Hello everyone,

Thank you for joining tribe Wolgemutant. My goal is to make this a fun, friendly tribe where people can meet and talk "wolgemut"

Please take a moment to introduce yourself and to tell us more about your "wolgemut" self.

Again, welcome and I hope you'll stay and enjoy yourself.

  • Greetings! I've been to Pennsic twice, and fell in love with Wolgemut both times.

Not much to tell about me, really. Just general demon-with-a-needle, worse-with-a-bottle, carouser, trouble-making wench, based in and around London.

    When am I happy? When I ...

    * 've finished a great outfit (even more so if I see it on somebody who really loves it: don't get me started about the people who haven't...)
    * look at my guy or even hear his voice
    * fuss my kitty (who must be worshipped at all times)
    * see my pavilion in a tidy state, for a change
    * fondle fabric
    * see a gorgeous full moon over a castle, and think to myself "Hey, I *don't* live in America!"
    * look out my office window and see the Gherkin and realise, again, that I'm in the greatest city on the planet (and that's only because I've never been to other planets).

    and definitely, when I:

    * listen to Wolgemut
    • Hello Marina and thank you for introducing yourself! What a great list of things (no comment on the last :)

But I'd like to ask... what the heck is the Gherkin? I thought that that was a type of pickle? Is there a giant pickle in London that I don't know about? I'd love to see a picture of it. :-)

      Cheers

It's a fairly new building in London - shaped like a space rocket or a gherkin. Here's a web page that has pictures of it (or do a Google for "London Gherkin" and you'll get this page and loads others).

        www.reggie.net/album.php

Not only is it beautiful (even though it's fairly new), but it's apparently also very Cutting-Edge Technology: low emissions heating and ventilation systems, etc.

In looks, I always prefer the old stuff, but the Gherkin represents the rest of London - still beautiful, but looking to the future, too.

Come over and have a look "in person" some time! If you think Insulae Draconis wouldn't make it worth your time, esp with the relatively cheaper Ryanair (and other airlines) intra-European fares, I don't know what to tell ya.

Matter of fact, been meaning to ask: why *don't* Wolgemut travel to more intra-Drachenwald events? We'd love to see you everywhere, but Ffair Raglan would have been particularly perfect - a whole castle that we can play in, not just around. Kitties! Elderberry bushes, groaning with bounty! And this year Caitlin and Otto led the music for a torchlit ball in one of the courtyards... Ahh, lovely.
        • Gherkin anyone?

          Sun, October 1, 2006 - 1:57 PM
Thank you Marina for the link... I can't believe that I've never seen this thing before, then again London has so much to offer and I tend to spend most of my time in the British Museum! :-)

          >>Matter of fact, been meaning to ask: why *don't* Wolgemut travel to more intra-Drachenwald events?

Good question with a simple answer. Technically, Wolgemut is a "professional" group and the SCA is just for fun. The fact is that I enjoy SCA events very much (great people=great fun) but my bandmates are usually not interested or need a financial reason for attending an event. Pennsic is the only exception because we can cover our cost and it is such an amazing event. I've recently decided to be a bit more "active" with the SCA, but that means simply me and not the group, so if you have a suggestion for an event that I simply shouldn't miss, please let me know. :-)

In fact, I'll be at Crown Tourney and will enjoy an entire weekend of music making with Caitlin ad Otto. It should be lots of fun!

Thanks again for the Gherkin link. Anything else about London that I should know about?

The gazillions of great pubs for which you *must* have a tour guide (OK, so maybe you don't need one, but it's much more fun). The wonderful fabric shops, the museums, the gorgeous curry houses and huge diversity of restaurants, the views...

The Gherkin has been up for only a couple of years, maybe 2, I think? - perhaps that's why you haven't seen it?

I think you're long overdue for another visit. ;>

As for unmissable ID events, Ffair Raglan has got to be it. Well, any event where we stumble into a castle is good (and I'll keep you updated on those if you wish), but Ffair Raglan is the one that's going to consistently get bigger adn better each year. We think, believe and hope...

Do you do Doublewars, as well? I keep meaning to get to that, and whilst nothing is ever again going to jeopardise our Pennsic plans again, I would like to see if I can manage it this year...

Marina, I think you are right. I am long overdue for a visit, but how long would I need for a "gazillion" pubs? :-)

              >Do you do Doublewars, as well? I keep meaning to get to that, and whilst nothing is ever again going to jeopardise our Pennsic plans >again, I would like to see if I can manage it this year...

I've been to the Double Wras several times over the past few years and it is always a very fun event. I think you would enjoy it.

              Cheers
  • Greetings to all,

I love Wolgemut! Especially when they come to our camp to play for our court night at Pennsic! House Darkmoon loves Wolgemut, and my sister said that she had a great time dancing with you this year! I couldn't make it, but I am glad she danced!
    Your music makes me happy!

    Namaste,
    Joranda

P.S. Micha if you are interested I believe that I may have some photos and video from past Pennsics. We are currently trying to dig up some from last year.
    • Welcome Jordana, House Darkmoon has always been a favorite and this year was no exception. The dancing was amazing, and the Polarbear dance received great shield wall protection! :-)

      >P.S. Micha if you are interested I believe that I may have some photos and video from past Pennsics.
      >We are currently trying to dig up some from last year.

I am interested, please feel free to post some photos here and let us know where we can see the video.

      Cheers
  • Hello everyone in Wolgemut Land!

I know that several new people have joined this tribe so I'd like to extend the invitation to new faces (as well as old) to introduce yourselves.

    /Micha
    • Ok than here we go:

My name is Mathieu, I'm a professional musician and sound designer based in Montreal. I have been playing early music in numerous band here for about ten years now. I sing and play mostly string and percussion instrument. I discover only recently Wolgemut and instantly became a fan thanks to youtube :) and I plan on ordering their CD very soon and hope to see them live some day I guess somewhere in the US.

      Excuse my English I'm French-Canadian

      Cheers!

      Mathieu
      • "Oh, Professorin..."

Guten morgen! I just recently joined tribe and was pleased to stumble across this group! Micha, you may (or may not) remember me as a longtime AZ Wolgemut fan (now proud to call myself a "Wolgemutant"!) who faithfully attended multiple performances every year at the AZ Ren Faire.

Perhaps you may recall my "kikiriki" Wolgemut hat (and other assorted homemade Wolgemut apparel), my companion's rolling on the ground (on cue), or my "SAVE WOLGEMUT" petition that almost got me kicked out of the Faire one year! I tried sending you an e-mail awhile ago. Not sure if you got it, but in case you didn't, I'll take this opportunity to again thank you for all the great music and for always being so gracious and taking the time to talk before/after shows.

Wolgemut was a major force in opening the door to what is my recently expanding love of Early music. I joined the SCA a couple of months ago and have been exposing myself to as much "period" music as possible. I hope to some day join the local ensemble in our barony and develop some skill on a few of the instruments I own (but rarely practice, since it's not as much fun by yourself!). Right now, my (limited) time is being devoted to our drum & dance group that I joined shortly after getting into the SCA. And by the way, everything in this paragraph is something that puts me "in a good mood"!

Since, until about a month ago, I didn't realize that non-SCA members could go to Estrella, I haven't seen you perform since your last year at the AZ Faire. I trust you'll be at Estrella in 2008? PLEASE say "yes'! Oh, and hello to all my fellow Wolgemutants, too!

        Johannes Grim (Eric)
        • Hello Eric and welcome to the Wolgemutants tribe. I do remember you and I'm sorry to say that I'm very much behind in my email responses. I know that you sent me one and suspect that it got filtered into a seperate folder that has eluded my gaze. *sigh*

I remember full well your amazing home made shirts and hats and the wonderful enthusiasm you showed (especially with the "Polar Bear Dance") and it was always a pleasure to talk with you. I'm happy to hear that you are now actively involved in early music and I wish you all the best with your pursuits. I know that practicing can be tedious but the old saying "Practice makes perfect" still holds true. Hopefully we'll get a chance to jam someday.

As for Estrella, etc. I haven't decided yet about next year due to possible schedule conflicts. I really hope we can work it into the schedule, but we have an offer to do a tour of Hawaii and (sorry to say) if it's a choice between Estrella or Maui... we'll I hope you'll understand :-) I haven't given up on returning to ARF yet, and maybe the management will finally get the message that there are quite a few fans in AZ that would like us to return.

At any rate, have fun and keep practicing and hopefully we'll see each other next February. Again, welcome to the tribe and please keep in touch and let me know what you are up to.

          Servus

          /Micha
          • Estrella or Maui, eh? The only thing I can say is...do you need a roadie? ;-)

It would wunderbar if you could return to ARF someday! What can we do? Do I need to start another petitiion?!? I'll gladly send e-mails (and enlist others to do likewise) if needed. We were lucky enough to have Tartanic help fill the void after your last year here, but now they're gone, too. I know there is a new version of Tartanic now, but even if it's somehow just as good as the old one, well...it's still not Wolgemut!!! :-(

Speaking of "new versions" of bands, there was one item in my e-mail that I'm still curious about. I noticed awhile ago that Conrad and Berit seem to have a NEW Wolgemut. Is that right? Is this with your blessing? If the answer is "no", I'm sorry to bring it up. If the answer is "yes", then let me repeat the idea I pitched in my (long lost) e-mail: If it ever becomes feasible, it be great if there were a "Wolgemut Reunion show" with all (or as many possible) old and current members. Such an occurance would no doubt have to be preserved on DVD/CD, as lawmakers everywhere may deem it too dangerously fun to ever repeat!

Whatever form the group takes, though, one thing has always remained true: Ich liebe Wolgemut! (yes, I know using the few smatterings of German that I still remember may seem like I'm "living in the past" or out of date - but I don't know any Swedish!). Now if you'll excuse me, the thought of someday jamming with Michael has made me realize how badly I need to go practice!!!
      • Bon jour Mathieu and welcome to the Wolgemutants tribe. I'm very sorry for the delay in answering this message (life on the road is a challenge) but I'm very happy that you found us and that you enjoy the music. I'd be very interested in hearing some of your music.

Montreal must be a great place for music. Perhaps you know some of our friends with the group Cercamon? They are a fantastic trio and I just had the pleasure of seeing them a few weeks ago. If you don't know them be sure to check out their website, the music is just incredible.

        www.ensemblecercamon.com/

Again welcome (and please do not apologize for your english, as you can see my Frech is horrible :-) and I hope that we'll see you at a Wolgemut event soon.

  • Greetings,

I enjoyed listening to you warm up at Pennsic this year. (Lived down the block from Calontir, next to Llewlyn)

My favorite instruments are all woodwinds followed by drums. I play the Oboe a little and have promised myself a shawm or other medieval period oboe precursor if I practice regularly with the Oboe.

I wanted to say you all rocked on Friday night of Pennsic.
    • Hello Elvira,

Thanks for the comment and welcome to the Tribe. Yeah shawms! There are a lot of double reed instruments to choose from so hopefully you'll find something that you really enjoy playing and then (who knows) you may never want to play the oboe again :-)

      Also, you wrote...
"I wanted to say you all rocked on Friday night of Pennsic."

Thank you, thank you and thank you. I can't begin to tell you how much fun that concert was and I'm very proud of everyone involved. It took a lot of work and practice to make it all happen and Emory, Glenn and Michael (the rock band) did a fantastic job dealing with all of my quirky request and mastering the equipment. I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed it. Cheers!

  • Hello Micha and all,

I randomly ran across Wolgemut during a websearch for interesting music with bagpipes, and found out that Jason and Kevin (who I know from faire and Pipe & Bowl back in the day) were members. So, I checked out the site because of them, but stayed for the music ;>

I have a new job with a long commute, so I imagine there will be much Wolgemut in my future.
    • Greetings! As someone that's been a Wolgemut fan nearly as long as they've existed (Micha, how long WERE you together before you started playing ARF?) I can tell you with certainty that Wolgemut can make almost any commute better! :-)
      • Hey Johannes,

        You wrote:
        >Micha, how long WERE you together before you started playing ARF?

As a matter of fact, Wolgemut was formed in October of 1997 (almost 10 years now, yikes) and we boldly (or stupidly) decided to take a trip to Amerika in January/February of 1998. I was able to convince the AZRF to let us be guest for a few weekends. Our first few performances were a disaster because they didn't realize how loud we were and they placed us in one of the quiet lane spots (ouch) but soon we were moved to a stage. 1999 was our first full year and 2004 was our final year. I don't remember if we met in 1999 but I do recall seeing you in 2000. Do you happen to have any pictures of you and the gang wearing your Wolgemut shirts?

        Cheers

        /Micha
        • I started going to the AZ Ren Faire when I first moved here, which was the winter of '97. I'm guessing that I probably didn't see you in '98 as it seems you must have stuck out a bit and I would've remembered! I am fairly certain I caught one show by myself in '99, though it was most likely not until the following year that I bought a cd and actually talked to you. *sigh* Memories...

As for any archival footage, well sadly the couple that formed the other main part of "the gang" decided that I was "EVIL" when I started dating my wife (who, at the time, was still waiting for her divorce to finalyze and was, thus, still legally married). Ah, where would the world be without the judging of GOOD CHRISTIANS? (Sorry, I'm not bitter - really!!!) Anywho, we obviously had a falling out and they were the ones who had photos and video from when we attended various Wolgemut shows. Though they were always supposed to give me copies, alas, it never happened. :-(

I still do have my hat and a couple of shirts. Maybe I can take pictures of them to share. I still wear the hat every now and then and actually went to wear one of the shirts the other day, but it seems to have...*ahem*...SHRUNK a bit. :-|
    • Greetings Alyc and thank you for introducing yourself. I'm happy to hear that you enjoy the music.

FYI, Jason and Kevin are still playing with the Brunos and I'm very happy to have them on board, both are excellent musicians and very Wolgemut. :-)

Hi, my name is Tayyib and I'm a Wolgemutant.

I bought my first CD at my first Pennsic and haven't looked back since.

I got to know some of the band a bit better this year serving them coffee at Pennsic. This job also gave me prime seats when it came concert time.

Hope to see ya'all soon. Until then I'll just listen to the CDs. . . .
    • Hello Tayyib, and welcome to the Wolgemutants tribe! Thank you for being such a great barrista this year at Pennsic (many an early mornings did I spend at the coffee house, mmmmm, coffee) and for keeping me caffeinated. :-) Feel free to jump into the forum, ask questions, post pictures or simply share your favorite wolgemut moments.

And if you're feeling like you need a Wolgemut fix, there is the Wolgemut YouTube group which has loads of videos, including some from this years Pennsic.

  • I am Appollonia, a history teacher in NJ. My 10 year old son is one of your biggest fans. He was enthralled with the music at Pennsic this year, we had to buy him your CD, he listened to it almost constantly for the 2 weeks following War. This is the same kid who is addicted to Led Zepplin. He has started taking guitar lessons due to the interest he has now in music, this from watching your live performances. He was trying to replicate the "Farmors Polska" from the Cd!
    • Hello Appollonia and welcome to the tribe.

I'm really happy to hear that your son enjoys the music (I only hope he hasn't driven you nuts with it) and that he's interested in playing music! That's great. I wish him all the luck in the world and encourage him to practice. In fact, if he would like to have some music notation (like the Farmor's Polska) simply send me a message and I'll email you a PDF file.

FYI, if he begs to start playing the bagpipe, it's not our fault! :)

Thanks for introducing yourself and I look forward to hearing from you.

  • Hello fellow Wolgemutants! I first saw this *fabulous* group at Pennsic several years back and have been in love ever since. Most recently, a friend of mine and I got to dance for y'all at the Maryland Renaissance Festival on Sunday, October 13th. You were most gracious and...as always...excellent performers. Thank you!!!
    • Hello Aneesh,

Sorry for taking so long to read your post ( I really need to check tribe more often, darn that MySpace :) and thank you for introducing yourself. It was a real treat to have you dance along at MDRF this year; I look forward to doing it again next year. Remember, as much as I enjoy dancing around like a monkey, we "love" to have dancers join in, so don't be shy.

Thanks again and welcome to the tribe!
