AzaAshe Roots of Africa Dance and Drum Company is a very diverse and very energetic group of youth from the pioneer valley who perform the powerful drum and dance traditions of West Africa. All proceeds from this event go to AzaAshe's service and educational visit to Senegal, West Africa this June. All are welcome.

A little more about AzaAshe and their trip.........
AzaAshe (`aza' means powerful in Swahili and `ashe' means life-force in the Yoruba language) is a student African Dance company. The company was born three years ago and has since grown and done more service work around the Pioneer Valley. We have an African Dance and Drum camp held every summer (this year we are transforming it into a sleep over camp blackrebels.com/camp.html ).

Our company is a very diverse group with students from all grades (the youngest in our group is 8, the oldest is 19) who dance together and perform all over the Pioneer Valley. We come from many different backgrounds and ethnicities and feel as though we are one family. Our company is based out of the idea of empowering the youth and maintaining a strong sense of building community. The students
create a lot of their own dance pieces and have a strong voice in what the company does.

Our goal as a company is to spread power and peace to everyone we meet. We are now trying to reach out further than the Pioneer Valley and into Africa. We have been organizing this trip to Senegal, Africa for the last two years, and our wish has finally been granted. We will be going over in late June and stay for 17
days. While we are there, we will be learning the dance forms and drum rhythms of the Senegalese people. We will be taking classes from Master dancers and drummers who are highly respected in their community. We also believe that we must give back to those who we take from, so we have planned and organized many community service projects for the short time that we will be there. We are going to be meeting students from a school in Dakar and helping them to
better understand our dynamic culture. We are bringing school supplies with us, and are eager to meet them and get to know about their life styles and culture. We are very excited about the experiences that this trip will bring us. Not only do we want to be able to give back to Senegal, but we'd also like to bring back to our community what we hope to have learned from this ancient culture. We are starting to schedule workshop, our summer camp and performances for this summer when we return, and we have a strong desire that we will be able to show and teach the newly learned techniques and steps and the strong sense of community that Africa
has always embodied. We have been fundraising both individually and as a group
since early last year, but we still have a long way to go before we reach our goal. We will continue our fundraising but in order to go this summer as planned, we must look for support from outside organizations and individuals. As one of our local artists that we admire, we are asking for a donation and any amount you can give is greatly appreciated. (We are a non-profit)
