A New Year's Resolution? Free Yoga Classes

Question: Ready for that "New Year's Resolution?"
Answer: ? (Didn't think so).

Well thanks to the "Grotto" at Sports Basement - you have a "free" chance to improve your well being ... ..

)n 01 December 2007, Sports Basement joined together with local yoga teachers to give a yoga gift to the community.
Next yoga class:

• Sunday, 30 December 2007 - 10:30 - 12:00 noon. -
• Yoga Flow - with Annie Leguennec
• http://www.sfgoju.com/

• Sports Basement --San Francisco
• 1590 Bryant St.
San Francisco, CA
(415) 575-3000
http://sportsbasement.com

And due to the very high turnout of yoga students, speed walkers, coach potatoes, Fat Tire Beer Specialist, snowboarders, and then some . . . Starting January 2008, Sports Basement will host free yoga classes each & every Sunday from 1:00 - 2:30pm.

Yoga Teachers of various styles (Iyengar Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, Vinyasa, Raja Yoga, Kundalini, Anasara Yoga, Yin Yoga, Power Yoga, Anna Forrest Yoga, etc.) will present their unique connection with the yogic path.

Check back each month and see who’s in the mix – free yoga classes by yoga teachers of all walks of life. Official Website: http://ynottony.com/yoga1.htm

And, if you are a yoga teacher (or a soon to graduate yoga teacher) looking to share your knowledge, practice karma yoga (community service), and put yourself in the public eye, come join in & volunteer your services making yoga affordable for every individual. Pick one Sunday per month . . Teach as many months as you would enjoy doing. . . .

Yoga teachers will receive a $25.00 gift certificate from Sports Basement (per yoga class) & can use the platform as a way of promoting themselves and their unique yoga experience.

Regardless, it's a grand opportunity to start the year on the right path, meet some like minded individuals, see life in a different light, & calm the mind.

* Yoga teachers of all schools of yoga are invited to teach.
* Yoga students of all levels are invited to attend.

For more information or to get your name on the yoga teacher's list - contact: Iyengar Yoga Teacher, tony at:: http://ynottony.com/contact.php

1. Send a brief Yoga Bio
2. Send a list of your available Sundays in January, February & March - 2008.
3. Send a link to your website, personal profile (Myspace, Zaadz, Tribe, Yelp review, etc) or something which speaks highly of you
4. Start advertising your yoga class

Wishing the best of all possible worlds,
tony

Dear Yogis,

I came across Agama Yoga very recently. Their web-site www.agamyoga.com seems rather resonating with what I want to learn as in seems like the integration I ahve been looing for.
But I would like to hear of any experiences any of you might have had with Agama Yoga?
Did you take any courses with them?
Do you know Swami Vivekananda Saraswati?? Any first hande xperience?

Any information on this would be great as I am assessing doing a 2 month intensive with them......

Thanks so much......

Kate will be teaching at the Precita Center tomorrow, April 26th, Tuesday, May 1st, and Thursday, May 3rd. We will possibly have a sub on May 8th as well if Katy Bell is not back in time for class. Kate Schox is one of my favorite teachers and favorite people. You’ll really love her. Don’t worry, she’ll be gentle.

2) While Katy is away, the Big Grrl Yoga class will be on hold.

3) Jonathan Reynolds will leave for India in May. Stay tuned for announcements on the Capp Street classes.

Class description: Yoga is one of the most accessible forms of movement, and round bodies can perform and benefit from many of the same poses that sleek, active bodies can. This class is meant to be safe and comfortable space for the absolute beginner as well as the yoga aficionado; the pace is slow, thoughtful and meditative, and the instructor offers a challenging version of each pose for more advanced students. Each class is tailored to the physical abilities of those in attendance. Katy Bell has been working with a small group of Big Grrls for the last year to create this class especially for women* of size and their strengths. She gives you the credit you deserve for showing up, and focuses on the end result: walking away feeling great.*for now this class is open only to women and invited male guests to create a comfortable space for participants.

--------------------------

About Katy Bell: About the teacher: Katy Bell has been teaching yoga for six years, studying and practicing for 10 mostly locally here in San Francisco. She is heavily influenced by the work of Judith Lasater and Betty Roi, as well as Tony Briggs and Ana Forrest. Katy teaches an Iyengar-influenced Hatha Yoga class that employs humor and detailed instruction, and emphasizes making real contact with the self. About the class: Let's practice with the intention to balance energy and connect with our bodies. My classes are generally tailored to the needs of the participants--physical, mental, emotional, or energetic--as determined that day. Beginners are welcome; this will bean all level practice.

About Katy Bell:

About the teacher: Katy Bell has been teaching yoga for six years,
studying and practicing for 10 mostly locally here in San Francisco.
She is heavily influenced by the work of Judith Lasater and Betty Roi,
as well as Tony Briggs and Ana Forrest. Katy teaches an
Iyengar-influenced Hatha Yoga class that employs humor and detailed
instruction, and emphasizes making real contact with the self.

About the class: Let's practice with the intention to balance energy
and connect with our bodies. My classes are generally tailored to the
needs of the participants--physical, mental, emotional, or
energetic--as determined that day. Beginners are welcome; this will be
an all level practice.

About Jonathan Reynolds:

Jonathan Reynolds has completed teacher trainings with the White Lotus
Foundation, Erich Schiffmann, Darren Main, BaronBaptiste and Greenpath
Yoga.

He is the founder of Learning To Listen, a global community dedicated
to spreading tools for conscious living, and has written two books:
Poetic Listening and Learning To Listen: Simplifying Spiritual
Practice; and has created a meditation CD - Learning To Listen:
Simplifying Meditation.

His yoga class can be both physically and mentally challenging, yet
remains beginner friendly. By using vinyasa (roughly sun salutations)
as yoga's physical building block, we can realize the breath as the
building block of consciousness. Yoga as meditation allows us to
experience life's honesty by transcending perceived limitations,
building in organic ways an appreciation of love, patience,
generosity, and union. Both seated meditation and chanting are used as
part of the experience.

Class description: Yoga is one of the most accessible forms of
same poses that sleek, active bodies can. This class is meant to be a
safe and comfortable space for the absolute beginner as well as the
yoga afficionado; the pace is slow, thoughtful and meditative, and the
instructor offers a challenging version of each pose for more advanced
students. Each class is tailored to the physical abilities of those in
attendance. Katy Bell has been working with a small group of Big Grrls
for the last year to create this class especially for women* of size
The Cast of Characters:

Zoe Keating
http://www.myspace.com/zoecello

The Handstand Ball will open at 9 pm with world acclaimed avant-cellist, Zoe Keating. Her performance will be punctuated with an accompaniment by yoga ritual performers, The MahaMudras.

Zoë uses layers and layers of cello to create densely textured, rhythmically and melodically rich landscapes of sound. Her music appeals to a wide spectrum of listeners, from fans of post-punk to acoustic ambient to classical. Melancholy seeps into every note of her music

Zoe Keating was a founding member of cello-rock group Rasputina, co-founded by Nirvana cellist Melora Creager. Currently, she thrives on live performance and improvisation. Zoë tours extensively, opening for artists like Imogen Heap. Keating has appeared on records ranging from DJ Shadow's latest to albums by Tarentel, John Vanderslice, the Court and Spark, and Michael Talbott & the Wolfkings, among others. Her
album, One Cello x 16 Natoma hit No. 2 among iTunes' classical downloads.

Jason Webley
http://www.myspace.com/jasonwebley

Jason Webley’s combination of folk, gypsy, and punk is most often compared to Tom Waits or Vladimir Vysotsky but also draws from Leonard Cohen, Shel Silverstein, Bob Dylan, Neutral Milk Hotel, Nick Cave and the Dead Kennedys.

Some of Webley's most famous songs are the apocalyptic "Dance While the Sky Crashes Down" (which appears on his album Against the Night), and his most common show finale, "The Drinking Song" (which appears on Counterpoint). During "The Drinking Song" the audience is asked to sing in a drunken stupor:

If the glass is full
drink up, drink up
this may be the last time we see this cup.
If God wanted us sober
he'd knock the glass over
so while it is full
we drink up.

Jason completes his Eastern-European tour on March 12th. He will be making this one West-Coast appearance before he departs for the East-Coast. Webley also performs annually at several festivals including Burning Man, Whole Earth Festival, and the Glastonbury Festival.

The Gomorran Social Aid and Pleasure Club
http://www.myspace.com/thegomorrans

Baptism by moonshine must be a wonderful thing, if the music of the Gomorran Social Aid and Pleasure Club is any indication. Dunk me in the river, with one hand on my head and the other on the Good Book, I say, because this, friends, is glorious release. Preaching a sweaty, red-faced gospel of saturnalian abandon, cleansing the soul through Mardi Gras immoderation, these N’Awlins-infatuated ragtime pranksters deliver sinfully divine horn-and-banjo celebrations of the good life, circa 1920. With songs such as “Whiskey Paycheck” in their repertoire, the Gomorran Social Aid and Pleasure Club will leave you with no choice but to bear witness to their holy spirit.
-- Todd Lavoie, San Francisco Bay Guardian

Knees and Elbow
http://www.myspace.com/kneesandelbows

Knees and Elbows are the most awkward and flexible parts of the human anatomy... Some people reminisce about certain sexual positions, while others remember their track coach yelling "Knees and elbows! Knees and
Elbows!" An ungainly, maladroit teen, can be colloquially derided as "All knees and elbows."

Ultra Gypsy

Out of the San Francisco Bay Area, Ultra Gypsy is an innovative dance theater company founded in 1996 by visionary dancer and choreographer Jill Parker.

We are Gypsies for today's world, wandering in a maze of modernity. We are a myriad of cultures, old and new, picking up what we need and defying the taboos that bind us. We are modern and primitive, urban and tribal, medusa and machine.

Freakotronic

Freakotronic is Miami booty bass party ruckus from Sean Kelly (of Spanganga infamy) and his bevvy of no-holds barred backup dancers.Southern fried booty rap with positive pseudo lyrics and hella dancers. You bring the PAM we'll bring the buffing chamois.

Plus
- Sparklemotion
- and more!

All presided over by the incomparable Katy Bell.

same poses that sleek, active bodies can. This class is meant to be a
safe and comfortable space for the absolute beginner as well as the
yoga afficionado; the pace is slow, thoughtful and meditative, and the
instructor offers a challenging version of each pose for more advanced
students. Each class is tailored to the physical abilities of those in
attendance. Katy Bell has been working with a small group of Big Grrls
for the last year to create this class especially for women* of size
and their strengths. She gives you the credit you deserve for showing
up, and focuses on the end result: walking away feeling great.

*for now this class is open only to women and invited male guests to
create a comfortable space for participants. it will evolve as the
group does so check back with this site for updates.

Beginners are welcome, this will be
an all level practice.

Hello Mobsters,

As we gear up to move to our new permanent location, we will be scaling
back classes. Our morning program has been reduced to Saturdays 9am to
11am. The Monday evening class has been cancelled as well. Our
Tuesday and Thursday night program remains the same.

We are targeting a May 1st grand opening date for Yoga Mob Studios.
It’s an exciting time as we fundraise, seek a lease, and plan the
remodel. Stay tuned for more news about Yoga Mob’s dedicated space.

We have four classes on Tuesday

Tuesdays at Precita Center - 534 Precita Avenue, East end of Precita
Park:

Date: Tuesday Febuary 6th
Time: 6:30 - 7:45 pm
Instructor: Katy Bell
Class: Iyengar-influenced Hatha
Levels: All levels
Location: Precita Center - 534 Precita Ave. East end of Precita Park.
Donations: Sliding scale. No minimum.

and

Date: Tuesday Febuary 6th
Time: 8 - 9 pm
Instructor: Katy Bell
Class: Big Grrrl Yoga with Katy Bell
Levels: All levels
Donations: Sliding scale. No minimum.

Class description: Yoga is one of the most accessible forms of
movement, and round bodies can perform and benefit from many of the
same poses that sleek, active bodies can.
She gives you the credit you deserve for showing
up, and focuses on the endresult: walking away feeling great.

*for now this class is open only to women and invited male guests to
create a comfortable space for participants. it will evolve as the
group does so check back with this site for updates.
Yoga Mob - A call for performers

Hey Mobsters,

We are reaching the next phase of Yoga Mob. The community center we have been utilizing has its limitations (no heat being foremost) so we have started the search for a dedicated space to lease. The process is speeding along and we have our eye on a few potential homes for Yoga Mob. A dedicated space will mean an extended schedule - three to four donations classes per day – plus workshops, events, screenings, art shows and more.

What I need from the Yoga Mob community now is talent! I know that within our ranks we have amazing artists in spades. I’m seeking performers for a Yoga Mob benefit or benefits at 12 Galaxies in February. I have no idea what the bill will be like so… whatever it is that you do, let me know about it. Let’s see what we got! A donated performance would be wonderful but I will negotiate a deal with selected performers who wish to make a partial donation.

If you would like to help, email me with your contact info, your band name or the name of your act, a brief description of your sound or what you do, and the history of your recent performances in San Francisco.

We’ll promote the hell out of the show. Can’t wait to see how this comes together.

Cat…

Wish list

Yoga Mob and its success was a direct result of the collaboration and generosity found on tribe. I’m hoping that tribe magic still exists.

Yoga Mob can use your help. Here is our wish list:

Space

We are looking for rooms that will accomdate up to 30 students. Ideally, the room will have an uncarpeted floor, temperature regulation, and a sound system. However, In exchange for affordable classes, Yoga Mob students are willing to tolerate noise, disruptions, and temperature fluctuations.

I have a proposal that you can send to potential sites. I can forward it to you or you can send me the contact info and I will forward the proposal.

Send any leads to farang_cat@yahoo.com

Mats and props

Now that we are roaming, it would be amazing if we could store a few mats at each site. We have 15 mats. 30 would be great. Rolls of uncut mats (about 15 mats in a roll) are available for about $125. Studios throw out their old mats so ask around. We love to take donations of yoga props, space and time in exchange for classes. I’d say if you donate a roll of mats, free classes for as long as you want are in order, guilt free.

Volunteers

With multiple locations, we will need volunteers to greet people and do sign-in. Of course, you get free classes and lots of smiles and appreciation for this service.

Tech

We could use web hosting, a domain and a reliable listserv. I’m piggybacking yogamob.org on another domain right now. Advice on how to enhance the website is always appreciate. Donation of the time to do the enhancements is even more appreciated.

Chat

I miss chatting about donation yoga on tribe. Start a new topic. Throw out some ideas. It'll be fun.

What is Yoga?

What is yoga? Yoga is a Sanskrit word which means "to add two things together." There must be two things. For example if you want to add two bricks together, then ce ment, water and other substances are needed.

Similarly, yoga means to connect two persons: one is the Supreme Lord and the other is the unlimited souls. Because we have forgotten that Supreme Lord, we are greatly suffering. Sometimes we suffer as donkeys, asses, dogs, pigs and so on, and sometimes as demigods; we have passed through all the various species of life.

Sri Krsna is so merciful that, by His causeless mercy, He has now given us this human form. This human form is very temporary however; we do not know when we will die. We are all suffering because we think that we are this body. Actually, this body is a bag of urine, stool, blood and other unwanted things. Still we think we are this body, and we endeavor only to please this body – not the mind and soul.

The easiest way to meet with Krsna is through yoga. You should know that the soul is part and parcel of God – the etern
