Arell - How about we give you + 50 pts for hosting the "Poetry Slam"? All you have to do is pick a day. (Excluding Derby Day)
Here's what I'm thinking, XSL Poets can read an original poem, famous poem, sing a song or play an instrument, tell a story, whatever. Then the audience will have scorecards and they will rate the poets performance from 1-10. All poets will get to keep the pts awarded to them by the audience/judges. Each poet will get to read one poem per round. Number of rounds will be determined by the amount of people who show up. And we should probabley get a gong.

Wed, July 16, 2008 - 11:19 PMI like it. I think all poems should be original pieces tho -
-
Re: Poetry Slam
Wed, July 16, 2008 - 11:30 PMI don't think they should have to be original. If its someone else's, you really gotta perform it, though! -

Re: Poetry Slam
Wed, July 16, 2008 - 11:50 PMi like the concept that it's not just poetry...but song, story, etc. i think this is going to be fun!

It should be up to the individual on what they want to read or perform. I'm sure the judges will be awarding more points for original stuff. -

Re: Poetry Slam
Thu, July 17, 2008 - 2:53 AMwhy would you say that "outloud"? that's like telling the judges they should award for more original....so i write a "rose are red, violets are blue" poem and you recite E.E. Cummings...yours is obviously better, but I get more points b/c it's original?
whatevs...it will be up the the judges to judge content & delivery (hence the gong!!!)...i think it will be fun either way!
maybe we should have a cookoff along with the poetry slam since we'll obviously eat! there could be 3 categories...appetizer, main course & dessert...and you have to submit ahead of time what you are going to participate in, in order to be judged! ...just a thought... -
-
Re: Poetry Slam
Thu, July 17, 2008 - 7:10 AMI like it. The XSL's first Poetry Slam Cookoff!
Where we not only make art, we eat it too!
Is a cake called by any other name less sweet?
Is listening to verse by Cable a treat?
To see Shamus' face full of passion
As Cassy bites into potato salad (in a feminine fashion)
Come to the XSL First Poetry Slam
Where we serve up art and won't feed you spam! -

Re: Poetry Slam
Thu, July 17, 2008 - 7:44 AMWOW!
I don't know about you guys, but I think Arell just created the invitation!
Damn...Arell's gonna be a tough contender for this one kids...cuz not only can she write some great stuff but she's great cooker too!!!
Better sharpen you're pencils and dustoff those cookbooks folks! -
-
Re: Poetry Slam
Thu, July 17, 2008 - 8:15 AMYeah, Arell is the Gurl!
That was too cute!
and I bet she made it up in like 5 seconds!
This is gonna be fun! -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Poetry Slam
Thu, July 17, 2008 - 8:24 AMYeah, I think Arell is front-runner for this one. That was a damn good poem. -

Re: Poetry Slam
Thu, July 17, 2008 - 8:28 AMYou guys are just too kind~
I have a feeling that this won't be so easy. There is mucho talent in this group. Much sensitivity. And some of you can cook circles around me. Shamus being one of them and Colleen is another. And if Mad Rabbit enters her mashed potatos, then I am done for! -

Thu, July 17, 2008 - 9:08 AMCassy said, “it will be up the the judges to judge content & delivery”
Does that mean we will have a panel of impartial judges this time or is it XSL as usual?
Since being original is not an issue will mass produced fruit filled pastries and frozen prepared entrees be allowed in the cook off? -
-
Re: Poetry Slam
Thu, July 17, 2008 - 9:18 AMShamus asked: "will mass produced fruit filled pastries and frozen prepared entrees be allowed?"
I hope so. That's the only way you can expect me to bring any food. -
-
Re: Poetry Slam
Thu, July 17, 2008 - 9:31 AMShamus makes a good point.
But of course no one will respond to this. -
-
Re: Poetry Slam
Thu, July 17, 2008 - 9:43 AMI'll respond...I also agree that Shamus makes a good point...
And, I'll just post some thoughts---together we XSL'rs can flesh this out...
I think in normal XSL fashion it will end up being a free for all...it's your choice for both "events"...original or not. Write your own or use someone elses work...make your own or make a trip to costco...because it's not just about showing up with something, you would be judged on content AND delivery. So if you just show up with pastries in a plastic container they may not be as well received/judged as they would be if you put some effort into showing them off. Does that make sense?
The only other comment I have is while what he says makes sense, I think that probably for most people making food is easier than writing original stuff...and some of you are just damn good at both.
As for judging...I think I don't know. Probably no impartial judges I would guess...unless someone knows of some! Can you order those off e-bay?

Re: Poetry Slam
Thu, July 17, 2008 - 11:17 PMHmmm... I wonder if anyone would rather have the event on the 15th of Aug??? Mur is away in NY, but will be back by the 15th. He has some original music he could perform.. Just a thought
I definitely will not be entering the food slam - lack the talent to either cook, or pick a cool store items, nor do I sing or act! I'll just read some shit if that's okay -

How can you say that u aren't a part of this group, you've pitched at 3 of our biggest events and came in second at the Elysium Open Invitational? Just because you don't think of yourself as an active member, doesn't mean that you aren't a part of the group. As far as the Poetry Slam goes, we are stil ironing out the details and picking a date. Once that's done, everybody will get an invite with the when and where info on it. Its looking like mid Aug in San Diego. -

Re: Poetry Slam
Fri, July 18, 2008 - 4:55 PMI'm kinda the opposite of Coggles. I would like to maybe read something from one of my favorites but you really do not want to hear my original work. It will make you slit your wrists or at least be admitted for suicide watch however I am so down on cooking something YUM up fo' sure! I have been thinking of my mom lately and want to make one of her favorite dishes using her recipe. It's all her fault I love poetry and food anyways. She gave me my first Emily Dickinson... She also used to do a similar thing every year at the AA Rendezvous' when I was growing up, except no alcohol, lots of coffee & cigerettes and sometimes even funny hippie/beatnik types that played the drums so I am really looking forward to this! Maybe I will write an ode to her... Hmmm... (brainstorm whilst writing!)
and Welcome Dan and Zara! We love you too! Because that's what we're all about!
(Love... Yield to it!) -

Re: Poetry Slam
Fri, July 18, 2008 - 7:05 PMThere once was a man from Nantucket.....
This sounds like it could be fun... I can cook and I can recite a poem... I can even sing if I am given enough alcohol....I can sing while I cook and even do a little dance....Do we get extra points for dancing? -

Re: Poetry Slam
Mon, August 4, 2008 - 11:19 AMOkay, I want to make sure everyone understands how the Poetry slam will work.
There will be three rounds.
#1 Warm-up round or practice round. This round is not a competion, it is just to warm up and get use to performing in front of each other. You may perform original work or someone else's.
#2 Freestyle round. This will be the round where you will be judged and awarded points for originality, performance and presentation. It is still to be determined as to how many points shall be scored. Everyone will be judging everyone else.
#3 Improvisation round. This round will be by choice. You do not have to perform, but if you do, then there will be a chance to earn extra points. A word will be given to each performer and they must make up a poem either using the word in their poem or writing a poem using the word as the subject of the poem (Or song, or story) You will pick this word out of a container without knowing what the word is until you have picked it. This will be done as soon as you arrive so that you will have time to think and compose your poem.
Food that is being entered will be judged seperately and will be judged per catergory. We will have four catergories and you may enter as many dishes as you wish per catergory. Appetizer, Side Dish, Main Dish or Dessert. Everyone will have the chance to vote for their favorite. Juding will be based upon presentation and taste.
If anyone has any questions, please feel free to e-mail me or call me.
I am very excited to see the performances by everyone. This is chance to let you inner performer out! All divas and rockstars are welcomed! -
-
Re: Poetry Slam
Mon, August 4, 2008 - 11:22 AMYou may submit either your own original work or someone else's for Round #1 and Round #2. Keep in mind that points will be awarded for originality.
