what did you think you would be doing at this time of your life?
I know I thought I would have a bunch children and be a stay at home mom. I would do my house work in a dress and heels and perfect lipstick. Dinner would be on the table at 6 pm (gotta have time for hubby to get home, have a highball and read the paper) with a perfectly cooked roast or some such thing.
One day I realized that my fantasy of being a 50's housewife was just that a fantasy...so I put a bumper sticker on my car that says
"The Cleavers Lied"
Apparently I am not the only one who had that fantasy growing up. I get alot of comments on that bumper sticker! LOL!

Wow, you're dream is the exact opposite of mine. I never wanted kids, and didn't have them. I wanted to be married, and have been for almost 17 years now, and to be the CEO of a multi million corp. Well, I got the married part right. LOL
Leaving home at 14, and life in general got in the way, so college never happened for me. I guess I can be thankful that I accomplished half of my goal, but still, I always wonder what would have happened if I had ben the CEO.......

What didn't I want to be?!
I was blessed with parents who let me play in the mud, with trucks and GI Joe as well as Barbie, Tonka Toys and Make up.
There was and still is a part of me, that would be thrilled to be a housewife and stay at home mom.
But, there is also a part of me that recognizes that it's not going to be possible.

I never wanted kids either but I have one now. She is the most perfect thing. Same with being married. The never wanting to part though he is a good guy, too.
I wanted to be an astronaut or an engineer of some sort. My parents also didn't subscribe to "setting gender-appropriate goals" but to just be happy. I am a firefighter now and I cannot imagine being happier in what I hadn't learned early on to just do the right thing and be yourself.
My parents now wish they had emphasized Barbie more...lol

Luna, you and I pretty much had the same "fantasy". I swear my mom was the PERFECT 50's housewife. Dinner was always ready the minute my dad came home from work. The house was always perfect and my mother always was well groomed, dressed and coiffed, including her red lipstick! Heck, my mother still is!
My dream was to be carried away by my knight in shining armor and to live happily ever after. And you know what, without going into detail, I actually got my dream in my husband Stanley. I've been able to be a stay-at-home mom and raise two wonderful children who are now on their own, married and raising their families. My Stanley still provides for and protects me. So in many ways, even with all of life's challenges, I am living my dream.
Keep in mind, I was NEVER June Cleaver or Donna Reed. Yeah, "The Cleavers Lied"! ((HUGE giggles))
Love,
Leah

I also wanted to be Paula Abdul and an elementary school teacher. I even remember wanting to be a bellydancer at one point.
When I was a little girl, I don't remember thinking about what I would actually be doing, just what I wanted to be doing. -

Unsu...
ahh, you ladies cracked me up.
I can just imagine you all as little girls with your dreams.
I think it is great that some of your parents didn't set gender specific play. I remember getting an army helmet and hand grenades, green plastic army guys and a plastic knife & gun for christmas (times have really changed, I do not even SEE these kind of toys anymore) and then also one year getting a football helmet and a football. One year I was given a Barbie and promptly took it outside and broke it. I always disliked Barbie.

You know I never thought about it. In high school I did, but not as a small child.

I just wish I could stay home and be a housewife. I have the wonderful kids and the perfect partner, but alas we both have to work to make ends meet, so there is no staying home and having dinner on the table at the same time every night. Throw in bellydance classes, health issues, kids activities....Nope June Cleaver I am not.....besides, I hate housework.
