abu question regarding reserves

topic posted Tue, January 10, 2006 - 10:29 AM by  Nina
Hi,
For those of you who sell your art on abu:

When you put art on reserve, what amount do you generally start the auction with?

I started 2 auctions with reserves at $1.00.

In future should I do it differently
or
Should I assume that if someone likes the artwork they won't care about the starting price?

Thanks for any feedback you may be able to provide.
:)

I think Laura usually starts hers at $29 or $39 when they have a reserve.

The advantage of using reserves on ABU seems to be that the items with the most number of bids appear on the home page under "hot items" and thus get increased visibility.

I did not find I received a huge number of views, even from having items on the home page, however.

    Hope that helps!

    nina,

it's hit or miss on abu. i don't find any correlation between starting price and bidding activity. i suspect there are very few buying ids regularly searching the site. e.g. when i had a string of bids, that same user was bidding on a lot of other stuff or i hear about other bidders who are existing buyers for the seller they are bidding on. but, that said, i've had a random sale here and there which is why i keep up the listings there - so i guess, a constant presence is key, imo. it's free, so the only issue i have to worry about is a simultaneous sale (yeah, right, as probable as a snow storm in san francisco).

Thanks alot for your assessment of the abu situation.
      :)

I agree that it is a good idea to keep a constant presence there.
      Very good point.
      :)

Where do you simultaneously list your artwork?
I mean where else do you list the same paintings that you have listed on abu?
      :)

        Hi Nina,

I use reserves in the hope of getting on Hot Items. It is more effective than an FP and free :-).

Hot Items are listed by number of bids first, then amount. I often start mine a little higher, even with a reserve, so they will end up there. I used to start the reserves lower ($19) but they often wouldn't make it on Hot Items.

It's slowed up a lot on ABU. I don't think I will FP there again until I see signs of life. Near the end of December, all the Hot Items had multiple bids, now, almost all are single bids.

        Laura
