ABU Charity Listings

topic posted Mon, January 30, 2006 - 8:46 AM by  Unsubscribed
It's been a while since we talked about charity listings. As some of you know, ABU now has live feeds.

Some of the charities we work with have put these feeds on their sites. In addition, I put in feeds on our WWAO website for the charities we list for:

www.worldwidewomenartists.com/cha...html

To be included in the feeds, you need to use the acronyms:

"PNNO" Project Night Night
"WWAO SDAL" Save the Dalmations
"WWAO PRLH" PEARL (this charity was started by Birgit, formerly of SCARE)

I think SCARE has the feed also. I will check on that.

If you are listing for a charity that is not on here, please let me know. I will either add an ABU feed or eBay link.

Also, if you have favorite charities, please let us know or contact them about listing for them. These ABU feeds are great and there are no fees on ABU.

Additional information (such as blurbs you can use for both the charity and WWAO) are in the ABU-Charity file on the Yahoo group.

Since I have only listed my artwork (for charities) on missionfish for breast cancer research and Hurrican Katrina victims I am unfamiliar with the acronym SCARE.

What does this acronym stand for?

    Thank you.

SCARE is South Carolina Awareness and Rescue of Equines.

PEARL (Palmetto Equine Awareness and Rescue League) was started by Birgit, our contact in SCARE. Both groups promote WWAO. Birgit is really quick about updating her site with any listings for them.

        Thanks very much, Laura.
        :)

I am assuming that, for the most part, the folks who are interested in buying art for charities for horses, dogs, etc. are interested in buying renditions of horses, dogs, etc.

Do you agree with this, Laura?

I am sure that exceptions exist, but not many.

A lot of people feel that way but I don't. I got a bid on ABU on an abstract for PEARL horses and I've sold zen, landscapes & seascapes for various animal charities. I love animals and I love my cats, but I can't imagine having my walls filled with paintings of them and I hope that other animal lovers would like some variety. One of my best buyers on ebay started out buying my angel paintings, then expanded into my other subjects.

I don't want to alter what I paint because of the charity. Sometimes, I hear so much about the animals that I get inspired to paint them, and I often like to put something living in my paintings, but I still want to paint what I want to paint.

We support other causes besides animals. Project Night Night is not an animal charity, and, in the past, we've supported a variety of causes. So far, the animal charities seem the most responsive about helping to promote the listings, which is a big factor in their success.

Thanks very much for this information, Laura.

            I appreciate it.
            :)

I read about Project Night Night.
I think what they do is needed and very nice.
I suppose that I wish they did more than they do.

In any case, I am happy that you have been having success with your charity listings!
            Great going.

I'd love to have more charities, Nina, but it's hard to get them to respond (Project Night Night contacted us). That's why I periodically ask people if they have contacts at charities. To make the listings successful, you need the nonprofit participation (links on websites, newletters, etc.). Teresa and I sent out emails to lots of charities and most didn't even give us the courtesy of a response :(.

There's nothing to stop us listing for a particular cause, however, and, like I said, I would be happy to put links on the WWAO website for any charities that we're listing for. Maybe if we had enough listings going that we could show the charity, they might be more open to helping promote them. I was listing a bunch for Direct Relief International at www.directrelief.org Conni favors Newborns in Need if we want to do that one.

Let me know if you have a charity to suggest. All we need to do then is come up with an acronym & start listing for them.

I added a DRLF acronym if anyone else would like to join me in listing for Direct Relief International: www.directrelief.org/

If we get enough artists listing for them on ABU, I will contact them about adding a link or feed.

                  Laura,

I have to appaud you and Teresa for your wonderful efforts and results.
www.directrelief.org/ seems like a very worthwhile organization.

At present I don't have any artwork pricey enough to list for charities, except for nudes.
I don't want to list nudes for charities because I know that many groups of people find them to be offensive.

                  Hmmm.
I have some older work that I could try to list for charities.
I am overtired now, but will strategize for charity listings relatively soon.
                  :)
                  • This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

I often list for animal charities, mainly because I love animals and I feel they get overlooked sometimes. However, I have also listed for others like the Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, etc. There were many charities, as Laura mentioned, who did not reply when contacted. For some reason, the national charities (like Komen) must feel it is not worthwhile for them to reply. I stopped listing for them because I no longer wanted to use Missionfish on ebay, and was unable to get them to send me a letter to comply with ebay's regulations, despite having made donations to them from past sales on ebay. The animal charities seem more responsive and willing to work with us.

I've had sales of different pieces for them, not just animal paintings. I think having a variety is best.

Nina, one advantage to doing charity listings with the letters (as opposed to Missionfish) on ebay, or listing on ABU is that there is no minumum donation. This allows even a small piece to be listed, at a 10% donation. Even the little donations add up. Then buyers who cannot afford high ticket pieces can still buy charity art! : D

                      Hi Teresa,

I cannot at present spend the time to learn how to use the acronyns on ebay for charity listings.

I am presently preoccupied with creating artwork that will have more appeal to buyers.
                      ;)

If I run charity auctions on ebay I will opt for using missionfish, that is, unless I run into problems with ms, as others of you have.

                      Thanks, though.
                      :-)

                        Nina,

The acronyms enable us to add links to the eBay listings and the ABU feeds on our website (and provide a way for other artists to list for the same charities). It is not essential that you do that if you prefer to list on your own but can add more visibility both for your listing and for the cause you've selected. I will happily add an eBay link and ABU feed for any charity our members list for, unless it was ultra-religious or political. Just let me know who you're listing for and provide a unique acronym to be used in the title (a quick ebay search helps with that). Then, all our members can list for them too, if they'd like.

Using the acronyms is not complex. You just put it in your title. It is also nice to add a blurb about what the acronym stands for. Please don't confuse that with using the permission letter on eBay instead of listing through missionfish. They are two different things. Missionfish loses listings so we never link to them. We only use acronyms to promote listings, which provide accurate search results (and enable ALL our members to list for a cause--MF is limited to US sellers).

I don't like to list on charity for eBay. Missionfish has too many problems and the listings are often capriciously pulled (I know of two artists who had their MissionFish listings pulled erroneously). eBay no longer does anything to promote the charity listings. And there are the steep fees on top of that.

I am happy to confine my charity listings to ABU. I hope we can bring more charities on to work with us and add feeds to their sites.

                        Thank you,

                        Laura

Thank you Teresa and Laura for doing this. I'll make sure I get the WWAO in the title of my charity listings. I'm trying to re-vamp everthing and move things from my ebay store to list for charity on ABU. I'm caught up on my commissions so I should be able to make some progress.

Oh, I gave my frames to an animal benefit garage sale and made over $300.00 for rescue animals. AND I got a clean closet.

                            Hi Sandra,

We appreciate your using WWAO in your listings (we have a keyword on ABU) but, for the charity listings, it's more important to get the acronym. I have feeds & ebay links for all the WWAO ones I know about:

                            www.worldwidewomenartists.com/cha...html

I'll probably move PNNO to the bottom or eliminate the feed if there doesn't look like there is more interest in it.

People are welcome to add new ones too :-).

                                Thanks, Stella.

We made more modifications to give each charity their own page:

                                www.worldwidewomenartists.com/cha...html

Charities that either can't figure out the ABU feed, or don't want to put it on their site, can link to their very own page (which will also help with our WWAO website search placement). It will also help when we contact charities after we start listing for them.

                                  This is great.

Just to be clear, I have the WWAO logo in all my listings. Are you talking about having the acronym WWAO in the listing title along with the charity acronym? I'll go and add it to the listing title. (Someone told me that it didn't need to be in the title just in the listing.) I've got several charity auctions on ABU.

I'm sorry. I realized later it wasn't clear.

We have all the listings with WWAO (charity & noncharity) on this page:

                                    www.worldwidewomenartists.com/auc...html

And the listings with charity acronyms on this page:

                                    www.worldwidewomenartists.com/cha...html

To be included in the charity listings page, you need to have the charity's acronym in the title. It doesn't matter if you have wwao or not on those. Because other groups also use the acronyms we set up for these charities through WWAO, their listings are also included. That is OK. The point of the charity page is to promote listings for that charity.

For the WWAO acronym, you need it in the title on ABU. There is no way to do a link to a title & description search (plus, we have a wwao keyword on the homepage).

For the WWAO ebay listings, I have the link going to a title & description search.

                                    Laura
