The last Wednesday of October we'll be having a panel discussion! Yay!!! What will be different about this episode? Well, first of all we're having two guests on (hopefully); Carol and Melanie (if scheduling permits) will be returning to share their wit and humor. But we won't be interviewing anyone, we'll be talking about "hot topics"!
(It all sounds so thrilling, doesn't it?)
What is a hot topic? Well, we'll be picking some subjects that are kicking up dust on tribe or online, but we'd also like our listeners to pose us some questions. You can ask ANYTHING (well, nearly anything) and we'll answer it (if time permits). Which do you think is better: cabaret or tribal? Is it wrong to laugh when your teacher has a costume malfunction? How can Tammy and Mary be friends when one is a cat person and one is a dog person?
The floor is yours! We'll also have our Skype line open during the recording (we'll remind you all closer to the date) in case you'd like to save your question and ask it live!
You can start posting your questions here, and we'll start saving them up and formulating polite, evasive answers!
YIP!
Mary

Re: Panel time! What's your boggle?
Wed, September 23, 2009 - 3:29 AMHeres one I'm struggling with lately. It may be more of a workshop sponsor thing, but still I would love input. One of our big things is working towards elevating bellydance as a dance form thats as well respected as ballet, jazz, modern, African, etc.. In our local community we work at this by joining and participating in the local arts groups. Within the bellydance community in general we work at this be valuing ourselves, time, and talent and encouraging others to do so. Unless its for a non profit/charitable cause we rarely perform for free and when bringing instructors in we struggle to show/teach people that a bellydance instructor's time is as valuable as any other professionals. Lately we've had a crop of shows/workshops/performances in our area popping up (hosted by multiple troupes, so I'm not picking on anyone) where groups are dancing in restaurants/venues for no charge, shows are being sponsored with admittance fees of a few dollars, etc. No one would expect to go to a ballet performance and pay less than $10 (or $5) as an ticket rate or expect a tap performer to dance all night at a local restaurant for free. Yet this is how I see some local people devaluing themselves and their art. So, enough blab, down to the heart of the question, how to take a stand against bellydancers cheapening their own heart without a) appearing like a total snob and b) not attending/dancing in local events? Is there a solution? -

Wed, September 23, 2009 - 3:40 AMcheapening their own ART, not heart. (though maybe it is a cheapening of the heart too, or a "squeezing of the heart" as I recently heard a Buddhist describe desires that lead to suffering). Its too early for me to try communicating and philosophizing :D -

Re: Panel time! What's your boggle?
Fri, October 2, 2009 - 5:54 AMI have been very fortunate in that from my very first bellydance class, I have had a teacher (Lisa Myers) who is respectful and serious about all aspects of the dance. One of the many things we have discussed over the years is the unfortunate practice of novice dancers dancing for free or waaayy undercutting the standard rate. This has left me with the feeling that I should not even put myself out there as a paid (& thus at least semi-professional) belly dancer until I have solid foundation & skills in performing. I think perhaps what happens is the dancers realize they really aren't up to par as "real" belly dancers & mistakenly think by charging nothing or very little this does no damage to the belly dance community as a whole. This is unfortunate because from what I can tell, Mr. & Ms. Joe Average Public have no idea if what they are watching is a true representation of how intricate and wonderful the format actually is. In part this might also come from dancers being instructed by individuals who have taken a few classes themselves, learned a few moves & then proceed to teach without a proper foundation in heritage, music and technique. It's like a bad cycle.
The thing about the local shows and Haflas not charging a high rate though, I somewhat disagree with. Most of these shows, even if they have high level performers in them, also include a high number of very novice performers so asking people to pay a higher rate for what amounts to a recital just doesn't wash with me. That's a tough call. :)

Re: Panel time! What's your boggle?
Wed, September 23, 2009 - 6:32 AMOk, I've got one and hopefully I can articulate it well.
I only have a limited amount of money to devote to belly dance (don't we all) and I'm a relatively newer dancer. I am never sure where I should devote my money to: more classes or various workshops. And, if the answer is more classes (which is what I'm going with) than do I take all the classes in my genre or do I branch out into slightly different forms? For example, I'm taking ATS classes with Anna (yay for Yip Podcast guests!) and I'm trying to free up more money to dance; since there are no more ATS classes offered anywhere in my area, do I take tribal fusion-y classes or cabaret? If it's tribal fusion-y classes (which is what I would think), should I take the classes with the teachers at my studio until I feel I can grow no more with them, or try other teachers and see what I get?
Does this all make sense? -

Re: Panel time! What's your boggle?
Sat, September 26, 2009 - 6:23 PMI would be REALLY interested in some discussion of the ethics of fusing. I know this is not new, but I think it's still a hot topic. For example, I feel very comfortable fusing tango with bellydance because I study tango really seriously. Other forms of dance, not so much. I have a strong interest in Japanese dance, but I have never studied it so I wouldn't feel right trying to fuse it. On the other hand, the basic movements of fusion draw from places other than Middle Eastern Dance (like Indian dance and Flamenco) and we have no qualms about using those movements.

Re: Panel time! What's your boggle?
Sun, October 4, 2009 - 6:30 AMOk! I have two that I would like a to hear if you can discussed them. The go hand in hand. Issue is weight and people that make rude loud comments during a perfomance about the dancer and their weight. The percieved notion that bellydancer are supposed to be skinny with that bellydancer shape of a body, so when people go see a performance they exepcted to see that, instead they see something else. I once went to a bellydance show a year ago, where this guy in the audience was making loud roud comments and the show was being video tape so I am sure the audio of him making those comments got pick up. But it just wasn't him their were other scatter about. I went to the same show this year, and this time the bigger girls in show had thier belly covered up, and last year they weren't. So I am sure it was because of of the comments that was heard by the audiences.
Also have you noticed that all the successful tribal dancer are skinny or least more shapely than the skinny girls. Rachel, Amy, Zoey, Carolena, etc... -

Mon, October 5, 2009 - 9:56 PMMardi is curvy! Tammy and Mary are curvy! YIP! -

Re: Panel time! What's your boggle?
Tue, October 6, 2009 - 5:37 AMMardi was the first person to pop into my head after I read this. I do agree, though. There are not that many "famous" or "popular" dancers who are not relatively thin. Mardi's not all that big and, to my knowledge, she's the only one who's really popular. Cera Solstice out in SF(?) is juicy (that's what I call it), but she's not that popular yet. -

Re: Panel time! What's your boggle?
Tue, October 6, 2009 - 9:22 AMYeah, I don't really think of Mardi as a "fluffy" dancer, she just has HIPS. So, next to Rachel and Zoe, she looks downright voluptuous!
I'm excited about our panel episode! I hope a lot of you gals (and guys) call in that evening. It'll be interesting to see what pops out of our mouths when we haven't had time to think our point of view through.... :-P
