If anyone has an older Wireless G router, that they are willing to donate to WildFire, can you please bring it. I am close to getting the dinning hall online (with a very slow connection), mainly for vendors to be able to process orders. But it is also good for times like this, while I am here (YES, it is awesome), and I need a connection. The one I brought is making a really scary sound, and isn't working so much.
Thanks,
Chad
Thanks,

Tue, October 6, 2009 - 9:57 AMTeam Wireless-WF,
How was the Wi-Fi connection at this WF?
Broad coverage?
Fast enough?
Do we want the WF Organizers to investigate thethering a 3G capable cell phone next time?

Re: Wireless G Router Donation?
Tue, October 6, 2009 - 11:18 AMI didn't use the wireless out there. I looked for a signal briefly, saw a 1-bar, and decided to go WWAN.
To be honest, I'm fine using WWAN for vending, and wireless would be great, especially if it helps people who work Friday and Monday show up or stay instead of go home. However, I'd be disheartened if I saw lots of people distracted by their laptops, cruising the net.
Pros:
Those of us who work Friday/Monday, can maybe put off going back to it by getting online a little bit
Credit Card Processing for those who don't have WWAN or some other solution
"Instant" updating of the WF forums or website, for Those Left Behind
Cons:
Internet Distraction

Re: Wireless G Router Donation?
Tue, October 6, 2009 - 11:41 AMFor some reason, the Wildfire wifi signal never worked for me. I just couldn't connect and I wasn't sure why.
Was this signal working for other people or could it have been something with my computer?
For credit card processes, I brought my cell and my usb hook up so I can run the internet through my phone. However, I discovered the dlink wifi signal that JN Webster has and I used that to process credit cards.
The problem with this, though was that I had to walk to the opposite side of the dining hall from where I vend with Burning Passion to pick up the signal. So, every time I had a credit card transaction to do, I had to ask the person making the purchase to walk down to the opposite end of the dining hall and leave my vending space unattended while I did the transaction. This wasn't that big of a deal and it honestly didn't bother me, but it was disruptive to other people who may have been waiting for my help.
I was curious if the option of boosting the JN Webster wifi signal was considered? Perhaps just use a router that is for specifically for having a much larger coverage than the average router?
I really appreciate taking the time to set up a wifi signal for the vendors, Chad. That was very thoughtful! -

Re: Wireless G Router Donation?
Tue, October 6, 2009 - 6:23 PMThey do make range extenders that could be bound to the dlink wifi, if that was okay with them to do so, and we could extend it so that the whole dining hall could recive the signal. I can also maybe figure something out as far as using my cellphone to spit out a wifi signal through a computer, i could figure that out for the next widlfire and see just how much range i can get.
