very confused. Now the idea of a ‘smart card’ has surfaced and is currently be ‘tested.’

My sense is that, as with the imminent Amero currency, officials are stalling because there will be new requirements, or perhaps no requirements, since we will all become part of one North American Union, and would only require a passport when we leave or enter that union.

Conclusion

Other articles on this subject suggest that the general public will resist such huge changes, having had no input, information or rebuttal to the whole idea of a North American Union. By now, we should all understand that we are part of a fascist state since we are being denied ANY opportunities for democratic participation into what amounts to the most abrupt, fraudulent and pervasive change in our governance since Confederation.

The question is: how will the elite, the corporate rulers and the government leaders ‘sell’ this bill of goods to the electorate?

Traditionally, instilling a climate of fear and using the tried and true ‘problem-reaction-solution’ method achieves this.

Whether it be a thoughtful, well planned and executed economic crash, or whether some tragic and unforeseen ‘event’ happens, a frightened population will always react to the problem and demand a solution from its government.

And lo and behold, the government will just happen to have a solution in its back pocket, something that has been in the making since former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney signed the Free Trade Agreement in Canada in 1984. Since 1984 our governments have been working towards one final goal.

Welcome to 2010. Welcome to the North American Union.

Airports Warned of 'Dry Run' Attacks

Airport security officers around the nation have been alerted by federal officials to look out for terrorists practicing to carry explosive components onto aircraft, based on four curious seizures at airports since last September.

The unclassified alert was distributed on July 20 by the Transportation Security Administration to federal air marshals, its own transportation security officers and other law enforcement agencies.

The seizures at airports in San Diego, Milwaukee, Houston and Baltimore included "wires, switches, pipes or tubes, cell phone components and dense clay-like substances," including block cheese, the bulletin said. "The unusual nature and increase in number of these improvised items raise concern."

Security officers were urged to keep an eye out for "ordinary items that look like improvised explosive device components."

The 13-paragraph bulletin was posted on the Internet by NBC Nightly News, which first reported the story.

A federal official familiar with the document confirmed the authenticity of the NBC posting but declined to be identified by name because it has not been officially released.

"There is no credible, specific threat here," TSA spokeswoman Ellen Howe said Tuesday. "Don't panic. We do these things all the time."

Homeland Security spokesman Russ Knocke described the notice as the latest copy of a routine informational bulletin for TSA workers, airport employees and law enforcement officials.

A statement posted late Tuesday by the TSA on its Web site confirmed that "a routine TSA intelligence bulletin relating to suspicious incidents at U.S. airports" had leaked to news organizations. The statement added, "During the past six months TSA has produced more than 90 unclassified bulletins of this nature on a wide variety of security-related subjects."

The bulletin said the a joint FBI-Homeland Security Department assessment found that terrorists have conducted probes, dry runs and dress rehearsals in advance of previous attacks.

It cited various types of rehearsals conducted by terrorists before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon; the July 7, 2005, London subway bombings; the Aug. 2, 2006, London-based plot to blow up trans-Atlantic flights using liquid explosives and the 1994 Bojinka plot in the Philippines to blow up multiple airliners over the Pacific Ocean.

The bulletin said the passengers carrying the suspicious items seized since September included men and women and that initial investigation had not linked them with criminal or terrorist organizations. But it added that most of their explanations for carrying the items were suspicious and some were still under investigation.

The four seizures were described this way:

San Diego, July 7. A U.S. person either a citizen or a foreigner legally here checked baggage containing two ice packs covered in duct tape. The ice packs had clay inside them rather than the normal blue gel.

Milwaukee, June 4. A U.S. person's carryon baggage contained wire coil wrapped around a possible initiator, an electrical switch, batteries, three tubes and two blocks of cheese. The bulletin said block cheese has a consistency similar to some explosives.

Houston, Nov. 8, 2006. A U.S. person's checked baggage contained a plastic bag with a 9-volt battery, wires, a block of brown clay-like minerals and pipes.

Baltimore, Sept. 16, 2006. A couple's checked baggage contained a plastic bag with a block of processed cheese taped to another plastic bag holding a cellular phone charger.

Americans don’t believe in revolution anymore. It has become a meaningless event in the distant past. But we need a revolution and we need it now. We need to remove the present administration and restore the people’s confidence in government.

The Bush administration is not a government at all. We all know that. It is a crime family—an oligarchy of racketeers. They have no moral authority, no legitimacy, no right to govern. They’re criminals.

Who doesn’t know this?

And, yet, our congressmen and senators refuse to do their jobs. They’ve "taken impeachment off the table". They have agreed that Bush is above the law. Fine. Then we’ll have to persuade them that they’re wrong or find another way. But Bush has to go. How else can we re-establish democracy in America? How else can we reinstate the legitimate power of congress?

Every day we read about some new attack on our freedom. Every day our constitution is further trashed. This week Bush banned public demonstrations against the war. Last month he issued an executive order that makes himself dictator if another terrorist attack takes place inside the US. The month before that the Congress passed a law that makes it easier for Bush to declare martial law and militarize the country.

We’re not asleep. We know what’s going on. We know they won’t stop until someone stops them. Why would they? They love power.

Look at Iraq. The millions of protestors in the streets had absolutely no effect. The congress had no effect. World opinion had no effect. The United Nations had no effect.

So what happened?

They were stopped in Iraq by men with guns. End of story.

Will it be different at home? I hope so, but who knows?

Leftists, liberals and Libertarians are great at pointing out the details of Bush’s attack on the Bill of Rights---but to what end? For more recriminations and hand-wringing?

We don't need that. We know the problem and we know the solution---Bush must go.

I could be wrong, but I think that revolution is coming---and it’s coming sooner than you think. The American people have been hoodwinked and intimidated for a long time, but we’re reaching a tipping point where public outrage will overpower fear. And that’s what revolution is---organized rage directed at the government. That’s why they want to keep us apart, and spy on us, and follow our every movement. They want absolute power. It’s their dream. It is the dream of evil men everywhere. But it will fail---because everything they’ve tried so far has failed. And because the culture of freedom is stronger than the cynical schemes of demagogues.

We need to see we’re not alone. We need to understand that 70% of the American people feel just like us. They’re mad. Mad at the war, mad at congress, mad at Bush. And we need to stay mad---mad as hell until things change. And they’ll only change if we work together.

But first we have to get mad.

George Bush's Continuing War on the First Amendment

On July 17, George Bush issued another of his many presidential "one-man" decrees titled "Executive Order: Blocking Property of Certain Persons Who Threaten Stabilization Efforts in Iraq." More than any other chief executive in the nation's history, this President abuses this practice egregiously as another example of his contempt for the law.

Economist and journalist Ferdinand Lundberg (1905 - 1995) wrote in his extremely important and revealing book "Cracks in the Constitution:" The US Constitution "nowhere implicitly or explicitly gives a President (the) power (to make) new law" by issuing "one-man, often far-reaching" executive order decrees. However, Lundberg explains "the President in the American constitutional system is very much a de facto king....(he is) by far the most powerful formally constituted political officer on earth." He has "vast power (and) stands in a position midway between a collective executive (like the British system) and an absolute dictator." Lundberg wrote those words over 27 years ago when George Bush was busy making millions (the result of friendly bailouts) from successive oil business ventures that flopped.

George Bush's family connections delivered for him in business, in spite of his ineptitude, and finally gave him the grand prize of the presidency he exploited fully ever since. For him and those around him, the law is just an artifact to be used, abused or ignored at his pleasure. He earlier usurped "Unitary Executive" power to claim the law is what he says it is and in six and half years in office issued more signing statements (over 800) than all past presidents combined. The result is he expanded presidential power (already immense as Lundberg explained) at the expense of the other two branches by shifting it dangerously toward unlimited executive authority, otherwise known as tyranny.

The Constitution has no provisions for "Unitary Executive" power or the right of the chief executive to issue signing statements that hasn't deterred this President from doing as he pleases. There's also no authorization for issuing Executive Orders, as just noted, beyond the following vague language Lundberg explained constitutes the "essence of presidential power....in a single sentence."

Specifically, Article II, section 1 reads: "The executive power shall be vested in a President of the United States of America." That simple statement, easily passed over and misunderstood, means the near-limitless power of this office "is concentrated in the hands of one man." Article II, section 3 then almost nonchalantly adds: "The President shall take care that the laws be faithfully executed" without saying Presidents are virtually empowered to make laws as well as execute them even though nothing in the Constitution specifically permits this practice.

George Bush takes full advantage within and outside the law. His July 17 Executive Order is another case in point, but a particularly egregious and dangerous one. It starts off: The President's power stems from "the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America" as well as the International Emergency Economic Powers Act he invokes as well. The order then continues:

-- "....due to the unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States posed by acts of violence threatening the peace and stability of Iraq and undermining efforts to promote economic reconstruction and political reform in Iraq and to provide humanitarian assistance to the Iraqi people," George Bush usurped authority to criminalize the anti-war movement, make the First Amendment right to protest it illegal, and give himself the right to seize the assets of persons violating this order.

In a message to Congress on the same date, George Bush then stated:

-- "....I hereby report that I have issued an Executive Order blocking property of persons determined to have committed, or to pose a significant risk of committing, an act or acts of violence that have the purpose or effect of threatening the peace or stability of Iraq or the Government of Iraq or undermining efforts to promote economic reconstruction and political reform in Iraq or to provide humanitarian assistance to the Iraqi people."

In effect, George Bush, on his say alone and in violation of the Constitution, criminalized dissent July 17, 2007. By so doing, he shifted the nation one step closer to full-blown tyranny with other tightening measures sure to follow this one. The dominant media reported virtually nothing about this nor will they explain or voice concern when law-abiding Americans are arrested and punished for protesting a criminal administration's illegal foreign wars. Instead, a full-court press publicly-aired effort is underway to justify them that provides clues for what may lie ahead.

WASHINGTON -- Oregonians called Peter DeFazio's office, worried there was a conspiracy buried in the classified portion of a White House plan for operating the government after a terrorist attack.

As a member of the U.S. House on the Homeland Security Committee, DeFazio, D-Ore., is permitted to enter a secure "bubble-room" in the Capitol and examine classified material. So he asked the White House to see the secret documents.

On Wednesday, DeFazio got his answer: DENIED

"I just can't believe they're going to deny a member of Congress the right of reviewing how they plan to conduct the government of the United States after a significant terrorist attack," DeFazio says.

Homeland Security Committee staffers told his office that the White House initially approved his request, but it was later quashed. DeFazio doesn't know who did it or why.

"We're talking about the continuity of the government of the United States of America," DeFazio says. "I would think that would be relevant to any member of Congress, let alone a member of the Homeland Security Committee."

Bush administration spokesman Trey Bohn declined to say why DeFazio was denied access: "We do not comment through the press on the process that this access entails. It is important to keep in mind that much of the information related to the continuity of government is highly sensitive."

Norm Ornstein, a legal scholar who studies government continuity at the conservative American Enterprise Institute, said he "cannot think of one good reason" to deny access to a member of Congress who serves on the Homeland Security Committee.

"I find it inexplicable and probably reflective of the usual, knee-jerk overextension of executive power that we see from this White House," Ornstein said.

This is the first time DeFazio has been denied access to documents. DeFazio has asked Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., to help him access the documents.

"Maybe the people who think there's a conspiracy out there are right," DeFazio said.

My contact reported to me today by email that Chertoff spoke about more "gut feelings" that he (Chertoff) has about a simultaneous Los Angeles / San Francisco dirty bomb attack that "our enemy is surely planning".

I've had a hunch for a long time that the next false flag attack will be on the West Coast, so that it seems that the whole country is under attack, and not just the East Coast.

We were down at Ogden Point tonight from 4:30 to 6:40pm. As expected, there were 3 ships that came in and dozens of buses passing by.

We waved and smiled to all the buses and had a mixed bag of reactions. Many waves, a few thumbs down and only one finger. The majority did nothing of course but at least the majority of those that reacted were on our side.

The number of people walking was light because of the rain and we handed out about 40 brochures and few DVDs.

We had a visit from two of the local police officers. They were very nice and asked us to move our sign so it wouldn't block the sidewalk which we did. The female officer I spoke to has a father who is a 9/11 truther (I guess you couldn't ask for better luck). She didn't disagree with the message but said she thought delivering it to people as they entered the city might not be the best way to do it and suggested down by the legislature. We gave the officers a brochure and 2 Terror Storm DVDs.

Then came the intimidation tactics when we were asked for our names. The male officer asked me, in a sweet and matter of fact tone, if I'd mind giving him my name to which I answered yes I would. He said OK and didn't press the issue but continued to write in his note pad, undoubtedly entering my physical description. Too bad he didn't press the issue so I could have sued him for violating my rights. I think the next time this happens I am going to give the police a short lecture and advise them if they ever ask me again or anyone I'm with I will sue them personally.

We talked with them for a while and I talked about the trends I see in the legislation since 9/11 and how if that trend continues they are going to be asked to do some awful things. He didn't say much but was nodding while I was saying it. Hmmm.

And about half way through it was funny when 2 women volunteers dressed in Victorian costumes showed up to greet the people at the same location. They were very disturbed by us.

All in all interesting and instructive as always.

Dr. Lawrence Britt has examined the fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia) and several Latin American regimes. Britt found 14 defining characteristics common to each:

1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.

3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.

4. Supremacy of the Military - Even when there are widespread
domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.

5. Rampant Sexism - The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution.

6. Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.

7. Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

8. Religion and Government are Intertwined - Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.

9. Corporate Power is Protected - The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.

10. Labor Power is Suppressed - Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.

11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts - Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked.

12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment - Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.

13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.

14. Fraudulent Elections - Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

My wake-up call: Watch for another 9/11-WMD experience

This is a wake-up call that we are about to experience another 9/11-WMD experience.

The wake-up call is unlikely to be effective, because the American attitude toward government changed fundamentally 70-odd years ago. Prior to the 1930s, Americans were suspicious of government, but with the arrival of the Great Depression, Tojo, and Hitler, President Franklin D. Roosevelt convinced Americans that government existed to protect them from rapacious private interests and foreign threats. Today, Americans are more likely to give the benefit of the doubt to government than they are to family members, friends, and those who would warn them about the government’s protection.

Intelligent observers are puzzled that President Bush is persisting in a futile and unpopular war at the obvious expense of his party’s electoral chances in 2008.

In the July 18 Los Angeles Times (“Bush the Albatross”), Ronald Brownstein reminds us that Bush’s behavior is disastrous for his political party. Unpopular presidents “have consistently undercut their party in the next election.” Brownstein reports that “88 percent of voters who disapproved of the retiring president’s job performance voted against his party’s nominee in past elections. . . . On average, 80 percent of voters who disapproved of a president’s performance have voted against his party’s candidates even in House races since 1986.”

Brownstein notes that with Bush’s dismal approval rating, this implies a total wipeout of the Republicans in 2008.

A number of pundits have concluded that the reason the Democrats have not brought a halt to Bush’s follies is that they expect Bush’s unpopular policies to provide them with a landslide victory next year.

There is a problem with this reasoning. It assumes that Cheney, Rove, and the Republicans are ignorant of these facts or are content for the Republican Party to be destroyed after Bush has his warmonger-police state fling. “After me, the deluge.”

Isn’t it more likely that Cheney and Rove have in mind events that will, once again, rally the people behind President Bush and the Republican Party, that is fighting the “war on terror” that the Democrats “want to lose”?

Such events could take a number of forms. As even diehard Republican Patrick J. Buchanan observed on July 17, with three US aircraft carrier battle groups in congested waters off Iran, another Tonkin Gulf incident could easily be engineered to set us at war with Iran.

If Bush’s intentions were merely to bomb a nuclear reactor, he would not need three carrier strike forces.

Lately, the administration has switched to blaming Iran for the war in Iraq. The US Senate has already lined up behind the latest lie with a 97-0 vote to condemn Iran.

Alternatively, false flag “terrorist” strikes could be orchestrated in the US. The Bush administration has already infiltrated some dissident groups and encouraged them to participate in terrorist talk, for which they were arrested. It is possible that the administration could provoke some groups to actual acts of violence.

Many Americans dismiss suspicion of their government as treasonous, and most believe conspiracy to be impossible “because someone would talk.”

There is no basis in any known fact for this opinion.

According to polls, 36 percent of the American people disbelieve the 9/11 Commission Report. Despite this lack of confidence, and despite the numerous omissions and errors in the report, it has proven impossible to have an independent investigation of 9/11 or to examine the official explanation in public debate. Even experts and people with a lifetime of distinguished public service are dismissed as “conspiracy theorists,” “kooks,” and “traitors” if they question the official explanation of 9/11. This despite the fact that war in the Middle East, a long-planned goal of Bush’s neoconservative administration, could not have been initiated without a “new Pearl Harbor.”

That powerfully constructed steel buildings could suddenly turn to dust because they were struck by two flimsy aluminum airliners and experienced small fires on a few floors that burned for a short time appears unexceptionable to a majority of Americans.

Moreover, people have talked. Hundreds of them. Firefighters, police, janitors, and others report hearing and experiencing a series of explosions in upper floors and massive explosions in the underground basements. This eyewitness testimony was kept under wraps for three or more years until the official explanation had taken root. The oral histories were finally forced loose by Freedom Of Information Act suits. The eyewitness reports of explosion after explosion had no effect.

Larry Silverstein, who received billions of dollars in insurance payments for the destroyed buildings, talked. He said on public television that the order was given “to pull” building 7. His stunning admission had no effect.

The Bush administration is preparing us for more terrorist attacks. The latest intelligence report says that Al Qaeda has regrouped, rebuilt, and has the ability to come after us again. "Al Qaeda will intensify its efforts to put operatives here," says the report.

Security operatives, such as Michael Chertoff, and various instruments of administration propaganda have warned that we will be attacked before next year’s election. Chertoff is not a person who wants to be known as Chicken Little for telling us that the sky is falling.

Bush has the Republican Party in such a mess that it cannot survive without another 9/11. Whether authentic or orchestrated, an attack will activate Bush’s new executive orders, which create a dictatorial police state in event of “national emergency.” [See here.]

The UK government is hand-in-glove with the Bush administration and will provide cover or verification for whatever claim the Bush administration advances. So will the right-wing governments in Canada and Australia. That takes care of the English-speaking world from which contrary explanations might reach the American people.

It is possible that Bush is now too weak, that suspicion is too great, and that there is too much internal resistance in the federal bureaucracy and military for any such scenario. If so, then my prediction prior to the invasion that the US invasion of Iraq will destroy Bush, the Republican Party, and the conservative movement will be proven true. The Democrats’ strategy of doing nothing except making sure Bush gets his way will produce the landslide that they expect.

However, this assumes that Cheney, Rove, and their neoconservative allies have lost their cunning and their manipulative skills. It is difficult to imagine a more dangerous assumption for Democrats and the American people to make.

Once the US experiences new attacks, Bush will be vindicated. His voice will be confident as he speaks to the nation:

“My administration knew that there would be more attacks from these terrorists who hate us and our way of life and are determined to destroy every one of us. If only more of you had believed me and supported my war on terror these new attacks would not have happened. Our security efforts were impaired by the Democrats’ determined attempts to surrender to the terrorists by forcing our withdrawal from Iraq and by civil libertarian assaults on our necessary security measures. If only more Americans had trusted their government, this would not have happened.”

And so on. Anyone should be able to write the script.

Not surprisingly, this offer has been on the table since 2001, but no one has been willing to take that toxic chemical cocktail -- except for the children who innocently go in for their routine vaccinations.
