Hi, all. A professor sent me a message this morning to say there is a bellydance paper being presented as part of the Appalachian Studies Association Conference. It is at 4pm today in room 402 in Drinko Library (Marshall's campus).
The library is located along Hal Greer/ on the other side of Corbley Hall, which is next to 5th avenue. There are parking lots across 5th avenue from Corbley and MU does not ticket for parking passes on weekends. The conference is free to attend, as far as I know.
I couldn't find any information about the paper or who is presenting it, but thought you might be interested. Actually, the presenter is probably on this tribe. :-) If you are, I'm sorry to say I have to be at work at 4, but I'd love to hear about your paper!

Re: ASA Conference today - Bellydance paper at 4pm
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 2:06 PMActually I was there funny enough, but because I was already at the conference for the work that I do. The paper was presented by a young woman named Brandy Renee (cant remember last name) from VA Tech in Blacksburg and it was basically about the implications of bellydance on Appalachian culture. Most of the people she interviewed for her paper did not identify as Appalachians and most of them were not born and raised in Appalachia but had lived here for awhile. It was interesting to hear but I found myself wishing that she had expanded her research to include a variety of dancers from all area of Appalachia rather than just people she knew..I think maybe most were from the Blacksburg area. I took more notes, just do not have them in front of me. I wish I would have grabbed a copy of the paper but I had to leave quickly. -

Re: ASA Conference today - Bellydance paper at 4pm
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 3:33 PMah, yeah, that's disappointing she didn't interview many if any native Appalachians. can't be considered much of a study really since there are plenty to choose from. I'd still be interested in reading it, though. maybe google will tell us something.
