barrel roll help

I'm getting a little frustrated over not getting the hang of the barrel roll either around the waist or on the shoulders.
I've been thru a hooping class where the subject was taught, looked at Christabel showing it on the dvd, I've watched umpteen videos of people doing it to perfection or learning how to do it, I've searched for tutorials, I received some special instruction one-on-one. Still can't do it.

My problem is that I can go 'round, but the hoop comes with me instead of staying in one place. I can do it a little bit when I go against the current, but can't keep that up for very long.

So, instead of getting needlessly frustrated, I thought I'd ask for some help. I noticed the question was asked before in the tutorial section but it doesn't seem like anyone has posted any video or anything that has helped me very much.

Hope someone can help out.

Thanks,
Ingrid

I don't have a video but I just had to chime in and say, the hoop is supposed to come with you, not stay in place. It can't touch your body and stay in place at the same time. You are the point of contact. The hoop must move with you. Instead, you stall it out against you and turn while it's in a stall. Try holding the hoop against your chest and turning, then release your hand and see if that helps. If I can find some time I'll try to make a tutorial. It could be a while though. Perhaps someone else will come up with one sooner.

      Hi Caroleena,

Thanks for your response. I think I wasn't clear enough in explaining my experience. What I meant to say is that of course the hoop doesn't stay in place. I mean that the hoop changes to the opposite direction, and doesn't stall. Actually, it goes all over the place :)

I'll try the hand thing that you explained. Thanks for your help.

Hi! I'm one of the people who requested the barrel roll tutorial in the request thread. Anyway, like you said there wasn't much of a response so I've been doing my best to figure the dynamics out for myself. It hasn't been easy. At this point, I feel like I'm making a little progress but there is definitely an aspect of it that I can't fully wrap my head around. Interestingly enough, I don't really feel like I stall the whole time I'm doing a roll (may be part of my problem). There may be a half second stall when I start to turn but then I do this weird thing with my upper arms that causes the hoop to keep momentum. I can do 1 or 2 rolls at a time. I don't understand how to keep rolling. I would be willing to post a video of my wonky, ungraceful attempt at barrel rolls if someone would be willing to critique it. Maybe that would help a bit if know one wants to do an actual tutorial. I don't know--I'm grasping at straws in an effort to figure it out. :)

Thanks for adding to the thread once again. I worked so hard at it the other day that my middle back is still hurting after 4 days, and I'm having to take it easy.

There is probably a body part that I'm not focussing on that is crucial to the move, something others my do right naturally and are not aware of, and therefore do not explain. I'll try and watch videos with a different focus. It may be something like a magic trick, where your attention is focussed on something else, so you miss the logic of the trick.

Hope someone will chime in with useful hints.

Ya. I would love a class or video from an experienced hooper.. It seems like I have lost some of the smoothness that I had previously felt when rolling. I am probably overthinking it.
How far bent over should we be?

      Hi everybody!

I can definitely help with the barrel roll!

First off there are a couple different variations to the barrel roll. The first one most people learn is on the waist and is a step turn will you continue pushing the hoop the whole time around. The second variation is more of an angled spin where you are turning with the hoop the whole time. You can feel the difference while just hooping on the waist. first step around in a circle and feel the constant push, then spin a circle, looking for a bit of the feeling of a "stall".

For both variations you have to remember that your body needs to stay perpendicular to the plane of the hoop the whole time. ie, if you are less flexible in your back you may not be able to do a really steep angle, which can get tricky because most people can bend further forward than back, creating a difference in body angle that will throw the hoop off it's axis.

Try picking a point on the wall or a tree to have a visual spot for your upwards push. As you begin your turn you can think of continuing to push towards this spot all the way around. start slowly so you can really feel you push point shift through you body WHILE you are maintaing a steady push towards this spot.

Really, the best way to help you guys is for you to post a video of yourself attempting to do the barrel roll and I can tell you if i can see what you need to do different! If you could film yourself in different angles that would help as well. Filming some tutorials has been on my list anyway so I will use this to kick start my hoopin ass and film a barrel roll tutorial as soon as i can! Any tips on compressing video through imovie?

okey dokey I figured it out! Here is my barrel roll tutorial:

there are a few more technical things that have to do with angles that are not in there but may help. I am doing an angles troubleshoot next so if you are still having trouble this may help as well!
