An overview of All the Pretty Snakes...(& Bellydancers)

Snakes coming out of our ears! That aptly describes the last few weeks. And a lot of fun. Our collaboration with Tribal Bazaar, “All the Pretty Snakes… (& Bellydancers)”, has not only kept us up day and night with set design, development and location scouting, but taught us much about snakes. We are looking forward to reaching our halfway mark today by finishing the 6th of our planned 12 shoots… and moving swiftly towards the graphic design portion of this unique and one-of-a-kind, 12-month calendar (for 2010).

The following videos offer a snapshot of our collaboration… watch them in order and you will very much have a sense of the development of this project! We hope you’ll also get a good laugh, but more importantly, inspiration.

- Begins August 20, 2009! -
Thursdays, 5:45-7:00 pm
Drills, Zills, and Layering!
EPICA, 840 Mitchell Road, Newbury Park, 91320

Drill your zill work and zill through your drills! Expand your understanding of belly dance with zill drills and become increasingly at ease with zilling while you dance. Walks, turns, and graceful floorwork? These are all part of a basic dance vocabulary that every
subtleties into your dance, refine what you know, and get a great workout all at the same time in this 75 minute-long class!

This class runs in 6 weeks sessions. Next session runs August 20-October 1, 2009. If you have questions about whether or not your
skill level would be appropriate for this class, don't hesitate to contact me.
Class fees:
Single class = $14
Single series = 6 class package option = $66
10 class package = $100

July 11th - Understanding Middle Eastern Music and Rhythms

Dance Theory workshop with Master Percussionist Souhail Kaspar (www.neareastmusic.com) and Kashmir Isis.
~ Understanding Middle Eastern Rhythms and Music for Dance ~

This workshop is designed for dancers of all levels, and styles. It is an invaluable tool for any dancer who wants to step their dance up to the next level. The challenge of dancing to Live Music is a special one, and something that every dancer can use in her performance career.

Master instructor Souhail Kaspar (www.neareastmusic.com), the originator of this unique style for teaching Traditional Arabic Dance, began his formal workshops in the United States in the 1980's. In this class, he serves as a teacher and coach for all levels and styles of dancers. Mr. Kaspar gives students the tools to "hear" Middle Eastern Rhythm and Music and the skills to match the traditional dance movements of Raqs al Sharqi to what they hear. His presentation style is clear, precise and fun!

Kashmir Isis of Los Angeles has been an avid student of the dance since the early 90's, having spent years carefully studying with local and international teachers in weekly classes and workshops. She is a graduate of the Ansuya Certification Program, and has performed with Live Musicians in and around Los Angeles since her debut in 1999. She will illustrate how the movements match the music to create a seamless performance and how to grow the skills and maintain them for use in different performance settings.

SATURDAY JULY 11th 2009
Mockingbird Tribal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZK0UqI07bk - I was kind of busy henna'ing during this performance. I'm glad I watched the video. You ladies are fantastic!

Paul and Yasemin: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUMMvd9SY_4 - You guys are so sweet and so much fun to watch dance. :) And this was such a great way to end a great night.

Thanks again to Gigi and Lee for hosting it, everyone for coming/performing/vending (especially Paul and Yasemin who let me root through their wares with my grubby little hands to get my choker and ring for the evening), and Richard for doing video/photography.

Pictures from Richard are here! http://renaissancefaire.net/20090131-Weathervane/index.htm

Gigi has been kind enough to allow us ( and Enchantress) to have sales during the WVA /Epica event.
Space will be VERY limited so we will be bringing only some selcet items. If you want anything ~please let us know~ before, so we can bring it.

I'll probably have stuff in the Van also so maybe can slip in a parking lot sale if there isn't room in the studio.

We've got a LOT of closeout items at great prices (gotta pay for the new stuff ;-) so teachers, students , bargain hunters, come prepared!
Info on the event here:
'tribes.tribe.net/weatherva...62982f352'

We'll be posting our Vending schedule soon, and will be having a lot of 'Show Specials' so come out and see us!

The first hafla is all set for Saturday, January 31st! The final lineup is: Desdemona, Anna M., Dahab, Molecular Midriffs, Wild Routes, Nancy, Mockingbird Tribal, Eshta Amar, and Paul and Yasemin... which will definitely be the perfect way to lead us into an open dance session! I am cooking up a lovely lentils and onion dish for all of the vegetarians plus more!
$8 at the door, bring your camping chair or pillow to sit plus additional money as there will be vendors (Tribal Bazaar, Enchantress Designs, and Weathervane Images, maybe more?).

The date of the next hafla is more or less set - Saturday April 4th! March is going to be too busy between the Ojai Bellydance Festival and Mythical Creatures. So mark your calendars for 4/4/09 and contact me now if you'd like to be included in the lineup!

Belly dance classes with Georgina

NOW OFFERING BACK-TO-BACK CLASSES ON THURSDAYS starting October 16!
5:30-6:30 pm Bellydance Basics - Rhythms and veil introduction
6:45-7:45 pm Intermediate – Choreography and performance emphasis

Bellydance Basics: A vital part of any dance is learning the rhythms. In addition to learning how to isolate your upper body from your lower body and vice versa, you'll acquire a sense of various middle eastern rhythms and the moves paired with them. This is a mixed-level class; beginners will gain flexibility and movement; intermediate students will refine their technique, strengthen movements and begin to stylize using arms, layering, and level changes... A portion of this class is also dedicated to learning how to dance with a veil using single veil technique. Come to make friends, have fun, and get a great workout!
~~~Series runs October 16-December 4 (no class on 11/20 or 11/27)~~~
Intermediate Choreography: Building on the foundational movements and skill set introduced in my Beginning class, this 1 hour class incorporates walks, turns, rhythm and tempo changes as you put it all together for upcoming performances. Have you ever wanted to learn how to do floorwork? This is the class that will challenge and push you in that direction! Stylization, improvisation, and longer choreographies are emphasized. Participating in this class automatically grants you the opportunity to perform at my hafla which is held every other month, as well as other bellydance events throughout the year. Bellydance for expression, exploration, fitness, and fun! ~~~This class must be taken concurrently with the Basics class and is ongoing~~~
Take advantage of one of these two promotions!
• Take both classes and receive 50% off the second class
• Two-for-one*! --Two enrollments for the price of one. Bring a friend!
Class fees: $12/single class • $30 – 3 class package • $54 – 6 class package
*Applies only to first time students for the same series/Beginning-level class.
So glad we went and what a great way to end this year of community events that the two of you hosted for the rest of us to commune.
I hope you continue this vein in the new year - it is much appreciated. I have met many new cool people and gotten a chance to see the up an coming student troupes getting their first chance to perform.
Open Photo Shoot Sunday Night 7PM at Wildwood
Hey Everybody,
I'm shooting a wedding tomorrow(Saturday) and have rented some equipment that I have until Monday. That leaves me with some fun photo stuff to play with on Sunday, and I want to have a reason to use it. As such!! I'm sending an open invitation to everybody to come to Wildwood Park(in T.O. at the end of Ave. de los Arboles) at 7PM on Sunday if you want some free photos taken against, what I hope will be, a beautiful sunset. This doesn't have to be just bellydance related!
Let me know if you're interested. This is just for fun. Again, I'll be there from about 7PM to 9PM. Call me at 805-660-3831 or email a reply.
Hope to see you then! Bring wine........if you want.
Lee
P.S. God knows I don't have everyone's email. Spread the word.
Hafla date changed (for GOOD REASON!)
Please note – the “Dancing with Fire” hafla date has been changed to Sunday, October 5th because Weathervane Images will be featured in the Thousand Oaks Arts Council fall photography exhibit. The gallery opening will be on Saturday, October 4th (we invite you to come!) which was the original date of the hafla. We apologize for the inconvenience and hope you’ll still be able to make it! 6:30 pm, Sunday 10/5/08, on Lesser Drive across from Newbury Park HS.
For more information on the hafla:
Dance with Fire - October 4 (a Weathervane Arts hafla)
Join us for another special Weathervane Arts event on the eve of Saturday, October 4, 2008. This will be our last hafla for the year after much consideration (holidays and travel in December make it unrealistic to have one that month)
- so plan to come and be a part of the fun for one last time in '08!
This one's going to be really special... the theme is fire-dancing and I believe I have lined up Karma, Kashmir, members of She', and I hope my fellow Natarajan, Khani. I need to call up Shale from SoulTonic and beg Jenn Knott to come out for it, too as I heard they have amazing fire skills. If you or someone you know loves to play with fire and I'm not aware of it, don't be shy! This is an opportunity for fire dancer novices.
Do you need more reasons to come?
1) This time it's free!-- It will be outdoors at the Maison de Weathervane (that is to say, Lee and Georgina's house) and we intend to make it really cozy for you with chimaneas, beautiful sari fabrics abound, and as usual, yummy food and beverages.
2) Free Stuff-- The last hafla was meant to be a swapping-bellydance-stuff party but it never happened. If you've outgrown some of your bellydance clothes, bring it! If everyone brings at least one thing to swap, we'll all have a new thing to add to our wardrobe!
3) Shimmy-Off with prizes-- Again, this didn't happen at the last hafla (the music was just SOOOOOO good!) so I have two lonely prizes waiting to be whisked away by a Shimmy God or Goddess. The longest shimmy and the most fabulous shimmy wins! You know you need more excuses to practice shimmying.
4) The Weathervane mascot, Huxley can't make it to every event... but as the ruler of our house, he will be there and you can finally meet him! You can't miss him. He'll be wearing a tux.
So see you there!
~~~Thank you again to those of you who attended (or wished that they could have attended) the most recent hafla. I'm sure everyone heard that the musicians (11 in total!) rocked the house, leaving us all with dropped jaws and hankering to dance! While I'm certain that we will now and forever have a hard time topping that particular hafla, the fun mustn't stop there! :) ~~~

This is a good time for me to put out a preliminary call for FIRE dancers! Even if you're not much of a fire dancer (like me), this is an opportunity to start! So you don't necessarily need to do poi or fire sticks - but a candle dance would also be good... tell your fire-dancing friends to come and perform since I don't know who does this kind of stuff! I'll also happily take one or two non-fire performers to fill in my lineup if need be... although I hope I won't need to because all the fire dancers will be knocking at my door! Yay!

This will take place in September (date TBD - but not to conflict with Pirate Faire "aarrrgghh!")
----- so GET READY!! The location will also move outdoors (probably to my house) so that we won't risk burning EPICA down! Plan to bring your blankets, camping chairs and fire extinguishers. And drums! A drum circle would round out the evening uber-nicely.

Spread the word for me! ~ thanks, Georgina

Raffle prizes again for 5/30 hafla?

People have expressed interest once again in having a raffle at the hafla. I guess it was just so much fun the last time! ;)
So let's do it again!
Let me know if you have been crafty recently and would like to participate - remember again that the value of your prize should not exceed $30-40 lest we are unable to garner enough raffle tickets for each prize. I think I will limit it to 4 prizes this time so as to not inundate people!
Someone already plans to raffle off a tribal headpiece/band of some sort, I have a feathery hair accessory that I could throw in and I'm sure Karma and Elizabeth have some tricks up their sleeve as well!

Why this tribe?

This tribe serves to provide one, central location where people can find updates, information, post photos - all related to my hafla which takes place at EPICA studios in the Conejo Valley. Now that the intention is to hold the hafla every-other month, its' very own TRIBE became a necessity. Please invite everyone who has been to or wants to know more about this special, intimate event created to give bellydance students and amateur bellydancers the opportunity to perfom.

I called it Weathervane Arts because "Hafla - Conejo Valley tribe" and other such lackluster names sounded way too boring! Perhaps I'll change it in time when I can think of a better name). In the meanwhile, this name is the official Weathervane business name and includes Weathervane Dance (the bellydance, yang aka Georgina side) and Weathervane Images (the photography, yin, aka Lee aspect).

As this Tribe grows and develops, please send me your feedback to make it better.
Warmly,
Georgina

The next hafla date is set and is changed from my previous event announcement. it will be May 30! ***Please note this hafla is on a Friday due to the overwhelming number of weekend events in May and June.*** :)

Location: Newbury Park, EPICA studios
Admission = $8

Calling performers, musicians, and volunteers! Please contact me if you are interested in participating - the magic number of performances seems to be 7 so please let me know soon! This will be the 3rd Weathervane Arts hafla and we hope it will be as much of a smashing success as the first two... although I cannot promise raffle prizes this time, I plan to deliver something equally as wonderful and enticing (besides the food, amazing dancers, awesome company, etc, etc.)!

See you there!

Bellydance classes offered by Georgina of Weathervane Arts (at EPICA, of course!)

Join me for two nights of rigourous bellydancing at Epica studios...

Mondays nights from 5:30-6:30 pm
~ Bellydance Basics ~
This class teaches a basic vocabulary of bellydance moves that can be used a building block for cabaret or tribal-style bellydance. In addition to learning isolations and undulations, you'll also learn correct arm positions, various walks and turns, and short, but achievable combinations and choreographies. Veil work is introduced briefly in this class. Through the use of drills and review exercises, you will find this class is a good workout and overal introduction to bellydancing.

Thursday nights from 5:45-6:30 pm
~ Intermediate-level Bellydance with an emphasis on choreography ~
Building on the basics introduced in the "Basics" class, this one-hour class blends moves, walks, and turns with expression and finesse as you learn longer choreographies for performance. Students in this class look forward to performing in my bi-monthly haflas! I often play the doumbek so my students can drill their moves, both choregraphed and improvised, to various rhythms.

15% and 25% discounts offered (depending on how many classes you prepay for) from the usual $12/class drop-in fee.

Join me for fun, expression, fitness, and exploration - all through bellydance!

Next halfa - Friday May 16 or May 30?

Despite my attempts to figure out what is happening in May, I'm only one person so I need your feedback!
First off, I think a Friday is better than a Saturday this particular month because of the number of out-of-town events going on, plus the major holiday.

So I have narrowed it down to two Fridays: May 16th or May 30th..... does anyone have any thoughts, issues, complaints or know something that I don't know that might conflict with either of these dates? I was thinking the 30th would be better because that buys me more time to get my shit together (!), but then again would everyone be too tired from the previous weekend's events (Lightning) or the entire month in general to attend?

While we're on it, does anyone know of anything that would conflict with an August hafla on either the 23rd or 30th (both Saturdays)?

Please reply to this post so that I can sooner decide which date to pick and get it on the saturated May calendar of bellydance events! Thx!
luv,
Gigi

Someone left behind a wrap-around black/dark grey jacket thingy in the lounge area where all the food was. It seems to be a fleece-like material but softer than fleece. It has no ornament, pattern, or significant decoration to it... It looks really warm and comfy! Please let me know if it belongs to you or someone you know.
