What are some of the books you'd recommend to others who cast spells?
I find Anne Moura's Book Grimoire for the Green Witch to be one of the best books on spellcasting I've read.
And then, there is Eileen Holland's Grimoire of Magickal Correspondences.
For very simple household charms and spells and for beginners, I love Ellen Dugan's Cottage Witchery. Its just such a homey, sweet book. It's totally non-threatening, simple, and somehow, comforting. And it brings home the idea that you don't have to do big complicated rituals.

Re: Spellcasting and Books
Sat, February 10, 2007 - 12:00 PMA very creative source is "The Greek Magical Papyri in Translation: Including the Demotic Spells: Texts" where you find a lot of mixed antique Egiptian sources with Greek ones. Its not for beginers but have really different from usual ones. Also the psicomagia from Jodoroswky (dont know if its translante) that mix chaos magick with teather.

Sun, February 11, 2007 - 12:28 PMI enjoyed Anne Moura's series Green Witchcraft.
The Grimoire is a nice reference book to have if you also have her Green Witchcraft series too.
If Spells of different cultures and era's are of interest, whether things in this book are seful to someone or not this is an interesting book to look at as it's huge. This is not geared towards any particular pagan path..it's an encylopedia of Spells and Rituals gathered by the author as this is one of her interests.
The Element Encyclopedia of 5000 Spells: The Ultimate Reference Book for the Magical Arts by Judika Illes
a nice workbook of sorts for candle magic is:
The Candle Magick Workbook: Why and How Candle Magick Works by Kala Pajeon
and this one for spellcrafting has some sound info, thoughts and advice:
Power Spellcraft For Life: The Art Of Crafting And Casting For Positive Change by Arin Murphy-Hiscock

Re: Spellcasting and Books
Sun, February 11, 2007 - 12:42 PMps....I know Eileen Holland, very nice woman. We haven't been in touch in a while but once in a blue we find each other again to say hello. she lives upstate now.
She was living here in nyc some years ago before she moved upstate and we met and got to hang out a couple of times. when she moved she sent me a lovely package from a business she and a friend I think it was had been trying to launch...I don't know if they still have it..where they sold lovely homemade things that had a magickal twist, such as lovely soaps and powders, incense etc.
I actually still have some incense and some blessing powders left.
Anyway...she has written some interesting reference materials.
her first one has a lot of reference matarial as well..The Wicca Handbook by Eileen Holland.
she is also from the self experiential, self studied path. It's nice to see diversity of ways to the path of the Witch in our communities and from our authors so we can get a whole host of experiences from different people to ponder. -

Sun, February 11, 2007 - 1:05 PMHow is the Wicca Handbook? Is it very caught up in the Wiccan religion to the point that you can't separate out any principles, or is it accessible to non-wiccans?

Re: Spellcasting and Books
Sun, February 11, 2007 - 5:29 PMI would say though she does say this is written by her it comes from a Wiccan point of view as she does consider herself Wiccan and Witch. But the book is accessible in my opinion to non-Wiccans as well as it's essentially a reference book, filled with correspondances and some spell crafting, the beginning is meant for new comers but but like the book suggests it can also be useful to those already along their practice and path.
and while not all Witches are Wiccan, I consider myself a non-wiccan Witch as well.....some of us still have some commonalities even if only through our observing the Wheel of the year though we may do that differently and for those of us who do incorporate the use of spellcrafting/ritual magic and other tool of the trade so to speak:-) so the book is usable.
it really isn't too different from the other book but the other one you mentioned is far more a straight reference, one that may not be straight off accessible to the new comer.
I have my copy of both, the first one she signed when it came out as she gave me a copy and we got together for brunch. though it has my given name and not my spirit/witch name (willow).
the second one I purchased when it came out and it's an interesting reference.
ps------masterpiece theatre is showing Dracula tonight, check your local listings....I may miss it but maybe they will repeat it;-[
