Camp Fareta -- group rates, work-exchange, Paypal, and June 23 deadline!

hey there, dancers and drummers -

Remember, Camp Fareta is coming up soon -- July 6-13 in central California -- with an amazing line-up of master drummers and dancers from Guinea, Senegal, and Mali, hosted by Youssouf Koumbassa. There are work-exchange opportunities, group rates if you get together a group of eight or more from your area (or your Tribe!), and you can pay by Paypal. Prices go up after June 23, so now is the time to register.

Check http://dancingvillage.com/ for all the details, including a registration form and lots of photos from the last two years. The vibe is sweet and harmonious, there will be a delicious international menu prepared by a former Esalen chef, including some African meals, and the location, near Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks, is beautiful. It's an amazing opportunity for a West African immersion without leaving the States. We hope you'll join us!

peace,
CAMP FARETA West African Drum and Dance Camp in Central California -- early reg ends May 1 !

Greetings, Drummers and Dancers --

Camp Fareta, a West African drum and dance camp in central California, will be happening July 6-13, and the early registration rates end May 1, so now's the time to register!

There will be an amazing crew of artists from Guinea, Senegal, and Mali, two drum classes and three dance classes a day, fire circles at night, an amazing chef from Esalen, a kids' program for the young ones, work-exchange opportunities, and a friendly village atmosphere, all in a beautiful location with a lake for swimming, canoeing, or just a quick dip after class.

Camp Fareta is hosted by Youssouf Koumbassa, a master dancer, choreographer, and teacher from Guinea, West Africa. The other artists who will be in residence include:

Drummers: M'Bemba Bangoura, Fode Bangoura, Mangue Sylla, Bolokada Conde, Wadaba Kourouma, Karamba Dioubate, Amadou Camara, Moussa Traore, Cheikh M'Baye, and Lansana Kouyate (balafon)

Dancers: Abdoulaye Sylla, Moustapha Bangoura, Alseny Soumah, Mariama Camara, M'Mah Toure, Marietou Sano, Djeneba Sako, Babacar M'Baye, and Mariama Basse (Unfortunately Marie Basse-Wiles is unable to attend because she will be in Senegal.)

So check it out at dancingvillage.com, where you'll find lots of photos from previous camps, plenty of information, and a registration form to download and fill out. If you're not ready to commit yet, that's okay too -- it's still early and there's plenty of space. You can write back on Tribe or email campfareta@yahoo.com if you have questions.

We hope to see you there!

peace,

christina

p.s. Also check Youssouf's website, westafricandance.com, for information about his next trip to Guinee!
More news on Camp Fareta -- dundun dance, balafon, Paypal

hey there, dancers and drummers --

Here are a few more pieces of information for you, in case you're still thinking of signing up for Camp Fareta in California, July 8-15, but haven't done so yet, or you're already signed up and want to get even more excited!

First, due to popular demand, we will have 2 dundun dance classes at camp, one with Mariama and one with Nima or M'Mah. One will occur earlier in the week and one will be later in the week.

Also Lansana will be available for balafon lessons. If we get enough people who want to study with him, we will offer the classes for free; otherwise they will be available for a separate fee. So let us know if that's something that interests you.

We also want to let you know that you can pay for camp with a credit card via Paypal. Just let us know if you'd like to use that option and we'll hook you up.

And a clarification -- the "regular" rates (not the early rates) for camp have been extended to July 2. That means the price is still $750 for the week or $120 a day. After July 2, we will be in the "late registration" category, with an extra $20 added on to each individual or family/group.

Check dancingvillage.com for lots of photos from last year's camp and a registration form for this year. We're looking forward to a great camp and we hope to see you there!

be well -

Hey there, lovers of West African drum and dance --

We just heard that Tambacounda will not be happening this summer, so in case some of you were planning to go to that camp, we're extending the early (cheaper) rates for Camp Fareta until May 22, to give you some time to think about joining us this summer at Youssouf Koumbassa's camp in California, July 8-15.

Check Youssouf's website for lots of details, including pricing and registration info, or write to campfareta@yahoo.com if you have specific questions.

hey there, drummers and dancers --

We're setting up group rates for adults who come to the full week of Camp Fareta...take $35 off each if you register with 8 folks from your "area" -- such as the Bay area, Santa Cruz, Los Angeles, San Diego, Sebastopol/Mendocino, Garberville/Arcata, etc. etc.

Rates go up May 15, so now's a good time to start making plans to be at camp! You can check Youssouf's website for lots of info about fees, work-exchange, and all that -- westafricandance.com.

It was great last year (great teachers and classes, incredible food, beautiful weather, friendly vibe) and will probably be even better this year -- we hope to see you there!

Marimba in Sacramento

I'm searching for other marimba players (the Shona instrument, not the concert marimba/South American marimba) in the Sacramento region. I played for seven years in middle and high school, including in a professional group, and now that I'm away from that part of the world (Pac Northwest) I'm feeling rather lonely and displaced. There's no such thing as a solo marimba player, and I'd LOVE to meet other people who share my passion for the big wooden keyboard.

I've tried contacting the music departments at local schools, and even met up with the leader of the World Music group at Sac City, but so far I haven't turned anything up.

Hi,
My name is K-Lee and i was first turned on to West African dance styles by my ol cronies Domba. I thought i could never do "that" myself.
that was years ago.
this year i went to dance & music camp (Kosmos). i took classes with Naby and Karamba both masters at this style of dance and music.
i had a "moment" if you will. my girls laughed at me when i described it like this:
"i felt like my heart opened up and a million smiles flew out all over the room."
i am now borderline obsessed and am investigating local classes, stuff online and music. our musicians are very very happy considering this is the main style they play.
my name is k-lee and i'm a WADance & Music addict now. i want to drop into happy seizures each time i hear it. i want to shake my ass, ruffle my "feathers" and jump around like a kid.
