''In using imagery,I try to compress the material in such a way, that I can get as many levels into one image as can be packed into it.
I try to make each image as evocative as possible,so that a person can hook into one level or another,or more than one.
It is like a mosaic with bits of information which can be put together in different ways so that each person comes away with something individually meaningful.''

Re: dance imagery - meredith monk
Wed, August 1, 2007 - 6:35 PMI found this video of some examples of Meredith Monk’s work:
www.youtube.com/watch
I was wondering if you would like to discuss some aspects of the video in this thread.
There is a bit of information about what is in the video on this page from her website:
www.meredithmonk.org/interdi...dex.html
To me, the part where the dancers are parading across the stage and then in a semi circle is very much like an example of folk dance.
Do you think that Meredith Monk’s work is influenced by folk dance traditions?
Monk’s works are described as multidisciplinary and you can see that they are even from the short video. I am more interested in her choreography of the movement than you vocalizations etc. however, I am wondering if the movement is intentionally awkward to act as a foil to the vocals etc or if it looks that way because it is not given as much attention as the rest of the production. If the latter is the case, then we are giving more attention to dance imagery than Monk does and therefore that is why I questioned your use of her as an example in the first place.
Perhaps you could discuss your own use of imagery in dance. Your students would find that interesting and they will have time to think of some questions before their next lesson.

Re: dance imagery - meredith monk
Wed, August 1, 2007 - 7:01 PMPS. I am not implying that folk dance traditions are awkward. How Monk shows dance looks awkward. Her dancing is not awkward though which make me think the rest of the cast are not dancers. So, why has Monk not used dancers in the production if that is the case? I think the dance imagery could have been very powerful if she had worked with skilled dancers. The relationship of sound and movement could have been explored more. -

Here is a reference: www.dalcroze.org.au
So that answers that question.
Thank you. -

Fri, August 3, 2007 - 7:09 AMI think its possible for 2 people to look at the same thing and feel differently.
I said I liked her quote,I have not shared my opinion, thoughts etc on the rest.
I simply liked the quote as i found it,for me,uplifting.
as a dancer I feel I have no right to judge any one else and the path of dance they choose
can we get a bit more positive?
can we talk about things that inspire us to dance?
inspire us to create?
make us feel passionate and free?

Re: your questions
Fri, August 3, 2007 - 5:46 PMI am sorry if I have given you the impression that I do not find Meredith Monk’s work inspiring. That was not my intention. Here are my answers to your questions:
‘as a dancer I feel I have no right to judge any one else and the path of dance they choose’
As a dancer and choreographer I feel I have a right to at least ask questions if what I observe might influence the judgement of the observance of dance in general. I think Meredith Monk would be disappointed if her performances did not inspire people to ask questions. That is one of the reason she works the way she does. If you read through her website you will find more inspiring quotes.
‘can we get a bit more positive?’
I thought I was being positive and I do not know how I could be more positive.
‘can we talk about things that inspire us to dance?’
Yes, I am inspired to dance because I can dance.
‘inspire us to create?’
People do not create things, people make and express things. I am not a creator, I am an artist. Sorry.
‘make us feel passionate and free?’
Love and understanding make me feel passionate and free. Dance is a good medium for expressing that because when the dance comes from a centre of love and understanding it is well balanced. Dance is a medium in which a deficit of love and understanding can be shown as well.
Thank you for asking the questions and making the opportunity to write these statements in your tribe.
