I made this video for Chika and thought I would post it here too! This is a circus start that Chika saw me do in one of my performances. It's actually much easier than it looks! Sharna also did a cool circus start tutorial (link in the video description)!

Re: circus start tutorial
Tue, November 10, 2009 - 9:09 PMGood explanation. I call this an assisted circus start because you are asstising the hoop as it rises. I don't know if you've tried it but Rhythmic Gymnasts do a similar move that is unassisted where they push the right hand, the hand with the hoop, against the belly but they don't reach over to grab it with the left hand. They just give it a flat, vertical push, like closing a door, then let go while lifting the opposite leg and let the cintrifugal force of the push make the hoop wrap first around the low front (vertically), then the mid back (again, vertically) and then the high front (once more, vertially) so that it lands back in the hand which is waiting for it above the head. If you haven't tried it, give it a try. It can be tough to break the habit of doing a hand off on the belly so you really have to concentrate on taking your hand high above the head and locking the elbow, waiting for the hoop to get there, but if you stand straight and lift the leg opposite the delivering hand, it will wrap, wrap, wrap and then catch some air before landing right in your hand. (The hardest part is not allowing yourself to grab for the hoop as it works it's way up.) Give it a try! I bet you'll like it. It looks super impressive. Hence the reason rhythmic gymnasts often use it to start their routines. -

Re: circus start tutorial
Tue, November 10, 2009 - 9:35 PMIt's kind of like this move (the up one) except instead of catching it as it circles from behind you (on the second circle), you let it do one more circle and fly off of you to catch it in the air in your opposite hand. www.youtube.com/watch
(This is another one of those names like I'm like, "Where did that come from? An escaltor doesn't go in a circle!?!)
