BENTONVILLE, Ark. - An inmate awaiting trial on a murder charge is suing the county, complaining he has lost more than 100 pounds because of the jailhouse menu.
Broderick Lloyd Laswell says he isn't happy that he's down to 308 pounds after eight months in the Benton County jail. He has filed a federal lawsuit complaining the jail doesn't provide inmates with enough food.
According to the suit, Laswell weighed 413 pounds when he was jailed in September. Police say he and a co-defendant fatally beat and stabbed a man, then set his home on fire.
"On several occasions I have started to do some exercising and my vision went blurry and I felt like I was going to pass out," Laswell wrote in his complaint. "About an hour after each meal my stomach starts to hurt and growl. I feel hungry again."
But Laswell then goes on to complain that he undertakes little vigorous activity.
"If we are in a small pod all day (and) do next to nothing for physical exercise, we should not lose weight," the suit says. "The only reason we lost weight in here is because we are literally being starved to death."
The suit also asks that the county be ordered to serve hot meals. The jail has served only cold food for years.
The meals, provided through Aramark Correctional Institution Services, average 3,000 calories a day, jail Capt. Hunter Petray told The Morning News of northwest Arkansas for a story Saturday.
A typical Western diet consists of 2,000 to 3,000 calories a day.
Laswell's suit was filed without a lawyer in U.S. District Court in Fayetteville.

Re: 300-pound inmate complains Ark. jail doesn't feed him well
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 12:35 AMGreat question, Chum ...
I understand not wanting to be locked up, but he had a choice between committing the crime and not committing the crime. If he didn't commit the crime, he can write all this stuff down to use as material to sue them later for false imprisonment. If he did commit the crime, he should think of his "lack of food" as part of his punishment. Besides ... 3,000 calories a day is enough to make most people (myself included) gain weight. -

Tue, April 29, 2008 - 7:33 AMOh dear lord, this is exactly the kind of shit we need to stop doing.. sueing whenever it's possible. It may seem cruel, but this guy should have no rights. He's in jail.. he should not be getting the option to whine.
and who are these freakin lawyers?? -

Re: 300-pound inmate complains Ark. jail doesn't feed him well
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 9:04 AMYes, he's in jail ... but even if he did commit a crime, he still has some rights. He's still a human being (he may be disgusting or have committed a heinous act but he's still human). For instance, the Constitution guarantees a person freedom from cruel and unusual punishment. To me, this would be locking a person up and not feeding them at all (or allowing anyone to bring them any food).
If inmates lose all their rights, how long until ours are gone, too? All they'd have to do is say "if you don't do this or that, you're going to jail" ... so a person either does what they want or they go to jail ... either way, a person would have no rights. The only difference is that if they go to jail, there would be a bunch of people saying they should have no rights and/or kill them all.

Tue, April 29, 2008 - 9:22 AM> Besides ... 3,000 calories a day
That's the clincher.
Of course, one should look at the other inmates to see if they too are loosing weight drastically. But then, that's not quite how the legal system works.

Re: 300-pound inmate complains Ark. jail doesn't feed him well
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 11:06 AMwhat I meant Oneflirter, is that they should not have rights as far as T.V., picking what they want to eat, etc.
Of course they should be fed properly. But torrid makes a great point, is everybody else losing, or just big boy?? -

Re: 300-pound inmate complains Ark. jail doesn't feed him well
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 11:20 AMYou're right, SN ... as is Torroid .... if everyone in the place is losing weight, something is wrong. If it's just the biggest guy in the place, chances are good he's just getting less food than he's accustomed to getting. He'll only lose to a certain point and then he'll stop ... until and unless he starts doing some exercise or something. This is true even if he's only getting 1200 calories a day.
I know a few people (myself included) who would like to lose 100 pounds. I (and I'm sure everyone else, too) don't want to get sick or locked up to do it. Who knows .... but maybe he'd complain if they gave him access to all the food he wanted and he went up to 800 pounds??
There was a story in my local paper a few years ago about a guy who was sentenced to 60 years (or so) in jail for leading police on a high speed chase that ended in an accident and 3 dead people (passengers in his car ... he was the driver). He wanted to get out of jail because he "didn't have access to enough exercise" and he was now "morbidly obese". Maybe they can switch jails? :) -

Re: 300-pound inmate complains Ark. jail doesn't feed him well
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 11:26 AM> If it's just the biggest guy in the place ...
... then wouldn't you think he can get as much food as he wants? It's just that the other inmates start starving. Which leads to more lawsuits, and more lawyers.
[Disclaimer] A good friend and another good friend's wife are lawyers, so I'm making snide comments about my friends behind their back. (They do too, but that's a different point.) If they ever find out, I think they are gonna .... sue me. -
