Hello Fire Family,
I am looking for some feedback regarding the drum circle at WildFire this season.
1) Did it bother anyone else? Did we overlap (acoustically) with the field? Was anyone bothered by our circle?
2) Was everyone aware of the circle? I made announcements at both dinners, and Saturday night’s circle was markedly better attended than Friday night’s.
3) Did the dancers / spinners get what they wanted from the drummers? Are there better rhythms for us to play, or did you like the free-flow?
4) What can we do to make it better for Spring 2010 WildFire?
As a side note: chanters / singers are *very* welcome at the circle, as shakers and rattles. Belly dancers and other non-fire dancers are also very welcome at the circle. Please come dance with us.
Please - someone remember to post a reminder about the circle for next WildFire. I will likely remember, but others are encouraged to post before I do.
-Scott

Re: Drum Circle Feedback
Tue, October 6, 2009 - 6:36 PMIm not sure about other people but i kinda wish there was a small amount of time on the field where there was just drumming so that i could spin to the drums and not always the music, there is just something about drumming that seems more well back to nature than some of the music. Dont get me wrong i like the music as much as the next person but a little variety is what i would like to see. -

Re: Drum Circle Feedback
Tue, October 6, 2009 - 7:14 PMThat's one reason they had the drum circle; so you could have the choice. Correct me if I was wrong, but there was fire spinning at the drum circle.
I think the concept was sound, but that for next time we just need to push it/pump it up more. I don't know if everyone knew it was going on. I think it's a great idea, though, and hope next time I have a chance to join in for a bit. -

Re: Drum Circle Feedback
Tue, October 6, 2009 - 7:17 PMThere was definitely fire spinning at the drum circle. Space was limited, but it was a good time nonetheless.

Re: Drum Circle Feedback
Tue, October 6, 2009 - 7:29 PMI was at the saturday drumming, and loved it! Wish there were more drummers. Space did look limited, but it served it's purpose and everyone took turns.

Re: Drum Circle Feedback
Wed, October 7, 2009 - 6:39 PMI wasn't aware of the drum circle, can't even figure out where it was held. Last spring there was a spontaneous drum circle in one of the tents (blue or red, I don't remember). Did people complain about the cacophony?

Re: Drum Circle Feedback
Thu, October 8, 2009 - 9:08 AMI loved having the drum circle/fire spinning option. It definitely provided a different spinning atmosphere, one that I much appreciated. Scott- Thank you SO much for taking the initiative and organizing this!

Re: Drum Circle Feedback
Thu, October 8, 2009 - 10:02 AMWe'll need to make more people aware of the drum circle. It might be interesting to start drumming on the main field and then move down to the amphitheater. Don't know how feasible that would be though, just an idea.

Re: Drum Circle Feedback
Thu, October 8, 2009 - 10:13 AMI think we'll get better and better turn-out as awareness grows. This was our first attempt at the amphitheater. Let's all remain mindful of the drum circle Friday (opening night!) for Spring 2010 WF. Also, let's make an effort to talk it up next season. it will become part of everyone's expectations...
Space is a bit limited. Right now, I don't see that as a problem. We can use more of the performance space. Also, we can relocate the drummers to the center-section of the amphitheater, and have two rows for them (if we need them).
If we out-grow the amphitheater ... then we will come-up with a plan (ha!). Let's get to the problem before we start looking for solutions.

Re: Drum Circle Feedback
Thu, October 8, 2009 - 10:23 AMIf you can outgrow the Amphitheater then I don't think anyone could argue against you guys having main-field drumming time! There wouldn't be anyone left to complain, 'cause they'd all be at the amphitheater.
How did details like fuel dump go? Was the dining hall a good sound bock from the dj music? I know i could only hear you guys when I listened for you, but wasn't sure if it went the other way around. -

Re: Drum Circle Feedback
Thu, October 8, 2009 - 12:49 PMThe drummers could only barely hear the DJ music, and I hear the field couldn't hear the drummers at all - so no acoustic overlap at all.
The fuel dump was well used, and we had plenty of safeties. That worked just like the field. Actually, it was nice to practice WF-safety policies away from the main field. It felt like spinning at home ...

Re: Drum Circle Feedback
Thu, October 8, 2009 - 10:55 AMI knew about the Drum Circle, but to me it wasn't really made know there'd be fire down there with it. When announced it sounded like just drumming would be happening. So I didn't end up going down.

Re: Drum Circle Feedback
Thu, October 8, 2009 - 1:47 PMSo a possible solution to the problem: If we're concerned about awareness, maybe the Drum Circle could go on the class schedule?

Re: Drum Circle Feedback
Sat, October 10, 2009 - 10:28 AMI really liked the drumming and the whole scene there on Sat. night. I only wish there was more: guitar, trumpets, cow bells, fiddles... everything! (in moderation- and with everybody listening to each other!) -

Re: Drum Circle Feedback
Sat, October 10, 2009 - 2:06 PMI heard the announcements that were made, so even though I'm not interested in spinning anywhere near a drum circle, I knew about it. (I'm happy it seems to be working out well, too.) Is it certain that there will be drum circles in the amphitheater again in the Spring? And that they will be every night? If so, I'll make a note to include the information the greeter tent passes on to new arrivals. If not, just let me know what we should be telling people.

Re: Drum Circle Feedback
Tue, October 13, 2009 - 7:07 PMScott~
Thank you for arranging even this trial drum circle - spinning in the ampitheatre. For those of us who like that kind of earthy, tribal, rhythmic stuff - it was great.
(1) I could hear the Dj distantly if I listened while at the ampitheatre, not sure the other way around.
(2) So Sad I missed it Friday!!! Wish I had known better.
(3) I greatly appreciated all of the drummers. In fact if I owned my own drum, I would have been more than happy to join you after/between my spins. I have to say I'm ont sure if it was the bench break up - or perhaps the lack of a base drum (noticably different/lower tone that sets the core rhythm) - there were moments of amazing cohesion and some moments of break up .. when things seemed in a rocky transition. I would love to see what would happen with an experience drummer on a slightly lower pitched base drum that's accepted as the core rhythm.
Either way - thank you drummers!!!! For providing a great, back to the roots experience for those of who started out spinning to drums. I liked the smaller performance space, allowing for increased intimacy - there were PLENTY of safeties, most of hte front row was no more than 5 feet away from the spinners, and had duvies at the ready.
