Popularity is not always good. It's not always bad either. But I've noticed that some people are so obsessed with popularity that they'll only do what's popular -- even if it's bad for them. My current way of thinking says that this does not compute. After all, you can't invent new things if you focus only on what's popular. When Edison first invented the phonograph, it was unpopular. And that was mainly because it was new at the time. Later on, it because popular and it eventually made iPods possible.
Of course the anthropologists and psychologists often say that it's part of human nature to want to follow the crowd. That may be true, but I still say that's no excuse. It's the 21st century, and the human race of today should be advanced enough to use critical thinking skills when making decisons on things. Plus in the U.S., there is a constitution that grants citizens the right to do unpopular things. But despite that, there are still those who demand that everyone do what's popular. For example, I'm not supposed to support Esperanto because it's so unpopular. Does that make sense or not?
I believe that I and all others should have a choice on the matter of popularity. I do certain popular things if I find them of interest, and I also do certain unpopular things if I find them of interest. Besides, If did only what was popular, I wouldn't be able to express my unique personality. And the fact remains that EVERYONE has a unique personality. To mandate popularity would massively contradict that unavoidable reality. But as most of us know, certain people will continue to contradict it anyway.
