Cider Jar

This is for Becky and Marissa, for the most part. If you'd like to know the tune, please ask me next time you see me. Just make sure that there are lyrics around for the verses 'cause I don't have them memorized!

CIDER JAR

Drink up the cider jar, pass us ‘round the jug
Drink up the cider jar, my lips are all tied up
Eat up all your smelt and loosen up your belt
And there’s still more Cider in the Jar

Drink up the cider, drink up the cider
For tonight we’ll merry be
We’ll knock the millstones over
And roll them in the clover
The ciders jarred and so are we

Drink up the cider jar, things are going far
Drink up the cider jar, we’re getting quite a start
My cheeks are getting redder and my eyesight’s getting better
And there’s still more cider in the jar

Chorus

Drink up the cider jar, get up off the mat
Drink up the cider jar, do you think I’m getting fat
I can’t get off me perch, and I’m not going to church
And there’s still more cider in the jar

Chorus

Drink up the cider jar, get it in your chest
Drink up the cider jar, it’s time I had a rest
There’s nothing like more cider, to make my smile grow wider
And there’s still more cider in the jar

  • We have our drinking song!!!!

    Becky/Beatrix
    • Incidentally...

This is the version I taught in my song class at northern and southern faire for about a decade. I discovered it in the music wing of the dublin library on a beaten old audio cassette tape.

This is the version with several lyrics re-written by myself because the irish accent of the original singer was so strong, niether I (nor any of my irish national friends) could understand about 1/3rd of the words!

      Enjoy!

      Steve
      • Thanks Steve! I actually got it from the Mongers 'cause they like to sing songs at times. Thanks so much for doing the leg work, and next time I'll actually credit you. ;)
        • I don't need the credit - just thought people might like the history of the song! ;)

I brought it back from Ireland (along with some others) about 15 years ago...and wow - you know the irish accent is pretty bad when a roomful of Irish college students can't make out a lot of what the guy is saying!

smelt...belt....church...perch...that's me not being able to tell a word of what was actually said! There was also something about going to county "?" to see my cousin "?" or parson "?"...who the heck knows!

It does make me thrilled as pie to see so many groups still singing it all over the place all these years later (I know the naughty minstrels use it as a staple in the thier song show). My own group hasn't sung it for years though! :)
