Well, what didja?

I had a grand ol' time. People exclaiming how this sorta thing couldn't have happened with such success in Lexington as recently as 5 years ago ("well, it coulda happened but it woulda been 20 people. and we all would have known eachother"). Kudos, everyone who participated, it was awesome, impressive, and fun!

My highlights: Pezhead's best, newest conglomeration of brilliance. Robert Bobbert. Performing with Rakadu down at the concourse at 5. Seeing Lexington's greatests supporters (all y'all!)

First, I must tell you that about two months ago when I first became acquainted with Chuck Clenney--he told me in an email "Relax, WRFL is in good hands". and it is. Since my inclusion on this project I have gotten to meet some absolutely stellar people who have the drive and passion in their eyes that we had so many years ago.

These people took this thing very seriously and I applaud them. you guys should be very proud of what you endeavored to do and what you accomplished.

    rock on.

I want to chime in and heap praise on Joseph Lloyd, (Rags).

He stage-managed the entire 12-hour FreeKY Fest, including arranging the great light show on Lexington buildings and the gobo of the original WRFL logo on the condo tower.

From my stage right vantage point during the Apples in Stereo set change, I saw him exhibit the most professional demeanor and attitude while still hustling (after 11 hours plus) up and down the stairs fixing problems and still thinking to give Mark B. and me hand cues on time...and we were super minor compared to the gear problems he was working.

He then loaded out the FreeKY Fest, returned to Rupp Arena to help load out Carrie Underwood/Keith Urban and um, ran into me at 7:30 a.m. the next morning walking down Broadway with three coffees in a Starbucks tray on his way to load IN the Blue Man Group at Rupp.

      Thank you, thank you Joseph!

I had a fantastic time from Pezhead to the wee hours of Saturday night/Sunday morning, and I couldn't have been more impressed with the entire set up if I had been twins. Impressive turnout, impressive set up, impressive everything. You guys even thought to put up barriers so people didn't fall over the wall onto Vine Street! A huge huge huge thanks from those of us who got to reap the benefits of your labors -- how about doing another one next year? har har.

One of the greatest events in the history of WRFL and Lexington, in my opinion. I was blown away. I walked around pretty wide-eyed all day. Just to see that many people out for a RFL event, and not being harassed was beautiful.

I still missed meeting some of you face to face (dammit Jack Kirk), but i finally met Kakie and Mark (thank you Amberly), legendary names that I have wanted to meet since I started there. It felt all family-ish and junk. SO nice to see some people I have thought about often and missed, but never thought i would see again.

And yeah, Rags was great. I got to talk to him on stage for a while, and it was the first conversation we'd had since 1992. One of things that did blow me away was the sound--it was perfect, both on the stage and off. I was talking to Matt Dacey and DJ Tommy Miller (great set Tommy), and suddenly those lights hit the buildings with the logos, and I about lost it. I felt like I 10, and almost jumped up and down and screamed all fanboy style.

    What a celebration.

Hospitality was amazing. Never felt that well taken care of, well ever. Amberly ran a tight ship and it all seemed smooth.

I think the location was a pretty perfect idea, too.

JUst to get there and see that many assembled, even at noon, was so amazing.

Great job everyone, it was a beautiful thing.

    gush. gush.

    DO IT AGAIN.

Absolutely amazing. I haven't had that much fun in quite a while (or that much alcohol, either). I'm so glad I was in town for the 'Fest, and that I got to meet/reconnect with so many wonderful people. Thanks to all of you who worked so hard to make it happen!

I thought it was fantastic! The people who put this together should be very very proud of themselves, job very well done!

It was great to see so many faces I haven't seen in AGES, and meet some of the new people who are working thier butts off to keep WRFL the best damn station in Kentucky!

I'm afraid to get too emotional, because I don't want Adam Neel to make fun of me. But I will say this was the first trip to Lexington in a long time that I wish could have been longer! It was a staggering, impressive event and I'm amazed by the work that went into it. I wish Rags hadn't been working so hard so we could've caught up more. Thanks so much to everyone who made this happen, it did my heart good.

Whoever said that you can't go home again was completely wrong, you can. Now I've done it. The years didn't mean a thing. I've forgotten what great friends and great music live(d) in Lexington. I really enjoyed reconnecting with both.

Interesting to get back to my real life after the weekend, all the acronyms of cable television and the protocol of a job for a large company. But it didn't feel awkward or unnatural, nor did I wish for it to be college all over again. Been there, done that, wore out the t-shirt. It simply reminded me that at one point in my life, I had the proud distinction of being part of a dedicated group of people who, as Jim Shambhu so aptly put it, "were like my (soror)ity." My fraternity / sorority was music and music people. It still is. My favorite people continue to be those who are passionate about music.

I said to Kakie at one point on Friday night, as we were catching up that there is a question that I've been asked over the years that continues to have the same answer. "Name one thing that you're the proudest of accomplishing in your life." Without question, for me it has ALWAYS been and will ALWAYS be...being part of the group of students who founded WRFL.

It's good to know that what we started continues to exist because of such an amazing group of students. It made me proud of the station and of UK (yes, really) that after 20 years that what we started is still alive and thriving. What an undertaking and effort it must have taken to make this event happen! It spoke volumes to me that 20 years later, there is still support from the city and that the festival happened on city property. All involved should be proud, because they did a great job.

So, I say thank you to all of the alumni and current students who made this reunion a reality. I had a great time and I can't wait until we do it again, I just hope that another 20 years doesn't pass before we do.

All the verbs for the spirit of the occasion seem apropos of songs ready for the cue: 20 yrs is a huge context to leap frog thru, (=so linear) unto the escape--this explosive event w/Fire & comfortable spacious lot to mingle or stand your perview. I looked off into the crowd like an owl glassy eyed & giving a hoot that people have such a positive purpose to rally 'round. One question: Did any of the local TV news folks interview FreeKy's entertainment providers (those who played or those who organized)? I noticed nothing up until this went down...tho I'm not an avid audience to local news, but no mention I ever saw.
