hello! here are some ideas that i got from a training that i did this past wkd............
themes! its always good to have a theme for kids..........ie.....alphabet yoga, storytime yoga, super hero yoga, put me in the zoo yoga and so on........
here's a great breathing exercise for 3-5yr olds:
Lets try straw sipping breath. How does the bee sip nectar. Have students practice curling their tongues. Give them a short straw to practice with. Fold tongue around and sip some air. How does it feel (air tem)? Now try w/out the straw. Beez with partner. One will be a wild flower growing out of the sand dune, blowing in the breeze. Partner will be the bee seeking nectar from the flower with the straw sipping breath. Switch places.
good luck!

Mon, March 20, 2006 - 4:34 PMDon't remember which thread it was on, but someone shared the idea of having the kids hold hands in a circle while in tree pose to make a "forest". All of my classes really enjoyed that. This week we are also holding hands in a circle and then going from standing to sitting in easy pose. It's a challenge, but good fun.

Thu, April 6, 2006 - 4:10 PMBee inspiration! I love to create a "honeybee hive" with my preschoolers, usually at the beginning or near the end as it tends to be calming & unifying. We stand in a circle or sit in sukasana-circle, with our arms around each others shoulders or hands on eachothers backs, then everyone bends forward while inhaleing, then makes a buzzing bee sound as they exhale. I usually do this a few times- & you can have them try with eyes closed too.

Re: ideas
Tue, April 18, 2006 - 9:46 PMA pose that was invented by one of my kids during a "food" themed class was sushi posture: kids roll themselves up in their yoga mat, then everyone comes over and takes a bite, then the kids roll out. I've read that rolling motions w/out hands are excellent for young (4-5yrs) students. It also helps them with being at ease while being confined, though for more nervous kids I leave out the "take a bite" part. The kids especially love when an adult is rolled up! -

Re: ideas
Tue, April 18, 2006 - 9:50 PMThis is a great idea. My students love rolling themselves up in the mats. But I'll have to come up with another name for it cause "sushi" would be lost on my little Spanish kids. There are some Japanese resturants in Spain, but doubt my little ones have been.
