Missy's High Sierra CampaBarbara jersey

Hi all, some of you know me, many others don't. My name is Ted and I am a Missy fan. I didn't know her as well or as long as probably most here, so I have been on this Tribe for months but have never posted, just read and remembered and smiled. But Missy definitely touched my life, however briefly -- I will reply to this message with a copy of an e-mail from January with my Missy story.

But this post is to share a story about our High Sierra tribute to Missy. I am a member of a big group that camps together at High Sierra every year, CampaBarbara, mostly Santa Barbara people or those with roots there (my wife Mia and I live in the Bay Area but attended UCSB way back when). A bunch of other CampaBarbarans (Campa Barbarians?) are in this tribe, at a glance I see Brandi, Sweet P, Craig, Stobi, DirtGirl, Kabir, Melissa, among I'm sure others. And I know many CBers knew and had been touched by Missy.

This year CampaBarbara came to High Sierra as a crazy basketball team, our camp was decorated with a basketball floor and a scoreboard and an arcade-style pop-a-shot game, and most of us were decked out in CampaBarbara jerseys, over 75 of us in total. The jerseys had a CB logo on the front, and each person chose a name and number to go on the back.

We also had various extra jerseys made, including several to hang from the camp rafters honoring veteran CBers who couldn't attend this year, and late rock icons (e.g. "J. Garcia" and "Hendrix"). As part of this tribute, we created a jersey for Missy:

MISSY B.
1

The Missy jersey hung prominently from the CampaBarbara bar throughout the festival. With one exception -- during the ALO late night show, "The ALOlympics," a bunch of camp flags were raised to the rafters as part of the Olympics ceremony, and the Missy B jersey went up with them, hanging above the crowd and the band for the whole show.

The following link includes 3 pictures -- 1 group shot of most of CampaBarbara in jerseys, 1 close up with Sweet P in the middle smiling (I'm on the right with red glasses), and a smaller group shot taken Monday morning, as we packed out, with about 1/3 of our camp and the Missy jersey -- Sweet P is holding it. Click here, then "View Pictures":

I also posted the one with the Missy jersey on this tribe's photo page.

So, I hope everyone enjoys the photos, and the story.

And Momma Baron -- I have the jersey here in my office and would like to send it to you please. Can you contact me directly, either via tribe or at tedandmiap@comcast.net, with a mailing address?

Q-4 forever and always

ted :)

In January, when the news spread and came to me via the ALO list, I posted the following:

    ******
Wanted to share a quick Missy story -- I didn't know her that well but have fond memories. I met Missy last summer, at the New Monsoon/ALO shows in San Francisco, and immediately found her to be a sweetheart....she had helped organize the NM party bus to the shows, and had posted a few times on the alomusic group about it. So when we arrived on night 2, and the bus was there out front with a bunch of NM fans, out in line I asked "where is Missy Baron?" Turns out she was a few people ahead in line, I introduced myself and my wife Mia, hugs all around, and we got to talking. She almost immediately asked, "do you and Mia want to be honorary members of Quadrant 4?", and others around her said "yeah!" We had no idea what this meant, but it seemed to be good fun, and maybe have something to do with dividing up the party bus group for a contest or something (?), so of course we said "yeah!" She introduced us to other members of Quadrant 4, and we started calling it Q-4 and saying "Q-4 rocks" and such. While still in line, I made up a "Q-4" hand signal, and we spent all night giving the Q-4 sign to eachother and laughing.

In fact, you can hear a Q-4 reference on the recording of the ALO portion of the show (www.archive.org/audio/etre...ails-db.php in the first track called "Intro"...I just checked, at about 1:04 into the track, as the band is getting ready to start, you hear a woman who I assume must be Missy yell "Quadrant 4 rules!" Zach of ALO says into the mike, "Quadra 4 rules??"

After the show, I wrote a little review and posted it on alomusic, mentioning Missy as the "NM fan" who organized the party bus. She wrote back to me and said she was not "just" an NM fan, but also a longtime ALO fan....so of course in good fun from then on I referred to her simply as "NM Fan."

We traded a few more e-mails over the months, and I saw her a few more times, High Sierra and other places, always smiles and a hug and a Q-4 hand sign.

When I got her e-mail a few days ago about leaving for Georgia, I responded with this:

    ******************
    Q-4 ROCKS
    forever and always

safe travels NM fan, see you next time!

    ted :)
    *****************

    ....tears in my eyes.....

RIP Missy, thanks for touching my life, however briefly.

And everyone else, it seems life is short and fragile.....hug the people you love and tell them you love them.

    ted :)

hey Bret, were you part of Q4? I still don't know, did it refer to a quadrant of the bus that you guys rode to the show in?

btw, I almost made the number of Missy's jersey "Q4", but figured it was too much of an inside joke......#1 seemed more appropriate

hehehe #1 is much more appropriate.

Yes, first it was "Front of the bus sucks!!" "Oh YEAH?!?!? We say back of the bus sucks!!!" "Hey back of the bus, did you hear what the front of the bus just said about your mother??"

And then it evolved into "Left side of the bus sucks!!" "No way, right side of the bus is lame and smells funny"

(On the way home we were going over The Bay Bridge and all was quiet, and I said "Now, ladies and gentlemen, if you look to your left, you'll see the side of the bus that SUCKS!!")

And then we divided it further, into quadrants. Q-4 is back right. And it rules.

I was in Switzerland so was neutral on the whole thing. I will say Q4 definitely had a lot of spirit that night! and with Missy in that section that is no surprise :-)

that was a fun bus ride.....on the way home Missy and I sang HBR's song I've Let Go to the entire bus (or atleast to eachother!) and that is one of my very favorite Missy memories.

              Damn I miss that girl

I remember walking by CampaBarbara as it was in full party swing on Friday afternoon... I stood in the walkway checking it out and then looked up to see MissyB 1 hanging above the camp... I got a sweet chill through my body as I always do when Missy is near... thanks CampaBarbara for honoring our much missed friend!
