Time magazine did and article on yoga entitled, "When Yoga Hurts." Did anyone else see it? What do people think?

Re: X-posted: Time did an article on yoga
Tue, October 9, 2007 - 10:25 PMYeah I did see it, yesterday in fact. I was sad to read the first ever 'hit' on Yoga BUT, like anything else that gains any form of widespread popularity, there are folks that will scrutinize it.
One thing I will say is that they were accurate in the mention of what it takes for a person to begin teaching. So while I did not like the negative aspect of reading the article, I decided that the article will most likely draw attention to that specific area of lax and perhaps more training will be required of future teachers. . . a thing that certainly wouldn't hurt! I have been aware for a while now that there are more injuries than what's acceptable that come from Yoga and aggresive instruction. There shouldn't be many injuries, Yoga essentially is supposed to help.
What did you think?

Re: X-posted: Time did an article on yoga
Sat, October 20, 2007 - 10:45 PMI thought they skewed the article slightly to make one that would sell more magazines, but I do agree that some Americans have applied the same philosophy to yoga that they do to all other work out routines: work until it hurts and then push some more. I wish the article would have mentioned that this problem exists in all American workout styles, instead of making it seem like the problem was unique to yoga.
I do agree that there should be more training for some teachers (what percentage of them, I have no idea) and since yoga has become so popular, there are probably teacher "farms" that crank out poorly trained ones.
I wonder if there are specific yoga certification schools that are more reputable than others? I'm guessing so, but I have no idea which ones they are. -

Mon, October 22, 2007 - 1:36 PMI think just about any 200 or 500 hour training that follows Yoga Alliance's guidelines will be something of relative worth. And I definitely agree wit the first part of what you wrote. -

Mon, October 22, 2007 - 9:36 PMI have to admit ignorance to any yoga training programs available, so thanks for mentioning the Yoga Alliance. ^_^ -

Mon, October 29, 2007 - 8:14 PMNo prob Bob, it's an awesome resource when looking for a Training Program or registered teachers in your area. They're kind of the unofficial - official Yoga "sanctioning" body.
