Anyone heard of this?
Please explain to me?
Why would someone think this is ok?
On another note, what do you think about dance fusion? The good, bad and ugly....

Re: Bellynesian
Tue, June 5, 2007 - 11:16 AMHi Mali'o...
I just heard about the Bellynesian dance, but I have never seen it nore have taken classes in it.
but I do have a very certain opinion about any kinds of dance fusions: to do a dance fusion you have to be good at both dance styles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
its absolutely nonsense to be perfect in one dance style, then take a weekend workshop in a completely different dance, take two beginners steps out of it and then call it "Whatever Fusion"!

Tue, June 5, 2007 - 9:59 PMThere are a couple of earlier tribe threads devoted to this topic, in case you're looking for a something to read these chilly nights:
tribes.tribe.net/medethnol...52b1eb8449
tribalbellydance.tribe.net/thre...d673a
This a troublesome issue for me. I have a serious problem with the attitude of "Well, my intention is respectful, so I'm going to do whatever the hell I please," coming as I do from cultures that have been subjugated and simultaneously coopted. I see this attitude as symptomatic of a place of privilege, which generally (yes, I'm generalizing!) takes a view of "If it's not about me, it doesn't really matter."
OK, I'm stepping out of the limelight to go back and lurk in my hula notes ... -

Re: moRe: Bellynesian 2
Wed, June 6, 2007 - 12:26 AMThis got me thinking, so I'm back to footnote myself (ooh, that tickles!):
OK, so say someone has stepped on your foot. You say, "Ouch, that's my foot you're stepping on!" And the person who stepped on you says, "Oh, I didn't intend to hurt you -- I don't mean to step on your foot," but they keep their foot on yours all the same, they don't move it.
Now, the intention was not to hurt; but hurt took place.
The person knows that they're hurting you, but they keep the foot on, and the pain doesn't go away.
Does the "intention" not to hurt make it all right to keep stepping on your foot?
[This is a gross simplication of the situation, I know ... but it's late, and this is the best I can come up with at bedtime.]
;}
Any other thoughts?

most of those responses were typical which made me think about the difference in this two dance cultures.
they all need a short lesson in K A P U ...to put it in perspective. cause they truly aren't understanding.

Mine, too!!
And my heart ...
< yes kumu mark's kane could do the toostie roll or matrix in a men's kahiko competition piece(and get away with it) but, could mine?
< no. >
You might not know this, but Kumu Mark doesn't get away with anything, this year's Merrie Monarch scores are the proof. He got high scores for a very, very traditional, very non-Ho'omalu 'auana piece, and lower scores for everything else, for every little reason (e.g., "We don't allow our ipu to touch the floor without a pale.").
< and if she did, she'd get hella flack! >
On the same subject, not only does HE get flack -- so does his family, and so do his students. But the flack he gets is usually behind his back, which is just lame.
( hey i didn't forget... i'll call ya for a meet-up at kona club after the rep. concert )
Boo-hoo -- I have another concert to attend that night!! But if y'all promise to stay late, we'll come by and join up with ya!!
