1) Watershed is a interesting mixture of public and private. Given that one is in contact with a random selection of the public at all times, there is no implied Right to Privacy during one's time here. We ask that all participants in activities at Watershed, in public spaces, conduct themselves in a way that they wouldn't mind having portrayed on the cover of the Oregonian. Occasionally there are reporters, police and fire officials here in both an official and unofficial capacity.

2) The Federal DEA's office of the Narcotics Undercover Division is the grey building across McLoughlin. Be Mindful!

3) Watershed retains and reserves all rights and privileges for all media taken within the premises, especially during public events. While we are happy to sign over on a case-by-case basis any needed publishing rights, we do it on a case-by-case basis so that, in the event of unwanted publicity on a news or internet website, we are still on legal grounds to send a cease-and-desist letter to any such breach of our copyright.

4) Having reserved to ourselves the legal rights of publication, be aware that it is always our intention, at least in part, to publish and create a public profile of ourselves, including disinformation and entirely false representations of our activities here. As a result of K8's pressure on this topic, we placed on the walls at the entrance the sign that says, "You Will Be Recorded And Broadcast In The Course Of The Evening".

This is something that I could have included in the liability waiver, and for that I apologize. We do have every intention of making public the pictures and video from Pudding Wrestling, and if anyone was under the impression that their performance was not in a public place intended for broadcast far and wide, please discuss this loudly and vocally now.

  • I wasn't under the impression that I *wouldn't* be recorded/broadcasted thanks to whoever did make the signs!
But if this is always the state of things I don't know that I'll be attending other Watershed events, however fun.

I find it a bummer to have publicity so vehemently forced. Some of us don't like the spotlight.
    • Planning on webcams, as well. video is taken at random around here whenever anyone picks up a camera, and given that Oregon has a law requiring some form of consent to _audio_ record people, the only way for us to have useable footage for things like Pirate Mail is to have a blanket permission by virtue of the person's very presence here.

Consider, if you will, the ubiquity of cameras at our events... our option is either to keep ALL of those people out, and lose all record of our work down here, or tell all of the participants, such as yourself, that recording and subsequent broadcasting is the norm.

We do allow groups/projects to ask for a Time-Sensitive Context-Dependent Media Blackout for the course of an evening or a film project, so if you ever wanted to come down and have that be a condition, it is arrangeable.

This building IS a conversation about media, broadcast and networking. As such, it exists in a constant state of Fish-Bowl-ness. The way to live in a fishbowl is to create an artificial, intentional story rather than no story.

Thanks for helping us get this conversation going!
