Re: Fact free question of the week
Mon, October 19, 2009 - 12:39 PMMary's Answer:
Hair accessories. Everyone knows that (usually) a dancer's head is closer to the sun than her hips. The sun is where the earth gets energy from. So, naturally, a dancer's head will absorb more energy than her hip belt because of a much closer proximity to the power source. Depending on the ratio of metal hairsticks to natural hairsticks (your carved wood decorations, bone and quill sticks, etc) the storage capacity of your hair decorations may be greater or less than that of your dance sister, but on the whole you will still be absorbing more energy - on average - into your hair decorations than your belt. (Incidentally, the build-up of excess energy is also why you may see the occasional red-faced dancer...we're not *tired* or *winded*....our storage capacity is just a bit overloaded. You may want to remove us from the sun as quickly as possible.) -

Re: Fact free question of the week
Mon, October 19, 2009 - 6:08 PMI agree with this logic and would like to add that the amount of product used in shelacking said hair pieces is vital as well. As well holding awesome hair accessories, that hard crown of gel probably works like an inverted satellite dish, broadcasting strong energy to those around the dancer.
And spit curls are just gravity defying....

Re: Fact free question of the week
Thu, October 22, 2009 - 9:35 AMI believe the belt carrys more power for the dancer. Since the art that is being performed is called belly dancing, on-lookers are drawn to the show for the beautiful display and decoration of the belly. The belly is also the location of the 2nd chakara which is often nicknamed the "Power Center". Thus as well as storing energy and hince being closer to the belly collects energy from the audience as it gets more attention than the hair accessories. But that does bring up the question of which is more powerful - Energy from Sun or Energy from the Audience? Ah Ha. What if the dancer is dancing at night. Who is more powerful then.... I'd say it's safer to store your energy in your belt. -

Re: Fact free question of the week
Thu, October 22, 2009 - 4:58 PMWow!!! Great argument Abby! I concur. People, and likewise, energy is attracted to our hips. Not just due to the rapid movement, but the belt as well. I think the energy from the audience is strong. It flows from your hips to the audience and back again. The sun also helps the belt area. It shines and reflects off all the coins / kuchi on our belts and makes quite a powerful energy source.... just drawing more people in.

Re: Fact free question of the week
Thu, October 22, 2009 - 5:59 PMAlison makes a good point, and I've actually known several dancers who - due to an excess of shelack in their hair - actually overloaded their brains when dangerous levels of energy weren't able to bleed off via the tips of the hairsticks. This is something to be wary of.
And, Abby and Tammy, very persuasive arguments, however I think we're all missing two vital points:
1) Firstly, I think we may be able to agree that energy directed to the face/head feeds the hair decorations; energy directed towards the hips obviously gathers in the belt. Where does energy directed at the torso go? I submit that - just like hot air - any energy that is focused on the cleavage area rises to the head, thus adding to the energy in the hair decorations (this phenomenon is also known as "topping off" or "chesting up" in some circles).
AND, secondly,
2) Bellydancers glow in the dark.

Re: Fact free question of the week
Thu, October 22, 2009 - 8:47 PMYou all are missing a vital fact: the hips are our pistons. No one argues that a car's power comes from the hood ornament, as we all know it's the pistons driving the engine that make it purr.
Hands down: the belt.

Fri, October 23, 2009 - 2:18 AMHa! I challenge! The pistons may drive the engine, but the pistons are driven by the battery. And I *can* argue that a car's power comes from the hood ornament. It's closer to the sun, isn't it?
I rest my case.
