Art Cars!

topic posted Wed, March 26, 2008 - 11:12 AM by  Patrick
Hey guys anybody bringing a car?
We've got roads. We WANT them!
We aren't even being picky about the mutant aspect. All we really care about is safety. Brakes are required. Sharp and/or exploding = bad. Simple, no?
But if you want to drive it we need to know.
So get on the website and shout it up!

Gee, seems like nobody wants to bring any art cars. That's a shame. All that road going to waste. (sigh)

Some of us will be bringing art BIKES. Twist and I would love to have an art car at WM, but there's already too much going on for us to pull together a more advanced vehicle than our two-wheelers.

What are your criteria for an art car? Can any automobile theme-decorated be an art car? Or do you mean things more like you see at Burning Man: embellished golf carts, motorcycles surrounded by frameworks, motorized platforms, dance clubs built around buses ... ? Are there vehicle checks and passes issued for which art cars can run during the day vs. the night (e.g. adequate lighting requirements for nighttime)?

      Thanks!

At this point since it's our first time out we're pretty much accepting everything as long as it passes a safety check. Maybe later we'll get more discriminating but then again maybe not (I LIKE variety). So our current criteria is pretty loose. Mutation appreciated but not required.
Four Quarters has a lot of hills and turns so adequate braking is very important.
Beyond brakes we just want to assure that your car isn't going to lose pieces of itself on every lap or suffer some kind of pyrokinetic mishap (if you see Reaper's design you will understand our trepidation on this point).
If you want to drive at night and have adequate lighting then by all means do so.
So you have art bikes? Cool. Bring 'em. After all, this is an art based venue. So in my opinion any kind of art just adds to the whole regardless of wheel count.

so I think we're gonna have an art car. We're buying a short bus this week. We have every intention of making it an artcar/party bus for the summer burns. However it's possible that we won't have time to finish working on it before Wicker Man. But it should involve some funky beats and chillin. Maybe some beverages and definitely some free rides around the land. Do you think a short bus could handle the roads there?

And it will be artful indeed.

Great! My guess is it would be fine on the roads at 4QF.

Have you seen the movie Short Bus? (I loved it.) Maybe you could drive it on down to Sin City and we could have a Short Bus party on the short bus... ;o)

              Sounds great!
The roads aren't really that scary as long as you stick to the main loop.
A short bus should do fine.
Why don't you go to the wickerman website and talk it up?
I'm sure that we all look forward to getting back on the short bus. Ahhh......good times.
              lol.

So actually we have to fix the gas tank first, so I'm not sure if we're gonna have time to make it artsy by the burn. How intense does it need to be? If it's got some cool lights, music, and comfy seating, could we still drive it around as an artcar?

                  Hmmm.
                  Interesting question.
I think that to qualify as an art car it would have to be DIFFERENT in some more significant way than just a tricked out bus. At least a psychedelic paint job or something...

However -while it might not qualify on its own merits as an art car it might have another possibility.
How about simply running it as a funky shuttle giving away free rides? The giveaway aspect would definitely appeal to the other organizers and fit in well with a ten principles type event even if the vehicle in question doesn't count as art in its present incarnation. We were talking about maybe supplying something along those lines ourselves next year so I'm pretty sure it would fly if you're game.

Why don't you take this to the website and talk it up there too? I think this is very doable.

Of course an entirely different way to approach this might be to have the art on the inside of the bus instead of the outside. Kind of an experiential piece versus a purely visual approach. Just a thought. Run with it wherever you're so inclined.
