45 dead as jet swerves off Madrid airport runway

Aug 20, 11:46 AM (ET)
By HAROLD HECKLE

MADRID, Spain (AP) - A Spanish airliner bound for the Canary Islands swerved off the runway and caught fire during takeoff from the Madrid airport on Wednesday, killing at least 45 people, the Interior Ministry said.

Nineteen of the 173 people on board were seriously injured, according to statements from the airline and the ministry.

It is the height of the summer tourist season in Spain and Spanair flight JK5022 was bound for Las Palmas in the Canary Islands, a popular resort off West Africa, the company said.

Thick, white smoke rose above Barajas airport as helicopters and fire trucks dumped water on the plane, which ended up in a wooded area at the end of the runway at Terminal 4.

An official with the Madrid emergency rescue service SAMUR said crews were removing injured people and bodies from the MD-80, calling it a "catastrophe." The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to give his name.

The plane was an MD-82 carrying 173 people, Spanair said.

The newspaper El Pais said the plane was delayed an hour by technical problems. It managed to get slightly off the ground but crashed near the end of the runway, the paper said.
The 7 Laws, an outline for clarity by SRC

THE SEVEN LAWS
by Silverstar Red Crow © 2008
(Based on the Torah & work of the Theosophists: Leadbeater, Bailey and Blavatsky)

THE SEVEN UNIVERSAL LAWS

1.	The Law of Reincarnation or Perpetual Transmutation
All life within and including the Universe Itself participates in the life-cycle of birth, death and rebirth. There is no true separation between life and death—they are always morphing from one to the other.
2.	The Law of Relativity
All things in the Universe are relative depending on dimension, intention and actual action taken. LEAVE ROOM FOR RE-INVENTION!
3.	The Law of Vibration
Everything is alive and is constantly emanating Life-Force Energy. There is no separation between “organic” or “inorganic” life-forms.
4.	The Law of Polarity
All things have opposites: light and shadow, good and bane, female and male.
5.	The Law of Rhythm
The movement of everything has purpose and is moving in choreographed unison, creating the interconnection of all life-forms.
6.	The Law of Karma or Cause and Effect
Action=Interaction=Reaction
All actions have repercussions, both good and bane, all of the time.
7.	The Law of Gender
The spark or “genesis of life” demands the energy of polarity or correspondence to make itself manifest in the physical.

THE SEVEN NOAHIDE LAWS
These laws are prohibitions to the following behaviors and/or actions:

1.	Idolatry
All seekers must recognize the existence of One Divine Source, or God-Mind, and the Universe the One has created to live a righteous life.
2.	Murder
All people must revere life as a holy gift from God. To take life prematurely through neglect, coercion, manipulation, sport or because of cruelty is simply wrong. Taking a life because of self-defense or in defense of the helpless is not murder, though this kind of killing is to be avoided and cannot take the place of simple justice.
3.	Theft
Do not take what does not belong to you! This law includes manipulation of funds from others through hiding, embezzlement, or lying. It also alludes to the prohibition of adultery and slavery, for they both imply stealing the state of fidelity of hearth and home and personal freedom.
4.	Sexual Promiscuity
Healthy sexuality is an important component to living a balanced and fulfilling life. This prohibition deals with improper sexual behavior which puts the participants and/or their loved ones in harm’s way. This also refers to the importance of personal freedom and choice within sexual relationships. No one person should dominate another with cruelty or bargain for other’s sexual favors.
5.	Blasphemy
People should not use the Holy Names of God, regardless of origin, language, or WorldView in vane. This includes using the Sacred Names to curse or damn other people, places or things.
6.	Cruelty to Animals
This prohibition includes the improper slaughtering of animals for food. The hunter or butcher must understand the suffering and great sacrifice of the animal about to become food for another living creature, in order to swiftly kill the prey and preserve the psychic quality of life-giving nutrition. When an animal’s life is taken in anger, both the animal and the human eating it will suffer. This law also states one should not offer a creature as sacrifice to the Gods before eating it, constituting an improper blood sacrifice.
7.	Just Laws
All righteous people need to have a developed and compassionate view of justice. This law speaks of living a good life through practicing integrity, honesty and respect. BALANCE AT ALL COST! This law alludes to the need for fairness in taxation as well.

THE SEVEN COSMIC RAYS

1.	1st RAY = Will and Power (The Will of God)
Through using and tempering the personal will, humans learn to generate power. This action is different from channeling other’s wishes, intentions or messages; it is an individual inner experience. The power generated by the will can be used efficiently when employed by leaders and teachers, using their own will-power as a tool of example. The best teacher demonstrates power through examples of restraint and kindness, over brute force.
2.	2nd RAY = Love and Wisdom (Wisdom of God)
When employing humanity’s ability to empathize, the seeker realizes the gift called LOVE. Through love, the seeker finds the meaning of one’s true Higher Self and the wisdom it offers. This wisdom imparts the reality of all creation being linked together as one breathing, ever-expanding art form.
3.	3rd RAY = Active Intelligence (Love of God)
Everything has history; all creation experiences the life-cycle and remembers the experience in great detail. It is the capacity of all things to know their origin. Through this link to “timelessness”, humans are given the capacity to intellectually discern, which translates into the abilities to answer their own questions through the skills of observation. This Ray teaches humanity the importance of using the minds naturally created for and by them. This also teaches one not to judge the mental capacity of another unjustly. Often, the quiet ones know the most…
4.	4th RAY = Harmony through Conflict (Purity of God)
This Ray teaches the seeker balance. Balance creates harmony regardless of the chaos of the outer world. This reality teaches humans to harness the energy of chaos for good, for rapid and profound change. Through swift and proper action, chaos is transformed into calm.
5.	5th RAY = Natural Science (Science of God)
Science is God. All the answers in this vast Universe are encoded in the life-force energy all creation is composed of. Through observation of the cycles of the Natural World, humans are given the insight of the working duality of macrocosm and microcosm. Through knowing the workings of both “inner and outer space”, humanity learns the secrets of balance, abundance and sustainability.
6.	6th RAY = Devotion (Peace of God)
Through the discipline of devotion, service and Divine Give-Away, the seeker creates a powerful energy which inspires The Self to grow in an upward fashion called Spiral Evolution. The devotee gives full attention to The Divine not because of pride in accomplish or desire for positive Karma, but out of genuine love. Through this selfless act, the seeker is rewarded with additional movement and growth, organic and profound.
7.	7th RAY = Ceremonial Order or High Magick (Freedom of God)
Living one’s life with order as one’s major tool creates harmony of a deep nature, which flows and grows to all levels of one’s life. Once a seeker realizes the power of order, a psychic opening occurs in one’s consciousness. This process is a happening of heightened sensitivity, alighting the realization of the importance of ritual or repetitive movement and/or action which creates the friction needed for the manifestation of desire. When this power is focused and used for the Highest and Greatest Good of humanity—through intensive thought, movement, chanting, prayer, energywork—growth, healing and insight are had.

Just in from Joan...

Marilyn Freeman, 82, Port St. Lucie, Florida.

Mom has finished the first of 3 sections of the radiation. They will call me some time this week for the 2nd part to start. The 2nd and 3rd parts will be around a month to finish. She is getting very weak for the treatments. She has really bad diarrhea from it and therefore becoming weak. I sure hope the treatments are the end of it and she does not have to go into surgery. I really do not think she is strong enough for that.

The 2nd part is in a small area for the treatments and they may use less radiation. We will know more when they call. This could make her diarrhea less. She has had good days and bad. She is going though bad this week. She has been saying her pain is worse. It's hard to say. I think she is just weak from all the visits.

Thanks for the prayers...

Love Joan

Charter bus crash north of Dallas kills 13

Aug 8, 9:41 AM (ET)
By LINDA STEWART BALL

SHERMAN, Texas (AP) - A charter bus carrying Vietnamese worshippers on a pilgrimage ran off a highway overpass north of Dallas and plunged onto a roadway below early Friday, killing at least 13 people and sending at least 24 to hospitals.

The bus ran off U.S. 75 about 12:45 a.m. and skidded across a guard rail before falling 15 feet and landing on its side. The bus carrying 55 people from Houston to Missouri may have blown a tire, but officials were still investigating the crumpled wreckage littered with luggage, shopping bags and scattered clothing.

"You can't tell anything anymore," police Lt. Robert Fair said from the scene. "We're not ruling out anything right now."

The bus came to rest on its right side in the northbound lane of an access road. Workers righted the wreckage and loaded it onto a flatbed truck.

Police said 12 people died at the scene and another died at a Dallas hospital. At least five more were hospitalized in critical condition.

The accident happened less than a mile from the spot where a trucker crossed the median and killed 10 people five years ago.

The injured, including the driver of the bus, were rushed to several hospitals.

It was unclear if weather played a role in the accident. A National Weather Service meteorologist said there was some light rain in the area around midnight.

Northbound traffic on the highway was shut down as ambulances and helicopters used the roadway and median to ferry the injured to hospitals.

KHOU-TV quoted a Galveston/Houston archdiocese church official as saying many of those on the bus were from the Vietnamese Martyrs Church of Houston and were on their way to a religious festival in Carthage, Mo. At least four translators were brought to the scene, the Herald Democrat of Sherman reported.

The annual Marian Days Festival attracts tens of thousands of Vietnamese Catholics to Carthage from around the country each year.

Sherman is about 65 miles north of Dallas.

Suspected cholera outbreak in Philippines kills 21

Aug 6, 4:14 AM (ET)

By OLIVER TEVES

MANILA, Philippines (AP) - A suspected cholera outbreak in a remote southern Philippine township has killed 21 people and sickened at least 50 others, the mayor and the Red Cross said Wednesday.

Most of the victims of the outbreak in several mountainous hamlets near Palimbang town in Sultan Kudarat province were children, Mayor Samrud Mamansual said. The area is about 600 miles south of Manila.

Mamansual blamed poor water supplies and inadequate sanitation. He said the first deaths were reported Monday in the village of Milbuk among members of the Manobo tribe who get their drinking water from a waterfall.

Mamsansual, speaking by telephone, said the municipal government delivered intravenous drips and medicines to control diarrhea.

Red Cross volunteer Marilou Torres said those who died succumbed to severe dehydration, but laboratory tests were yet to confirm it was cholera. All victims suffered from diarrhea and vomiting, typical symptoms of the disease.

The municipal health officer, who was visiting the affected villages, could not be reached by cellular phone.

The area is so remote that it takes five hours by car to reach Palimbang from General Santos City, the nearest medical center 100 miles away, plus another four-hour hike to get to the villages, Torres said.

She said the Red Cross discovered the cases after trying to check a report that seven people had died from hunger in Palimbang.

She said at least 15 people died in Milbuk. Four other nearby villages also were affected.

A similar outbreak in the neighboring village of Ligaw three months ago killed eight people and sickened 60 others.

Cholera outbreaks are not uncommon in the Philippines, especially during the rainy season.

Cholera is a severe gastrointestinal disease often caused by consuming water or food contaminated with fecal matter.

Strong quake shakes Southern California

Strong quake shakes Southern California

Jul 29, 3:21 PM (ET)
By ROBERT JABLON

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A strong earthquake shook Southern California on Tuesday, causing buildings to sway and triggering some precautionary evacuations. No immediate damage was reported.

The jolt was felt from Los Angeles to San Diego, and slightly in Las Vegas.

Preliminary information from the U.S. Geological Survey estimated the quake at magnitude 5.8, centered 29 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles near Chino Hills in San Bernardino County. Ten aftershocks occurred in the next dozen minutes, including three estimated at 3.8, and the U.S. Geological Survey estimated the quake was about 8 miles below the earth's surface.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said there were no immediate reports of damage or injury in Los Angeles. San Bernardino County fire dispatch also had no immediate reports of damage.

The quake struck at 11:42 a.m. PDT. Buildings swayed in downtown Los Angeles for several seconds.

Workers quickly evacuated some office buildings.

"It was dramatic. The whole building moved and it lasted for a while," said Los Angeles County sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore, who was in the sheriff's suburban Monterey Park headquarters east of Los Angeles.

In Orange County, about 2000 detectives were attending gang conference at a Marriott hotel in Anaheim when a violent jolt shook the main conference room.

Mike Willever, who was at the hotel, said, "First we heard the ceiling shaking, then the chandelier started to shake, then there was a sudden movement of the floor."

Chris Watkins, from San Diego, said he previously felt several earthquakes, but "that was one of the worst ones."

Delegates and guests at a cluster of hotels near the Disneyland resort spilled into the streets immediately after the quake.

The 1994 Northridge earthquake under Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley was magnitude 6.7. It killed 72 people, injured more than 9,000 and caused $25 billion in damage in the metropolitan area.

The damage created by an earthquake depends greatly on where it hits. A 7.1 quake - much stronger than Northridge - hit the Mojave Desert in 1999 but caused only a few injuries and no deaths.

California is one of the world's most seismically active regions. More than 300 faults crisscross the state, which sits atop two of Earth's major tectonic plates, the Pacific and North American plates. About 10,000 quakes each year rattle Southern California alone, although most of them are too small to be felt.

---

Associated Press Writer Thomas Watkins in Anaheim contributed to this report.

South Texas gets first look at Dolly's damage

Jul 24, 11:44 AM (ET)

By CHRISTOPHER SHERMAN
BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) - Residents and recovery teams began fanning out across south Texas Thursday and cars crept along roads with darkened stoplights as the region got its first look at the destruction left by Hurricane Dolly.

Traffic picked up on local roads littered with debris as people emerged for the first time in more than 24 hours after Dolly's soaking rains and punishing winds. After crashing ashore on South Padre Island, the storm ripped roofs from homes, flooded roads and downed power lines, but the Rio Grande levees officials had feared could breach held strong.

In Brownsville's Cameron Park colonia, residents were clearing their yards of shingles and tree debris while mosquitoes feasted. But homes were still standing, and residents were thankful the damage wasn't as bad as they feared.

"I thought it was going to be worse than it was," Moses Izaguirre said.
Still, the danger had not passed as power lines hung across streets and water surrounded neighborhoods. Residents should stay at home "unless it's life or death," said Tony Pena, Hidalgo County emergency coordinator.

During the course of the storm, authorities rescued about 30 families from high water in Cameron County and power, including to the 911 emergency call system, remained out to about 60 percent of customers in the county.

"The power grid is not doing too well," said Hidalgo County spokeswoman Cari Lambrecht.

Hurricane Dolly slammed ashore as a Category 2 hurricane midday Wednesday and then loitered over deep south Texas as a tropical storm, dumping as much as a foot of rain in places and bringing 100 mph winds. Those winds had dropped by half Thursday morning, and forecasters said the tropical storm warning for the Texas coast would likely be canceled later in the morning. The storm was expected to break up by Friday.

By 11 a.m. EDT, the tropical storm was centered near Laredo with maximum sustained winds of around 45 mph.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry declared 14 south Texas counties disaster areas and sought federal disaster declarations, and was scheduled to fly over the region Thursday afternoon.

While the rain set records in Brownsville's Cameron County - ranging from six to 12 inches with another three to seven expected overnight - they did not appear to pose the threat to the Rio Grande's levees that had been feared.

The river rose steadily through the day in Brownsville, but did not reach flood stage.

"We're not experiencing any issues with the levees right now," Sally Spener, spokeswoman for the International Boundary and Water Commission, said late Wednesday. "The water is just not high enough."

But the torrential rains and fierce winds that lasted much of the day in south Texas still caught some by surprise.

By Wednesday afternoon, the community of Laureles north of Los Fresnos had been reduced to a chain of sunken islands, separated from the main roads by floodwaters of two feet or more in places.

Mailboxes barely peaked above murky, wind-swept waters where neighborhood loops met county roads.

Pedro Zuniga, his wife and their six children fled their mobile home for the comparative safety of a relative's wood-frame house next door. That home's owner had already left to take shelter in another relative's brick house.

Peering out the back door at the trailer he deemed too wobbly for his family, Zuniga said the water crossing his yard toward a canal behind was not as high as he had seen it a few years ago when it reached the base of his elevated trailer.

"We were going to go to a shelter, but they said there was only one so we decided to stay," said Zuniga's wife, Aleida Cardenas, 29. "But we didn't know it would be this bad."

Others did head to shelters. More than 5,000 people moved to public shelters in the three hardest-hit counties and the numbers were expected to grow Thursday as more people became stranded by floodwaters.

In Hidalgo County, Pena said there were several incidents late Wednesday requiring emergency personnel to rescue people from homes.

One family was left huddling in their topless house after winds blew the roof off, Pena said. Also, sheriff's deputies rescued a family of eight from Los Fresnos after floodwaters surrounded their home.

The only serious injury reported Wednesday occurred when the wind knocked a 17-year-old boy from a seventh-story balcony on South Padre Island. The boy suffered a broken hip, leg and a head injury but could not be transported off the island until about 5 p.m. The causeway linking the island to the mainland had reopened.

The island sustained some of the storm's heaviest damage and was still without power Wednesday night. Roofs were torn off hotels and homes, there was significant flooding that had begun to subside and debris was everywhere. A curfew was imposed for 8 p.m., Zamora said.

No deaths were immediately reported in Mexico, but Tamaulipas state Gov. Eugenio Hernandez said 50 neighborhoods were still in danger from flooding. About 13,000 people had taken refuge in 21 shelters, he said, but many had left for their homes by Thursday.

Business, gas stations and factories were open in Mexico Thursday, but about 90,000 people were still without power there. Roughly 2,500 police and soldiers were patrolling streets to prevent looting.

Earlier in the day, Mexican soldiers made a last-minute attempt to rescue people at the mouth of the Rio Grande, using an inflatable raft to retrieve at least one family trapped in their home. Many people farther inland refused to go to government shelters.

Many Texans heading north were stopped at inland Border Patrol checkpoints, where agents opened extra lanes to ease traffic flow while still checking documentation and arresting illegal immigrants, said sector spokesman Dan Doty. At one checkpoint on U.S. 77, smugglers were caught with nearly 10,000 pounds of marijuana.

The last hurricane to hit the U.S. was the fast-forming Humberto, which came ashore in southeast Texas last September.

The busiest part of the Atlantic hurricane season is usually in August and September. So far this year, there have been four named storms, two of which became hurricanes. Federal forecasters predict a total of 12 to 16 named storms and six to nine hurricanes this season.

---

Associated Press writers Elizabeth White in Brownsville contributed to this report.

Prayer Request

Just in from Frodo....
Here is a request from SisterSpirit member Betty:

Wendy, 20's, Portland.

My daughter-in-law, Wendy, has aplastic anemia, for which there seems to be only potentially effective treatments. Would it be possible to add her name to the Pagan Prayer list?

It seems that in her bone marrow, new cells are not being produced. It won't help her to eat such things as liver as it only helps existing cells to grow -- those she is not producing.

The family would greatly appreciate prayers for her recovery.

Thank you,

Betty

Throughout history, humanity has looked to chronological signposts to help us predict and make order of the universe. Perhaps the greatest signpost of the past millennium is approaching quickly. This signpost, revealed by the ancient Mayan Long Count Calendar is 2012. The 2012 Conference will show that these many ancient traditions are saying that the Great Shift of the ages is at hand. These people of the past predicted that the world that humanity is about to enter will be so different than ours that this coming shift promises to change everything including the way we think and live our lives. The scholars attending this conference will present the research revealing that a multiplicity of ancient cultures in different lands have all pointed to the time period around 2012 as the year that things will change. Those cultures include the Mayan, the Incan Elders, the Hopi, the Aztecs, and 19th Century Europeans. There is a broader consensus that this particular year, above all others, will be the year of significant change. The presenters at this conference come from a whole spectrum of perspectives. Together they suggest that 2012 heralds a new age of awakening and expanded consciousness. The Mayan Long Count Calendar ends its current cycle in December of 2012. Instead of wallowing in fear of some dark future the presenters will show that we, the denizens of planet Earth are soon to witness the birth of the grandest era ever experienced by man. In the end the choice will be ours. How can the average person make sense of this Great Shift?

Tired firefighters battle 330 Calif. wildfires

Jul 6, 10:48 AM (ET)
By ROBERT JABLON

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Firefighters got a gift of a mild, mostly windless night and a forecast for similar conditions Sunday as they attempted to protect thousands of Santa Barbara County homes from a huge wildfire, one of more than 300 taxing their energy and resources around the state.

"The firefighters are stretched thin, they are exhausted," and some have gone days without sleep, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger as he visited a command post in the coastal region of Santa Barbara County, where nearly 2,700 homes were threatened by a four-day-old fire in the Los Padres National Forest. The blaze has blackened about 13 square miles.

Fires have burned more than 800 square miles of land and destroyed at least 69 homes throughout California in the past two weeks. One firefighter died of a heart attack while digging fire lines.

About 1,400 fires have been contained, but more than 330 still were out of control by Sunday morning.

The Santa Barbara County fire, now the state's top priority, was less active Saturday because of cooler, moist air, said county spokeswoman Pat Wheatley. And evening fell without the return of the late afternoon "sundowner" wind that had sent flames racing up to homes earlier in the week.

"We've been pleased by some cooperative weather," Wheatley said. "The 'sundowners' that we were afraid could happen did not happen much tonight so that gave us an opportunity to fight the fire without fighting the winds."

The fire was 28 percent contained, she said.

Over 2,600 homes were under mandatory evacuation orders Saturday and residents of 1,400 others were warned to be ready to flee if the flames gathered speed.

The fire, fueled by 15-foot-high, half-century-old chaparral, still had the potential to roll through a hilly area of ranches, housing tracts and orchards between the town of Goleta and Santa Barbara, keeping firefighters on their toes.

"They're feeling very good about this, but they are not taking this fire lightly at all," Wheatley said.

Temperatures dipped to around 60 degrees during the night, but were forecast to reach the high 70s later Sunday.

Nearly 1,200 firefighters were assisted by a DC-10 air tanker and other aircraft dumping water and fire retardant along ridges and in steep canyons.

Investigators think the fire, which began Tuesday, was human-caused. The U.S. Forest Service on Saturday asked for public help in determining who set it and whether it was sparked accidentally or on purpose.

Meanwhile, cooler weather helped crews attacking the two-week-old blaze that has destroyed 22 homes in Big Sur, at the northern end of the Los Padres forest, but the fire continued to grow slowly on all flanks Saturday night.
Full Image

The fire, which had blackened 111 square miles, was only 5 percent contained with full containment not expected until July 30, but morning fog that moved in from the sea helped prevent it from advancing on Big Sur's famed restaurants and hotels.

"We're gaining ground, but we're nowhere near being done," said Gregg DeNitto, a spokesman for the U.S. Forest Service. "There's still a lot of potential out there. The fire has been less active the last couple of days. We've had favorable weather; they are taking every opportunity to get some line on it."

The weather was expected to become hotter and drier over the next couple of days, he said, with wind and temperatures rising and humidity dropping.

"The fire still has the potential for movement and the potential to get out of our containment lines," he said.

From Diane...

I would like to ask for more prayers for my cousin Chris 56. She is the one who survived 4th stage Ovarian Cancer and is now down with Pancreatic Cancer. I was told this is not unusual for someone to get after ovarian cancer. Because of the ovarian cancer her body cannot tolerate any treatments for the new cancer. She was told that she will bleed out (they will not be able to stop it eventually). She actually lives in Portland OR.

I just ask that you keep her in your prayers. I will put her on tribe but I have very little time to be on the computer lately so it takes me time to do it.

All love,

Parable of the Wind

The Parable of the Wind
(c) 1973 by A. Ray Elkins, Globe, Arizona

And now we should say unto thee unto these words, for we shall tell unto thee the parable of the wind.

For the wind said unto the rain, “I rule over thee, for I may cast the clouds anywhere that I choose, so therefore, I am the strongest of all.”

Yet, the ocean spoke forth, and said unto the wind, “Nay, for without me, where would you get your water? And where would the clouds form from?”

And the wind said unto the ocean, “Nay, I am the strongest, for I may take my water from where I please.”

Yet, the brook sat silent and said nothing, and went about its chore, day by day, providing the water that went forth unto the rivers and unto the oceans.

The wind could rule the ocean, and the lakes and the land. Yet the brook, much as the Seven Spirits of God, flowed onward through eternity.

We should say unto you, this is much as the same as that quiet place within your minds. The quiet place does not have to brag of that into which it can do, for it knows of that that it can do; so therefore, it goes about its day-to-day tasks. It stays hidden from others. Only on rare occasions, when you are alone, does it reach forth, not only giving you comfort, but comfort unto those of your loved ones. This in itself is the way of God, for in His quiet way He moves about the earth, touching man, always seeing and caring for his needs, always loving.

We say unto you, be as the brook. Go forth and give unto the people sweet water. Give forth that in truth, though sometimes truth is not given back. Give forth that in kindness, even though kindness is sometimes not given back. Give forth that in love, even though love is not given back. But when you give these things forth, all shall come back, for the seed you should cast upon the earth, or the ocean, or a brook, whether it be good or bad, shall all come back to its center. So therefore, give unto good thought unto your fellow man, and good thought shall return unto thee....

Swollen Mississippi defeats another levee

Jun 24, 9:30 AM (ET)
By CHERYL WITTENAUER

WINFIELD, Mo. (AP) - The swollen Mississippi River burst another levee Tuesday, submerging farmland and threatening a residential area whose occupants had already moved out in anticipation of a flood.

The levee failure near St. Charles comes as teams furiously fill sandbags to reinforce other waterlogged embankments guarding towns still waiting for the arrival of the huge river's flood crest.

Forecasters expect the last stretch of the bloated river to crest later this week.

"The spirits are tired, but they are still there and still solid," said Jo Anne Smiley, mayor of Clarksville, where makeshift sandbag levees are keeping the city's small downtown dry. "This is a community that will rise above this."

(AP) Law enforcement officers survey flooding over Highway 79 Monday, June 23, 2008, in Winfield, Mo....
Full Image

Smiley toured her town Monday with Gen. Robert Van Antwerp, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' chief of engineers. He said he was most concerned about agricultural levees up and down the river.

"I think what they have is holding well," Van Antwerp said. "Now, it's a matter of getting the water off of it."

But in the saturated Elm Point levee at St. Charles, Mo., about 30 miles north of St. Louis, two gaps allowed water to flood hundreds of acres of agricultural land. A mobile home park where about 700 people live near the Elm Point Levee had already been evacuated.

The constant pressure of the river remains the primary concern in Lincoln County, where officials asked for volunteers Monday to help fill 50,000 sandbags to fortify the 2 1/2-mile-long Pin Oak levee, an earthen berm that was so waterlogged that it was like "walking on a waterbed," said county emergency management spokesman Andy Binder.

Federal officials said they couldn't be sure it would survive through the river's crest at Winfield later in the week.

"They have a serious condition on their hands," said Travis Tutka, the Army Corps' chief of dam safety. "This will be quite a test of that levee."

If it breaches, the river will swamp 100 homes in east Winfield, as well as 3,000 acres of farm fields, several businesses and a city ballpark. A muskrat that burrowed a hole in the soft ground released a geyser of water, and officials said it took nearly six hours Monday to choke off the leak.

"There is no guarantee of performance, but we're fighting the good fight," Tutka said.

Only a handful of residents remained in east Winfield on Monday, after emergency workers went door to door urging them to evacuate. Among the holdouts was Sherman Jones, 56, who was all alone in his house except for his dogs, Mugsy and Junior.

"There is no place to go but the high school. I am not going to leave 'til my feet are wet," Jones said. "It's been a rough year, but we'll get through it."

(AP) Map shows flooded river status in Iowa; 2c x 3 1/2 inches; 96.3 mm x 88.9 mm
Full Image

In Foley, north of Winfield, floodwaters late Monday were filling the higher part of town. The east side of Foley was already submerged.

Not far from the Iowa state line, the river was down a few inches at Canton after cresting Sunday at 27 feet - less than a foot short of the record set during the Great Flood of 1993. Jeff McReynolds, the city's emergency management director, said a voluntary evacuation request remained in place in the town of roughly 2,500.

"We were right up there to our nostrils for about 24 hours," McReynolds said. "The concern from our operations center is they (residents) have seen the crest and think the river has come down and want to move back into their homes."

Down river from Quincy, the levee at Hannibal, Mo., was holding the slowly falling river out of the boyhood hometown of Samuel Clemens, who wrote as Mark Twain. Marion County Emergency Management Director John Hark said the city was already planning for its National Tom Sawyer Days, the early July festival celebrating Twain's work.

Hark said that with the river dropping, he could focus on other things that might discourage tourists - such as high gas prices.

"The flood, I think, is easier," he said.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Researchers have uncovered a new clue to the cause of Alzheimer's disease.

The brains of people with the memory-robbing form of dementia are cluttered with a plaque made up of beta-amyloid, a sticky protein. But there long has been a question whether this is a cause of the disease or a side effect. Also involved are tangles of a protein called tau; some scientists suspect this is the cause.

Now, researchers have caused Alzheimer's symptoms in rats by injecting them with one particular form of beta-amyloid. Injections with other forms of beta-amyloid did not cause illness, which may explain why some people have beta-amyloid plaque in their brains but do not show disease symptoms.

The findings by a team led by Dr. Ganesh M. Shankar and Dr. Dennis J. Selkoe of Harvard Medical School were reported in Sunday's online edition of the journal Nature Medicine.

The researchers used extracts from the brains of people who donated their bodies to medicine.

Forms of soluble beta-amyloid containing different numbers of molecules, as well as insoluble cores of the brain plaque, were injected into the brains of rats. There was no detectable effect from the insoluble plaque or the soluble one-molecule or three-molecule forms, the researchers found.

But the two-molecule form of soluble beta-amyloid produced characteristics of Alzheimer's in the rats, they reported.

Those rats had impaired memory function, especially for newly learned behaviors. Studies were also done on mice and when their brains were inspected, the density brain cells were reduced by 47 percent. The beta-amyloid seemed to affect synapses, the connections between cells that are essential for communication between them.

The research, for the first time, showed the effect of a particular type of beta-amyloid in the brain, said Dr. Marcelle Morrison-Bogorad, director of the division of neuroscience at the National Institute on Aging, which helped fund the research.

It was surprising that only one of the three types had an effect, she said in a telephone interview.

Morrison-Bogorad said the findings may help explain the discovery of plaque in the brains of people who do not develop dementia. For some time, doctors have wondered why they find some brains in autopsy that are heavily coated with beta-amyloid, but the person did not have Alzheimer's.

The answer may lie in the two types of beta-amyloid that did not cause symptoms.

Now, the question is why one has the damaging effect and not others.

"A lot of work needs to be done," Morrison-Bogorad said. "Nature keeps sending us down paths that look straight at the beginning, but there are a lot of curves before we get to the end."

Dr. Richard J. Hodes, director of the National Institute on Aging, said that "while more research is needed to replicate and extend these findings, this study has put yet one more piece into place in the puzzle that is Alzheimer's."

In addition to the Institute on Aging, the research was funded by Science Foundation Ireland, Wellcome Trust, the McKnight and Ellison foundations and the Lefler Small Grant Fund.

Please pray for the people of the Philipines today!

While the water still is rising in the Midwest USA (please keep the prayers flowing for Iowa and Missouri), the Pacific is floating away with a torrent of water from rain. Dozens of people have died in the Philipines and more rain is due today, according to the weather channel. I could not find any headlines on the internet about the situation (not surprising), but the entire island chain has been affected.
It is important to remember with natural disasters, DO NOT TRY TO CONTROL THE WEATHER! This knee-jerk reaction has devastating results (read Urban Shaman for edification) for the planet and all the creatures on/in/around Her. Please, focus your energy on the survivors and people trying to reach the light. Prayers for the land and animals are always wonderful additions.
Thank you for the work you do!
Mother Blessings,
SRC

Solstice Breaths together, Planetary Congruence

Greetings and celebrations and letting go on this Solstice Day. the day of the year with the longest period of sun light so that it appears that the sun (sol) stands still (sistit).

A day then the creatiave life forces are the stongest. A day of letting go and re-newal.

There is also at noon today, June 21, a Time Shift in the Galactic Mayan Calendar (from Judith Moore in New Mexico)

A Note going out from the Great Central Sun creating a sound harmonic that will shift the Earth into a new dimension.

One overtone aligning all the galactic suns, solar codes and the One Harmonic Source.

A perfect time for us to join with this tone - a communion of souls on Earth - so that the wave of a tone moves across the planet iand simultaneously joins with the Overtone from the Great Central Sun.

So whether you happen to get this before noon or after or even the next day... you can intend No Time... or the fluidity of time... and see yourself Joining in this planetary and galactic tone at noon on solstice - merging your heart with the heart of humanity and all life -
I imagine the the rocks and trees and animals know this within themselves and connect - hehhee as if they were not alreacy connected, silly me. :-)

some moments of stillness (sistit), feeling your breath, feeling the beating of your heart, feeling the earth and trees and waters, sensing your feet and toes feeling the floor and sensing the air that is touching your body, breathing in as if you are breathing in thru all of our skin - face and neck and back - fingers, between the fingers, ankles, toes and between your toes, the top of your head and feeling as if you are breathing in thru your heart center and out then through your back and this breath several times of breathing in and out thru every surface of skin on your body.. at one with the breath and heart beat of Gaia.
and then perhaps a sound, or a tone - a laugh or a sigh or a cry - an expression of of your uniqueness merging with every other heart and breath on the earth and with the heart and breath and tone from the Great Central Sun, thru our sun to each of us on this day - each one of us drinking the same Solar light and energy and re-newal.

and so it is, beloveds...
from eesha with smiles ~~

River rises again, along with worries in Mo., Ill: KEEP THE PRAYERS FLOWING!

River rises again, along with worries in Mo., Ill.

Jun 21, 4:20 PM (ET)
By CHERYL WITTENAUER

FOLEY, Mo. (AP) - Amid the battle to hold back the swollen Mississippi River, some towns in northeastern Missouri and Illinois got an unwelcome surprise Saturday as river levels rose higher than projected.

Recent levee breaks north of Canton, not far from the Iowa line, had allowed the river level to drop there and at other towns far north of St. Louis.

Officials knew it would rise again to expected crests during the weekend, but the amount of the increase caught them off guard.

The Mississippi reached 26.3 feet Saturday morning at Canton after dipping below 23 feet two days earlier, and it was expected to crest later in the day at 26.4 feet.

(AP) Foley Mayor Bill Thornhill and his wife Chris walk through town as the Mississippi River encroaches...
Full Image

That's still more than a foot lower than the record set during the Great Flood of '93.

However, the new Saturday morning reading was "a full foot higher than we expected it to be," said emergency management spokeswoman Monica Heaton. "The levee's fine, but the river did another unexpected thing last night."

Forecasters said Saturday afternoon that the river would crest several inches higher than expected in Hannibal and at Quincy, Ill., where it was set to crest late in the day more than 2 feet below the '93 flood peak.

"We're confident we can hold that and not have any issues," said Adams County's emergency management chief, John Simon. "It'll be another sigh of relief, but it's not over yet. We're not out of the water yet, no pun intended. We have a while to go."

Hannibal emergency management director John Hark said the river was well above flood stage but still about 3 feet below the record set in 1993. Before a levee break north of Hannibal in Meyer, Ill., allowed some water to drain out of the river last week, Hannibal was expecting a crest at or near the record.

Full Image

The crest was revised Saturday to 29.1 feet, set to arrive in Mark Twain's hometown sometime Sunday morning.

"We're keeping an eye on it," he said.

Downriver, near St. Louis, the latest federal forecast called for lower crests than predicted a day earlier. That was good news in hard-hit Lincoln County, where five levees had broken in the past three days.

At Foley, more than half of the homes in the town of 200 residents were under water, and townspeople were only beginning to decide whether to go back or move out.

Robert "Bobby" James, a union carpenter who moved to Foley a year ago, stayed after falling in love with the river. A few days ago, the handyman took out baseboards, flooring and carpet from his house as a pre-emptive move against the coming flood.

Even if the town floods again, he said, "I raise it 10 feet, put in new flooring, slap on five gallons of paint and I'm back in business."

National Weather Service meteorologist Ben Miller speculated that forecast models simply had been unable to account for the amount of water flowing into the Mississippi from the three rivers that saw major flooding in Iowa - the Cedar, Iowa and Des Moines rivers.

"Honestly, the models didn't do well with it because it was so far out of the range of normal," Miller said.

Miller was unaware of any levees facing renewed danger because of the river's unexpected rise, but said river towns need to be aware that the flood is a long way from over.

"Obviously any town protected by a levee is still under risk," Miller said. "The longer you have levees that have water up against them, the better the chance you have a levee being compromised."

Flooding and widespread storms this month have forced thousands from their homes and inundated towns and cities along rivers in six states, killing 24 and injuring 148 since June 6.

But while the swollen Mississippi has topped or broken through levees for hundreds of miles above St. Louis, the flooding hasn't led to any deaths or significant injuries in Missouri or Illinois.

(This version CORRECTS the first paragraph to say northeastern Missouri instead of northwest Missouri.)

National Sacred Places Prayer Days

From Suzan Harjo...

JUNE 20-21 SET FOR 2008 NATIONAL SACRED PLACES PRAYER DAYS

Washington, DC (6/16/08)—Observances and ceremonies will be held across the country on June 20 and 21 to mark the 2008 National Days of Prayer to Protect Native American Sacred Places. Times and places for public commemorations are listed in the following pages. Some of the gatherings highlighted in this release are educational forums, not religious ceremonies, and are open to the general public. Others are ceremonial and may be conducted in private. In addition to those listed below, there will be commemorations and prayers offered at sacred places that are under threat at this time.

“Native and non-Native people nationwide gather at this time for Solstice ceremonies. We honor sacred places, with a special emphasis on the need for Congress to build a door to the courts for Native nations to protect our churches,” said Suzan Shown Harjo (Cheyenne & Hodulgee Muscogee). She is President of The Morning Star Institute, which organizes the National Sacred Places Prayer Days. This will be the sixth of the National Prayer Days to Protect Native American Sacred Places. The observance in Washington, D.C., will be held on June 20 at 8:00 a.m. on the United States Capitol Grounds, West Front Grassy Area (see details under the Washington, D.C. listing below). The first National Prayer Day was conducted on June 20, 2003, on the U.S. Capitol West Lawn and nationwide to emphasize the need for Congress to enact a cause of action to protect Native sacred places. That need still exists.

“Many Native American sacred places are being damaged because Native nations do not have equal access under the First Amendment to defend them,” said Ms. Harjo. “All other people in the United States have the First Amendment to protect their churches. Only traditional Native Americans cannot get into the courthouse through the Freedom of Religion Clauses. That simply must change as a matter of fairness and equity. Native nations today have to cobble together protections based on defenses intended for other purposes. Those may permit lawsuits, but they do not provide a place at the table when development is being contemplated, and there is no guarantee that a lawsuit won’t be tossed out by the Supreme Court for lack of a tailor-made cause of action.”

The Supreme Court told Congress in 1988 that it had to enact a statutory right of action, if it wanted to protect Native sacred places. “Twenty years have passed without Congress creating that door to the courthouse for Native Americans,” said Ms. Harjo, “and some of these places cannot withstand many more years of legal and physical onslaughts.

“Native and non-Native people are gathering, again, to call on anyone who will listen to help protect these national treasures and to do something about this national disgrace that threatens them.”

Alabama: Wetumpka – Hickory Ground Ceremonial Ground

Traditional religious leaders of Oce Vbofv Cuko Rakko (Hickory Ground Ceremonial Ground) are continuing their work to negotiate for the protection of their pre-removal lands near Wetumpka, Alabama, and the dozens of human remains which have been disinterred without their consent. Although summer requires their attention to be focused on annual ceremonies to close the old year and start the new year, they have been able to find time to travel from Oklahoma to Wetumpka, Alabama, and participate in the negotiation sessions.

As other Muscogee people gather for ceremonies, the tragic case of the Hickory Ground site is discussed in wider and wider circles. Absent from the southeast for 170 years, and separated by 800 miles, many traditional people in Oklahoma were unaware of the destruction of sacred places and the looting of burials in their ancient homelands.

But discussions have also spread into the Christian community about the documented reports of complete disrespect for human remains and burials, and a growing consensus between the major Muscogee religious communities is that Muscogee common law regards a burial as a permanent resting place for the dead, to remain undisturbed.

The Inter-Tribal Sacred Land Trust is working to promote the protection of sacred sites throughout the southeastern United States, and to develop model policies and procedures, which could have applications across the nation. Contact www.itslt.org for more information.

Arizona: San Francisco Peaks

The San Francisco Peaks (Nuvatukaovi, Doko’oo’sliid) are sacred to Apache, Hopi, Hualapai, Navajo, Yavapai and other Native nations. The San Francisco Peaks are home to many sacred beings, medicine places and origin sites. Myriad ceremonies are conducted there for healing, well being, balance, commemoration, passages and the world’s water and life cycles.

The U.S. Forest Service and private business plan to expand the Snowbowl ski resort and to use recycled sewage to make artificial snow.

These plans could have a disastrous impact on the Native religions and people and on the water and health of the entire region. The creeping recreational development has concerned Native spiritual leaders and tribal officials for decades, but current plans far exceed the past activity at the resort. The area is within the Coconino National Forest.

Native nations are attempting to protect the San Francisco Peaks in court. The District Court ruled for the development in January 2006. In March 2007, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals overturned the lower court’s decision and ruled for the Hopi Tribe, Navajo Nation and others.

Setting new precedent for the protection of Native American sacred places, a three-judge panel of the Ninth Circuit ruled that the Forest Service violated the Religious Freedom Restoration Act and the National Environmental Policy Act in allowing the Snowbowl Resort to expand over 100 acres of rare alpine ecosystem, part of the area which is sacred to Native Peoples.

The federal government challenged that decision and petitioned the Ninth Circuit for rehearing en banc. Such petitions are rarely granted, but the Court granted the petition. The case was argued in front of the 11-judge en banc panel of the Ninth Circuit in Pasadena in December 2007.

To date, the Ninth Circuit has not issued the decision of the en banc panel.

Ceremonies and gatherings for Solstice prayer will take place on June 21 at the San Francisco Peaks. For more information and updates, contact Save the Peaks Coalition at http://www.savethepeaks.org.

California: Needles – June 20, Sunrise

The Ft. Mojave Indian Tribe remains in emergency need of support to protect the Maze and surrounding sacred site areas along the Lower Colorado River. The Maze is both a physical manifestation and a spiritual pathway for the afterlife. It has always been, and will always be, an integral and significant part of the Mojave way of life, beliefs, traditions, culture and religion. The Mojave will observe the Prayer Day in Needles at the Maze property, on June 20, and pray for continued guidance, preservation and national support to defend this sacred area.

Pacific Gas & Electric, by its ownership and operation of the Topock Natural Gas Compressor Station near Needles, California over the last 50 years, has polluted the groundwater under and around the Maze with hexavalent chromium, a toxic chemical that can cause numerous human and environmental health problems. PG&E, BLM and California Department of Toxic Substances Control proceeded with Interim Measures to contain and investigate the contamination, which included the construction of a new Treatment Plant within the Maze area and the drilling of many new wells in California and Arizona, on either side of the Colorado River. These, taken together, create continuing cumulative adverse impacts to the sacred landscape and tribal beliefs.

In 2005, Ft. Mojave filed a lawsuit seeking the removal of the plant, total restoration of the sacred area, an environmental baseline of prior to the plant's construction and any other actions that could serve to remedy the desecration. Settlement negotiations concluded in November 2006 aimed to achieve each of these goals and secure other remedies including repatriation of the sacred area to tribal ownership, sensitivity training for PG&E employees and contractors, a written public apology and reimbursement of past and future tribal costs.

Even though settlement was achieved, deep prayer is needed to ask for further understanding by PG&E and the agencies, particularly the BLM, as to the nature of this traditional cultural landscape and that they should not be afraid to acknowledge it as such during investigations, selection and implementation of the Final Remedy. Prayer is also needed to ask for forgiveness for any continuing desecration that may occur until the offending facilities are actually removed and that a Final Remedy is selected soon that respects the sacred nature of this area.

This issue is national in scope: the Maze has been officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978 and is formally recognized as nationally significant. Moreover, the failure of state and federal agencies to consider direct and indirect impacts to Native sacred places during pollution remediation activities remains a national problem requiring congressional oversight.
Colorado: Boulder - Native American Rights Fund, Friday, June 20, at 6:00 a.m.

The National Day of Prayer to Protect Native American Sacred Places is being observed at the Native American Rights Fund on Friday, June 20, 2008.

The public is welcome to a sunrise ceremony that will be held on NARF's front lawn beginning at 6:00 a.m. The program is expected to last for one hour with a prayer ceremony, speakers and a moment of silence to show concern for the sacred places that are being damaged and destroyed today.

The Native American Rights Fund is headquartered at 1506 Broadway in Boulder, Colorado. NARF extends an open invitation to its program and requests that participants bring a chair or a blanket to the front lawn and to bring food and/or beverages to share at the completion of the program.

As part of its mission, the Native American Rights Fund advocates for sacred site protection, religious freedom efforts and cultural rights. NARF attorneys and staff participate in local and national

gatherings and discussions about how to protect lands that are sacred and precious to Native Americans.

The Native American Rights Fund utilizes its resources to protect First Amendment rights of Native American religious leaders, prisoners and members of the Native American Church, and to assert tribal rights to cultural property and human remains, in compliance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.

Why should holy places be protected? How well do existing laws and federal agency regulations protect Native American places of worship? These and other questions will be addressed by NARF attorneys Steve Moore and Walter Echo-Hawk (Pawnee), who are active in the Medicine Wheel National Historic Landmark, The Devil's Tower, the Spirit Cave case, Kennewick Man case and the work of the Sacred Lands Protection Coalition, of which the Native American Rights Fund is a member. NARF also represents the Working Group on Native American Culturally Unidentified Human Remains.

The Native American Rights Fund is a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to assist American Indians, individuals and organizations in the legal representation and interpretation of federal Indian law. NARF is headquartered in Boulder, Colorado, with offices in Washington, D.C., and Anchorage, Alaska.
Kansas: Lawrence - Wakarusa Wetlands, Saturday, June 21, at Sunrise

(Storm date, in case of severe weather: Sunday, June 22, at Sunrise)

Save the Wakarusa Wetlands will observe National Prayer Day at Sunrise on Saturday, June 21, in the Wakarusa Wetlands south of Lawrence, Kansas. Save the Wakarusa Wetlands, Inc., is an association of Lawrence-based Haskell Indian Nations University alumni, students and community supporters. In case of lightning strikes, funnel clouds or other severe weather, the observation will take place on Sunday, June 22, at Sunrise.

The ceremony will be led by Mike Smith (Dine/Navajo) and is open to all who wish to add their prayers to save this sacred place from the highway builders. Jeremy Shield (Crow) will again sing a song to greet the sun. This year we will make special efforts to honor the return of otters to this place after an absence of more than a century!

Participants will ask for the protection of the Wakarusa Wetlands (aka, Haskell-Baker Wetlands), threatened by an eight-lane highway project approved by the Army Corps of Engineers, but delayed by state budget constraints.

After years of claiming the trafficway had been "de-federalized," in an attempt to render federal laws protecting Native sites inapplicable, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is back in the game. It recently announced its intent to adopt an outdated and severely flawed Corps of Engineers Environmental Impact Statement in order to expedite federal funds for the beleaguered project.

The announcement of a draft decision finally came last November and, as expected, FHWA went along with the state's plan to pave the Wetlands. A lawsuit is contemplated in response to the FHWA release of the formal "Record of Decision-ROD.” There is no money in the current state budget to construct the trafficway, but a new five-year highway plan will be debated in the Kansas legislature next year.

This sacred place is the last significant trace of the original Wakarusa Bottoms, an 18,000-acre prairie wetland environment that existed for thousands of years before whites drained and dammed the wetlands, which supplied Native peoples of the region with valuable medicines and important ceremonial items.

Elders have said the Creator caused the course of the Wakarusa River to go directly east toward the rising sun, in sharp contrast to the other rivers in the region, as a sign of sacred healing plants and herbs to be gathered there.

About 600 acres of the Wakarusa Wetlands was located directly south of the dorms at Haskell Institute. This last major remnant of the Wetlands was a crucial refuge where Native students from all across the country survived government efforts to exterminate their cultures in off-reservation boarding schools.

There, in the Wakarusa Wetlands refuge, young Indians from Maine to California sang forbidden songs, performed dances that were federally punishable with jail time and refused to let the authorities "kill the Indian" in them.

Parents and other tribal leaders camped, often for weeks, beside these Wetlands on the bank of the Wakarusa, awaiting permission from school officials to retrieve or at least visit their children. These elders used the Wetlands as an outdoor classroom to pass on final lessons about healing and other traditional knowledge.

Despite efforts to drain the Wetlands in the early twentieth century, and Haskell's loss of this property during the Eisenhower termination era, the Wakarusa Wetlands, like Haskell Indian Nations University itself, has survived and flourished. The entire historic Haskell campus, including the Wetlands, is being considered for designation as a National Historic Heritage area.

New Mexico: Mount Taylor

Mount Taylor is sacred to pueblos and tribes throughout the Southwest. The Acoma, Laguna and Zuni Pueblos, the Hopi Tribe and the Navajo Nation are actively seeking protections for Mount Taylor. They are concerned that the renewed uranium rush in the area will threaten the sacred mountain.

Mount Taylor, a lush forested mesa, is an ancient volcano west of Albuquerque, New Mexico, near Acoma and Laguna Pueblos and the town of Grants. At 11,301 feet, it is the highest point of the Cibola National Forest and the San Mateo Mountains.

An origin, worship and pilgrimage site, Mount Taylor is home to many sacred beings, waters and shrines. It also is a vital religious and subsistence hunting and gathering place.

On June 14, the New Mexico Cultural Properties Review Committee took emergency action to protect Mount Taylor from potential uranium mining for one year by designating it as a traditional cultural property.

The designation was proposed by the five pueblos and tribes, and the committee voted four to two to list 422,840 acres (660 square miles) of Mount Taylor on the state’s Register of Cultural Properties.

The designation lasts for one year, during which the committee will decide if Mount Taylor will have a permanent listing as a traditional cultural property. The TCP listing will not prevent mining or other development, but will halt expedited mining permits and will give the pueblos and tribes a voice in the permitting process when development is being considered.

Later this year, the Pueblo Cultural Center Museum will host an educational forum on the millennial history of the Pueblos and Tribes with Mount Taylor.
New York: Ganondagan State Historic Site, Friday, June 20, 11:45 a.m. to Mid-day

At Ganondagan State Historic Site in New York, there will be a Gahnonyoh (Thanksgiving), starting at 11:45 a.m. and ending at Mid-day, on Friday, June 20, under the Tree of Peace on Boughton Hill to protect sacred places and to promote world peace. “We invite spiritual leaders and the general public to join us on that day as we offer words of Thanksgiving or Gahnonyoh in Seneca,” says G. Peter Jemison (Seneca), who is the Caretaker of Ganondagan.

Ganondagan is the site of the seventeenth century town, once the capitol of the Seneca Nation, which was destroyed by the French in 1687. Today, it is the only historic site in New York dedicated to a Native American theme. Ganondagan is sacred to the Seneca People because nearby are the remains of Jikonhsaseh the Mother of Nations, who was the first person to accept the message of Peace brought by the Peacemaker, who united the Haudenosaunee or Five Nations: Seneca Nation, Cayuga Nation, Onondaga Nation, Oneida Nation and Mohawk Nation.
South Dakota: Bear Butte State Park, Saturday, June 21, Noon-4:00 p.m.

The public is invited to a gathering to honor Bear Butte on June 21, Saturday, from Noon to 4:00 p.m., on the National Day of Prayer to Protect Native American Sacred Places. The gathering coincides with World Peace & Prayer Day events at sacred sites across the continents of the world. All are invited to honor sacred places and to pray for peace and healing.

The gathering will take place at the Bear Butte State Park in the picnic area next to main parking lot. All are invited to share a community potluck and should feel free to bring a dish.

Bear Butte is sacred to more than 50 Native Nations, including the Cheyenne, Lakota and Arapaho Peoples, who own small sections of Bear Butte lands. Bear Butte is Nowawus/Noahvose (Holy Mountain) to the Cheyenne Peoples and Mato Paha (Bear Mountain) in the Lakota language. It has been used for thousands of years as a religious and commemorative place for vision quests, ceremonies of passage and renewal, pilgrimages, spiritual offerings and medicine gatherings.

The sacred mountain has been designated as Bear Butte State Park since 1961. Located in western South Dakota near the border with Wyoming, it rises from the Plains and overlooks the Black Hills and Bear Medicine Lodge (wrongfully called Devil’s Tower). Bear Butte was listed as a National Natural Landmark in 1965, as a National Historical Place in 1973 and as a National Historical Landmark in 1981. Bear Butte has been on the National Historic Landmarks threat level watch list since 2004.

The gathering at Bear Butte is being organized by Protect Sacred Sites, which urges all to sign a petition at www.ProtectBearButte.com to address a current threat to Bear Butte in a pending liquor license proceeding in Meade County, South Dakota. Meade County Commissioners will conduct a hearing on July 1, 2008, and are expected to make a final decision at that time. Protect Sacred Sites explains the threat this way:

“Bear Butte is a sacred mountain located eight miles east of Sturgis, South Dakota. Instead of praying in peace, traditional people are forced to pray with loud music from bars, motorcycle noise, flashing strobe lights over the mountain, and intoxicated campers nearby. Blatant disregard for the spiritual beliefs and ceremonies of Native People and the sacredness of this mountain is evidenced by the increased presence of bars, clubs, strobe lights, campgrounds that sell alcohol and a proposed stadium.

“For the past few years there has been a continual encroachment of bars and venues heading towards the sacred mountain. In the summer of 2006, the massive two-story bar opened just one mile from the mountain, called Sturgis County Line. Their goal is to have a 50,000-seat concert stadium and a RV park, in addition to the newly built two-story bar. These large scale commercial developments invite noise and cumulative impacts of increased traffic and travel, which all stand to adversely impact the natural serenity and tranquility needed for cultural, ceremonial and other visitations to Bear Butte. They will also negatively impact the experience of people who enjoy the spiritual, cultural, and natural resources at Bear Butte.”

President Joe A. Garcia of the National Congress of American Indians wrote to the Meade County Commissioners on June 11, stating that NCAI “opposes the Malt Beverage alcohol license application submitted by Broken Spoke Campground, L.L.C. Both the location and the character of the applicant are unsuitable for any alcohol licenses.” NCAI also urged the Commissioners to “use their broad discretion over alcohol licenses to begin government-to-government consultation with affected local Indian tribes to establish notification and consultation procedures for decisions that affect religious practice at Bear Butte and all American Indian sacred sites.”

The NCAI president also pointed out that the “federal government has already committed itself to consultation with tribes generally and more specifically whenever federal undertakings would affect historic properties of religious or cultural significance through an Executive Order titled Indian Sacred Sites and the National Historic Preservation Act. Furthermore, on September 13, 2007, the United Nations adopted the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Article 12 of that Declaration provides that indigenous peoples have ‘the right to maintain, protect, and have access in

privacy to their religious and cultural sites….’”
