Starlen Baxter 1960-2008

For those of you who knew the man and haven't yet heard the bad news, I'm regret to tell you that Sunday, June 8, Starlen Baxter was found dead in his car. The apparent cause of death was suicide.

I don’t know any details beyond those. My mother called me with the sad news Monday night.

Services were held Wednesday, June 11, at the Corbin Funeral Home.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings. If you can think of anyone else who needs or would want to know, pass it on.

I know this is as much a shock to you as to me. Starlen was always such an ornery cuss, I thought he’d outlive the lot of us. Goes to show you can’t really know what’s in a man’s heart.

So go watch a Bugs Bunny cartoon and laugh your ass off. Make fun of Jerry Lawler. Play Big Black real fucking loud. Remember the good times. I always will.

My love to you all,
b.

Man, that's harsh. I hadn't seen or talked to him in ages but Starlen just seemed like one of those people who would always be around. I know you and he were tight at one point, Bill, comrades at art and all, so my condolences to you and to his friends and family. RIP Starlen...

Our reprieve is down-times, dormancy & the obvious dream-time from sleep--to make the organs of consciousness work w/One & against itself--in health: he lost his reprieve, then equalled it...__****
      • I am currently reading KADDISH (author Leon Wieseltier). This ancient word, probably protoSemitic, is usually defined as Holy. Think al-Quds, for Muslims, in the contemporary slate. The Hebrew prayer for he/she who has passed is called Kaddish. This book brings into its fullness all facets of the ideas in our forms of mourning. The author paraphrases Anselm--I don't know him, but this is interesting. "How sincere is the profession of your own insignificance if you believe that you are being heeded by that than-which nothing greater can be conceived?" In otherwords, saying yes to your G-d implicates the IDEAL, perhaps leaving Him/Her ON-High, whilst everywhere else is left vacant. I think it was the Rasta Scotty, who sang: "Thank G-d I'm not the worst." Life is for the Living, we've been fair-warned.

This news is just unbelievable. All the more unbelievable because I just saw Starlen in Lexington at the most (and last) Nine Pound Hammer show at the Dame.

He looked just as Starlen as ever.
    Really sad news.
