I make some mistakes and my rolls are not as smooth as I'd like but doing it and framing it in my mind and articulating it all at the same time is hard! Do as I say, not as I do. Your hoop should not catch air. If it does, you're not relaxed enough. Breathe. Or you're releasing too early. Hang on to the hoop til it touches your forearm, then gently raise your forearm to propel it across the chest.
I am flexiable and a can somewhat to the move on my knees but ,when I do it standing up I just pass from one elbow to the other . when I watch everyone else , the hoop seems to be continually spinning from one elbow to the next. Anah does this beautifully( of course) and so do a lot of other hoopers .

How do you do a barrel roll while the hoop is on one shoulder in the vertical plane? I can do vertical plane one shoulder hooping and switch shoulders but this whole barrel roll one shoulder attempt is not working for me. How do I do this?! Even a textual explanation may help but if someone can just post a video of themselves or someone else doing it, I think I could figure it out from there. Or a tutorial. My music is too loud. I can hardly hear my ears are so stopped up so I didn't realize it til later. And there are a few other technical failured and mishaps and my moves are not as smooth as they could be either (my muscles are still so sore and stiff!) but it's done and my friends on YouTube seem to like it okay so I decided to share it here after all. I'll do a better job next time.

This move is based on a poi move called a Tuck Turn. I include a Tuck Turn with Hoop briefly but my camera battery died in the middle of the description and then I lost my place so, if you have trouble getting that particular iteration, I can do another video. Hopefully the Tuck Toss and Tuck Toss with Turn make sense though.

I really like SaFire's tutorials and since I haven't done anything like this before, I modeled my video after hers! (thanks) Although I fear my words won't be as good... but hopefully it is enough that anyone interested could give it a try! I was nervous so I stumble over words, sorry! But it is a fun move and since I have been learning moves from all y'all I thought I would try and contribute something back!

Ive tried different amounts and they always seem to be to heavy or too light. I was just wondering if anyone has advice for me.

I feel like for different tricks and moves the different weights help alot. the lighter hoop i can do more arm and isolation moves and then the heavier i can do alot of body, leg and chest hooping better.

does anyone have a good weight or water amount to put in there that works good for everything. or that works good for you?

and i use 1'' tubing for my hoops. are there any differences if you use 3/4" tubing.

Also what is a good size to make a hoop?

if you guys could give me some hooping advice i would really apriciate it :)

I've been thru a hooping class where the subject was taught, looked at Christabel showing it on the dvd, I've watched umpteen videos of people doing it to perfection or learning how to do it, I've searched for tutorials, I received some special instruction one-on-one. Still can't do it.

My problem is that I can go 'round, but the hoop comes with me instead of staying in one place. I can do it a little bit when I go against the current, but can't keep that up for very long.
So, instead of getting needlessly frustrated, I thought I'd ask for some help. I noticed the question was asked before in the tutorial section but it doesn't seem like anyone has posted any video or anything that has helped me very much.

I can chest hoop no problem at all, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to get the hoop from the waist up to the chest without any arms inside the hoop...when you raise your arms above your head and sort of wriggle the hoop up from the waist...everytime I try, it ends up going down instead of up. ....lol and since that's the case, logic would have me think if I do the opposite of what I'm doing, it should go up, but nothing seems to be working!

I did see one video tutorial a while back (if memory serves, it was from the expert village site) but for some reason nothing clicked with their explanation/demonstration. Can anyone give any advice on how the body needs to move in order to get the hoop to go up to the chest like that? I appreciate any insight!!

I have asked this before but no one has responded, and maybe it's asking too much. But I wanted to ask again because I LOVE hooping and my sight is going rapidly, so I would like some help while I can still see so I can continue to get better.

What I need are close up, slow moving videos WITHOUT the hoop (just the body part doing the movement) of each of the following (can be one movement per video or whatever):

hip hooping
leg hooping
moving the hoop up from legs to waist

I know this probably sounds weird to most people, but I actually have a hard time hooping and NOT sustained spinning - for some reason my body just wants to spin. Anyway, I have gotten a lot of questions on my videos asking how I manage to keep spinning so I thought I would create a tutorial to help. Hope you like it!

Oh, and these are just the basics on how to keep from getting dizzy - if people think it would be helpful to make a tutorial on moves that are kind of specific to spinning I am happy to do so - just let me know!

Btw I am a bit "tribe retarded" as I like to call it (I just can't seem to figure it out - I get lost in the wealth of info here) so I apologize in advance if I don't respond to a comment or question or something. It is probably because I can't even seem to figure out where my own posts are...! Anyway - that's another problem for another day :)

I touch on a few things but I highlight one piece of footwork and one piece of handwork specifically. I give several variations of both. I tried to make this as short as possible but it was a lot to cover and I didn't want to make multiple videos so what we have here is one 14-minute video. I had to post it on Vimeo since Youtube won't take anything over 10 minutes. More and more I'm thinking I might move all my stuff to Vimeo. Clearer picture, longer movies, no removing videos because of the music I'm playing ... what's not to love?

The light is terrible in this. Without my overhead light, it's too dark, with it, it looks like I am constantly having a great idea (ie a lightbulb going off over my head).

Go and look at one of them, you'll see an option to "Edit video annotations" under "Video owner options". You can customize the size and vertical position, and the time each annotation lasts. ("Help" is easily available from the place where you're doing it.) For tutorials, I think this is pretty spiffy!

I tried it out on my Counter-Rotation video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mff41zpOzoo, and also on my Behind-the-back pass, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtJpSJLleRM

This is a VERY old video and as such is not on YouTube, but rather my personal site: http://www.pyrokinetika.com/Media/oneshoulder.wmv . It requires Windows Media Viewer to see it. The best way to work on the not-matrix is to get really comfortable with one-shoulder hooping, and these variations will help with that. Hope this helps!

Hi all,

It seems we've got a lot of new members, and that is really, really great! But I would like to remind people to please put their video tutorial REQUESTS in the "Requests" thread. The reason for this is because when you start a new thread with the name of a trick (for example if you label a thead "Beam Me Up") then other people will assume that the thread contains a video tutorial on the Beam Me Up, when in reality it is just a request.

I don't want to be mean or anything, but the purpose of the Video Tutorials page is to keep all the video tutorials together in one, easy-to-find site, so new hoopers don't have to search through pages of performance hooping videos to find the video tutorial they are looking for. By having so many specific request threads, it is making this difficult.

If everyone agrees, I will leave the current request threads open for one week, and then I will delete them and move their content to the requests thread. If the majority prefer to leave it the way it is, please post, and I will do that instead.

Thanks,

It is a new site so there are still a lot of holes, but bare with my as it grows and develops. It will also hold additional information about hooping, including instructions on hoop construction, terminology, and more. I also take requests for what trick to cover in my tutorials so if there is something you've always wanted to learn let me know and we'll break it down.

This is a very basic tutorial for new hoopers about how to walk while you are hooping.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAeZV_Q5Sew

Check out my cat AGAIN! He is in every video! In this one, Icky seems to realize that I'm directing my attention to the camera. He comes up and looks right into the camera at about 6:30. He is such a smart cat. And totally fearless.

I emphasize going front/back, front/back or side/side, side/side a lot. I wish I had commented that soon you will find yourself at a place where you are pushing and pulling in all directions and in varying degrees. You will develop nuance. These ideas just give you a taste of some of the possibilities. You'll discover the places in between, new and different ways to interact with the hoop, to influence the rotation from every side. You will find your center. Just stick with it. It's only a matter of time.

Here are some of the instructions I'd shared in a thread prior to making this video. Perhaps they will help someone also.

Like Glen Campbell sang in Rudolph: "Put one foot in front of the other ... and soon you'll be walking 'cross the floo-oo-oor! Put one foot in front of the other ... and soon you'll be walking out the door!"

To start this process, remember to stand up straight and look forward. Practice lifting one foot and setting it down, lifting the other foot and setting it down. (Look forward, not down.) Practice standing on one leg (which is actually harder than just walking.) Then practice setting one foot out a bit to the right so that you're in a wide stance, then bring the feet back together. Then set the other foot out to the left so you're in a wide stance again. Then bring them back together. Then you're ready to start practicing putting one foot in front, then bringing it back to you, then setting the other foot in front, then bringing it back to you. Do this for a while.

Then do something completely different. Start doing armwork. Hold your arms in prayer position at your chest, then lift them (palms together) above your head, then bring them back to the chest. Then open the right arm out and then return it to the middle. Then open the left arm out and then return it to the middle. While you're working on your arms, forget all about your feet and just walk forward. Keeping your mind above the waist takes a lot of the pressure off. It also helps you not look down. If you're looking down, the hoop is likely to slip down also because you're probably not standing up straight. So look up and think up. Try stepping backwards too. It's all about finding that center.

Then, go outside, get your hoop going and try to take off running across the yard. Seriously. The momentum will keep the hoop going for a while and you will begin to have understandings about how, physiologically, that is happening. Don't be shy. Go for it. What's the worst that could happen?

Good luck. And Happy Hooping!

However, the Requests thread is getting a little bulky with helpful non-video replies. This makes it hard for people who want to look up requests for videos to scroll through.

I hope you don't mind, but I have decided to move non-video help replies to this thread after they have been posted week or two. I think that is the best of both worlds, because we can still give people immediate non-video help, but the requests thread maintains its original purpose.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXN02nmhy0w

Also, here is a text version of my Shoulder Hooping Excersizes handout. This is great practice to get you ready to shoulder hoop! (PS- I all my worksheets, when I say "base" it refers to the move you start out doing.)

Base: Neck Hooping – Put your L arm up and through the hole. Try hooping in this position. The hoop will be on the R side of your neck, and your L arm pit. Now try it with your other arm.

Alternate hooping with your R and L arm through the hole. You can do “The Monkey” by doing one rotation with your R arm up and left one down, and then switch both arms to do one rotation with your L arm up and R down. This is easier while turning with the hoop.

Base: Neck Hooping – Try putting one shoulder up and into the hole and hooping in this position. For CCW hoopers (reverse for CW) if your R shoulder is in the hoop, it will be pushing back against the hoop. If your L shoulder is in the hoop, it will be pushing forward against the hoop.

Attempt to alternate shoulders in the hoop, spending one rotation per shoulder

Base: Neck Hooping – Let the hoop fall so that it is on your shoulders. Attempt to keep the hoop on your shoulders so that it does not fall, and does not work back up to your neck. This is easier done while turning. If you can do it while turning, plant your feet on the ground, and attempt the same exercise while stationary.

Base: Neck Hooping – Lift both arms up and out of the hole, as if you were transitioning to waist hooping. Try to keep the hoop up around your chest as long as possible, before it falls.

Variations

Insert a stall while doing all of the above exercises. You can experiment with stalling at different points in the hoops rotation too!

Challenge yourself to do all the above exercises (except those involving turning!) while kneeling or sitting in a comfortable manner

Practice all the above exercises with your eyes closed. Focus on the feel of the hoop against your body. Next, focus on the muscles you are utilizing.

Just keep trying different things and seeing what works for you. If you have any questions feel free to hit me up and I'll try and offer what advice I can. =)

I think everyone can make a video tutorial. In fact, I think it is the "right thing" to do if you have used other people's tutorials. Shouldn't you give back to the community??.

Even if you are new, you still have valuable information to contribute. Believe it or not, although beginner moves are often DESCRIBED on tribe, most VIDEO tutorials are of more intermediate/advanced moves. That means there is a great big hole with no tutorials for beginner moves, which YOU can help fill. I started posting video tutorials at 9 months of hooping, and if I had posted ones of beginner level moves I probably could have started earlier.

You do not need to be an uber-master of experience to post a video tutorial. You just have to have some knowledge that someone would want, and the ability to think through that knowledge and come up with some coherent ways of explaining it. (as an aside, IMO, you SHOULD have a decent amount of experience to teach classes.)

Think a move is already done??? Think again! It may be done ONCE, but there are MANY ways to teach and learn each move. For example, my Four Point shoulder hooping methodology is just ONE way I teach shoulder hooping. Want to do a video on shoulder hooping? How about show some steps that lead to shoulder hooping (hoop with one arm up, or one shoulder in, etc), How about explaining it another way. (There are lots of different ways, if you need help thinking of one, let me know!)

Here are some beginner level moves that could be good places to start if you are new to tutorial making: Waist hooping, Hand hooping, Stalls, Beginner directional changes, Inserting your hands while waist hooping, Highway Ramp, Neck hooping, Neck <-> Hand transitions, Neck<-> Waist transitions, Vertical hand hooping, Beam me up, and Many More! lol

If you are interested in making a tutorial, but would like some help, let us know!

I can do vertical throws no problem, but can -not- figure out how to keep it horizontal and yet throw it vertically! Can anyone explain this to me?
