Drumming workshop

November Meeting Minutes!

Members Present: Saidah, Suzanne, Fatinah, Christina

We decided to do the beer tasting for our membership drive, to be held on December 9 at 3:00 p.m. Can be held at The Anchor because Christina’s husband has connections there. Cost will be $10-$15 per person—Christina will let us know for sure. RSVP by December 5. We will need to come up with a flyer.

We discussed moving meeting to Watermark Books, but are open to suggestions. We’re trying to find a central location. Watermark is open 8-5 Sunday, according to their website. The Wichita Area Library Association meets there and we really like it. They also give everyone a 20% off coupon for holding meetings there.

No January meeting will be held.

Jill has not set a date for Dancing for Dogs, but we assume it will be second half of February due to Muddslide?

Suzanne reported we had at least 65 paid admissions to the show.

Christina doesn’t have internet, so best way to contact her is probably via Dana.

Sale results

Thanks to everyone who helped with, or attended, our sale on the 22nd. I'd have to recheck to get the exact amount from Jill, but know that we raised over $125 for Pets in Crisis.

We also have two new members to welcome, Robin and Jesse.

It's my hope that everyone liked this sale so much that we can make it a semi-annual event.

September minutes

Minutes from September 8, 2007

1. The minutes from the August meeting were read and approved.

2. Belly Dancer’s Sale - September 22.

Vender set up will start at 10 a.m., and the doors will open to shoppers at 11:00. The sale will close at 4 p.m.

The charity for this even is Pets in Crisis, and the money raised will be split 80/20, with 80% going to the charity and 20% going to the chapter treasury.

3. Dance Party - Nov. 3

It was decided to set up at 2 p.m on the afternoon of Nov 3 and to clean up immediately after the show. It was suggested that we make a diagram of how things should be set up.

Vendors may also start setting up at 2 p.m., and the doors will open for vending at 5:30. The show will start at 7:30. There is a $25 charge for vendors. So far, Janice and Judy C. have been confirmed as vendors.

The charity for this event is the Women’s Crisis Center, and the funds raised will be split 80/20 after expenses. Christina will be the contact with the Crisis Center.

Suzanne volunteered to bring a rack for the dressing room, and Raven volunteered to bring a mirror.

Deadline to call in to Judie for a dance spot is midnight on Thursday, Oct. 18. It was decided that solos and duets will be limited to 5 minutes, and groups to 7 minutes.

Plans for this event will be finalized at the October meeting.

4. Dancing for the Dogs was mentioned as a possible spring event.

5. Christina suggested a holiday wine/beer tasting party, which could also be used as a mixer or membership drive event. This event will be discussed more at the October meeting.

6. The next meeting will be held at 3 p.m., Oct. 14.

8/12 Meeting minutes

Aug 12, 2007 Heartland Chapter MECDA Meeting

The meeting was held at 3 PM at Riverside Perk, with 5 members attending.

The nominees for officers were discussed, and how to maximize participation in the election for new officers.

A problem was identified with memberships expiring, without the members being notified that this was going to happen.

It was decided that a mail-in ballet would be sent out to all current members to get more participation in the officers’ election. We will include a date for the renewal of each addressee’s membership with the ballet, along with a flyer for the garage sale on Sept. 22nd, and a pre-addressed and stamped envelope for the ballet’s return. We would like to have the ballets returned to Raven by September 1.

The flyers for the garage sale will be distributed to the dance studios and teachers, and to SCA members. Tables will be provided, but anyone who needs a clothes rack needs to bring it.

Preliminary plans for the November dance show were discussed.

The meeting was adjourned.

Next meeting is scheduled for Sept 9h, 3 PM, at Riverside Perk.

July minutes

Minutes from July 9 meeting

1. Sale

The Heartland chapter will hold a swap/sale on Saturday, September 22, at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, 2799 South Meridian, Wichita, Kansas.

It was decided that the sale times would be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and that vendors would be able to come in to set up at 10 a.m. These times still need to be checked with St. Barts.
The admission fee for shoppers will be $5.00. The vending fee for non-MECDA members is $5.00 for people with a small amount of items who want to share a table and $10 for those who want a table and/or rack to themselves. MECDA members may vend without paying a vending fee.

For anyone who joins MECDA at time of the sale, all vending and/or admission fees will be waived.

It was suggest that if vendors are giving discounts to MECDA members, they put up a sign at their booth.

The charity for this event will be Pets in Crisis. There was some discussion of how to split the funds raised between the local chapter and our charity. Since we want to host events that will necessity having funds to cover up-front expenses, the chapter needs to maintain or increase the amount in our treasury. We need to finalize a formula to disperse the funds between the charity and the chapter. This could be by percentage or based on a straight dollar amount.

We discussed other ideas for raising funds for the chapter at the sale. One way would be to have a MECDA table where we could sell any donated items and our t-shirts, if they are ready. It was also suggested that we could sell videos from our previous events.

2. Fall Halfa

Our fall halfa will be November 3 at the Extension Center, 7001 West 21st Street North, Wichita, Kansas.

The contract has been signed and returned with a deposit, and one vendor, Judy Cunningham, has already been contacted. No vending fee has been set or discussed. According to the contract, we have the building from 5 - 10 p.m. Based on the length of the set up time, and allowing time for vending, it might be necessary to see if we can start setting up a little earlier.

3. Membership Drive

It was suggested having people visit various studios to promote MECDA. A membership mixer of some kind in April was also suggested. Information can also be distributed at workshops in the area. Judie and Suzanne plan to take membership applications and information to Judy Cunningham's workshop in Sedalia.

Strange call re photo shoot-beware

I just got a really odd call from an amateur photographer wanting to book me for a photo shoot. I got suspicious because he wasn't giving me many details. I asked if it was for publication, and he says it may wind up in an art piece. That was all he would say. It could have been completely harmless, but I just got a bad vibe. Usually if people don't want to give details, there's something wrong.

He is calling bellydancers around town, so I wanted to give you guys a heads up.

Minutes from June 10th meeting

June 10, 2007 Heartland Chapter MECDA Meeting

The meeting was held at 3 PM at Riverside Perk, with 6 members attending.

Treasurer’s report: We have received $70 from National for the new members we signed up during their special membership drive period, and $10 from the video party.

Fall show: It looks like the Extension Center may be the best venue for the fall show. Dana is going to call them to try to set a definite date.

Fall sale: possible locations are the Southside Education Center, St. Bart’s Episcopal Church, and Salem U.C.C. We will firm up plans for the sale after we have the show date set.

Hosting a workshop is a project for 2008. We want to get the teacher(s) and the venue set after the fall show.

Jill suggested t-shirt sales, calendars, and a photo shoot as possible fund-raising ideas. She is checking on available existing designs from National that could be used, and has also volunteered to put a membership directory together.

Ideas were discussed for a more social type event, or a lecture on a topic that would be of interest to members.

Suzanne and Judie will try to do some networking with the Kansas City dancers, to see if some of them might be interested in joining MECDA.

Elections for officers will be held at the August meeting.

The meeting was adjourned.

Next meeting is scheduled for July 8th, 3 PM, at Riverside Perk.

I haven't heard back from national regarding using the logo. They are probably resting after Cairo Carnival. I will also check out other "print on demand" places to see what we can get. I know that with the Lions Club they usually just want to approve the artwork to make sure we aren't stepping out of bounds. We also could use the words without the logo without asking - so I will play with that a bit as well. I love love love having a few days off!!

A message from MECDA's Central Board

A letter was mailed to MECDA members from a "Concerned Committee." This is our response which will be sent to All Mecda Members who have given us their email addresses.

MECDA was formed as an organization to improve wages and conditions for Bellydancers. We have accomplished that - and we have moved on to become a needed communications organization to provide unity and service to all dance communities throughout the United States.

As to our finances: We have a direct connection between receipts and 1099's to all payments, which are made by check; we have no credit cards. There is no money missing from MECDA.

We did pay a penalty to the IRS for one year when Treasurers were changing offices, and our statement was late. This was years ago, and it was not a big issue: Once in 30 years is a great record.

We have about 20 individuals working in the Central Board and the Cairo Carnivale. For them to receive an average of $1,300 a year means about $100 a month. This may not even account for the gas money they spend to do their job.

Officer qualifications change according to what computer skills are available for them to do their jobs in the best and easiest manner.
If an individual on the Board does not perform competently, they are replaced.

We had a request to sub out our 'treasurer' position to an accountant. He would only enter our materials into "Quicken," no judgement of the appropriateness of the invoice, no response to members, no attendance at meetings. Data entry is only a small part of what the MECDA Treasurer does. He was not useful to us.

Obviously, all MECDA members are valued and treated equally. Each MECDA member pays a maximum of $50 to join - they receive $74.00 worth of publications (Chronicles, Happenings, Directory) in return, as well as discounts on events and products. We make up for the difference between this amount and your membership fee from revenue generated by the Cairo Carnivale.

The individuals who sent you that letter didn't even trust you to vote the way they want even after reading their distortions and lies.They expect you to send them your blank ballot with the required envelope to them - so they can vote instead of you!

The current MECDA Board has worked very hard to accomplish communications, events, and services for members across the country.

FYI:

MECDA'S CODE OF CONDUCT includes the following: "Personal information obtained in private will be respected as such. Members will not repeat gossip that could be detrimental to the welfare and happiness of others."

AND Furthermore:

Article IX of the MECDA Bylaws states: "Names, addresses, phone numbers and other pertinent information of and about MECDA members will be kept in confidence by the officers so entrusted for the sole reason of conducting MECDA affairs, and will not be released without permission of the specific member(s) involved."

It is unknown at this time who provided the confidential names and addresses of MECDA's membership, but this situation is currently under investigation. If the person(s) involved in releasing the confidential information are discovered, pertinent action will be taken.

Please contact all members in your chapters and all of your MECDA friends and encourage them to send in their OWN ballots!

My precious baby just died in my arms after having an allergic reaction to an immunization. And after the vet sent her home telling me everything would be fine, and that she would be ok. I didn't have time to get her to the emergency vet.

I am completely devastated, having lost my beloved dog I've had since high school a week ago. Now this. I know I should be thankful for the four years I had with her. Even though she was a royal pain, she was the closest thing I ever had to a child and I loved that cat more than anything else.

Please hug your furry little babies tonight and appreciate every minute you have with them.

April Meeting Minutes

Apr 8, 2007 Heartland Chapter MECDA Meeting

The meeting was held at 3 PM at Suzanne’s house, with 10 members and guests attending.

The video party is scheduled for Sunday, May 6th at 3:00 PM in Jabara Hall at Wichita State University. We should have the flyers available electronically for members to distribute sometime this week. Members get in free, but are asked to bring snacks and any videos that they have that might be good to see. Non-members are asked to make a $2.50 donation.
The following people volunteered to bring these items:
Judie – ice
Suzanne - pop corn bags and soda
Jill – pop corn and soda
Marisa – napkins and forks
Melody – cups and napkins
Dana – table cloth

Tentative dates were set for a fall show on October 13th, and a possible swap and shop sale on September 15th or 22nd.
Several ideas were discussed for venues. Marisa is checking for more information with the Wichita Community Theater, Dana is checking with the Extension Center, and Amy is checking with her friends about using their building for the sale.

We would like to encourage some networking with Kansas City dancers, since they don’t have a chapter in their area. Inanna from Kansas City is sponsoring a summer bellydance camp, and several members indicated interest in getting more information about this event.

The meeting was adjourned.

There will be no meeting in May due to the video party. Next meeting is scheduled for June 10th, 3 PM, at Riverside Perk.

For Sale. . .Plus Size Bra/Belt

I have a Bra and Belt that I purchased on EBAY that does not quite fit. It is a homemade item that is very intricate, and needs some MINOR adjustments. Furthermore, it is PLUS SIZE. . . I would guess about 38-40 D-DD. As I am a DDD, it is difficult to fit. It was made from a Lane Bryant brassiere. Dark Blue with some purple. Lots of spangles! $80.

March 11th Meeting Minutes

Mar 11th Heartland Chapter MECDA Meeting

The meeting was held at 3 PM at Riverside Perk, with 4 members attending.

The next MECDA event will be a video party, with tentative date set for May 6th. Marisa will check with Glen to make sure the room is available. All members are asked to give their suggestions on what videos, performers, etc. they would like to see at this event. Like the last party, members will get in free.

The next show date will be sometime in the fall, possibly September. All members are asked to check on any possible venues that would be appropriate and affordable for this event. Please bring any suggestions you have to the next meeting, or send them to any of the officers.

If both of these events go well, the chapter may want to sponsor their first seminar in 2008.

A suggestion for a fund raising event would be a photo session, where dancers could be photographed and receive the photos so they can use them for PR purposes. Another idea was to use some of the photos to make a MECDA calendar, with a local dancer featured every month.

The meeting was adjourned.

The next meeting is scheduled for April 8th, same time and place.

Reminder - Bellydance Bazaar THIS Saturday!

Just a quick reminder...

The Bazaar is THIS Saturday, 3/31/07!

Location: Cowley College, (East entrance-Seminar Room)
4501 E. 47th St. So. <47th and Oliver>
Time: 11am-3pm
(Those with a bunch to set up can do so at 10am. There will be tables galore, but I don't have any racks! Any that you can bring would be appreciated!)

Admission: $5 for vendors, $2.50 if you're just shopping (Proceeds will go to the KS Humane Society)

There will be snacks, drinks, and door prizes...as usual!

A couple of things: 1) Suzanne will not be having HER swap/shop/seminar this summer, so if you have unwanted BD items this is the time to bring them out and send them happily to a new home! 2) Jasmine and Lena from the BigBadBaghdadBand have made 100's of harem pants and vests and will have them for sale! Get your RennFaire garb!!!

Bellydance Bazaar - NEW DATE!!

The Bellydance Bazaar will happen!!!

I resheduled for Saturday, 3/31. It's at a different location, though, it's now in the Seminar Room at Cowley College (Southside Education Center) 4501 E. 47th St. South. Please use the entrance on the EAST side of the building and follow the signs to the room, which is located in the SE corner of the facility. Please be aware that there will be a few classes in session, so keep the noise level down until you get in the Seminar Room!!

If you are vending a bunch of items, you may set up beginning at 10am. If you're just shopping, you may enter at 11am. We will have the room until 3pm. We have to be out of there by 3:30, so shopping will STOP at 3:00 and clean-up will begin...and any volunteers are very much appreciated! :-)

Admission is $5 for vendors and $2.50 for shoppers. Proceeds will go to the Kansas Humane Society. There will be snacks and non-alcholic drinks, and ..... DOORPRIZES!!! The Sisters of Salome will also be performing during the day for your viewing pleasure!!

Be sure to attend to pick up those "last minute" costumes/costume items for the upcoming Ren Faire!!

Meeting Minutes

Feb 11th Heartland Chapter MECDA Meeting

The meeting was held at 3 PM at Riverside Perk, with 5 members attending.

Jill gave a report on the Dancing for the Dogs Benefit Show. We had 19 dancers participating in the show, there were a total of 48 people there, and we have $300 to donate to Pets in Crisis. We also had 4 new members sign up, and additional people who expressed interest and took information. We would like to thank everyone who helped in making this event a success.

A discussion was held about other events that we would like to sponsor or participate in. Suggestions were given for another video party, another benefit show, dancing in the International Festival at WSU, and sponsoring a seminar. All members have been given the assignment to think of possible venues that would be appropriate and affordable to use for these events. When we find an available venue, then we can decide what type of event we want to do and set a definite date. Suggestions were for a spring video party and a summer show or seminar. One of the members who works at WSU may be able to get us more information about the International Festival.

The meeting was adjourned.

The next meeting is scheduled for March 11th, same time and place.

Dancing for the Dogs

Here is the first official notice for D4D February 10, 2007. This will be a MECDA/Paws-Up partnership event - so be sure and join up dancers and fans! It will really be worthwhile to be a MECDA member! If you want to dance a solo, duet or small group you must be a MECDA member. Any larger groups performing must have one member amongst them. As you will read, no videotaping other than the official one will be allowed .(I already have that job filled.) As a MECDA member you will received a copy of the dvd or vhs. MECDA members will also have the only reserved seating - a great reason to have a family membership!

Dancing for the Dogs February 10, 2007
Annual Fundraiser for Paws-Up. Paws-Up is a local group that trains assistance and therapy dogs and also is a Delta Society Pet Partners affiliate. All featured performers are members of Heartland MECDA (Middle Eastern Culture and Dance Association.) X POST -- If you could buy it locally what would it be?????

am working on stocking the clinic on my property for use as a costume / consignment shop in the near future. I hope to have an open house before the Rennaisance Faire in April. But we will see, its been so busy lately :0(

What I need to know is what items would the local dancer be interested in picking up locally?

So far I have lots of accessories:

Gauntlets
Glitters
Hair falls
Cowrey falls
Hair flowers
bra's
belts
tassels
and other costuming items.

I also have enough room to have a section of the building for consignment if anyone is interested in selling their stuff there as well. It would be great to have a central location for the Wichita Bellydancers to sell and shop at.

I plan on carrying both cabaret and tribal costuming. The shop would be open up on an event basis and by appointment to anyone needing a new costume. When the weather warms up I would like to start having drum circles occasionally as well. I have all this space so we might as well take advantage of it.

So please let me know what you want to buy or what you have to sell.

By signing below, you are releasing MECDA and First Salem Church and all of their representatives from all liability for this performance and any rehearsals in this space. You are also giving permission to videotape this performance and release all rights to compensation for the videotape to MECDA, which may use it for fundraising. You are aware only the official MECDA videographer will be allowed to video. (Still photos are fine.) You also are aware that this release is a requirement for participation in this performance. Only those signing this release may perform.

I will have this ready to sign at our Jan meeting and at any rehearsals. It is just the age we live in that we have to sign away liability - :)

Hi All,
I am heading up the event at Towne West on Nov. 11th from 12-1pm. Sorry for the late notice but I have been trying to iron out some details.
Yes we will be handing out info at the mall about MECDA. I need volunteers to come for an hour dressed ethnically if ya want and talk to people about MECDA. Sorry that we will not be able to dance. I can't get the proof in time that we have liability insurance. To be a part of this event with Towne West we are promoing with Orange Julius and will have drink samples at our table. It is a good opprotunity to talk about the movie event the next day.

So all that said I need flyers to pass out (At least 100), and volunteers. Contact me ASAP

BDSS

Unfortunately I have to work tomorrow night, and will probably be pretty late as there is no one else to cover for me. :( So I won't make it to BDSS at all. Once again, I apologize for missing yet another event, but I don't have a choice.

I also have heard nothing back from Claudia.

So, I suppose we could promote MECDA with flyers in the auditorium before the show. If anyone has any other ideas, feel free to suggest them.

FYI: I will be out of town on a business trip tomorrow, and I probably won't have access to tribe or email.

Ok ya'll,

I've reached the point where I am completely overwhelmed with work, health and personal problems. I don't think I can effectively serve as president any longer. I thought my job was going to taper off at the end of the year, but it's not. I will definitely continue to attend meetings, and help out in any way I can as an active member.

We could either elect a new president from scratch, or Judie could become president, Suzanne or Jill move into Vice President, etc. We could put this to a vote at our movie event.

I really didn't want to do this, but after dropping the ball on several things, I really think it's best. I hate to just hold the office and not be able to get anything done.

Sorry for all this. I'm pretty depressed about it.

Minutes of Sunday's meeting

Oct 8h Heartland Chapter MECDA Meeting

The meeting was held at 3 PM at Riverside Perk, with 9 members and guests attending.

The focus of the meeting was organizing the video party, set for November 12th in Jabara Hall at WSU. It was decided that members get in free, and non-members pay $2. Light refreshments will be served. Several members volunteered to bring videos for the event.

Assignments were given as follows:
Marissa - drinks and paper towels
Christina – drinks
Heather – cups and cookies
Jill – popcorn
Martha – ice
Dana – napkins, popcorn bags
Suzanne – cookies
Judie – vacuum
Suzanne & Jill will work on a flyer. Suzanne will send it to the City Paper, and Jill will get the info to the Eagle and the Sunflower. The event will also be posted on the website, and all members are asked to give flyers to anyone that would be interested.
Any members who were not at the meeting are asked to bring cookies, if possible.
The meeting was adjourned.

The next meeting is scheduled for December 10th, when we will start making plans for our February show.

Video party for November meeting

Glenn is checking on getting us a master classroom at WSU reserved for our video party. This would give us a lot of room and a big screen! This would happen on the second Sunday of November. I told Glenn to let us know what times are available, before we set a time. I told him we usually meet at 3:00.

We could also bring snacks.

Minutes from last week's meeting

Here are the minutes. Thanks Suzanne. The only thing I added was what I came up with for our mission statement. It's not carved in stone--just a suggestion.

Possible Mission Statement: Our Mission: The Middle Eastern Culture and Dance Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting Middle Eastern dance, culture and music within the southern plains region. We sponsor shows and other events to encourage interaction between local dancers and musicians and to educate the general public on the rich cultural heritage of the Middle East.

Sept 10th Heartland Chapter MECDA Meeting

The meeting was held at 3 PM at Riverside Perk, with 6 members attending.

The minutes were read, and a treasurer’s report was given.

Jill couldn’t make it to the meeting, but she sent the buttons, which were distributed to the members.

Our membership recruiting effort has been successful. We have at least 2 new members, and several other people that have said they are planning to join, but haven’t sent in their paperwork yet.

Marisa has the membership flyers ready to hand out at the Renaissance Fair. She also had some ideas for our mission statement.

The Bellydance Superstars have agreed that we can pass out flyers at their show, and are working with the Orpheum to make sure this is acceptable.

It was suggested that instead of a meeting in November, we have a video party. Marisa will check with Jill to see if her church might be available for this. We will discuss the details at the October meeting, including what video(s) to show.

The meeting was adjourned.

The next meeting is scheduled for October 8th, same time and place.

Great Plains Ren Faire flyers

I won't be able to do much passing out of flyers at the Ren Faire. I'm going to be helping a friend corrale a bunch of rapier warriors to fight wars. I would hand out flyers while I'm doing that since there will be a lot of people passing by me but I don't think they are in our target audience.

I will send people who seem interested to where they can get information but where do I send them?

ORPHEUM TABLE UPDATE

I just spoke to the manager of the Orpheum. He said we could have a table at the BDSS show. If we pay $250.00.

I explained that we're a non-profit just starting out, and we can't come up with that kind of money. I tried bargaining, but it didn't really work.

Meeting Minutes for Aug. 13

Aug 13th Heartland Chapter MECDA Meeting

The meeting was held at 3 PM at Riverside Perk, with 9 members attending.

Jill Rust gave a treasurer’s report. We now have an official chapter bank account, and can write checks with two officers’ signatures.
We donated $450 of clothes and toiletries that were collected from the hafla to help the battered women’s shelter.

There was discussion on the hafla.
The hafla had a great turn out, and the dancers and the audience seemed to be enjoying the evening. Ideas were discussed on improving the room set up at future events, what to look for in possible venues, and making it clear that any video cameras are the official camera(s) for the event. It was suggested that the video releases be signed in advance to facilitate the crowd movement at the door. The video from this year’s event should be available soon.

Several ideas to increase membership were discussed, including having information available at the Renaissance Faire, having social events with reduced admissiong for members (possibly a video night), having information available at the Bellydance Superstars Show, having buttons to identify members, talking to other interested parties beyond the dance community, and making sure the various studios have information available for anyone who might want to participate.

Marisa is checking on giving out information at the BDSS show, and on flyers for the Renaissance Faire. Jill is working on a MECDA button to identify members, and on a web calendar to list local dance events. All members are asked to think about a mission statement for the local chapter that would reflect the aims of the national organization, but might be shorter and simpler. Members are also asked to talk to any people they know that might be interested in joining, and help them find the application form if they need assistance.

The meeting was adjourned, and the officers had a short executive session.

The next meeting is scheduled for September 10th, same time and place.

We have new membership options available to new/renewing members. Due to the increasing prices of postage, printing, etc., our membership fees went up last year (as you are all aware). Due to a great suggestion by one of our members as well as some updating in the membership aspect, we have decided to offer the following options.

(All of the following memberships include the annual Directory via snail mail, discounts to events, and the free basic directory listing).

$50 New Print Membership which will include the mailed monthly happenings and quarterly Chronicle Magazine with Cymbal Digest.

$40 New Print Happenings Membership which will include the mailed monthly happenings, but NO Chronicle magazine with Cymbal Digest (this is the only difference in this membership).

We created this option so that members on a budget could still be MECDA members, but without the quarterly Chronicles magazine with Cymbal Digest.

Also, we are currently having our anniversary party membership special. For renewing members this includes your choice of sticker: either a 'United we dance' or mecda logo sticker.

new members will receive a FREE Chronicles calendar.

Photo spread for kickoff party

Alright everyone, if you have photos that you would like to see in the MECDA Happenings insert that is put in the middle of The Chronicles magazine, post them! I'd like to get a set of good ones together to submit to MECDA for printing as soon as possible. They'll need to be good resolution (i.e. no cell phone pics).

Don't forget we have a meeting on Sunday the 13th! As usual, 3:00 at Riverside Perk.

Also, please please pay your dues. To continue to offer quality events like the hafla, we need support. We have to maintain a certain number of "at large" members. :O)

It's only $35. My professional organization's dues are $180/year. So it's actually quite a bargain.

Just got back from helping Jadzia take the GI-NORMOUS amount of clothes, shoes, toiletries, and cosmetics that we collected Saturday night, to the YWCA Treasure Chest.

They were VERY appreciative of our efforts!

Martha generously offered to make us copies at no charge, if we're wiling to provide a blank VHS tape/cost of VHS tape. I think they're around $3 a piece if you want to go that route.

Gee, I thought the show went really well, but no one is saying anything about it??

I know I'm newish to the area and new to the dance, but it seemed like we had very good attendance (I had 19 people there) and the donations collections are awesome... my car is overflowing - I know the folks at the YWCA shelter will be both pleased and touched.

Did anyone happen to grab my pyrex pie pan that had the tortellini in it? Got halfway home and realised I'd left it. No biggie, it was 4 bucks at Wal-mart.

Thanks to everyone for their work. Johari you were a great MC - thanks for the intro that let me off the hook if I made newbie baby dancer mistakes.

Last Meeting's Minutes

July 23th Heartland Chapter MECDA Meeting

The meeting was held at 3 PM at Riverside Perk, with 10 members and guests attending.

Most of the discussion was on the Hafla scheduled for July 29th.

The door will be unlocked for show set-up and decoration at 5:30. Please enter through the south door. Various members have volunteered to bring décor items.

Shawna is in charge of the door prizes. Everyone is eligible to win, but you must be present to win.

Refreshments: assignments were given for punch and punch bowl, ice, water, table service and cups, and pop.

Rachel has requested that clothing donations be folded in sacks so they will be easy to transport. She requested that Jill (our treasurer) handle any monetary donations.

Julie reported on the line- up. If you have not told her what music you are using, please do so ASAP. She doesn’t need the actual tape/CD, just what the music is and how long it is. She has done a great job with publicity – the event was listed in Sunday’s newspaper, and is scheduled to be in again on Friday.

Next meeting is scheduled for August 13th, same time and place.

Donations table update

I will be unable to attend the meeting, but here is my "report". I've coordinated with the YWCA at several levels. In a nutshell we will be taking all donations, clothing/cash/toiletries/cosmetics to the manager of the Treasure Chest, Joyce. This was at the Y's request. I can take stuff on my way to classes at ADP. What a nice problem it would be if there was too much to fit in my Crown Vic! :) So my first question for the meeting would be, who else can take donations if I overflow my rather large car? I need to call her in advance to make sure that they have space to accept the clothing during that following week, so it needs to be someone willing to take used items home and perhaps keep them for up to 7 days from the Hafla. I think the toiletries, etc should go post haste.

She asked that I let you know that they could also put to use second-hand appliances like crockpots and toasters since they are now launching the shelter residents back into their own housing with as much of start-up as they need. My thought to her was that it would be best if these donations were not funneled through the Hafla just from a logistics issue, but that I would have a requested donations sheet available for people to take with them. This list is a little different than what the front office suggested (which I posted earlier.)

My second question is how early are we able to get into the church? I have a display to set up.

My third question would be can Jill, as treasurer, handle the cash donations (pretty please)? I HATE being responsible for other peoples cash!

Saidah - Joyce absolutely nixed the suggestion I passed your way earlier. The residents are strongly discouraged from attending any events until they know they have a PFA or that their abuser is incarcerated or far far away. I was pretty disappointed.

I may make the meeting but I may not. I have FAMILY coming into town Sunday <<ARGH>> and I need to be there to meet, greet and generally make nice. I may use the meeting as my way to leave early but if I don't make it...

Dues--please read

Hi all,

Me and the treasurer would really love it if everyone could pay their dues either before or at the hafla. I got the list of who has paid, and well, it's a short list :O) I'm not going to worry about it until the hafla, but we have to have a certain number of at-large members or we get an inactive stamp.

I know it may seem like a lot to come up with at once but it's worth it just for the Chronicles subscription. I'll bring my copy with me to the next meeting. Now that Arabesque is defunct and Habibi turned mainstream crap, this is pretty much the best out there.
