Here is the listing Onca gave me for workshop topics. These aren't the only ones, but it gives you some to choose from. I need to make a decision in the next few days, so let me know which ones are your favorite. The workshop will be on Saturday, October 25, so mark your calendars. Thanks!!!

Raks Vaudevillia: Fusion Cane!
Foxy or Folky, it's all how you handle the big stick. Cane, or 'Raks Assaya', is a traditional woman's dance art that offers tremendous creative expression to dancers of every stripe. Building on the tribal dance vocabulary, we drill sustainable cane technique and explore combos with attitude. Great for developing both troupe precision and the theatrical face of fusion.

Shady Dames of Seville
A class inspired in equal parts by Flamenco, the Fine Art of flirtation, old dance hall...and every performer's need for self-defense. Onca's Fan Fusion is long on musicality, emotive power, attitude and upper body strength. Savor the flavor of Duende (passion), and explore the potential of every women's indispensible tool; the Fan.
Most fans will work: feather fans and fan veils will be discussed, but are not usable for the purposes of class. Onca's preffered fans will be for sale at the event.

Creepy Combos
Best known onstage for highly emotive performance, let Onça share with you some favorite Bandit Queen combos with 'Alternative' content: this is creepy, not-your-grandma's jolly bellydance. This material is great for gothique, nightclub and storytelling bellydance. And, Wicked fun!

Narrative Bellydance
Out there dancing? Have something to say! This class presents a range of evocative combos - spirited, celebratory, passionate, somber...maybe even a little bit of Evil. Onça has undertaken intense study of Narrative bellydance, and was nominated for Best Kept Secret for this work in 2005.

Get Up, Get Down, and Get it Across: Expressive Floorwork
A very popular class, this assumes a willingness to work hard and push creative boundaries. Build strength and fluidity while adding new layers of meaning and texture to your art. These drills, combos and mini-choreography strongly suggest kneepads and personal practice.

Fast Fun! Funky Footwork and Folky Skirts
Explore rapid footwork and the expressive power of fusion skirtwork in this class.
These combinations can be dropped into any choreography to add an upbeat flavor to your art. Great for grabbing an audience, skirtwork is also an excellent teaching tool for building community among dancers.

Additional workshops can be taught in sword, fusion choreography, circus flexibility, burlesque-esque, and playing Turkish Spoons. Just ask!

We are sharing the stage with Between Liberties and Agnes Wired For Sound. Between Liberties is progressive acoustic eclectic rock. (Yeah, quite a bit of adjectives there.) Agnes is Pittsburgh's most excellent industrial band with Chad Hammit as the cooollleest front man ever.

Talia (my daughter) was with me and we started cracking up. She asked why the police were pulling me over and I just made the assumption that I must have been speeding. Well, when I pulled off and he came to the window, what a shock he was in for when he saw my unusual tribal face. I immediately started laughing and told him how embarrassed I was that I was pulled over when I looked like that. He told me he had pulled me over for a burned out headlight. He took my license and insurance info back to his car. He was taking quite a while and all the sudden I told Talia, "He's calling another officer to come over here". Wouldn't you know, a few minutes later a second officer pulls up. It was hysterical. They proceeded to tell me how they had never pulled over a belly dancer before. He gave me a written warning and sent me on my way. I know that as soon as they got back to the station that night, the topic of conversation was that crazy belly dancer he pulled over. They were out looking for drunk drivers so I'm lucky he didn't make me get out and walk a straight line!

The library is located along Hal Greer/ on the other side of Corbley Hall, which is next to 5th avenue. There are parking lots across 5th avenue from Corbley and MU does not ticket for parking passes on weekends. The conference is free to attend, as far as I know.

I couldn't find any information about the paper or who is presenting it, but thought you might be interested. Actually, the presenter is probably on this tribe. :-) If you are, I'm sorry to say I have to be at work at 4, but I'd love to hear about your paper!

No go there, they would barely let me in the door, anyway agin with the stupid ignorant questions, who am I with, what am I dancing for? I asked them if they've ever heard of a solo artist? yes I bellydance, yes I'm darn good at it. no I don't want to date your son, ect.

I just have to share this.
A little background...
Last summer I moved from Morgantown, where I taught a class with the lovely Wendy and Sharon for a couple of years, to a very small town in rural WV. Last fall I started teaching a beginners class for a community health and wellness ctr and was pleased to have found some interest.
The first class we had 13, the second round we had 6. I was feeling pretty positive.

I decided to finish out with a choreography class (I don't teach over the summer) that will end with a little student recital. The ctr knows that I have to have at least six students in order to run the class. (I make my students pay for the entire course so, even when half of them drop out before the end, I still get paid enough to cover my costs)
I called the day before class to make sure that I had enough students. I had eight registered which was perfect since, with a choreo class a smaller number actually works a bit better.
So I go for the first class last night. I start greeting everyone as they come in, and they keep coming in! and coming...and coming!
33! There were 33 students!
I am pleased, but...ummm...33!
It was hard for the students in back to see me well and checking that everyone had the right posture took forever! I don't want to hope that students drop out, but, if some don't, when we get to veils it will be impossible.
Can you tell that I am feeling a little overwhelmed? Why did it have to be a choreo class?
On the other hand...yeah for a positive resonse to bellydance from rural WV!

I have enrolled in a real estate mentoring program with Robert Allen that is going to require a lot of time and energy so something had to give. I'm not dropping out of the belly dance world completely, just taking out the teaching component.

I love my students and I know how much belly dance has come to mean to them and I hated making that decision. Razi has agreed to come and teach classes in Teays Valley at the same time and place so that the students can continue on. Thanks Razi!!!

Anyway, I hope to see everyone soon at Blackstone, Triboriginal or some other event coming up soon!

Taxeem (April 12, 2008 - 9:45 to 11:45am):
An articulate workshop designed to enhance the poise and fluidity of the taxeem, with an emphasis on arms and hands, introducing dancers to movement vocabulary beyond the “Tribal Frame” as well as polishing transitions. We will address such issues as timing, musical and personal interpretation, illusions of the boneless dancer, and sensual vs sexual.

Hot and Spicy (April 12, 2008 - 1:00 to 3:00pm):
An exhilarating and inspirational workshop, designed to be accessible to all levels, with a playful array of drills, combos and hot new moves. Through a series of technical drills and improvised combos students will engage in such topics as dynamic phrasing, musicality, personal expression and the art of creating your own combos.

The Art of Professional Performance (April 13, 2008 - 12:00 to 2:00pm):
This innovative workshop is open to dancers of all levels and backgrounds. After hours of preparation in classes, practice in front of the mirror, and rehearsal, how are you presenting yourself as a professional performer? This workshop offers the tools both practical and theoretical to break into or enhance your professional appearance. It will provide insight into job seeking, costuming, make-up tips, promotional packages, as well as explore the illusive notions of stage presence, charisma, "handling" the audience and much more. This workshop is tailored to the participants present. Bring any promotional material you have on yourself, dance photos, your make-up, a costume you are working on, and dress in comfortable clothing.

Don't forget......Sterling Painton will start off the April 12th event with Yoga Stretches for Belly Dancers from 8:30 to 9:30. Also, we will have an on-site buffet lunch for $5. And lastly......Mira Betz and Sadiqa (formerly PurpleMatilda) will perform at Zafira Dance Company's Speakeasy Cabaret Evening Show on April 12th. For more info and tickets: www.zafiradance.com

And lastly......Mira Betz and PurpleMatilda will perform at Zafira Dance Company's Speakeasy Cabaret Evening Show on April 12th. For more info and tickets: www.zafiradance.com

Narah will sponsor a Basic Belly Dance Technique I workshop series on Saturdays in February (Feb. 2, 8 16, 23). The instructors include Avani (one of Narah's students who has gone through teacher training with Narah) and Kari Merlina Kizina of Purple Matilda (www.purplematilda.com). 10:00am - 12:00pm $85

Also on the Saturdays in February, Narah will teach two "Basics II" workshops, a Bodacious Belly Dance Moves and Combinations workshop, and an Advanced Unique Layers for Tribal Fusion Belly Dance workshop. All workshops will be held at the Pizzazz Dance Studio in Sabraton, WV and are limited to 25 people. See further details below:

Basic Belly Dance Technique II

In these workshops, Narah will cover movements that are part of the technical foundation, but not normally taught in an introductory or Basic Technique I class. They are an essential part of your Belly Dance repertoire, but a little more complicated than basic hip snaps, hip circles, shoulder shimmies, etc. Completing a Basic Belly Dance technique class is recommended, but not required (as long as you are OK going over those concepts quickly.) February 2nd and 9th 1:00pm - 3:15pm $50

Bodacious Belly Dance Moves and Combinations

Spice up your solos or troupe numbers with these most excellent moves and combinations. Narah's original ideas will keep you moving through improvisation, add dynamics to any choreography and bring out the best in Improvisational Choreography. Beginners welcome, but it is going to be a more advanced pace. February 16th 1:00pm - 3:30pm $30

Unique Layers for Tribal Fusion Belly Dance (and more!)

Keep your Belly Dance prowess fresh with these unique layers. It is doubtful that you have seen them in other workshops... (you'll have to come to find out ;) ). We will break them down so you can drill properly at home. You'll have great party tricks after this workshop! Be sure to practice those foundational movements beforehand! You can use the Narah and Jala Tribal Fusion Belly Dance Technical Foundation Instructional DVD, available in the market place. February 23rd 12:30pm - 3:00pm $30

Dance Show at MT Pockets Theatre February 23rd!
Narah, Kari and Avani will all perform in a dance show featuring various dance forms representing the elements. The show will be at MT Pockets Theatre in Morgantown, WV. Further details TBA.

It is a family friendly event, so it's fine to bring your kids if they're interested in coming. Everyone is encouraged to bring a dish so we can eat, drink (non-alcoholic please), dance, and be merry. For those of you who want to go out afterward, we'll pick a place and head out whenever the hafla winds down. I know I'll be going out!

We're going to be working very hard over the next few weeks to transform our ugly studio into something proper, so I hope you like it! We're excited to hear that so many of you are coming from other areas. It will be nice to finally get to know some of you that I've been talking with on tribe!

I plan on going to Princeton to see Raquy and the Cavemen on December 4th and maybe I will get to meet some of you there. Karen can't make it but told me to make sure to at least find and meet Amira while I am there ;)

The crowd was great and I felt very well protected with all the police officers and army guys around us while we were performing. There could have been mass mayhem going on at the other end of the fair, but they were definitely keeping our end of the fair secure. What nice guys ;-)
It was nice to perform with other dancers from this area again! We need to do that more often!

Here's some info on Culturefest I figured other dancers might need to know:

You will need to check in at the gate. Each troupe will have a list of their dancers/drummers there. Performing troupe members get in free. Spouses are half price (which is $20 for the weekend).

Camping has moved from last year's location. It is now on the other side of the tree line where Dave camped last year. Good news is that we can camp anywhere along that fence line so we can go down fairly close to the stage or the camp fire site.

Since they're having a severe drought, if there's no rain, they will not be lighting a campfire even at the site where there was one last year. No campfires in the camping area at all even if there is rain.

Propane stoves/lanterns are okay as well as tiki torches, as long as there is someone there to watch them. But charcoal grills are not allowed in the camping area. They will be designating an area near the fire pit where you can have a charcoal grill.

Only performers can use showers. Yes, that means everyone else is going to stink. If you're bringing someone with you, tell them to pack lots of baby wipes and deodorant.

Same thing with the kitchen. It's for performers only.

No dogs are allowed anywhere. They had an incident of a child getting bitten so they are not allowing them at all.

Take with you if camping: tent, sleeping bag/air mattress, bedding, towels, folding chair, cooler, drinks, snacks, flashlight/lantern, bug spray. The bees were terrible last year, so bee spray is a must! I know I've forgotten lots of things so please post things I have left off.
