I will be speaking on the morning of the Full Moon to several classes of high school seniors about Wicca. The class is comparative religion.
I am supposed to touch on the five elements of religion:
1. Concern for the Holy (deity, enlightenment, state of mind)
2. Sacred Text
3. Ritual
4. Community (leadership, place of practice, lay people)
5. Ethical code
What would you share if you had 45 minutes to talk about Wicca to young folks who, potentially, no nothing at all about it but are open to hearing about it?

Re: what would you share?
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 5:56 AMI talk some about what earth-centric means, and perhaps about how little we actually know about ancient religions. -

Re: what would you share?
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 7:13 AMI had a good talk with my co-presenter --- an 18 year old who has been actively practicing wicca for 4 years as a solitary --- and we got a pretty good sense of what to share. We both want to stress that our POV is only two, and that wicca, since it is non-dogmatic, can manifest in many fashions. The only ethical "rule" we could both agree was the idea that what you put in the world comes back to you, three-fold.

Re: what would you share?
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 7:15 AMthat would've been my recommendation right there. Sounds like it's percolating and that whatever comes out at the presentation will be just right... -

Re: what would you share?
Wed, May 21, 2008 - 12:02 PMThis is what happened...loosely ---
I started each session out with inviting them to breathe deeply, into their bellies, two or three times. I talked, just a bit, about breath as a tool of magick...
we (my copresenter and I) discussed what the words pagan, wiccan, witch and magick mean to each of us
we discussed immanence, interconnectedness and community. We talked about the use of myth---the stories of the Goddess---as channels of energy.
we talked about the basics of ritual, the significance of the circle, the possible meanings of the four quarters/elements, how these symbols create the pentacle...
we talked about the holidays, oh so briefly...
and we answered questions that were, for the most part, intelligent and good.
it went well.
