warning: long winded rant: so I return my library books, wearing one of my old dance costumes, (I'm taking a dance lesson from Kali at 1:30 pm & don't feel like changing my clothes 10 times today) anyway there's a raido station set up near a barber college or whatever so I go check it out, they ask me if I would like to hang out for a few minutes & dance. I said sure, buy me a cup of tea from Taylor's book store, I'm cold out here, they do that. I start dancing a little to the red hot chili peppers, foo fighters ect, just for fun, & I get 20 questions, one ahole even asked if I were realy a man, since I ignored all his comeons, I set him straight, go on my way. One of the djs asked if I would like to put in an apperance at the homeshow, he said it was warmer inside anyway. No go there, they would barely let me in the door, anyway agin with the stupid ignorant questions, who am I with, what am I dancing for? I asked them if they've ever heard of a solo artist? yes I bellydance, yes I'm darn good at it. no I don't want to date your son, ect. About 3 minutes of this crap, I've had it, & head for my apt. I feel for the pros that realy put themselves out there!
  • Emma, you'll get that everywhere you go...people, okay men, just don't seem to understand. Don't go dancing out there unless you get paid good money to do it. If they want to hire you for a real show, things will go alot smoother for ya! The guys in my fire dept ( yep I've been a Captain for 13 years) always ask me to dance...i always say, Show me the money!! *smile*
    • Sherry, I agree completely with your advice!!! All my students are given the same advice when they have reached a performance level.
      • Even though some haven't danced long, we can all be "professionals"!
I wish more teachers would impliment that into their training. It's one of the first things I tell beginners!
        • <<wish more teachers would impliment that into their training. >>

          Yes!

I think that's one of the reasons Narah started this tribe, so that we could share info. A great dancer doesn't automatically make a great teacher (and vice versa), but I like that what you may not know can easily be "found" by just asking.

Sure there will be differences in opinions since several styles are represented here, but with a few exceptions (and these exceptions do exist!), I believe that everyone has something to offer. And in truth no matter what style--ballet to bell dance-- good teaching skills do not vary by much!!!

PS--Sherry, as soon as you are up and running, I want some of my students to come to you in between their sessions with me! I know you'll take good care of them!
