another Spinagogue update

hey Spinagoguers,
we have made a few changes based on which classes got the most signups.

1) We are canceling the 1:30 class on saturday (Double Staff II with
Noel) and replacing it with another section of Poi II which was
scheduled for the same time so there is still room for more signups.
2) We are also changing the 4:30 class on Sunday (Partner Poi II) to
another Partner Poi I with Greg and Margaret.
3) The Poi Dance class with Ian on Sunday at 2:30 is FULL as is the
Partner Poi I with Noel and Jordan at noon on Sunday.
4) There are still spots in all of the other workshops so you can
still sign up for more!

ALSO:
On Saturday night there will be a night of performance, music, and
spinning at the Prop Box Studio.

Performances come from groups and individuals that use the Prop Box to
refine their art:
Vulcan Crew(http://vulcancrew.com) performing their latest creation.
Laura Stokes of ricochet circus on aerials(http://www.ricochet.name/).
Bliss Butterfly(http://blissbutterfly.com)
Performances by Prop Box residents Ian
Smith(http://ianmichaelsmith.com), Brian
Thompson(http://www.circusconspiracy.com/), and Bri Crabtree.

This is the Saturday night of Spinagogue, a weekend spinning intensive
held at the Vulcan, so there will be a ton of people people here
already, if you aren't attending the Spinagogue be sure to come to
this event to join the fun.

This is a free event and a fundraiser, donations accepted at the door
and a raffle will be held.

I had a great time hanging out with the vulcan crew before burning man. I met so many amazing people and then saw some of you again at burning man. =) I will be back for fire drums and may move out there someday. =) Your bridges kind of scare the shit out of me. I hope none you are ever on one when an earthquake decides to eat one. I did end up walking on the golden gate bridge but only a little bit. I will post the pics of me soon. I know you will love the one of me at Alcatraz wearing a clown nose! Thank you Jordan for that clown nose. =) Also, thank you Alex for the list of touristy shit to do.

I moved my Amsterdam trip to Spring break since I really can't afford any more time off. Anyone want to join me? I will be there March 27 through April 5th.

ok enough randomness for one post.
I love you Vulcan crew

Bolinas would love to have you and so would I! Inviting you to spin fire at night after the daytime festivities where you are allowed to play without fire or just play (theres lots to do). I've got a fairly large space to crash out slumber party style...but if there are a lot of you, Im sure the community will open there doors to performers (they usually do). Be spontaneous and spend your 4th in this Secret town. Message me for directions (most maps are misleading and there is no sign for the one turn into the town...the locals keep taking it down) No money involved but I'll provide fuel and a place to stay. Peace :)

Does anyone have Ulysses' contact information? (Lost & Found)

A few weeks at the Grove, after everyone dissipated, a friend of mine found a jacket left behind. It had juggling balls and poi in the pockets, and I recognized the rainbow-ey poi to be Ulysses'. I'd like to get them back to him (the poi are probably pretty beloved, well-worn with water balloons in them, nice and squishY!) However, I don't have his contact information -- does anyone know how I can get ahold of him?

I am doing a heavy metal music video end of June/early July. I have a full crew to do this and I need some people who like to play with fire.
You must be experienced at doing this, and do it safely around the crew.
You must be good at keeping in contact with us.... NO FLAKES PLEASE
This shoot will take two days, on the weekend.
Sorry, no pay...Any cost that there is for things such as kerosene,gun powder, ect.... I will cover that cost as long as it's not an arm and a leg-- you get to be in the video, and get credit. Food will be provided.
Thanks! Anyone that can direct me to these kinds of people would be great.

* Location: East Bay
* it's NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests

We can't offer any cash, but can offer publicity and are hoping for 200+ for the event... Thanks so much!!!!

Hello all,

Just wanted to let you know that at this next Vulcan Spin Jam (Wednesday the 7th), we are having our second Arm-Dance Off! The last one was a big success, with Poki and Brian battling me and Bri. Unfortunately, both teams were disqualified due to a use of props. The ONLY rule is that you cannot use props! It will probably occur within the hours of 10-11. All are welcome, and if you want to join in, well, you better do some fast choreography (:

Current lineup:

Poki & Bliss
Bri & Brian
T.Z. & Tankboy

Hope to see you there!

Oh, and we have two of the cooolest kittycats in the world...so hopefully you aren't allergic!

Wow.
They wouldn't let me, Noel, Jordan, Jaine, or Alex into the UK because we apparently didn't have the right paperwork to perform (even though it was an unpaid gig). they told us to get out or take the next flight back to the US. We decided to go to Amsterdam.
So after about 20 hrs in transit we arrived in Amsterdam :)
We are off to the EJC on Aug 1st. We'll keep you updated.

On Playa Burning Man Staff/Media Party looking for roving performers

I am posting this for my friend/coworker/campmate who is putting together a shindig at media mecca this year at Burning Man for Media staff, volunteers, and Press that will be at the event. It's a cool opportunity to get in a bit with the Burning Man office folk, maybe get in the news some, and help out an awesome girl that plans MANY Burning Man events. Plus its free food & drinks:)

~~~~~~
http://people.tribe.net/meghanrutigliano/blog?topicid=97fc3444-2447-4ab3-b151-2e46c49fb2ea
Hello lovely makers of Merriment!
I am helping to plan a Press Party at Media Mecca on Thursday during the burn (August 28th) from 4-6pm. I'm doing my darndest to make this a fun affair and who better to add sparkle to a party than my playafide uber-talented friends???
What we are looking for: Roving performers (juggling, magic trickery, accordion playing, etc) to dazzle Press and volunteers at a fun, low-key Happy Hour party on THURSDAY (4-6pm) . We want the mood to be festive but we want people to be mingling so we are not seeking any "stop and watch" or staged acts. Performers will be primarily creating ambiance.
Please contact me on tribe or at meghan@burningman.com and let me know what you do and the best way to contact you before the playa.
There will be food and Rocket Sauce (the infamous MM happy hour beverage) as well as lots of wide-eyed folks with (tagged and approved) press cameras. Limelight, here you come...
holler at yo girl....
SmOOches,
Megs
So it looks like I'm going to BM 08 after all! Hurray Pyronauts! It also looks like the cheapest plane tickets from Tampa FL are to SFO, so is there anyone in the Bay area who wants to house an Alien, who will be arriving sometime around the 19-22nd of August?
Also does anyone in the Bay Area have a seat in their BM destined car for said Alien and his meager personal effects?
Anyone have room for the return trip from BRC?
Hey all!
This is the scoop. My girl and I are into BM early, on the L3K crew. We would like to fly into Oakland, and possibly come by the Vulcan (miss you guys already!). We have found a ride in on Sunday, but this ride leaves early too, like before the burn. So, is anyone needing some company for the return trip? There will be the two of us, and minimal gear as we will probably send most of our stuff with our theme camp (KOI Pond).
So that's what's up, anyone know of a ride out and/or possibly be able to put us up for a day or two? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys, much love!
Because I am...for 2 weeks and a bit, and i have no dog care as of yet. I leave august 15th, and have yet to find anyone not going that would be able to take care of lola, my fluffy lovable puppy... until about september 2nd or 3rd.
I'm offering up my house for free for the time I'm gone, if anyone wants to live in a quiet place in the oakland hills with a deck and a lil forresty back yard...I'm happy to fill up the fridge/pantry with anything you want, I'll take care of any living expenses you may incur...I'd just like someone to be staying there to watch lola... She can be left alone, if you have work or want to go out, there is a doggy door to the yard so she can let herself out if youre not there... she just needs to be walked and fed and loved and such...
any takers? or know anyone that needs somewhere to stay for a little bit? ...anything?
also, same deal applies if anyone is available from september 11th-21st, when I will be in Japan, if youd like to take me up on it then.
Thanks!
I wanted to extend a heartfelt thank you for this weekend's Spinagogue. Your generosity and skill sets are noted and much appreciated. Noel's classes are always amazing. Greg, thanks for getting me through the 'inner plane' paradigm shift and on path for a whole new frikkin' set of planes to work. Krissy...you're just the shnizz. Give Ma Humphries a hug for me as I neglected to say 'buh-bye' to her. Aileen: What are you? Catholic? How many sisters do you have? Ian, you are just one of the good ones...you always are fun to hang with.
Hoodie, Jay, Lilly, Dave, et al...you guys are the coolest. Much love to y'alls.
So who all am I going to see at wildfire, and do any of you still need rides?
I live in northwest connecticut, so if you are going to be coming into hartford, or are looking for a way out of new york, i could pick one-two people up at the Waterbury metro-north station (much cheaper than amtrak). Metro- North is the commuter rail into CT, and Waterbury is it's northernmost stop. So if anyone still needs a ride or anything, drop me a line :)
Can't wait to see you all in five days, I miss the Vulcan like mad.
Surprize! July Spinagogue Weekend!
July 11-13th Spinagogue Weekend!
In celebration of the 1 year anniversary of Spinagogue we will be hosting another weekend poi intensive. If you liked poi back then, you probably like poi even more now! Just like the first Spinagogue this one will be totally dedicated to poi.
What is Spinagogue? Check out our past events:
The first Poi Spinagogue: http://youtube.com/watch?v=fYZP_K575rI
The Spinagogue staff weekend: http://youtube.com/watch?v=7s32VKyXfXo
Spinagogue is a weekend intensive designed to radically improve your skills while immersing you in the Bay Area fire scene: 21 workshops, three days of food, and it’s all happening during the Crucible Fire Arts Festival (featuring the Vulcan Crew).
This time around we are trying something new. We have designed the schedule to fit the needs of spinners at all levels. There are 3 tracks you can sign up for: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced, each designed to improve many aspects of your spinning including dance and movement, tricks and techniques appropriate to that level, and even working on choreography with groups and partner moves.
The Vulcan is a hotbed of fire arts located in the hear of “lovely” industrial East Oakland. In addition to hosting the east bay’s beast and brightest spin jam, the Vulcan is home to over 100 local performers and artisans of all types. Three workshop spaces and living are inside the Vulcan will host our festivities. Free lodging (sorry, couches only) will be available Friday though Sunday for participants from outside the Bay Area. Additionally, hotels are available locally starting at about $50 a night.
A typical day at the Vulcan:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=HpjnvqKeoHs
Schedule of Events
Friday, July 11: Meet, greet, and eat
We begin the weekend with a welcome dinner at the Vulcan. Dinner will begin promptly at 7. Feel free to stay after and spin with us. The Spinagogue instructors will be on hand to asses your spinning progress and help you set goals for the weekend.
Saturday, July 12: Workshop, workshop, workshop, Fire Arts Festival!!
3 workshops, an hour and a half long, begin at 10AM and run until 4:30PM. Breakfast and stretching start at 9AM. Lunch is at 11:30 and dinner at 5. After dinner, many Spinagogue instructors are performing in the Crucible Fire Arts Festival (www.thecrucible.org/fireartsfestival). You are all encouraged to come and enjoy the festivities.
Sunday, July 12: Workshops, dinner, collapse!
4 workshops begin at 11AM and run until 8PM including a viewing of some of the best object manipulation videos the internet has to offer. Breakfast and stretching start at 10. Lunch is at 12:30. Stay for dinner at 7 and relax. You’ve had a long, hard weekend.
Intermediate tricks and transitions w/ Krissy
In this class we will learn flowers, anti-spin flowers, stalls, and many more exciting moves. We will also learn how tricks are connected and how to create flow and connection in your spinning.
Poi Basics w/ Noel
Get down with the basic moves in all timings and directions. This poi class will cover the fundamentals of weaves, extensions, turning, buzzsaws, butterflies, lock-outs and separations.
Beg Antispin and Isolation w/ Noel
This class will cover the fundamentals of isolation and antispin. By using the horizontal plane as a starting point for drills, we will uncover how to integrate antispin and isolation into all of your preexisting and future technique.
Int Antispin and Isolation w/ Noel
Take your understanding of isolation and antispin to the next level. Learn the basics and beyond of antispin flowers, isolated buzzsaws, antispin/isolated weaves and more!
Adv Antispin and Isolation w/ Noel
In this class you will learn basic unit circle theory and its relation to antispin and isolation. All the while learning impressive tricks such as linear isolations, extensions and cateyes.
Beginning T&D: The Essentials /w Greg
Timing and Direction are the two most important elements in the modern system of poi instruction. Learn the two basic timings and combine them with the two directions to create the four combinations of timing and direction that are used to understand almost all contemporary spinning technique. Then get started on transitioning fluidly from one to the next.
Intermediate T&D: Stalls and Transitions /w Greg
Strengthening your fundamentals is the easiest way to improve your spinning. This class is designed to find the "holes" in your technique by comprehensively reviewing the essentials of timing and direction, then exploring the nearly infinite number of connections between them. Learn a variety of stalls
Advanced T&D: Atomics, Insides and Super Stalling /w Greg
Take your understanding of spinning fundamentals to the next level in this class designed to broaden your understanding of spinning. We will explore the relationships between combinations of timing and direction with a variety of stalls and stall combinations. Next we challenge our mastery of T&D by taking it to the inside planes. Last, we explore the frontier where T&D breaks down as we leave behind the two dimensional conception of spinning.
Insides Polyrhythm and Atomics /w Greg
Explore three topics in advanced poi. Insides open up a world of tricks that mirrors the one you know
but exists inside the space that you create. Polyrhythm gives a whole new look to old technique by switching up the speed of your circles. Atomics opens up the world of clashing planes and breaks down the system of timing and direction that informs most modern spinning.
Intermediate and Advanced Partner Poi w/ Silence
This class covers technique and choreography in relation to poi duets. Technical emphasis will be on two-person interactive moves, rather than simultaneous moves. How to choreograph a routine from scratch will also be discussed. Bring a partner or find one in class.
Dance Dance Information w/ KT
A set of poi can make a great dance partner. Explore poi manipulation from a dance based perspective with an emphasis on integrating body and prop.
Video
We’ll show you all the best object manipulation videos the internet has to offer.
Hey kids!
Are any of you lovely folks going to BRC early? We (Melissa and I) are on the L3K crew, and it requires being in on Sat. (not burn night silly). It would be much cheaper and easier to take off work if we fly into Oakland and ride in, whilst we send our gear with friends.
If you guys hear anything let me know asap, and I'll talk to you soon!
June 1st at the Marin Cheese Factory (about two miles past Stafford Lake).
21 DAYS OF BLACK ROCK CITY: TIME LAPSE AND LARGE PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINT EXHIBITION
The centerpiece of this exhibit is a 180-degree panoramic-view time-
lapse of the rise, week-long event, and dissipation of Black Rock
City, presented on three 50" high-resolution plasma displays. Also
featured in the exhibition is a selection of 130+ large-format
photographic prints taken by nine photographers.
Opening reception Sunday, June 1st, 1pm-5:30pm, with free wine and
cheese. The exhibition is free to the public.
I emailed the event planner and he would love to have some of us out there spinning. It is a day gig with cheese and wine, so unless somebody is up for spinning fire during the daytime, we're prolly gonna play with soft tools. Who's down?
You guys did an amazing job of picking people up, showing us the city, and just being cool with having loads of spinny folk crash all over your homes.
So I just kinda let it slide, on account of all the amazingness going on over the last month... but my 3.5" clear UV acrylic sphere (with scratches) when missing somewhere in the Vulcan (I think). Most likely it is in 14, 56, or 48. I think I mentioned this to a few of you guys when I was looking for it, but I figure I might as well give a general call to keep your eyes open. Please let em know if it turns up!!
Hey all. We were lucky enough to get Noel, Ian, Jordan, and Greg of the Vulcan Crew in Oregon to teach some workshops earlier this month. After the workshops, we all hit the Portland fire jam for fire fun and here's the result :
Now that It's less likely that I infect a large portion of the global spinning community with the "Rage Virus", does anybody wanna play?
Hi guys,
I am a Canadian who has a ride home from Fire Drums but not TO fire drums. I need to leave here on Tuesday or Wednesday April 29/30 to get down to Santa Cruz respectively. I really really want to go, and I am considering a few options. The first option I am looking into is to take the bus to Seattle/Portland and see if anyone is actually leaving those cities for the festival on Thursday or Friday morning.
As a Canadian who hasn't gone deeper in your country than Portland, I was hoping to go to the festival straight from there, so I don't get lost along the way!
I am waiting to buy my ticket to ensure that I can go! Please let me know if you can help,
Thanks
Dawn
x-posted from fuego family events:
Hello everyone:)
Dave, Adrienne and I decided that it was about time we had a little celebration:) And being that it's st patrick's day, why not tonight?
Super short notice, and super informal, we just wanted to invite all our friends for a chance to enjoy the holiday together and have some fun:) There will be large amount of traditional irish music playing (dropkick murphys, flogging molly, the cranberries, U2, that song breakfast at tiffanys...anything else we can get our hands on) and irish beverages, as well...green guiness, whiskey, baileys, etc. Feel free to being something to share, snacks or drink:)
There may be like, 3 people, there may be more...but it's St Patricks day, and while i dont live in Boston anymore, I'm still gonna have fun!! You should come too!
So...everyone's invited to our place around 9, bring your friends, bring your props (much spinning will be had, i'm sure), and just come hang out:)
And maybe youll get a chance to meet our new roomate if she's free, youre gonna love her, she's super kick ass:)
GET YOUR GREEN ON
~~~~~~~~

hi everyone --

i know this is a long-shot (and last-minute), but i thought
i'd throw it out there anyway.

my daughter goes to the French-American school in SF,
and this week they (the 8th-graders) are involved in an exchange-program
with a school in Paris.

these visitors are seeing chinatown, city hall, pier 39, ghirardellli,
sfmoma, the de young, sausalito, etc., etc. blah, blah, blah

tonight I'm organized a BEACH FIRE for all these visitors,
to give them a taste of real-California

first of all, if anyone cares to join us, please do!

second of all --
if anyone feels like getting a little fire-spinning-practice in --
in front of an impromptu audience of wide-eyed 13-year-old girls and
boys from Paris . . .
I think that would give them something they would remember
for a long long time! : )

never hurts to put the word out.

either way, feel free to join us around the fire.
the weather has been great this week.

we'll be gathering early tonight (it's a school-night) --

we'll probably be there from about 6:30 to 8:30pm or so.

As such, it will not teach moves (though some will be covered) but will instead cover theory and concepts of movement applied to hoop technique. Special attention will be given to hand and body rolling techniques, isolations, antispin applications and direction changes. Participants should be able to transition easily between at least three different moves (it doesn't matter which ones) to get the most out of the class.

Juggling

Beginning Juggling - Jordan Campbell or Bree Crabtree
In this class you will learn the 3 ball cascade – the fundamental building block of juggling patterns – as well as several variations. Everyone can learn how to juggle and the class will be taught in a very simple, sequential manner to ensure that you come out of the class having learned to juggle, guaranteed.

Beginning Contact Juggling - Noel Yee
The ball moves. The ball doesn't move. Come join us in this introductory class that will teach how you to move the ball through space gracefully and then keep it still in visually engaging ways. Close attention will be paid to beginning balancing, isolations and body rolls. No experience required.

Beginning Contact Juggling - Greg Maldonado
Learn how to use the fewest number of the simplest type of prop: one ball. Combining balancing, rolling and spinning to fluidly move a ball across your body, contact juggling will broaden your idea of what juggling can be while deepening your understanding of your relationship with objects.

“Other” Props

Rope Manipulation - Ian Smith
Rope Manipulation… what’s that supposed to mean? It’s everything can do with a jump rope other than jump over it! Poi experience is helpful in this class but not required.

Club Swinging - Poki
Break free from the chains that bind you!
Club swinging bridges the gap between poi and staff -- and will increase you skill in both! You will learn: basic club handling, common poi moves with clubs, odd poi moves with clubs, and some strange looking new club moves.
See you at spinagogue! ~Poki

Beginning Rope Dart – Sam Reese
Learn how to manipulate this most mysterious of props. Half dance half martial arts, rope dart combines beautiful motions with sudden eye catching surprises. Take the first step to mastering this ancient prop.

Beginning Whip Cracking - Mushashi or Elias
Learn to use the loudest, and the most dangerous prop of them all. Safety glasses are required, please try to bring your own, we will have a limited number to loan out. This workshop will teach you the basic cracks and the importance of finesse.
