The bark, berries, leaves and flowers of the elderberry shrub/tree all have food and medicinal value. I planted two of these in my yard this spring. I obtained them from St. Lawrence Nurseries www.sln.potsdam.ny.us/ Where they grow cold hardy plants. The elderberry plants I got from a more common & commercial gardening catalog were flimsy and did not survive.
