LIIIZ!!!!!
Thats too funny...I come here to make this thread and you got a costume one! YAY
Great minds think alike
So.....I have some food thoughts food for thought. Lee and Kat and whoever else feel free to add ANY tips for ALL OF US!
This is something I wrote on the eplaya:
VINEGAR! SALT! JERKY!
Its true for me too.....the climate + excitement = different eating habits then I have not in that desert.
I have found that vinegary stuff is sooooo amazing out there....Just like a "vinegar playa footbath", your innards need some acid to balance out that alkaline. You will so crave vinegar!
Last year I finally bought special vinegar items and they were heaven: Really good garlic stuffed olives, or nice gourmet pimento stuffed.
Best quality pickles I could get: tiny ones, big ones. Dill, sweet. Yum.
Pepperoncini or antipasto in jars. Kraut if thats your thing....
You have to keep this stuff refrigerated, even tho its not that sensitive, but its OH SO WORTH IT.....
I never enjoyed a pickle so much in my life.
You will find yourself doing wierd things, like drinking pickle juice.
It clears your brain of playa dust just a bit!
Turkey Jerky is also my life saver....2 big bags gets me thru.
Last year I loved Gourmet beet and sweet potato chips. mmmMmm
I dont have time or energy to cook hot foods, so might as well get good quality snacks!
I also boil like 6 hard boiled eggs before Bman, put em in the cooler, and I have protien hits for the next 2-3 days.
I dont like Canned Tuna because its too hard to get the stink off me and I dont want to spend my whole camp shower trying to get tuna off my hands and face.
Another trick: using Irish Cream Baileys for coffee cream. No refridgeration needed!

Mon, April 14, 2008 - 9:31 PMSPRAY SUNSCREEN!
It kinda has a wierd film to it after applied, but I dont care. It works VERY WELL. I dont have to get my hands messy with lotion.....you just spray and get even coverage.
HOWEVER, its not as fun as getting a hottie to put sunscreen lotion on for you, so this might lessen your chances of a few cheap happy moments. ;)
However, Im not swifty enough in the flirt dept. If I left it up to others to apply my sunscreen I would have skin cancer by now.
So I spray.....spray spray all darn day
I cant live without my spray sunscreen at Bman. -

Re: Burning Bee Tips for New Bees
Mon, April 14, 2008 - 9:31 PMI still use lotion on my face, though. -

Re: Burning Bee Tips for New Bees
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 8:07 AMSam, really hit it dead o \n with the Salty?vinegary food. Smoked Salmon and Jerky work really well for me. Foodwise, I also suggest taking at least one kick ass prepared meal that is still good to eat cold. Annalee and I did Falafal, which was super easy and really hit the spot! We also took soup to cook on the coleman, I liked soup there a lot, because sometimes a solid meal doesn't sound to good, but sipping on soup put me in heaven! -

Re: Burning Bee Tips for New Bees
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 8:10 AMSOUP does sound like it wood rock out there.....I have never brought any, but will this year. Its how I will get my veggie intake. Im thinking the aseptic single serve ones you can get in the health food stores, like the cream of broccoli and potato leek made w/soy.
My kick ass prepared meal has always been pizza.....Im changing that to falafel this year. :)

Re: Burning Bee Tips for New Bees
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 8:17 AMvery good tips!
I didn't really like dill pickles, but after BM last year i love them, I was even drinking the juice straigt out of the jar. I don't think we cooked a single meal out there, just brought things that didn't need preparation.
DRINK LOTS OF WATER. Hydration is key, and don't for get to replenish the salts you sweat out, especially if your playing or working hard.
A day to aclimate to the heat, elevation, dry air and playa dust seemed like it helped most people. Just take it easy on your first day. I'm pretty used to the conditions, plus I was out there for a 36hour work session the weekend before so that may have helped, I was too busy working all day and all night to notice much. -

Re: Burning Bee Tips for New Bees
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 8:22 AMone of our favorite meals we had was cold ravioli things we got at costco. Fully planned on heating them up, but they were divine cold. -

Re: Burning Bee Tips for New Bees
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 10:07 AMI have always loved pickles and drinking the juice..am I weird or just meant for Burning Man??
Great Tips! Last year at HSMF I pre-made turkey chili and mac n cheese and froze it for easy re-heating in boiling water and keeps your cooler cooler. Is that too much of a waste of water?? -
-
Re: Burning Bee Tips for New Bees
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 10:17 AMnot a waste of water, but you may find you want to eat them cold. Pre made food in bags is a great way to heat up premade meals! -
-
Re: Burning Bee Tips for New Bees
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 11:00 AMLiz, That turkey chili was the BOMB at hsmf last year!! I ate a wicked big bowl of that!

Tue, April 15, 2008 - 11:06 AMor you can just do the dashboard heat-up trick -

Re: Burning Bee Tips for New Bees
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 11:13 AMYES great point mags. This is my NV microwave! I do this a LOT when I'm working in the field in BFE. Many a times my ONLY choice for food is from the gas station. In those times I'll buy a frozen burrito and throw it on the dash (still in bag-its own personal greenhouse), by lunch time its steaming hot, even if its in the teens outside. I'll often put food on a drill rig exhaust too, but don't have those nearby on the playa.
We want to build a solar oven to try out this year. Wanted to do it last year but never got around to making one. We used one to heat coffee on one of our work days on the playa and it worked good. -
-
Re: Burning Bee Tips for New Bees
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 11:30 AMI made one of those solar ovans outta a carboard box and tin foil when I was a girl scout and we made pizza! It was so so pizza, but lots of fun!!! -

Re: Burning Bee Tips for New Bees
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 1:55 PMPINEAPPLES......cut up in tiny pieces....and im thinking of bringing strawberries too.........
Oh sooo great in the morning......
Baby wipes a must have....
And if you have long hair you might want to braid it up...because the windy dust makes many a dread......and fast
Seperate big plastic bags with your costumes for the day.... sealed and all ready to go...is great
parasols are good for the sun but not for the wind.....im bringing 1 but only using it when i can.....maybe put lights on it and use it at night.... -

Re: Burning Bee Tips for New Bees
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 2:23 PMGlitter Bee knows the score.....Pineapple is definitely my fave fruit to have out there!!
Heres one I just learned that I have yet to use:
Bring an extra big blanket that you wont use for sleeping and cover up your bed in your tent when not in use. I bet that helps with the dust bed a LOT!
Long hair, its true, it will be like getting dipped in clay if you let it free for the week.
Its OK, but you will have to get a nice trim when you get home.
Thats why I put my hair in a bun for the entire week w/ conditioner barely washed out (not even the leave in....I just use the gnarly stuff and half rinse out.)
Then I add the yarn head.
I was thinking about doing the hair weave thing, but my scalp is so sensitive it would drive me bonkers. The pony tail is more comfortable fo rme, but I have an unusually sensitive scalp.
~Best to keep your feel covered in boots out there and not do the bare foot sandal thing, unless your name is Kevin Quandt.
I Give nice vinegar foot baths, so that will be my gift to you all this year!!
But you still want to keep your feet covered up or they will probably crack and OUCH
Lots of fresh socks = YESSSS -
-
Re: Burning Bee Tips for New Bees
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 2:43 PMI never had any issues with my feet crackin, and i was even barefoot part of the time. But I have heard that from a lot of people. I wonder if I'm used to it or if its my hawaiian blood?
I only took one shower out there and that was due to being body glittered. I like to shower every day if i can so that was kinda unusual for me. But i never really felt dirty, just dusty. -
-
Re: Burning Bee Tips for New Bees
Wed, April 16, 2008 - 6:42 AMI think generally women have drier skin than guys, esp the feet. I have to pamper my feet or else Im in trouble.
I love camp showers, but yeah, only took 3 the whole week whereas at High SIerra I will take 4. Playa does do wierd things.....but like they say out there, thats no excuse for not slappin on some deoderant, hippy! haha
It is like wierd talcum powder.
Ancient fish poop.
Claypool of Les. -

Wed, April 16, 2008 - 8:24 AMas long as i have less claypool in my mouth I'm happy! -

Re: Burning Bee Tips for New Bees
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 8:59 PMThanks for the tips. I've come across all of those luckily. I'm feeling good. I'm not going to go into the Heebee's food situation, but I feel good. It would probably be pretty easy to do some fondue huh. I think I definitely want to stay away from milky things out there though. I think I'm starting to have issues with milky cheese things. I could to the due though for sure.
Ever had chocolate dipped lobster? Heaven in ya mouth
Lee I'll tell Less you want to talk to him
I think PT has poisoned my veins -

Re: Burning Bee Tips for New Bees
Fri, April 18, 2008 - 2:19 PMPT is the National Enquireer of the internet......VERY poisoning, indeed!
Im really really going to try hard to back off to the Kevin and Mags style posting, just under the ones Im involved with and try to stay out of the others. Been doing pretty well, but got a ways to go til I reach my PT diet goal!!
These are tips that are gone over again and again out there.....but its nice to have them on WB for us to remember easily.
Also, something I learned from last year: IF youre having a bad one (I ate too much lucy last year one night) dont bee afraid to wake up another bee for help. I was so scared to wake anyone up , I had the hardest time.......Everything was better once Lucy, Lee and Kat were up but until then i was in hell. All I had to do was just ask for some help. I couldnt seem to get thru to other campmates.....It was a wierd night and everyone was in their own head.....and my own head was the LAST place I needed to be. hAHAHAA
Why is it that Mushrooms just work for me so well out there???? I think its the nature.....
Basically, beware of eating acid alone at BM. hahaha -
-
Re: Burning Bee Tips for New Bees
Fri, April 18, 2008 - 2:24 PMNothing like a threesome with Lucy and Molly!

Re: Burning Bee Tips for New Bees
Sun, April 20, 2008 - 10:48 AMI totally agree, the more open info out there, the better. I havent been having any probs with Lucy lately, luckily, but its good to know that people are always there for you, especially in situations when you need em.
Also heard that the water trucks that roll around sprinkling the ground to keep the dust down, can be used for a quick shower. I'm not doing that, well maybe once just for the fun it. -
-
Re: Burning Bee Tips for New Bees
Sun, April 20, 2008 - 11:28 AMI personally would stay away from the water trucks. I heard that its not the most pure water, might be a little dirty in some ways that I dont want close to my mouth. I would much rather dump my water on my head and just let it hit the playa. The puddle evaporates quick, its not much of a splash to leave a big puddle, and its not soapy contaminated water. Not a big deal.
I always come home with some extra water, so using a 1/4 gallon to dunk your head here and there is not a big waste if you brought it. I usually bring 7 gallons of purified water, and 5 gallons of tap water for bathing/shower tub/splashes, at least. -
-
Re: Burning Bee Tips for New Bees
Sun, April 20, 2008 - 11:34 AMDylan, about Lucy, i too have been just fine with her lately. BUt you still never know when youre going to eat a strong part of a paper. I had dropped on some paper pre event (I know there are better ways but i was in a bind) and would snack pieces of thepaper. Well I snacked too big of a piece in the right spot. I think Im so cool and mighty, but never underestimate the power of the dark side of the force.....hahaha
Burnign Man can be a more lonely place, a more vast place where your consciousness can go to new extremes.....so as tough skinned as we think we are, you just still have to bee prepared to get help if you need it. I worked thru it anyway, but it would of been better with some extra luv and familiarity. -

Re: Burning Bee Tips for New Bees
Sun, April 20, 2008 - 4:38 PMGOGGLES:
These are the ones I got and they rock.
www.burningmangoggles.com/allstarkit.htm
Check out the whole list of goodz. I like these though, cuz they can go over my glasses. Even if i didnt wear glasses, I would still wear these, because the vision os really good, as opposed to single eye lenses. When you change from clear to smoked for daytime, its one fellow swoop, not 2 seperate pieces. Sometimes you want them at night for riding bikes across playa, esp. if you wear contact lenses. They moisten up your eyes and block wind at ngiht, so theyre not just for dust storms!
These are really light weight and comfortable. Forget fashion, go for well working comfort when it comes to these baybees !! -
-
Re: Burning Bee Tips for New Bees
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 11:13 AMawesome, thanks for the suggestion! i gotta have ones that fit over my glasses!!! and i don't think my OTGs are gonna keep out the dust, so these look great! :) -

Tue, April 22, 2008 - 11:23 AMold ski goggles work great, being a skifreak I have a bunch of jacked ones hanging about -

Re: Burning Bee Tips for New Bees
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 2:54 PMFor sure. You never know when you'll get knocked in the head. I dont think I am going to take the random wack trip spur of the moment style. If I am going to be healing w/ da heebee's, I am not going to want to spread trip rays on people. I'm going to have to talk to Scooter about this sitch. I know this is going to be super intense. I dont really think I am wanting an experience where I end up naked in a puddle of mud saying goblty goop.
I am really glad that I know people with big vast reservoirs of love like you all and the heebee's.
Ya to skifreaks! -

Re: Burning Bee Tips for New Bees
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 11:26 AMBumpin this thread up!!!!
I just found out that my highschool sweetheart Wendy might be coming with us!!!!!!!
best news ever!
SOOOO, Im also trying to get her to stoke out our friend Jinny in Portland into coming with us. Wendy is in Seattle.
These 2 girls are like gold to me, huge important parts of my life, and every time Im at Bman I think about how much they would like it out there, just to DORK OUT!! To say you peeps would love them is an understatement.
So Im sending Wendy liniks to this tribe and sheeeeot. You can find her on my top friends on myspace as "Raevn"
If youre peaking in Wendy, welcome to Wood Beez Buzzin! (Kinda like Harley Nardz but less Sid Vicious) -
