Is anyone else here doing weight watchers? I just started and wondered if I could get some advice, kind words, or encouragement. I weighed myself and refuse to write down exactly what it was here but I have gained 64 pounds in the last 4 years and was extremely overweight even before I gained this weight.

Re: weight watchers
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 8:33 PMI'm not doing WW but I would like to hear what folks have to say about it and what their results were. I may be interested in finding a group here. Thanks! -

Re: weight watchers
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 2:58 AMI have lost 105 lbs. on WW and left it off for 2.5 years. Count the points, study the books, and this is the easiest way to lose weight. You get the support and also make WW buddies to help you through. You can do it.

Re: weight watchers
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 8:27 AMI have the online program for WW and love it. I've lost over 20 lbs so far (10 more to go) and find that the recipes, articles are resources are really useful. In a world where our view of portions is so extremely skewed, I find that it's a wonderful resource for learning what your body needs, not just what your body wants :)
My only word of advice is ,pay attention to the need for "activity" points, and use them! I track my drills, walking, and other activities (yes, including sex) and make sure I use those points for fuel to keep from going into "starvation mode" and I find even though I'm eating more, I am most definitely losing weight at a more accelerated rate.
I've seen people lose anywhere from 10 to 250 on it, counting on what their needs are, and it's been a really great program across the board.
Good luck! -

Re: weight watchers
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 9:54 AMI have been doing Weight Watchers off and on for a few years. I'll try a fad diet, realize it doesn't work, and then always go back to WW. This time around I've lost about ten so far, and I'm staying on it until I lose twenty more.
I do the online version. I love the online points calculator and weekly tracker (I hate math), and they already list point values for thousands of name brands, fast food items, etc. There are a lot of great recipes too!
WW is the only thing that seems to work for me. Be patient, though--you may (and should) only lose a pound or two a week. But that's the way to lose weight and keep it off--by doing it slowly. Also, be sure to log EVERYTHING. When my weight loss slows down, it's usually because I've become lazy in my points tracking. ("Oh, that little handful of potato chips isn't worth logging---I'll burn it off somewhere", or "That *looked* like a cup/tablespoon/etc.--close enough", etc.)
Good luck!!
(Hey Amber, exactly what do you log "sex" activity points under?? The keywords I've tried don't turn up anything!) ;) -

Re: weight watchers
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 11:01 AMI actually just use the "add your own" for activity, and put the level of activity and time length underneath. It's a generic calculation, but hey, it was activity, no matter how much fun it was ;)

Re: weight watchers
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 10:21 AMHello All.... I've been reading this tribe for about a week and it's time to chime in. I started WW the last week of January and have lost 20 lbs. I have a lot of weight to loose and I really think that following the WW plan is the only way it's actually going to happen. Drink at least the suggested amount of water and make it a goal to get your fruits and veggies in. That really helps when you are trying to follow the plan. Best wishes....

Re: weight watchers
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 10:30 AMI was on weight watchers back in high school with little success because I hardly stuck to the program. It's a good system but can get a bit pricy. -

Re: weight watchers
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 10:37 AMPricey, yes. I hope each one is independantly operated. I went to one here in BR, and it was terrible. Some found it ok, but the goal they gave me was 120 lbs, w/o taking in to account my height and general frame. I would be a skeleton! My doctor said 150 to be healthy....AND they made you call out your weight to the group. I've never tried the online version.
Best of luck to y'all, Im sure the ones in your area are better-run. :) -

My dr said 170 would be my ideal weight... and I agree.

I need more motivation... LOL

Re: weight watchers
Thu, May 15, 2008 - 12:29 AMI love WW - I've been doing it on and off for a couple years. The commitment you put into it REALLY pays off. I lost 30+ pounds (but gained it again by NOT doing it)
It's a very reasonable way to lose weight while incorporating it into everyday life.
O don't think it's too expensive - about $45/month if you sign up for automatic payment, or $12 bucks per session if you pay as you go. I do advise using all the online support, but going to meetings weekly and having to get on a scale once per week really kept me accountable. I'm just getting started again, and I'll let you know how it goes.
You are worth the cost.
xoxo

Re: weight watchers
Thu, May 15, 2008 - 4:08 AMHi Jill! (it's Julie from Latifa's classes)
I've done WW 3 times and I've been successful each time. It stops working however when I stop following...funny how that works!
I love the points system. I did not do well on the Core program as I never feel full so I just kept eating!
Good luck! I may join you (in spirit - as I'm further south than you.) If you need any WW recipes, PM me as I have lots of their books. The best ones are the ones that fellow WW clients have developed.
Keep us posted and stay strong!

Re: weight watchers
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 6:28 AMI've lost 70lbs doing WW, but gained back 10lbs over the last year. I just started back this week hoping to lose the 10lbs again. I do the online program and find it super convenient and easy. When I reached my goal, I did NOT follow the maintenance program and that's where I feel I messed up. I just started eating more and more and found myself 10lbs heavier. This time I am going to stick with it all the way through the maintenance part of the program. -

Re: weight watchers
Wed, May 21, 2008 - 6:47 AMSo the main article on the front page of the WW Online site today is on... Belly Dancing! It's a fairly generic overview, but it does talk about the health benefits, along with some basic background and interviews.
And there's a BD discussion group as well...
Since we've been talking about them, I thought it was very funny that now, they're talking about us!

Re: weight watchers
Wed, May 21, 2008 - 8:21 AMNope. Very generic "fun way to get your exercise, yadda yadda" article, but it was awesome to see it mentioned :)

Re: weight watchers
Thu, May 22, 2008 - 3:10 AMWell, it is 5:30am and I am eating PROGRESSO soup (Italian vegetable) that has a WW emblem on it that it is 0 points! I tried these soups about a week ago. WHAT A MAJOR HELP. I take them to work and have them instead of sitting and eating a bowl of popcorn etc. Try them, the southwestern one is good too!!!! -
-
Re: weight watchers
Thu, May 22, 2008 - 8:44 AMThe one pain about the 0 pt soups is that it's 2 servings per can, and if you eat the whole can, it's 2 pts, still not much, but I don't understand the math sometimes!
And actually, I love having popcorn at work. I love the 98% free kinds, Jolly Time Healthy Pop makes a caramel apple I buy by the case off of amazon, half a bag is 1 point :)
