Note, this is just my personal philosophy:
Learning the identity of the guest would be living giving him/her an invitation to stay. Spirits sometimes get 'stuck' in this world. They should be helped to cross over, but not all of us know how to do that. Unless you have a calling to help spirits cross over to the light, I would suggest that you kindly ask the spirit to leave. You can stand in your power center and command the spirit into the light. Tell him/her that this plane is for the living and therefore he/she needs to move on. If you have problems or they don't want to go, have a professional come in and escort the guest out.

Ignoring your guest is not good for either of you; you deserve your privacy and your guest should be on the other side of the veil.

I also live in a house with an invisible (sometimes appearing as a mist) guest. I however, know who it is . It is the man who built the house and lived there for 30 plus years. We just call him grandpa-lol. He also walking in and out of the bathroom, shuts and opens the bathroom door-locks the antique lock on the front door for which we have no key. (luckily the other door only has a deadbolt we put on so we can always get in. He also moves tools, hides flashlights and unplugs the toaster and iron-sometimes while we're using them! We also hear him walking up to the loft and sometimes outside coming up the stairs. we had to put latches on the kitchen cabinets because he would open the cabinet door when we'd turn our backs and we'd hit our heads on the cabinet doors! lol

We also have a black cat spirit too.

If it doesn't bother you just ask who it is and enjoy it.

personally i disagree that his is the "plane of the living" as if this plane is an exclusive resort , and membership is only for those "special "people that continue to breathe. But thats neither here nor there.

I would suggest that you DONT try to discover the identity by DIRECT routes, kind of rude in my book, kind of like someon moving ino YOUR house and demanding your name and right to remain there, "lets see your credentials Miss, and license to reside" its an implied insult, nothing direct, but the spirit could take offense, and thats probably not what you want.
Instead i offer this, set up a SMALL area, not in the way, nothing too dramatic, maybe a nice coffee table or corner table where you can set up an altar to the spirit, SPEAK to the spirit, (yes, out loud, not in your head) and tell him/her/it that this is its altar and that youd like to peacefully co-exist for a while and that youer willing to provide some small things to make life easier for it/him/her. Ask the spirit to tell you what kinds of things it would like on this altar, suggest perhaps dreams, ( ONLY if youre comfortable with that, it can be a tricky thing with spirits talking in your dreams, you allow access to your dreams to the spirit if you do this, and in this you cant lie to it, it will know if your subconsciously resenting its presence) or perhaps just little thigs to tel you like thigs out of place that might look better on the altar, things like that. Over time you will discover WHO the spirit is, it might like toy cars for example, or ribbons, or small pictures of children, or food, a particular kind of fruit, a particular kind of booze, ( btw, rum is always good for spirits, set in a wide mouth bowl, type of bowl to be determined by the spirit).
In this way youll learn WHO the spirit is, and over time whether or not you can get along.
