Huge influences

topic posted Fri, July 7, 2006 - 7:53 AM by  offlineTom

I was walking around Long beach state campus one night, two guys in an old VW bus were setting up and testing a slide show... they were doing a trial run.
the bus was going to project the slides running on a timer. another car nearby was playing the music, it was really interesting... the photos were (I think) just pictures of urban squalor... I really don't remember the pictures or the music, but the concept amazed me...

this was maybe 15-20 years ago.

other huge influences on me:
OBEY, Robbie Conal, Seth Tobocman (WW3-zine), Ben is Dead (zine), Ron English - Billboard Liberation, soviet propaganda posters...

other influences?

i join the propaganda gang, mostly subversive - soviet, china, cuba, chicano, etc.
plus the harlem rennaisance - aaron douglas is fucking dope
plus even all that postmoderny collage/assemblage stuff that i sometimes kinda hate content wise but thoroughly love form wise
general urban rubble, old punk shit like the self produced album covers of a local band and just the nihilistic might-as-well-fuck-shit-up attitude of then, and the steez of my hip-hopian peers from the days of yore.
    (thats general. i know.)

oh. im a muralist. im supposed to say Siqueiros. he is also quite dope.

how about some pictures in the photo album...

let the rest of us see what you see...

I just put like 30 pictures from Robbie Conal and Seth Tobocman...

Man, I forgot how amazing Seth Tobocman is.. I first got into him though a publication called World War 3, then bought his book "you don't have to fuck people over to survive"
so phenomenal, his works are like ballads and war marches and opearas for the thinking...
