Tue, November 10, 2009 - 9:17 PMIs this an isolation? I though an isolation was where the hoop remained fixed in space? It's a cool move, in both directions, but I'm not sure the hoop is isolated. Doesn't that mean its axis remains cnetered? This seems to move the axis to the shoulder instead of the center of the hoop. I could be wrong theough. I was expecting to see a hoop locked behind your back like you were driving a stearing wheel behind you. Again, I could be wrong. -

Tue, November 10, 2009 - 9:21 PMI wondered about that too. I guess if you can stand still enough, turning on the toe or heel so that you go 180-degrees from front to back... Still, I think the axis is the shoulder instead of the center of the hoop. Maybe with a bigger hoop it would look fixed in space? -

Wed, November 11, 2009 - 1:09 PMThat was my first time doing it with a small hoop so it doesn't look quite as isolated as it should I have no idea what possessed me to grab that particular hoop as I haven't used it since the day I got it at a workshop two years ago. I think my running out the door logic was that the red would show up well against the grass!
With a regular sized hoop, you want your arm to go back as high as possible so that when you begin the isolation, the hoop stays in the same spot. With this smaller hoop, I brought it down lower (without realizing it) so that it was in front of my face. The isolation should start when your hoop is behind you at the 9 o'clock and continue up to 12 o'clock as you turn your body.
You can see Chika doing the same trick here (the first time starting at 0:07 and again at 1:52) with a regular sized hoop and it is much more isolated in movement:

Honestly, I didn't know what to call this trick. We asked Brecken if she had a name for it and she said no. When megzz asked me about it, she called it a back isolation so I have been referring it to the same way, inaccurate a description as it may be. I'm open to any suggestions for a better name! -

Wed, November 11, 2009 - 1:46 PMI do this move. I've just never named it. Seeing it with a bigger hoop I thik I would call it a behind the back backward infinity (which is the poi name for that whole hand move, which can be done forward or backward) into an isolation. I can see how iwth a big enough hoop, it could stay isolated the whole time. Isolations can be very tricky to keep suspended in space depending on the size hoop you use. Most times small is easier. That's why Poki and Justin often use small hoops. But because we like to hooop on our waists, we more often use largish hoops and this is a move that's easier to preserve a large isolation with I think, since you're following it along for the ride.
I like naming moves. I only name them what they physically are, which is what poi spinners do, but it really helps me figure them out too to break them down that way ... even though sometimes the names are really long! It also helps me teach them since the name physically describes what you're doing. It can be a challenge sometimes though, like a puzzle.
