Business as Usual proudly presents our inaugural bash: Hipnotech, October 23rd

Featuring:

Rosanna McGuire [Business as Usual | www.cleoflaptra.com]

Rosanna returns to Sounthern Ontario after spending 2 years studying and performing in San Francisco. There, she studied with a who's who of bellydance: Suhaila and Jamila Salimpour, FCBD, Jill Parker, Zoe Jakes, Rachel Brice, Mira Betz, Cera Byer, and Amy Sigil. In California, Rosanna also had the opportunity to expand her movement repertoir outside of bellydance, into vinyasa yoga, breakdance, house, and locking. She is known for her unique interpretation of tribal fusion, incorporating elements of vintage jazz dances as well as hip-hop, while referencing traditional styles of Middle Eastern dance. Rosanna continually strives to dance outside of her own box, and fully admits to having dance ADD.

Musical support from:

JD Mack [Business as Usual | Opulent Temple]

Opulent Temple heavy hitter JD Mack (aka Nick McAlister) steps in with his blend of bass heavy dancefloor stompers - everywhere from slamming breaks to slamming techno (see a pattern developing here?). Having played around the world from Bondi Beach to Burning Man (along side DJ Dan, Christopher Lawrence, and Carl Cox to name a few), JD is once again getting ready to unleash the best on Toronto's unsuspecting victims.

G Cue [Raw Soul]

Gerard Valdez, aka G Cue, has been playing his own brand of chunky, funky house in Toronto and surroundings for years and is a major threat on the decks. He is cofounder of Raw Soul and a regular at underground house jams put on by Nine, Boogie Inc., and Bounce. Gerard has been djing for 16 years of his life, learning and being inspired by Toronto locals as well as visiting stars like Mark Farina and Derrick Carter. Gerard has also played Harvest Festival, Promise Cherry Beach parties, Circa, and Footwork, to name just a few of his musical appearances and milestones.

Doors 830pm, First set at 930, Second set at 1030pm. Bring your dancing shoes.

$10.60 advance ($10 + paypal fee), $15 at the door if available, $5 after the bellydance performance (around 11:30). $10 virtual tickets available for me in person or by snail mail. I will not be issuing ANY paper tickets. You will receive email confirmation and just provide your name at the door. Tickets available at http://www.cleoflaptra.com

Bring your dancing shoes.

Held at Labspace Studio in the east end.
2A Pape Ave. at Eastern Ave.
Accessible by either the Queen Streetcar (24 hour), or by 72 Pape from Pape or Union Stations (runs 5am-1am on Saturdays)

Spaces are also still available in Rosanna's first weekend workshop intensive. This is an extremely rare, first time, maybe never again opportunity to study with one of Canada's most creative and technical tribal fusion dancers. For more details, please visit http://www.cleoflaptra.com

Friday October 23rd (Aurora Live Studios, 392 Queen Street E)
12-2pm: Yoga and fast technique.
Following a vinyasa warmup, we're going to drill drill drill. We'll be working on improving quality and speed of hip and upper body movements and adding footwork. Multiple level options will be given. Bring a towl and be prepared to sweat.

230-430: Technique contin. and flexibility training
More sweating. We will take advantage of our supple, warm muscles to safely and effectively increase our flexibility. We will be discussing techniques and practices specifically for helping those of us who were not born flexible!! Do you stretch and stretch but don't see any improvement? This is for you.

Saturday October 24th (Mad For Dance 263 Adelaide St. West)
1230-230: Fusion, movement invention, and creating choreography
We will be doing a combination of discussion and exercises on fusing dance styles, expanding your movement vocabulary, and creating solo choreography. Participants should bring "ideas in progress" for fusion, movements, and choreographies and be open to group discussion. This workshop is geared for dancers who either want to start performing solo, who want to improve their current solo choreographic work, and also for those who want to break out of using only a specific set of movements.

3-5: Flapper fusion
My dance-baby: a combination of vintage jazz dance and bellydance, completely fabricated from my own imagination. I will be teaching this style as an example of the principles discussed in the earlier workshop. Don't know what on earth this could be? See my video from Tribal Fest 2008:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqG-7DNB1No

Sunday October 25th (Mad For Dance 263 Adelaide St. West)
12-2: Funk styles for bellydancers - Funkifying your bellydance and bellydancifying your funk.
We will be going over how to utilize bellydance technique to create illusory effects in popping, contracting different muscle groups to create a hit, breaking down boogaloo rolls in bellydance terminology, and flipping arm waves inside and out. I will also be discussing different dance styles that are commonly performed with popping, and the distinction between popping and locking.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GYUOvjOlvg

230-430: Slow technique and flexibility.
This technique section will focus on drilling SLOOOOOOOWWWWWLLLLLLYYYY. We will also be doing yoga and other excercises to work on balance. We will end with more stretches (expanding on what we did on Friday).

430-5: Questions and wrap up

Cost
$240 before Oct 16
$45 per half day

Send registration via paypal (fees included in cost above) to [email]blueberrysouffle@hotmail.com[/email] Registration will shortly be available via my website. For snail mail registration, contact me for a mailing address. You can also register in person at my classes or events. Class size is limited so register early to guarantee a spot. No refunds, but it is partially or fully transferable (ie. another dancer can take your Friday workshops if you can't make it).

After a 2 year hiatus from the East Coast, spent training in SF, I'm moving back to the great white north in September. Since its been SOOO long since I've either taught or performed in Toronto and I've done SOOO much since I've been in San Fran, I've decided to pull together an extravaganza eleganza of dance madness. I'm packing in as much as possible into 3 days of teaching, as well as throwing a party with performances by moi, and beats courtesy of 2 of my favourite DJs, Nick McAlister and Gerard Valdez.

Want to know more about my dancing? Please check out my website http://www.cleoflaptra.com

The details of the workshop have been sorted out and the schedule is as follows:

Friday October 23rd (Aurora Live Studios, 392 Queen Street E in Toronto)

Cost
$240 (CAD) before Sept 30
$275 (CAD) after Sept 30

Everyone is invited, dont feel obligated to bring anything. We will start boiling crawfish and shrimp around 2 and the party will go late. Child friendly, my kids will be there as well as some others. I dont have the exact address of the place right now but it is on Strawberry Road just past Hayes Junior High. If you have never been to a crawfish boil, and you're not allergic to shrimp like i am, it is something you definitely want to be at.

We would love to have you all come and dance, drum, or just hang out. If you are interested in performing please let me know. I know it is a long drive for many of you, so if you would like to come, but need a place to stay overnight, then let me know that as well and we will try to find spaces for everyone.
You can contact me on here or by e-mail at snowmeow7@yahoo.com
The plan is to have performances and open dancing. There will be no alcohol at the event because it is on university property, so in that sense it is a 'family friendly' event - although I am not editing music for explicit lyrics if there are any. It is open to dancers and friends/family of dancers. There will be delicious food and lots of fun dancing!
Hope you all can make it!

If you've never had any belly dance classes before, and would like to join us, that's ok. I do recommend that you take the basics class later to get more detail on technique, but we will still cover a basic breakdown in this class.

Friends said they had been planning it for a while, but it appears the exact timing of it was spur of the moment. They didn't even bother to take their coats. Her boyfriend Seth had his phone taken away earlier Saturday because of his grades and Keya took off without her phone. She crawled out her window sometime during the night. Yesterday was a very hard day for the family of course. Her mom also takes belly dance class, so I've gotten to know her a bit over the last few months. They danced with the student group at the Beckley show. Anyway, please visit www.wvbellydance.com/keya to see all the updated information. Take a good look at the pictures and print them or burn them in your memory. They are on foot and rumored to be going to the Clendenin area.

Bulk pricing is $7 each for 6 tickets or more. Performing dancers do NOT need tickets. The tickets are cool. I got all the performing troupe names printed on the tickets.

First of all I want to apologize for not doing this before - as you could hear at the hafla I was all croupy and icky sounding and a couple of days after the show that icky flu bug that has been going around finally hit, so I have been out of commission for a few days. I even missed some work and I never miss work.

I was awed, amazed, and humbled by all the love, support, and camaraderie in that theater that night. As a new-ish teacher and troupe director throwing her first ever event I could not have asked for a better show. I have to say that one of my favorite memories of that night was going upstairs and seeing our dance studio chock full of dancers. I tried not to show it but I got a little weepy/vklempt and was totally feeling the love and the sisterhood that that room that night.

It was a good crowd and an awesome bunch of dancers. I love going to shows that have all sorts of BD, not one type over and over. I love that our dance can be so different but so inclusive at the same time. I find beauty in all sorts of styles of BD and I was happy to have so many fabulous ladies representing so many styles.

I have several thank yous to say:

First of all, huge huge huge thanks to my chock full of patience sister Suzie. She never got to get away from this because we share a house, so if we were home or together the topic of discussion was the show. 24-7, baby! She helped plan and organize. She worked on promo materials and ideas. She and "Troupe Husband" Vernon Haltom decorated the stage area. She is our costume mistress for both my regular and student companies and she made the fabulous red and silver costumes that Hadrah wore. I literally could not have done it without her.

Another lady due huge huge huge thanks is my dance sister Beth A. aka Pixie. Lady, you stepped up and you kicked ass. You rocked your local community connections and helped to get the civilian population in Beckley (especially at the YMCA) excited about our dance. Your program and flyer design was quietly elegant. You had fabulous ideas and implemented them so well. Again I literally could not have done it without you.

To the ladies of Hadrah/ZZ, it was a lot of hard work and I am so proud of you. You knocked it out of the ballpark. Especially Miki, Seby, and Mel - for it to be your first performance you were pretty fabulous. Beth G., you will be dancing next time! You are a champion "shh-er," though - downstairs would not have ran as smoothly as it did without you. Everyone has something going on - school, work, family - but you ladies gave it your all and I appreciate all the time and hard work you gave our routine. I love all you ladies with all my heart. I am so very lucky you are all a part of my life and I am honored that you let me be a part of yours. And thank you for not killing me. Lack of death is a good thing.

What's Shakin'? I got one word for your number - DAMN! You ladies rocked. I love good cabaret and that routine was fabulous and beautifully executed. Michelle, you should hire yourself out as a choreographer because that routine was simple yet elegant.

Samadhi - I have heard too many cab dancers moan "I don't like tribal, it's boring!" No, it's not, not if it is done well. And you ladies do it very very well. Earthy serpentine movements and crisp ensemble work mixed with playful hips is tribal at its best.

Samadhi Students - if I had not know you were students I would have thought that Amira had two main troupes. I have a special place in my heart for tribal and especially your group because you ladies worked that audience! You translated your joy to each audience member with a look, a gesture, a presence that was unmistakably unique and inspiring.

April - again DAMN! . I had never seen you dance before Amira's last Halloween hafla but you blew me away with the elegance of your dark fusion. You have charisma when you dance. Your audience was captivated by you. I think some of the civilians in the audience did not know what to expect when the music started but you drew them into your web and kept them there. Awesome.

M'Ali and Kaileena - I know I can always trust the both of you for solid stellar performances. You never fail me. You 2 are perfect examples of dancers who can combine femininity, confidence, and strength. Kaileena, I just wish Tashina hadn't pulled that hamstring so that we could have seen the routine you 2 were planning on doing.

Pandora aka "Slash the BDer," you know how proud I am of you. When you dance the playfulness of your soul shines through. I love you, man! And thank you for "loaning us" your brother Benji, the ever fabulous sound man. The event would not have been the same without his professional sound and his awesome after-show margarita drinking skills.

Amira, you were my sounding board as I worked on this show. You kept asking me "what can I do?" You listened to me whimper and whine and you cheered me on and kept reminding me that I could do it. Thank you so much for your love, friendship, and support. I appreciate you more than you will ever know.

Jenna, thank you for stepping in at the last minute. I don't know if everyone realized you had taught a workshop that afternoon and then came up and danced! Oh, and you have a new fan in Tom (the good sport I plucked from the audience) who teaches yoga at our local YMCA. Mwwwhhhhaaa! (big kiss)

Our drummers. OMG the drummers. I didn't know you were coming until Amira told me. You helped turn our event from a good one to one made of awesome. And thanks for letting this raw beginner jam with you.

Danielle. You traveled so far to support us and to share your great skill and passion for our dance. Gracious and elegant and so full of spirit and of fun. I have a new dance idol now. You were the perfect ending to a perfect night. (Plus you put up with 2 Mann women - me and my SIL! Extra points for that!) Can't wait for the Turkish workshop!

Lastly, I want to thank Sandy and Amie, my 2 teachers. Without you, I would be nothing. You were my beginning and I owe you both so much. It meant a lot to me to see the 2 ladies who have been 2 of the biggest influences in my dance life (and my civilian one as well). I looked at the two of you and then at my students and saw my beginning and my future and got a little weepy/vklempt. Thank you so so much.

Oh, BTW, the last of our corporate contributions has came in. the total raised for Soliders' Memorial Theater Arts Centre was $600!

I apologize for not getting this posted last night but I will be honest. I fell asleep on the couch right after watching American Idol (They sent Donny Osmond’s son David home - how could they?!? - he was fabulous!!).

I need to know if you/your group will be beginning your routines on or off stage. Emailing me now would be fabulous, else tell the ladies at the check in desk.

I only had a couple of requests as to time or placement. Pixie and I did the placement and we tried to mix it up as to cab, tribal, or gothique. So here we go - the line-up for Saturday’s show:

Set One:
•	Hadrah Dance Co
•	What’s Shakin’ aka the MU BD club
•	Samadhi Beginner Level 2
•	April
•	M’Ali
•	Amira Nagi
•	Kaileena

Set Two:
•	Pandora
•	Samadhi
•	Pixie
•	Saffa Nawal
•	Jenna Brooke
•	Danielle Donaldson

Odds and Ends:
•	Go a question but not sure who to ask? Look for name tags! My ladies and crew will be wearing them!
•	There will be an upstairs stage manager/costume mistress available in the group dressing room upstairs. Need help getting pinned into your costume? Hem came undone? See Suzie a.k.a. Iman Shadhir!
•	The group dressing room features a 20 foot long mirror on one wall so mirror space should not be a problem. A small hand-held mirror for eyeliner is not a bad idea, though. There is a small restroom off the group dressing room.
•	Can’t find something/someone downstairs? See stage manager Beth Gadsby a.k.a. “The Other Beth.” The 2 stage managers will also keep up with the running order of who is one stage and who should be ready.
•	To avoid “belly dancer pile-ups” we ask that all performers enter the theater from the right side and exit the opposite side.
•	Sound in the foyer of the theater carries forward into the audience so the stage managers might shush you.
•	Water for performers will be available in the downstairs lobby.
•	There will be a group photo after the last performer. Please stay in costume for the group photo.
•	As there will be civilians there, please wear cover-ups over your costumes.
•	Glitter - we have had a special request from the theater management - no thrown glitter. Body or makeup glitter is fine but please do not toss glitter as a special effect during your dance. It is hell to clean up.
•	We had several requests for opening dancing so there will be open dancing after the group photo. Have a drum? Bring it!

She needs to receive your payment NO LATER than Saturday, January 17 so that she can in turn send payment to the Carolina Theater. They have already invoiced me, but indicated she can add more people as needed.

The idea will be to just get together once a month and learn (watch videos, discuss history, costuming, music, have people come in and talk about zills and drumming, drill moves, etc). The first meeting is Monday, November 3rd at 7pm in room 3306 of the Life Sciences Building computer lab. This is open to anyone in the community, you just have to be a student to be an officer. Hope to see you all there!

Student Club Info:

The MU girls are currently getting their paperwork done to re-start the student club for this year. So far, there are 28 members. This is open to any Marshall student, staff, or faculty member. We hope to meet once a week (it's looking like Monday evenings) to dance and have fun. It's my secret hope that some of them will be dedicated and interested enough to dance at area events. :-) I will update this when meeting times are set, in case anyone wants to come!

Fitness Classes:

I'm currently teaching bellydance as a fitness class through MU's recreational sports office. All fitness classes are free for students, faculty, and staff, and $3/ session for community members. This is set through recreational sports; their website with further information is: http://www.marshall.edu/recsport/fitness.htm and here is their schedule of classes: http://www.marshall.edu/recsport/pdf/fallfitness.pdf
Bellydance is every Tuesday and Thursday nights at 8:30pm, in Henderson level A, room 1029. The room is down a long, skinny hallway where the old racquetball courts are found.

I am very excited to say that the first few weeks of classes have been amazing! I've had between 17 and 23 people each class, most of them brand new to bellydance, and lots of repeats coming back. I've been telling them about the upcoming Halloween hafla in Teays Valley, so hopefully I'll get a lot of them to come. :-)

Would anyone like me to make your class information available to them? I'm currently working on a website, and I don't mind taking little flyers or info cards to classes. Maybe you could email me something to print? The purpose of these classes are to introduce basic bellydance and get them excited about it, but since it's a drop-in only class (not a given set of people registering for X weeks), I can't really build into specific choreographies for them to perform, as one might do in a traditional dance class. I'd be happy to promote your classes, too.

What I've been doing thus far is talking a bit about bellydance, warming up, teaching and reteaching basic posture, and then doing a different set of basic dance vocabulary (a few for upper body, a few for lower body) each time, ending with small combos. My goal is to keep them moving, provide a variety of moves, make them feel like they are "Really Bellydancing! (tm)," and emphasize good beginning technique-- without unduly overwhelming them, given the constraints of the class structure. I'm hoping to keep a balance between "starting over" with new people each class while keeping it interesting for repeats. Suggestions are welcome. haha One major problem I've noticed is that everyone stops dancing when I stop, and if I look at them, they appear to be on the verge of run, run, running away. Any suggestions on calming the nerves of brand new dancers? .... vodka?

This post is far too long. :-)

We agreed to only have about 4 people who could enter information into the calender - kind of a representative from each major geographical area and/or type of dance. It's nothing personal it's just with limited people doing the data entry, some "quality control" can be kept.

Also with 3-4 maintainers if someone's life gets busy they just have to forward an email to another maintainer to do the entry. Haala in NC has 2 helpers that do entry with her.

Currently I have the password to the calendar and so does Amira.

If you prefer to deal with someone in particular email that person direct or you can send it wvbellydance@yahoo.com - I check that email weekly. Or you can email me directly at hadrah_dance@verizon.net

(I went with a yahoo email address because Yahoo has been around forever, hasn't changed hands or been sold off or changed/added domain names, and the email interface is simple enough for anyone to use. Also with a web-based email address, if the maintainers change or whatever, it's easy to just pass along the info and change maintainers. I mean, hey, I could get killed in a car wreck tommorrow but all that info doesn't have to be lost.)

We have so many great groups and teachers in our area, plus we could bring dancers from elsewhere in and they would get a chance to experience and enjoy the beauty of our state. So yeah, I think that would be really great, but I have no idea how to even begin organizing something of that sort nor do I have the time to be the sole organizer. So I am throwing the idea out there in the hopes that someone with more experience will be interested. I would be glad to help out in any way I can if anyone has an interest in putting together something like this, so let me know.

It's official - we're opening a new studio and store in Hurricane. I will be working my butt of this coming week to get everything ready to have a grand opening on Saturday, October 4. We're planning a party from 8-10 pm where we will dance, drum and get silly. No performances or anything, just a friendly gathering. I will be heading to the Blue Parrot immediately following the party to see a friend's band play, so I'd love for some of you to join us for that as well.

I finally got my items from Firefly Style, such as fly pants, wrap cholis, garter pants, and hot pants. We also have Kuchi jewelry, bindis, 25 yard skirts, pantaloons, fringe belts, cholis and lots of other stuff.

The address is 2731 Main Street in Hurricane. It's 2 doors down from the Ferguson Tea Room in the business district of Hurricane.

Here it goes - this is NOT a family friendly event. Please do NOT bring your children. This is open to anyone and everyone. We are not providing alcohol, however, you may bring your own.

Even with my over-organization I'm still sure to leave something necessary at home. It's just my nature. Anyway, anyone have any good ideas on food to take that's not just snacky crap, but that doesn't need refrigeration, cooking etc? I know that food is provided but I heard that last year the choices were not great if you're a boring plain all American eater like me.

I'm excited to get to see all my "old" friends again and meet the couple new girls that are going with our group that I haven't met yet. This is my first year going, so I'm a newbie to TribeO, but the classes look great and the company will be fabulous!

You drive into the forest and go straight until you see the sign for the pool (which is no longer open, but hopefully the sign will still be there)-coming in from the Loudendale/South Hills end, the turnoff will be on your left. You turn into the pool parking lot-it's huge, larger then the other shelter lots. You drive straight back to the pool-you can park there and walk back to the camp site behind the pool, or you can drive-it's kind of narrow, but I've gotten a mini van back there with no problem. If you see the stables, you went to far. Turn around and go back a little ways. There should be signs for both the pool and the Shrewsbury site.

BTW-the gates to the forest entrance (and exit) are locked at 10PM-just in case that's relevant to someone. Sheleh will probably be there in the evening, but will probably drive home before 10PM, since she lives really close by.

Don’t forget Regatta is going on that weekend as well.

Here's the map and directions that are posted on the Kan. State Forest website.

www.kanawhastateforest.com/location.html

Jenna Brook will have some signs of some sort telling you where Shrewsbury is. Once inside the campground you drive a couple miles until you see a sign that mentions the "CCC" Turn left. You'll enter a huge parking lot. At the end of the parking lot is a brown building (pool house). You'll drive down the little road to the left of the pool house and there we be! Cell phones don't work in the woods. It's really easy to find.
For anyone that is going to come in after 10pm, you can put a $5 deposit on a key, they give you your money back when you turn the key in.

"Since Jenna scheduled Moria to come to town 2 weeks before Onca's workshop, I am postponing Onca's. I would like for all the area dancers to be able to attend both events and I knew that being 2 weeks apart would make that impossible for most. I am waiting for her to give me alternate dates, so I should have the new date in the next week.

I apologize to those of you who have already been working on your choreographies for the show, but we will still be having a Halloween show that night that you are welcome to participate in. It will likely be in a bar, so I know that some of you are not "down with that" and will choose to bow out - I completely understand that.

It's been weird being out of the loop for the last several months while I'm on my hiatus. I'm really looking forward to seeing everyone at Triboriginal and at Jenna's Kan. State Forest shindig. It seems like belly dancers are just coming out of the woodwork lately - I love it!"

I hope that didn't come off negative to Jenna, I didn't mean it to if it did. I fully support her bring Moria and I will definitely be at that workshop!

I'll post the new date as soon as it's decided.

The article is actually entitled "Jennifer Rhyne - You do what!?", and focuses on how she fits her different professional personas in her life.
It is always so much fun to read about someone you know and love, but it is especially gratifying to see someone who has worked so hard given some recognition, so this was doubly fun for me to read.

With Amira's Oct show coming up--and the invite of student performers--I thought I'd share this information that was posted by Shay Moore (with permission given to do so), Director of the awesome troupe Infusion!

I'm even going to post the "letter" with which she beings her "cheat sheet" because I found it just as encouraging and supportive as her guidelines.

Thanks again, Shay.

Enjoy, Everyone.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Below is a little cheat-sheet I wrote about how to best prepare for a successful performance. Starting now, through the day of the performance, you can prepare yourself for a great show. Printing it out and sitting down and taking time to really read this and absorb the information would be a great way to get truly ready for your debut performance!
If you have any questions, or if there is anything I can do to make your first performance together more fun or fulfilling, please don't hesitate to let me know.
I am proud of you all, and can't wait to see you jam together!
Love,
Sharon
*****************************
THE WEEKS BEFORE
~ Play your music every chance you get.
~ Play your zills as much as you can. Relax with them. Make them something you are doing for fun and a challenge, instead of looking at them as something to fret about. The more "fun" you have with your zills, the easier they will be to play! Put on music other than your performance music and just jam. It did wonders for me when I was first learning, to help me relax and develop a positive relationship with my zills.
~ During down-time in your day, run through the piece in your head--marking out where you know you need to be and when in the songs.
~ Actively *visualize* yourself smiling and joyful, successfully performing for an enthusiastic audience. The power of visualization is amazing--believe you are capable of something, really *see* yourself achieving it, and you will do it. Most of my dance rehearsal happens in my head--lying in bed at night, I can get a good 4 run-throughs of a 15 minute set *in my head* (all stellar, of course ;) before I fall asleep. You may prefer to meditate over afternoon tea, or evening after work.
~ When possible, take some time at home dance by yourself to the music. It doesn't have to be performance perfect--just jam to it and get your body used to moving and responding to the music in the moment, paying attention to the changes and nuances of the melody that, when responded to in the moment, make a good performance great. Have fun with it! Visualize having that much fun and freedom on stage.
~ Find time to do a make-up and hair practice. The best way to find a successful look is to give yourself time to PLAY. Pour out all your scarves, flowers, and jewelry, and just tuck and pin and fluff and rearrange. Pull it all off and try again. Pull out your make-up (or go buy some) and try different applications on each half of your face to compare. Give yourself a good couple of hours just to experiment. If you have the time, schedule an appointment at the Mac counter to get a consultation. Tell them you are a bellydance performer, and you need a new look for a sunny summer stage, and see what they do. Even if you don't use it all, it's a great learning experience, and fun to be pampered a little bit.
***************************
DRESS REHEARSAL NIGHT (the week prior to the performance)
~ Do your make-up and hair how you plan to wear it the night of the performance (as much as you are able)
~ Pack up all your costume elements (checklist below)
~ Bring along a little make-up bag with your eye color, lip color, and liner. This will give us the chance to evaluate your make-up, and discuss/try changes that night if needed.
~ Arrive a little early so you can change into your costume when you arrive, and be ready to rehearse right at 8pm. As soon as you get in the room, start a self-warm-up--I will have the music playing so you can start thinking through the performance. Then we will launch right into talking through and then running through the performance.
~ Bring something to change into once we have completed a couple full dress run-throughs. Usually just changing your top is helpful to cool down and keep from sweating up your costume while we get in another run-through or two.
***************************
PERFORMANCE DAY
~ Make sure you get a good night's sleep, and are well-hydrated (combats fatigue and puffiness!)
~ Iron and de-lint your costume. Put your costume elements together early in the day to avoid a last-minute rush (costume checklist below). Put them near the door, so nothing gets left behind by accident.
~ Find a well-lit space, away from distractions (family et al), and start your make-up and hair. This "prettying up" for performance is a modern ritual of sorts--give it the time and attention it deserves. Allow yourself a few hours to do it--hair and make-up never want to behave when you are on a tight time-line, yet miraculously comes together in no time when you give yourself plenty of leeway! I suggest a good 3 hours to do your full hair and make-up. (As a pro, even I can take up to 2 hours...on a good day I take an hour to and hour-and-a-half.) **Listen to your music as you get ready--it helps to put yourself in a dance head-space.**
~ Don't fight bad hair--if your first try at making your hair and accessories behave isn't working, allow yourself to pull it all off and start over. Trying to fix a bad "build" is harder than just starting over--I speak from years of experience. When you've finished, toss your head around and make sure everything is staying in place.
~ When you're done with your preparations, make yourself a cup of tea and relax. Visualize a successful and fun time on stage with your dance sisters. Remember that the reason we do this is to share our joy in dance with each other and our audience. Let that positive thought fill you up as you head out the door to the venue.
~ Arrive at the venue at least 30 minutes before your performance time, 45 minutes is better. Check in with me so I know you have arrived. Head to the dressing room, get dressed and relax until your performance time (don't wrinkle your costume! ;).
~ Avoid negative self-talk, before, during, and after your performance. If you keep telling yourself and everyone around you how nervous you are, you are reinforcing your own nervousness and adding to theirs! Trust me, everyone is nervous and they know everyone else is, too. Instead, focus on the positive--talk about what you look forward to doing up there, how much fun it is to dance together, how loud and exuberant your dance sisters in the audience will be when your energy hits the stage, how beautiful everyone looks, and so on. **Remember, we are not "nervous", we are "anticipatory"!!**
~ When you exit the stage, make sure the first words out of your mouth are *positive*. **Never ever ever start by apologizing for mistakes, or groaning about this or that slip-up--remember, it's improv, baby!** It all works out, and we struggle through (nay, triumph over!) the tough bits together. Revel in your adrenaline rush, the sounds of the audience, the unexpected "kapows" that happened in the moment... Speak words of kindness and support to your sisters first and foremost, and remember "the words that come from your mouth, you're the first to hear." Give yourself the gift of uplifting thoughts and comments. Save the critical review for class time after the fact, when we focus on technique and cleaning up rough spots.
It's a Halloween show, so costuming and music should fit the theme. With the time crunch, time only allows for seasoned dancers and it will be limited to troupes only, no solos. Teachers, if you have an intermediate class or a student troupe that you'd like to show off, they would be great. I intended to send many of you personal invites to perform, but time has gotten away from me and now I'm leaving on vacation in 3 days and I'm realizing I'm probably not going to get to that section of my to do list. I'll be back in town July 7. Yes, I'm silly enough to take my computer on vacation so I can check emails and tribe, so you'll see me posting back. Yeah, I know, I'm an idiot!
We're going to do 2 workshops and a show. Any ideas for what types of workshops you'd like? She can do drills, technique, cane, fan, skirt, sword, tribal fusion, pop & lock, choreo and even burlesque. It's up to you all so let me know!
