warning: long winded rant: so I return my library books, wearing one of my old dance costumes, (I'm taking a dance lesson from Kali at 1:30 pm & don't feel like changing my clothes 10 times today) anyway there's a raido station set up near a barber college or whatever so I go check it out, they ask me if I would like to hang out for a few minutes & dance. I said sure, buy me a cup of tea from Taylor's book store, I'm cold out here, they do that. I start dancing a little to the red hot chili peppers, foo fighters ect, just for fun, & I get 20 questions, one ahole even asked if I were realy a man, since I ignored all his comeons, I set him straight, go on my way. One of the djs asked if I would like to put in an apperance at the homeshow, he said it was warmer inside anyway. No go there, they would barely let me in the door, anyway agin with the stupid ignorant questions, who am I with, what am I dancing for? I asked them if they've ever heard of a solo artist? yes I bellydance, yes I'm darn good at it. no I don't want to date your son, ect. About 3 minutes of this crap, I've had it, & head for my apt. I feel for the pros that realy put themselves out there!

Re: what's not to understand about a solo artist?
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 6:14 AMEmma, you'll get that everywhere you go...people, okay men, just don't seem to understand. Don't go dancing out there unless you get paid good money to do it. If they want to hire you for a real show, things will go alot smoother for ya! The guys in my fire dept ( yep I've been a Captain for 13 years) always ask me to dance...i always say, Show me the money!! *smile* -

Re: what's not to understand about a solo artist?
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 5:55 AMEven though some haven't danced long, we can all be "professionals"!
I wish more teachers would impliment that into their training. It's one of the first things I tell beginners! -

Yes!
I think that's one of the reasons Narah started this tribe, so that we could share info. A great dancer doesn't automatically make a great teacher (and vice versa), but I like that what you may not know can easily be "found" by just asking.
Sure there will be differences in opinions since several styles are represented here, but with a few exceptions (and these exceptions do exist!), I believe that everyone has something to offer. And in truth no matter what style--ballet to bell dance-- good teaching skills do not vary by much!!!
PS--Sherry, as soon as you are up and running, I want some of my students to come to you in between their sessions with me! I know you'll take good care of them!

Re: what's not to understand about a solo artist?
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 12:00 PMthanks so much for the advice, Sherry, I'm not quite ready to go pro, but I'm getting there! Usually I dance at Haflas, festivals, & SCA demos for little or no pay, so it's high time to start getting paid for my talent, I've been dancing 9 yrs now, wow time flys! Usualy my fiance or my brother goes on gigs with me, but I thought I could atleast return a library book by myself, sheesh, what a trip that was! -

And for heavens sake, take other women with you....it's so much more fun!!!!!!!!! -

Re: what's not to understand about a solo artist?
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 4:07 PMThank you, Emma. ::smiling:: But it's easier said with only two lessons under your tassel belt!
As my troupe and more advanced students will tell you, we work hard in class--they have a good time, but they also KNOW they've been to class. Plus, I do believe in homework! No sense in you paying me money if you're not planning on improving! -

Re: what's not to understand about a solo artist?
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 6:10 PMyea, about the homework, I learn better by written word, is there a way to explain the pyramid here in tribeland:) I am observing an adult ballet class on Thurs. eve to see if it's something I'd be interested in. wish me luck on my job hunt at the mall tomorrow! -

Re: what's not to understand about a solo artist?
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 7:02 PMI actually do write things down for those in my beginner's series--six pages. But after that, I expect every dancer to be responsible for what they learn! Notice the open notebooks all around the walls during class...they're taking notes.
Again, you've only had two lessons. There are a few basic moves you need to work on before working on the Pyramid. Once you have them, that "tricky" move won't be half as tricky since it is all basic moves. -
