She said in some parts of Turkey, Romania, Russia, and Spain, Romani dancers will sometimes touch their skirts for a certain gesture or flare, but mentioned that there was one tribe she encountered (in Kosovo, I believe, although I may be remembering wrong) where it was considered mahrime to touch the skirt. I'm assuming this has more to do with the tribe than the country. Can someone tell me, for which Rromani groups does this taboo exist?

I inform you that another summer intensif rroma dance workshop will take place in Belgrade, Serbia in august 2008:

***** ANNUAL SERBIAN BALKANIAN RROMA DANCE WORKSHOP *****

Belgrade, August 1st to 7th, 2008

As each year, Simona Jovic will welcome you in her country for a 20 hours rroma and balkanian dance workshop. The workshop will be teached by Simona Jovic, Dobrosav Grocic and live musicians. Join us to learn more about how to dance on the rromani and traditionnal music from Serbia, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Albania, Montenegro and Bosnia. The workshop will be teached in english, french and serbian.

* Dance programme :

Cocek rroma dance from Southern Balkans
The biggest part of this 20 hours serbian workshop will be dedicated to this gracefull and joyfull dance, danced in the rromani communities in Macedonia, Albania, Bulgaria and south of Serbia. Danced by women and men, it remains very oriental with the big turkish influences thanks to the 5 centuries ottoman occupation of that area.

Vranjanska svita (with the tamburine)
Vranjanska svita is a dance and song from Vranje in south of Serbia. It is composed of three parts : first women dance part on the beautifful song "Sano duso" (7/8 rhythme). Second, the men dance called "Tesko oro". And the third part is the women cocek rromani dance danced with the tambourine on the 9/8 very fast rhythme. It is the most oriental of all traditionnal serbian dances and one the most beautifull.

Rromani Oros
Cercle or line dances from south of the Balkans. According to the rhythme, if it's regular or irregular, if it's 7/8 or 9/8, if it's slow or fast, the step of the oro will change. In this workshop will be teached only those danced by the Rroma in their mariages and festivities.

Serbian kolo
Kolo is the synonym for oro, also a cercle or line dance, but this appelation is used in Central Serbia and it is mostly assimilated to the "two bite rhytme kolos" and not the "oriental" ones. Lively and friendly, kolo is the dance of sharing between Gadje and Rroma that will give you the liberty to have fun at any balkanian festivity.
VOICE OF ROMA WISH YOU A HAPPY AND PEACEFUL ROMA DAY!
WE CELEBRATED ROMA DAY ON FRIDAY IT WAS GOOD TO SEE SOME OF YOU THERE.
HERE ARE SOME OF THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITIES ANNOUNCEMENT FOR ROMA DAY.
JULIA
*********************************************************************************************************************
The Roma National Congress
Federation of the Romani Civil and Human Rights Movement

Press release, 8 April 2008 - On the occasion of 8th of April, Roma National Congress would like to join to all Roma worldwide in celebrating the International Roma Day, and to encourage the Romani communities to continue to strive for effective inclusion asking for full Roma participation in all processes in the societies.

Roma are faced with discrimination, segregation, hate speech, substandard living conditions, extreme poverty, illiteracy, high level of unemployment, low level of social and health protection, in SEE countries large number are without personal civil documents. There are numerous international reports from the Council of Europe, UN treaty bodies, and OSCE which have highlighted the appalling conditions of the Roma and the failure of the of the Governments to make substantive improvements in Roma living conditions.

The main challenge for the European institutions should be to improve the lives of millions of Roma in EU, to make influence in the process of solving the situation of Roma refugees and IDP’s. RNC is urging to stop forced expulsion of Roma from Europe. We are further disappointed that although we have international documents concerning Roma in Europe brought by the highest EU institutions, in reality Roma are still on the margins without concrete visible improvement.

Equally there needs to be a European solution to what is a European issue regarding Roma non –territorial minority across Europe, Roma as the largest European minority are European issue.

Roma National Congress (RNC), as Federation of the Romani civil and human rights movement, organization aimed at combating anti-Romani racisms and human rights abuse of Roma. RNC is international organisation with the aim of representing and stimulating the active participation and integration of Romani people on the principles of the modern multiethnic European society.

We call upon national and international authorities to improve rights and lives of Roma in Central and Eastern Europe. RNC invites all European citizens in the 2008 Intercultural Dialogue Year fully to respect Roma entity, their cultural values and contribution. Please follow up the message for Roma unity, as an artistic moment.

Yours sincerely,

I've been trying to get my hands a on a copy of the lyrics for Vlatko Stefanovski's "Gipsy Song." I can find the Macedonian lyrics (which I can't read), but I'd really like the lyrics to the version of the song that's sung in rromanes. Also, if anyone knows who does the lyrics on that track, I'd love to know. His voice is delicious!

EXODUS OF ROMA AND REASONS FOR MIGRATIONS FROM INDIA
written by Bajram HALITI-India
India is a country of ancient civilization. Its first inhabitants were Dravidians, whose culture we know mostly owing to excavated objects (Mohendjo Daro). Those objects show that Dravidians were the first peasants in India, and that between BC 6000 and 4000 they had a known culture (towns, trades, literacy). Around BC 2000 conquerors who called themselves Aryans (noble, dominant) started their invasion from the north. Struggle between Aryans and Dravidians lasted more than thousand years and it was over around BC 900. The Dravidians were defeated and they migrated to the outmost south of India and to Ceylon. There are no reliable historical documents about this struggle. There are just legends in Aryan sacred books, Vedas, and later in epics Mahabharata and Ramajana, written in Sanskrit.

In that period people were organized in tribal alliances. Economic strengthening and stronger power of the King caused division of the society into four castes, among which the common people, i.e. the lowest caste, must serve all the others. Wealth of India (spices, gold, ivory, precious stones) attracted the conquerors even in the ancient world. Persian emperor Daruis I conquered Panjab, riverfront of the Indus, in BC 516. Alexander the Great penetrated into the riverfront of the Ganges (BC 327-325). Penetration of invaders resulted in a rising against foreigners and to eventual uniting of northern India into a powerful kingdom Magadha (the fourth century BC). The most important persons in the first Indian state were emperors Chandragupta (BC 321-296) and Asoka (BC 273- 232), whose luxurious palace in the capital Pataliputri had astonished his contemporaries. Lower castes had been cruelly exploited, and therefore risings of people were not rare. People’s resistance was followed by a new religion, Buddhism. Buddhism denied the system of castes, although it was not, as well as Christianity, invite the oppressed to revolutionary fight, but it preached passiveness and bearing suffer, promising the oppressed people liberation from pain, transcendence of agony after their death and sinkage into nothingness or NIRVANA “.

Indian emperors soon realized that Buddhism was not a threat to the system. Thus some of them accepted and supported it, like Asoka did. After Asoka had died (BC 232) the kingdom Magadha fell apart, and there was not a bigger united state in India until the fourth century. After the kingdom of Gupta disunited, people who were used to passiveness for centuries could not strive against conquerors. So in the tenth century, the Afghanistan sultan of Gaznia (AD 998-1030) conquered a large part of India. Islam penetrates into the country, and feudalistic relations replaced the slave-holding ones. In the begining of the thirteenth century, Mongols devastated the contry. It was particularly destroyed during the Mongol khan Tamerlane at the end of the fourteenth century, when many irrigation systems were destroyed. Baber, one of the Tamerlane’s successors, conquered the whole northern India at the beginning of the fifteenth century, and from that moment started the reign of Mongols in India, which lasted till the nineteenth century.

Those events enable us at least to guess motives and reasons for leaving India. Namely, on the grounds of our knowledge so far, it could be said that Roma community was formed by uniting of several tribes, with various dialects, even of various races. The community most probably got its name after Rama, the legendary hero from the epic, and its members that were of different caste origin, became “Rama’s children.” As Rama’s children, or “Rromane }have” – Roma arrived to European countries. The evidence of this is given in chronicles, scientific researches, works of art, etc.

When Mahmud Gazni became ruler of the areas Panjab and Sind, Roma community actually disintegrated, and many tribes were outside India, the country that, as travel writers testified, had various names. Roma called it most probably ”Baro than”, “Large country”, or “Romani phuv”, “Country of Roma”, which is expression found in some legends and stories. Roma were also leaving India because of invasions of other conquerors, especially those by Mahmuda from Gor and Genghis Khan. The tribes that remained in India went to the north and to the south, and they can still be seen in many parts of India.

At last, it is necessary to emphasise some more reasons for migrations of Roma from their native country.

Roma was the first on the way of Hun hordes that were, in their invasion from the north and northeast, destroying everything on their way. Since Roma were nomadic, without a permanent place of residence, they started moving toward different parts of India, looking for a way to rescue themselves from a total destruction. They moved toward west. The fierce Hun hordes were after them. And when the first groups moved in that direction, there was no coming back. Other miserable Hindu joined them, too.

Some other reasons for migrations should be added to these historical ones, which altogether were sufficient for unbalance and shaping the psychology of escape. We should also not neglect climate elements: disastrous droughts and floods; periods of wet, summer monsoon and period of dry, winter monsoon (the season of summer monsoon is from May till October, and it blows from south-west toward north-east; this wind comes from the Indian ocean and it brings heavy rainfall; winter monsoon blows from north-east to south-west, from land toward the sea, and it is dry). If summer monsoon is only fifteen days late, a drought starts. The drought destroys crops and the consequence is hunger. In 1943, the summer monsoon was late, and 3.500.000 died of hunger. The second natural disaster is flood in the valley of Indian rivers, after heavy monsoon rains. Floods destroy crops in the large valleys near the rivers. Both of these disasters result in death of population and force them to move away. It is known that even today this social evil is present in India. Plague, yellow fever, bilharzia, dysentery epidemics, virus hepatitis, cholera and other epidemics of dangerous diseases in this area of high temperatures, destroyed millions of people in some parts of India. The most exposed to diseases were surely people who lived in miserable unhygienic life conditions and bad nutrition, which means that Roma were the most affected. These diseases caused, and cause today, much panic among Hindu, so the diseases were one of important reasons for migrations in the past, i.e. for leaving their native county.

Besides, in this county with millions of people belonging to different nations, they were, as it was already mentioned, divided in castes in the Middle Ages. The castes are characterised by big differences in way of life, language, belonging to religious sects, etc. Because of this there were conflicts and strife among castes, which led to extermination of certain groups of nations. In those conflicts Roma paid the highest price. The aim of religion and religious sects was assimilation, and this led to constants small wars of believers against each other. Modern India still carries that burden. Siki still confront other nations and state authorities. It is clear that these events caused migrations of Roma.

All those reasons forced Roma to leave their native country and to start the life of constant migrations and suffering. Such hard way is still present in their travels. Eventually, nomadic way of life caused that Roma were not nostalgically bound to some territory, as it was the case with the caste of soldiers and the caste of peasants in India.

Wars, persecutions, nomadic way of life, which was the cause of specific professions among Roma, and economic reasons led to migrations of Roma to some parts of the world, and they have lasted till the present time.

Nothing had been reliably known about the origin of Roma until the middle of the eighteenth century. Then, not having enough historical documents as a base for explaining this issue, scientists started research physical characteristics, customs and language of Roma, which enable them to affirm their origin.

German scientist Grelman was the first who arrived to a conclusion that Roma come from India, having researched physical similarities, analogies in customs and identities in roots of some words and grammar structures. His assumptions were correct, and they were later quite affirmed in the studies of Pott, Paspati and Mikloshic, so that we can now quite surely claim that Roma are of Indian origin.

Romi are similar to Dravidians. It is known that this ethnic group lives in the plateau Deccan, in the south part of peninsula in India. According to some ancient Indian sources, Dravidians were in captivity in the Indian peninsula during the invasion of the Aryans. At that time assimilation of dark-skinned Dravidians began. Thus is how, allegedly, Hindu-Aryan society was formed, and later Hindu traditional caste society. However those Dravidians who were not assimilated, remained out of the caste zone. They were slaves, doing hard physical jobs, and they were in bad social position. Their destiny has not changed almost a bit during centuries and it is alike even nowadays. Their status of “untouchables” usually brings to mind a clear association to Roma’s destiny all over the world. Their inferiority, fear and resourcefulness speak in the behalf of conclusion that Roma are direct descendants of the Dravidians. Ancient Indian sources contain information about which show us that many conquerors of the Indian peninsula used Dravidians as labour even outside this area. They were taken to the Persian Gulf in galleys. Then they were sent all over Persia, and later to the coasts of Africa and Europe or to Afghanistan and what is now Tashkent, and across Bosphorus to the Balkans. According to Naik Ransit, out of all groups of Roma that today live in India as aborigines, Banjarasi are the most related to Roma all over the world. It is confirmed that Ban|ara is one of the largest groups of Roma in India. They live in 21 states of India and their number is estimated to be about 60 million.

Ethnologists and linguists continue to study Roma who live in India nowadays. Thus under the name “Gypsy” they comprise the following tribes: Bamti, Beldari, Dom, Garodi, Gasai, Gulgulia, Kandzari, Kolhati, Ladi, Malari, Mianuali (or Lahari), Nati, Odki, Phendari, Sasi, Sikalgari, Banjara, Lamani, Shara i Luri.

The characteristic of Roma in Europe-that they have various names-can also be seen in Ban|arasa. They also have a large number of names. They are in fact famous for numerous synonyms in different parts of India: Lambani, Lobani, Lobano, Brinjari, Sugali, Brujavasi, Kvangli, Shirkiban, etc. Their inconstancy and moving from one territory to another explain such variety of names-each environment gave them a new name. According to scientific resources, these people have very dynamic and interesting life and an impressive culture. They have been nomadic travellers for centuries, and they have, using bulls, camels, horses, mules and elephants, been carrying various goods across the whole country, searching for a market and thus arriving to the remote parts of India.

Naik Ransit states: ,,After I studied literature and documents, I came to a conclusion that Banjarasi and Roma have many common traits.” These are his findings:

1. Roma dialects have many words similar to Banjara dialect

2.      Both Roma and Ban|arasi live as nomads and travel in caravans;

3.      Roma do not assimilate in the environment in which they settle for a while, i.e. they remain separate and independent; Ban|arasi also live separately and build settlements called tanda. The word “tanda” is also used by Roma in the town Gnjilane (Kosovo), which is interesting and indicative;

4.      Songs and dances of Roma and Ban|arasi are similar;

5.      Ban|arasi do not follow any existing religion, but worship their own gods;

6. Roma have many customs and habits that are similar to those of Ban|arasi,

7. Basing his opinion on Rishi’s research, Ran|it claims that Roma and Banjarasi descend from the same group and that the ancestor of both preserved their traditions. He also thinks that Banjarasi originated from Radgahstan and Radzput or Jatklan, as well as anthropological characteristics, way of living and folk culture are similar to those of Roma in Panjab and Radgahstan. Naik Ransit concludes: ,,Roma and Banjarasi are members of the same group; one part of that group, Banjarasi, stayed in India, and their relatives, known as Roma, passed through Kiber and Bolan in the north-west part of India in order to avoid invasion of Muslim states and therefrom began to move al over the world”.

Together with the inhabitants of Panjab, Banjarasi joined the action of European Roma and declared themselves as belonging to this nation. So far it has been the only Indian ,,Gypsy” tribe that raised a question of its ethnic origin and which, together with Roma outside India, fight for emancipation and national affirmation.

In this short review of historical development of European studying of Roma origin, we can see that it had to pass over a long way top reach some scientific truths about his issue. Unlike in Europe, several centuries ago Arabians knew that India had been mother country of Roma. Thus the outstanding Arabic lexicographer Ebu El-Fadil D`emaludin Muhamed, known as Ibn Menzur El-Ifriki El-Misri (died in 1311/12, or in 711 AD) without any doubt confirmed that Roma originated from India. In his great work “Lisan el-areb”, examining the word Zutt that is today in Arabic a literary expression for Roma, he stated that it denoted a group of black people from India. Clothes called Zuttije were named after them, and there is also an opinion that this term comes from the Indian word Gette.

The most reliable source of reaching the truth about Roma is based on researching characteristics of the language, since particularity of a nation is best preserved in it. It would be wrong to consider language only as a set of lexical and grammatical particularities. On the contrary, language is born, it develops and disappears in common evolutional process with the nation itself.

It is important to emphasise that research of Romany language and confirming Roma origin has been affirmed, and they engaged some outstanding linguists like August Fridrih Pott and Franc Miklosi’. In the 1890s these scientists has exactly confirmed that Romany language is related to seven Indian dialects: Hindi, Marati, Panjabi, Sindi, Bengali and Urdu.

These scientists claim that these seven dialects developed in the same area and under sane circumstances. According to Miklosic, it could have happened before the tenth century. It would mean that Roma left India after this period.

Clebert thinks that in studying Roma origin we should not only rely on analyses of dialects, but also on analyses of particularities that correspond to Roma professions. “If we take a look in catalogues of Indian castes, we will see that most of them were blacksmiths or musicians”. And as we know, traditional professions of Roma in Yugoslavia are blacksmith and musician.

Even today Roma’s prominent tendency towards trades and music refers to their belonging to higher castes in their mother country – India, which is confirmed by contemporary Indian scientists V. R. Rishi and Naik Ransit. At last, we can surely state that Roma’s talent for music is an important ethnic mark, so scientific circles claimed that this mark proved that India was their native country. It was thought that they were in fact Lurs, who were, according to traditional sources, invited by Persian shah to move from India to Persia (AD 420-440). This attitude is supported by A. F. Pott. We can also consider their talent for trades as an ethnic mark, since ethnic groups in modern India who belong to Roma also have professions such as blacksmiths or musicians. India is known (in old written documents) as a country rich in minerals. It is a fact that iron and other metals are forged in this country for centuries, which was recorded in history even in BC 1000. Handicraft trades were also developed in India, especially metalworking, so that forging was ancient profession of Roma. They brought the tendency towards these professions from India and took it with them all over the world.

Everything that was said about origin of Roma, based on written documents, can serve as a reliable proof that Roma – in respect to their appearance, temperament, language, folklore, traits of character and other sacred values-are part, i.e. members of the big Indian nation of Roma and they are most related to Ban|arasi, a big tribe of that nation. Their native county is India, their real home is Panjab in the middle part of the area along the Indus and further all the way to the desert Tar. Roma call India Baro Than, which means the big land of ancestors. In spite of time, place and extensive metamorphosis in many European countries, where they have often been like a grain of salt in an ocean, they remain independent in many aspects. On this basis, it is possible nowadays to accept their relations to other Roma groups in India as scientific fact.

Some time between the tenth and eleventh centuries, the largest groups of Roma left India and the main cause was invasion of the great emperor Mahmud Gazni, who led 17 raids in western India. Running away from terror, Roma first stopped in Iran, and then separated in two groups, the first moving toward Spain, and the second toward Byzantium and Greece.
Italy extends decree to expel immigrants

Dec. 28, 2007

ROME -- The Italian government Friday approved a decree allowing the expulsion of immigrants on grounds that they pose a threat to public safety.

The decree extends one approved in November after the wife of a naval officer was raped and killed in Rome, allegedly by a Romanian immigrant, the news agency Ansa reported. Parliament is expected to act next month on an immigration bill that would make the policy law.

About 500 people have already been forced to leave the country and another 1,200 could be expelled. Most of them are believed to be from Romania, now in the European Union, and many are Roma or Gypsies, like the man accused of the killing in Rome.

Welfare Minister Paolo Ferrero called for a "comprehensive commitment" to immigration reform. The government plans legislation that would help immigrants integrate into Italian society, the reports said.
Migration: The Italian Job

Romanian responses echo the insecurities and fears voiced by Italians over the “Gypsy murder” incident.

Emigrants generally do not enjoy good press in Romania. The media often indiscriminately label them “strawberry pickers.” When they do make the news, it is only in stories about new Romanian National Bank statistics showing how much money they send home, the boost to the national currency based on the strength of their buying sprees when they return for holidays, or accusation that they leave their children home alone (or in the care of the state) to go and make money abroad.

Large-scale emigration is a relatively new phenomenon for Romania, so there are as yet no large investments or social projects financially supported by emigrants, as has happened with Mexicans in the United States. Emigrants overwhelmingly tend to come from poor backgrounds, so their influence on Romanian political circles is almost nil, and the support they receive from the Romanian state is usually very limited.

This situation partly explains the reactions of Romanian politicians to the outbreak of hysteria against their fellow citizens in the wake of the murder of an Italian woman on 30 October in a Rome suburb. The main suspect is a Romanian citizen from a Romani settlement close to the train station in Tor di Quinto.

EveryOne Group is keeping a careful watch on the situation of the Rroms in Italy.

15.12.2007

It is not an easy job seeing the authorities and institutions are putting up increasingly impenetrable barriers between the places where the persecution of the Rroms is talking place and everyday citizens by putting constraints on the free press and the right of humanitarian organizations to observe what is going on during the camp clearances and expulsion operations. As we have reported on several occasions, the conditions of the Rrom people have become more and more disastrous as the pogroms against their settlements are throwing thousands of helpless human beings (most of whom are children and adolescents) out into the street without any means of support. Our group has been attempting to report the institutional destruction of the Rrom community in Italy by appealing to international authorities, and on November 15th, 2007, thanks to the support of enlightened political parties, it obtained the approval of the European Parliament Resolution on the application of Directive 2004/38/CE concerning the rights of citizens of the Union and their families to move freely and reside in the territory of member states.
Not included – Kosovo Roma refugees and the Decade for Roma Inclusion

06.01.2008

Launched in February 2005, the Roma Decade is termed „ an unprecedented political commitment by governments in Central and South Eastern Europe to improve the socio-economic status and social inclusion of Roma within a regional framework." The initiative is supported by the European Commission, the World Bank, national governments and major international donor organisations. Its actions focus on four priority areas: education, employment, health, and housing, with the governments being encouraged to also take into account, poverty, discrimination and gender main streaming.

Among the countries of South East Europe, Serbia, Montenegro, and Macedonia, have been part of the Decade since the beginning. Most of these countries have sizeable refugee and IDP communities from Kosovo which is not reflected in the national programmes. As a result, Kosovo Roma refugees as well as returnees from Western Europe remain excluded from the benefits of the Decade.

John Paul Freeman an Australian serving in the British Military is being held in custody for Murder. In his statement he told press that he had gone to the aid of a gypsy who was being attacked.

Attacks and beatings of Roma are a common problem in Europe, and the situation for Freeman is complicated by the fact that the man who died in the alleged attacks was Andrei Christov Manov, the 20-year-old son of prominent Bulgarian psychotherapist Cristo Manov. The other man involved in the stabbings is in stable condition.

Is it possible that this soldier of the British military could not witness the violence against the vulnerable population in Bulgaria without respondiing by giving aid?

Being new to the region arriving December 22 it may have been a shock to him to witness the sort of violence that many people in Europe tend to turn away from and ignore.

My question is when is enough enough?

When will Europeans show their humanitarian side and stop the violence against the Roma?

Hello, I am posting a question here and anyone may try to answer it and the answers will be appreciated. The tribe list called "Shuvani", waht does it mean? It seems to have many post related to the Roma as a subject, but do not understand. Because shuv in Romanes means "to put" (in a very nasty way), and "ani" is the adjective suffix saying kind or like, as in Romani (Roma-like). So Shuvani would mean then put it like. I do not understand if the term is supposed to be related to something in the language!

JANUARY 14 TO 21, 2008

It has been a long time now since I've started organizing this trip each year and taking to the heart of Rajasthan to meet this extraordinary cast of nomad musicians, dancers and snake charmers living in the Thar desert. They are nomad, each year I have to find their new camp location and it is always a big joy to find it. As always, it is going to be a several days workshop with these dancers and musicians, as always it is going to be a wonderfull human aventure, a warm welcom in their village (a very bi privilege) and of course a small performance improvised only for us. If you want to go back to the origins of Rroma people and their dances, if you want to discover the authentic "world" of Gulabi Sapera, Suwa Devi Kalbelya, Musafir and others, this is a trip to do!

The number of the participants is limited, but there are still a few places left, so if you decide to join us, this is the moment!

Hey all. I recently heard the song Opa Cupa and I just absolutely love it! I've been trying since yesterday to translate it but the dialect is messing me up a bit. I think it's a southern vlax dialect, which helps it make a little more sense to me, but I'm still pretty lost. Does anyone have an english translation of the song they could share?

This is what I came up with so far:

"Opa Cupa"

Me sem gova chavoro, = I am (gova could be gava?) I hide from the boys (?)

Khelav mange majlacho, = I want to dance better. (maj = more/lacho = good)

Oj andale mandale, = ???

E chora man astaren. = Choro = thief? you caught me

Kas me astarava, Me mange asava, = Kas? Ka = future tense in so. Vlax, so I will catch (?); I want to laugh

Sem o jekh chaj ni mangel = I am the one girl he doesn’t want. I've also seen mangel translated as to beg, but I'm not sure it applies here..

Voj mande puchel = S/he asks me,

O opa cupa = (loosely) „Won’t you dance.“

na ker mange chaje muka, = in the house (mange chaje muka)

Ti daj ka merel ako ni kheles. = Your mother would die (if?) you do not dance.

This line has me confused b/c I don’t know what ‘ako’ means. Apo is like “therefore/so” but Your mother will die so you do not dance doesn’t make sense since keles seems to be second person present tense, not imperative, which would be “khel,” as found below

Lumbaj , lumbaj, lumbalaj ajde ajde ajde,
Lumbaj , lumbaj, lumbalaj ajde ajde ajde.

Sa e chaja kelena, = ???

Voj ni mangel te khelel, = (Lit.) She does not want and dance (?)

Oj andale mandale, = ???

Mudarel man o devel. = S/he / It is killing me, Oh God!

Ava Ruza ava khel = Come, Ruza, come and dance.

Pa i tiro mek avel, = (Pa i) yours, let him come?

Oj andale mandale = ???

E sviracha ka kelen. – can’t find ‘sviracha’ anywhere.. ka kelen = they will dance

O opa cupa ... etc.

Chao maj o hutalo, = ???

I Ruza so ni kelel, = Ruza what not he dances (lit.) ... maybe, why won’t she dance?

Oj andale mandale = ???

an bobo ki astarel – ??? astarel = he catches

Any help is appreciated!

Hey everyone! I just picked up a book (Used) through Amazon called "We are the Romani People". It is written by Ian Hancock. I'm not sure who the previous owned or the book was or how many owners it had. But someone wrote all through the book discrediting what the author had written. I have only had the time to flip through it and several pages someone wrote that something the author said was not true or history happened differently.
So, my question to the group is this: Has any one read or heard of this book? What is your opinions of it?: Is Ian Hancock a creditable author or expert on this subject (I'm sorry I have not heard of him before, but I do see where he has written several books)?

Thanks!

Dear friends,

I am leaving in a few days to Serbia, to see my family, to see my Rroma friends
and of course, prepare everything for the Serbian rromany music and dance tour
that I organise in august. A lot of people contacted me for this trip and I am
very happy to see that people are finally opened to visit these countries ad to
meet Rroma as they are! They will be very happy to welcome everyone who is truly
interested in their culture. So if you wish to join us for this trip, please let
me know as soon as possible. I prepared for you a lot of fun : dancing with the
rroma musicians, going out to some very funny places, cultural visits and of
course a stay in Guca during the famous Guca brass band rromany festival.
There, we will have the great Demiran Cerimovic (Rroma from south of Serbia, the
last year's winner) playing just for us! This trip will take place between
August 5 and 13, 2007.

For those who can't come to Serbia and wish to hear Demiran Cerimovic, it is
possible in july in Western Europe! We will be playing in Belgium (for the
national hollidays) and France (Escoeuilles first and at Avignon Festival
then). We still have a date available between july 15th and 19th. If you would
like to invite us, here is your chance to do it without paying the travel
costs! We present together the rromany music and dances from the Balkans. Nine
musicians and myself (singing and of course dancing).

And finally, I decided not to continue teaching for a long time anymore. I have
other plans and finally, these dances are difficult to teach. How to explain to
people something they you don't explain, that you feel only? But I still have a
few upcoming workshops, the next one is Athens where I will be teaching the rromany dance from Rajasthan and Egypt and then in Paris on june 23 and 24.. I will teach 4
differents workshops, rroma dances from Rajasthan, Turkey, Serbia and Central Europe. You are welcome to book your places.

Paco Fonta from Miami organised it... you can check out his website at www.siempreflamenco.com and hear him and his wife, Celia, perform. Also, you can google pacofonta at youtube to see a few videos of Eva and Maria Montilla sing Cante Jondo.

I was able to meet the performers since my friend (DJ Rama) helped out at the event and we got to go to the after party, which had better music and dance than the show in my opinion.

About ten years ago I discovered my mother's family were Rromani from Europe who'd arrived in Chicago sometime after the civil war and before 1900. This was a huge surprise to me since before then her "Bohemian" ancestry had been of little importance other than an aside seemingly during the one time in my life she'd told me about herself when I'd tape recorded a four hour conversation between us for an oral history project in '73.

Since this discovery I've gotten involved with Shani Rifati a little who a friend had chanced to meet I'd told of this then new knowledge of mine.(he is president of Voice of Roma, who is a Kosovoan Rromani refugee who fled to Italy in '88) But, I'm also aware of a periphery of aquaintences seemingly perhaps all of my life, who like me seem to perhaps be of a similar ancestry to mine. I do know that in 1885 the first federal anit-Gypsy law came to be, which then required deportation so that I imagine my mother's family had to disguise their identities. She'd been raped and orphaned at the age of twelve and suffered mental illness most of her life, including electro-shock twice before I was ten so severe she said it took six months merely to remember her own name.

After I left Evergreen College in Olympia, WA I ended up part of a communal yoga study group calling itself then Antahkarana Circle of Healers, that were a group of indigent transients all with some degree of education who were trying to support themselves doing orchard work who were interested in yoga and who early each summer every year produced a gathering that drew around a thousand people over a three day weekend. Several people I got to know then openly identified as Gypsys, and since finding out this is also my own ancestry I've often thought many others drawn there as I was might very likely be similar. Lately I've found this area around Tonasket, WA is one known as a place where Gypsys do live, so that all the more intrigues me.

I like the Sebastapol Herdeljezi Festivals Shani and his wife Carol Bloom organise along with others, to help try to benefit Kosovaon Rromani. But, I still feel out of place and am almost lucky to have some problems with my right foot from an injury I did May of '97 sitting on my heels playing my alto sa
