UC DAVIS WASTE PREVENTION AND RECYCLING POLICY

Hey Folks,

SO I just received a draft copy of this Vice Chancellor's Policy for sustainability and under section 2.0 it reads "...new catering or food service contracts can include an option for reusable plastic or ceramic mugs and reusable silverware/dinnerware..." It is in the UC Davis long term sustainability plan to support WERC

  • Can you post this document? If this provision makes it into the final copy, we really should have a talk with the people in charge about using and funding our program to make such contracts possible. It would also make that year-round director position more plausible.

I think it would be important for WEF people to retain control over WERC because we can't be sure that the University will keep fees fair, treat clients justly, and keep -all- of our practices as consistent with environmental sustainability as possible. There is also the question of whether University support would be contingent on altering practices which are important to us. However if these concerns can be assuaged, official University support for WERC would be a great help to the program, and more importantly it would give the idea of reusability and sustainability a substantial boost in credibility at other Universities and enterprises.
    • I don't think that WEF should assume responsibility for reusable dishes all over campus. WEF is three days in May and the whole campus is a big, big job.

WEF recycling >> Project Recycle >> R-4 is a model of how WEF can influance campus policy. Far fewer cans would be recycled if R-4 were run by WEFies.

I think that the dishes are at the point were a seperate non-WEF student group will take over the dishes, focus on that, making less of a headache for that three day event.
