When the weather is cold..
You know those days when look outside first thing in the morning
see the snow falling and get the urge to warm up the house
by baking or cooking... ?

...What do you cook?

I always get the urge to make chili..
the kind with beans and tomatoes
and hamburger and cumin...

and corn bread... yum!

Anni's Chili Con Carne:

brown 1 lb of hamburger
adding salt, garlic salt
& finely diced onion,
as it browns.

(if you like it hot:
add some finely diced jalepenos
to the hamburger while its browning)

When the hamburger is browned
place it in a crock pot & add:

2 cans pinto beans (juice and all)
1 can kidney beans (juice and all)
spices (see below)
1 large can diced tomatoes (juice and all)
fill empty tomatoe can with water and add that too
if it looks like ya still need more juice add a little water
as it cooks...

spices:
chili pique (crushed dried chilies)
cumin (to taste)
salt (to taste)
dash of ground celery seed

Slow cook all day :0)

    kuner's chili beans
    dark red kidney beans
    small red beans
    small can stewed tomatoes

    chili powder
    crushed red pepper
    cumin
    salt
    pepper
    water

    cook all day

eat whatever's left by by dinner time with some corn bread or tortillas or tortilla chips

I gave up on hot dogs for a long time. I got some chicken hot dogs recently and they give me a healthy full I wasn't used to. I like to cook a can of vegetarian chili and slice a few dogs up to mix in. Seems like good cold weather food.

Chili with hot dogs... I bet that would be a winner with the kids :0)

surprisingly...Ian does not like chili dogs!! he will force himself to eat the hot dog really quick and then pig out on chili fries!!

That is so odd. Kids are weird, aren't they. They like this with this - but hate it with that.... Seems like if they like chilifries, and they like hot dogs, they'd like chilidogs. AH well.

Reminds me of the tomato soup commercial where every kid has to have it made differently....

Mmmmmm. Cream of tomato soup and grilled cheese.... I haven't had that in a long time. Sounds good. That is a 20 minutes recipe!!! :-)

omg Jenny... I have food allergies from h*ll..
haven't been able to have any milk or bread or cheese... (ha! and that's just the tip of the iceburg...) for years ...
I still dream of grilled cheese and cream of tomato soup ::drool::
I grew up on the stuff...
ick... don't get me started on how nasty tomato soup is when made with water... blech!

grilled cheese... ever notice how it tastes better when cut right? lol!
I preferred it cut corner to corner... ;p
but I know people who say it ain't right unless its just cut in half the straight way... ::giggling::

SORRY! I did not know about the allergies, didn't mean to get you drooling over something you cannot have. Man, that really sucks.

I have learned I need to stay away from peanuts. That is hard enough.

I, too, hate tomato soup with water AND I, too, think the ONLY right way to cut grilled cheese is corner to corner!!!!

I am getting to the age that I need to start dealing with dietary restrictions, too. My husband has to reduce salt and I try to stick to a pre-diabetic diet with him. He has low blood sugar issues.

OOOH! This may be the perfect place to ask about this ----- anyone know what foods to stear clear of for migraines?????

don't worry about my food allergies here.. lol..
I love virtual goodies... lmao! and virtual ::drooling::
at least I can dream :0)

there's a migraine tribe around here somewhere..
I think if you look at my profile under all the tribes I belong to
                it should be there... :0)

                let's see... migraines...

                avoid MSG like the plague..
.. red meat... easy on that one...

tell ya what.. I'll add ya to my friends list and invite you into my little food allergy support group... then you can ask all the food allergy or migraine type questions you like okay?
I also have a bit of experience with diabetics... my X uses insulin daily...

but ya gotta promise not to leave this tribe ...
Lysa's my daughter.. ... can't be taking her members away now can I?

Just think - soon we will be looking for things to "cook" on a HOT day - I can't wait.

My favorite is the Key Lime pie recipe I found on the bottle of "Nellie and Joe's" brand key west lime juice. I think their Key West lime juice is the best, and their recipe is the best and easiest I have found.

If you cannot find this juice, lemme know - I'll post the recipe. You can sub in any Key West lime juice for the recipe.

well...we just try to cook outside as much as possible...and anything that can be cooked in the early hours of the day and then served cold later when it is too hot to cook or eat anything hot...or we just wait until 2am when it cools off to around 90 and cook then...no kidding...i have actually done that...got up at 2am to cook things so that the house wouldn't be 110 all day!

I like that little grill ya got outside your front door.
I want one! ... so much easier than dragging that huge
grill out in the carport out... not to mention lighting it.. ;p

mmm... maybe I'll grill today... its finaly a little warmer :0)
Wanna come over for a BBQ Lysa?
            ::ducking!::

We've used a mini habatchi (? on spelling) for years. Last year we finally broke down and got a gas grill. I plan on abusing that baby this summer!!! No doubt!

I have tried the cooking in the AM and then heating with the microwave in the evening trick. Can't say I have ever gotten up at 2 AM to cook though. I am a nightowl - so I could just stay up 'till then - but I think the clanging in the kitchen would keep my husband awake and that would be no good :-(
BUT - maybe on a weekend.... there you go!!!!

              Thank YOU! Good suggestion.

We've got a big carport that's pretty much bbq central here...
I have to garden all day (finaly warm enough to get those seeds in the ground..)
all this talk about grilling is motivating me to get the grill out and cook outside today..
almost 2pm now and the temp is 71 degrees... woohoo!! :0)

hmm.. I've got steaks... hmm... that's a start... ;p oh.. wait I have tons of hamburger...
cr@p.. no buns... oh well steaks it is ;p

                  Where you at?
I am in Indiana and we had snow this past weekend! ARGH!

tonight is the first night we can leave the already blooming plants uncovered - due to frost warnings.
                  I ain't planting yet....

I prefer warm climates and would take the 90's and even the over 100 (as long as it is a DRY 100+) over snow in mid-April!

well...here in beautiful downtown HELL i.e. Las Vegas in July when the high is usually OVER (yes i said over) 110 degrees and if you're lucky the low is 90 (at 2am) ya tend to enjoy the hell outta getting up at 2am when it is bearable...and cooking, or eating for that matter seems completely out of the question any other time of day.
