Could $4.00 a gallon gas be a solution in Disguise?
topic posted Thu, May 22, 2008 - 6:26 AM by Mike
Since gas and diesel has risen so high in the past few months, I am reading more and more about individuals and communitys coming up with innovative new ways to combat this problem. Our local farm supply can't keep up with the demand for pellet stoves and furnaces. More and more farmers are switching to teams of horses. The saddle horse industry around here has fallen, but the draught horse industry is growing. Our farmers market here is bigger than I have ever seen it. Big diesel pickups are getting hard to sell, but the small 4 cylinder ones are flying off the lots, people are dusting off their Geo's and Festivas and driving them. Talking to my neighbors, almost all are limiting their trips into town to once a week. I am seeing home gardens were there were'nt any before. I think this can only be a good thing.
I am not where I want to be energy wise, but I am working a little faster to gain energy independance.

There is a discussion on another tribe that seems closely related. I cut and pasted part of an entry from White Wolf:
"2). How do we manage the Changes in a less dramatic way ?
Preparation. We may not be able to prepare for every contingency, but preparation for as many as we can limits the chaos in the aftermath of a catastrophe. The thing is that we have to remain calm and be realistic. We have to remember that people hundreds of years ago survived without electricity, without TV, without radio, without Internet, gasp!, I know, hard to imagine that one. If they didn't, we would not be here. They moved about and upon entering a new bioregion, learned from that region how to survive. They found the plants, the berries, the game. The Lakota didn't always have horses. Yet, when horses came into their bioregion, or was it the other way around, anyway, they adapted their lifestyle. This is the same thing we will do. So what if we have to go without a meal or two. We probably need to given our society today. The key is not to panic no matter what. Adapt to the changes."

What are you planting?

I share a quote from Food Not Lawns by H.C. Flores:
"Whether you live in an apartment , in the suburbs, on a farm or anywhere inbetween, growing food is the first step toward a healthier more self-reliant, and ultimately more ecologically sane life. Gardening may seem like just a hobby to many people, but in fact growing food is one of the most radical things you can do: Those who control our food control our lives, and when we take that control back into our own hands, we empower ourselves toward automonmy, self reliance and true freedom." So plant something. Just jump right in. You dont have to start with a whole garden, but do start. And reply back to share what you are planting this year.

Bright Blessings!
I thought up this idea and shared it with friends who thought it was a great idea, so I'm running with it.
It's like this. We will collect up names & numbers of peoples wanting to hear about it when someone decides to spontaneously hold a drum circle at their house, a park a campsite or whatever...
It will be spontaneous, so people might have other stuff they are doing and not be able or interested in attending, but the list will be large enough (lets hold this intention) so that an acceptable number of drummies and dancers can get together and have some fun, and really bring the community together.

For my part I am actually creating a circular space in my yard for this purpose. And I now have an above ground fire pit to plunk in the center of it. My home is centrally located and the yard is enclosed in a 6 ft tall privacy fence. There is additional parking possible at the Episcopal Church on my block, I'm going to ask them about use of it.

I'm setting myself up as a list organizer, and would like to know if someone else would like to co-organize. As a "list organizer" we would maintain the list. Any one on the list could host and call an event, but they would first contact an organizer to get the current list. People not signed up would contact a list organizer to get added to the list. I'd like to reach out beyond SCA and Mirage and reach the community. I know there are more of "us" out there.

So if you want to join send me your name, phone number, if you can accept text messaging at that number, and if you are a drummer or dancer or both. Yay. I love this!!!

Blessed Bees!!!!

Peace cannot be gained by force

Peace keeping troops. What kind of fucked up concept is that? Military might can bring quiet by fear and submission but that is NOT Peace.

Peace is an easy, happy flow of rightness.

What of using force to "protect" oneself & one's loved ones? I think something is wrong with that too. It's hard to admit, but look at it. Think about it. Is something that is wrong right in certain situations? If so who decides where the line is drawn? Isn't that part of the trouble? Everyone things they are the authority on where that line is, then there is conflict about that.

I don't know... I'm throwing around some ideas here that I'm not sure I have adequately articulated.

Jump in and lets talk about it

A Message (Supposedly) From the Hopi Elders
You have been telling the people that this is the Eleventh Hour.
Now you must go back and tell the people that this is The Hour.

Here are the things that must be considered:

Where are you living?
What are you doing?
What are your relationships?
Are you in right relation?
Where is your water?
Know our garden.
It is time to speak your Truth.
Create your community.
Be good to each other.
And do not look outside yourself for the leader.

This could be a good time!

There is a river flowing now very fast.
It is so great and swift that there are those who will be afraid.
They will try to hold on to the shore.
They will feel like they are being torn apart, and they will suffer greatly.

Know the river has its destination.
The elders say we must let go of the shore, push off toward the middle of
the river,
keep our eyes open, and our heads above the water.

See who is there with you and celebrate.

At this time in history, we are to take nothing personally, least of all
ourselves!
For the moment we do, our spiritual growth and journey comes to a halt.

The time of the lone wolf is over.
Gather yourselves!

Banish the word struggle from your attitude and vocabulary.

All that we do now must be done in a sacred manner and in celebration.

We are the ones we have been waiting for.

The Yuonihan Project was developed by and for Nothern Plains American Indians. Yuonihan means "respect" or "to honor" in the Lakota language. Traditional values emphasize honoring and respecting children and pregnant women. Yuonihan Project was formed to educate women of a child bearing age and to prevent Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASDs). I am a contact person for this program in my community.

If you are a woman who is concerned about your drinking, even if you are not pregnant, or if you'd like information on helping a woman you know please call the Yuonihan Helpline toll free at 1-888-276-7207. You can also visit the website at http://usd.edu/cd/yuonihan

Adopt a Buffalo

Help return the legacy of the Buffalo to the Oglala Lakota People while supporting self-sufficiency and sustainable development! Before the great north american buffalo herds were nearly hunted to extinction 100 years ago, they were an integral part of the Lakota way of life. Not only did they provide a steady source meat, clothing, shelter, and tools, they also occupied a important position in the Lakota religion.

"The buffalo was the primary source of survival, both physical and spiritual. The buffalo provided food, clothing, shelter, a purpose to their existence and a sacred object of reverence." - Powers 1986

For a small donation you can give the gift of life and culture to a Lakota family. This gift helps Lakota families achieve their vision for the future - utilizing their remaining land-base.
